The Effects of the Barbarian Sphere.

[1] You will now receive, Mavortius, our glory, the fullest teaching of this art, unknown to many Greeks and to all Romans, to which down to the present day no one's genius has aspired. For not even those divine men and high priests of the most holy religion, Petosiris and Nechepso, one of whom held the helm of empire, were able to discover what we are about to publish, although they had set out everything pertaining to the teaching of this art in most diligent and true interpretations. So that a long-winded discourse may not draw out our treatise, I shall briefly make known to you the secrets of the promised work.

[2] The zodiacal circle, as we said in the book of instruction, is held by 12 signs. To the sides of these signs other stars cling, but such as never desert the places assigned to them by a wandering course; rather, keeping the spaces handed over to them, they are always turned with an unchanging motion as the heavens run on. These, placed in the regions neighboring the signs, rise with the 12 signs and set again with them, always preserving the order of their course unchanged.

〔二〕如我们在《教导之书》里所说，黄道圈由十二个星座占着。在这些星座的两侧，另有一些星紧贴着，但它们从不以游移的行程离开分派给它们的位置；而是守着交给它们的空间，随着天的运转，总以不变的运动旋转。它们安在与星座相邻的区域，随十二星座一同升起，又随它们一同落下，总是保持行程的次序不变。

[3] Antiquity attached to these stars the names of the old myths. The number of these stars was also set out in Greek by Aratus, a most eloquent poet, and in Latin by Caesar and by Tully, the glory of eloquence. But these men published their names and risings, not also the authority of their effects, so that they seem to me to have put these things forth not from any science of astrology, but carried away by poetic license, from a zeal for learned speech.

[4] But we, having examined the principle of all the effects, have found that these stars too claim a very great deal for themselves in the nativities of men. So, to set out what we have promised, we shall state both their places and their names, so that in this way the whole truth of their effects may be gathered together. These stars decree only when, placed in their morning rising, they hold the Ascendant or the Descendant.

〔四〕但我们审察了一切效应的原理，发现这些星在人的本命里也为自己要求极大的分量。所以，为了陈述我们所许诺的，我们要说出它们的位置与名字，好这样把它们效应的全部真相汇集起来。这些星只有在处于晨升、占着上升点或下降点时才作判定。

On the Rising of the Ship.

论船座的升起

[1] On the right side of Aries, namely in the 4th degree of Aries, the Ship rises. If anyone, then, is born when this degree is rising, that is, if he has broken forth in birth at its rising, he will be a helmsman, a ship's master, a shipowner, but one who throughout the whole span of his life always wishes to be involved in maritime business.

〔一〕在白羊的右侧，即在白羊的第四度，船座升起。那么，倘若有人生在这一度升起时，即在它升起时破胎而出，他会成为舵手、船长、船东，而且终其一生总想参与海上的营生。

[2] On the left side of Aries rises Orion, namely in the 10th degree of Aries. If, then, Orion is partilely in the Ascendant or in the Midheaven, it makes men conspicuous for quick agility of body, and men whose mind, entangled in various anxieties, always seethes with wakeful thought. They will always vary their dwellings, they will change houses and seats, and they will fly through everyone's doorways in morning greetings.

〔二〕在白羊的左侧升起猎户座，即在白羊的第十度。那么，倘若猎户座精确到度地在上升点或中天，会使人以身体敏捷灵活而显眼，心思缠在种种焦虑里，总以清醒的思虑翻腾。他们总会变换住处，更换房屋与居所，在清晨的问安中飞快穿过每一家的门口。

[3] In the 15th degree of Aries, toward the north, the Charioteer rises. Whoever is born at its rising will be either a charioteer or a tamer of horses, or one who leaps across four-horse chariots, or who, standing on the backs of horses, holds himself up with marvelous balance, and, riding a horse with especial skill, practices the exercises of military arms. Under this star rising both Salmoneus and Bellerophon are said to have been born.

〔三〕在白羊的第十五度，朝北，御夫座升起。凡生在它升起时的人，会成为驾车手或驯马人，或跃过四马战车的人，或站在马背上以惊人的平衡稳住自己的人，又以特别的技巧骑马，练习军中武艺。据说萨尔摩纽斯与柏勒洛丰都生在这颗星升起时。

[4] In the 20th degree of Aries, toward the north, rises the Kid, which the Charioteer carries. Whoever are born when this star is rising promise one thing in their countenance and hide another secretly in their character. For they are of stern face, long beard and stubborn brow, so that they seem to imitate exactly the rule of life of Cato. But all this they feign with a counterfeit disposition. For by nature they are wanton, lascivious, always entangled in the perverse and lustful pleasures of their desires, and they always burn secretly with the cravings of love affairs.

〔四〕在白羊的第二十度，朝北，升起御夫所抱的小山羊。凡生在这颗星升起时的人，脸上许诺一样东西，性格里暗藏另一样。因为他们面容严厉，胡须长，额头倔强，好像恰恰在效法加图的生活准则。但这一切都是他们以假装的性情装出来的。因为他们天性放荡、淫逸，总缠在欲望的乖僻淫乐里，总暗中燃烧着恋情的渴求。

[5] They will also be separated from every duty of manly virtue, timid, weak, and such as shudder at every danger of battle. These, often taken by vicious lusts and occupied with the pursuits of perverted love, are driven to inflict death upon themselves. From this star are also born shepherds of sheep, but such as sing sweet measures of rustic song on the pipe.

〔五〕他们也会远离男子德行的一切职分，胆怯、软弱，对战斗的一切危险都战栗。这些人常被邪恶的情欲所俘，忙于乖僻之爱的追求，被逼得自寻死路。由这颗星也生出牧羊人，但却是以芦笛吹奏乡野之歌甜美曲调的。

[6] In the 27th degree of Aries rise the Hyades. Whoever is born at the rising of this star will be restless, turbulent, a man of the populace, and one who always stirs up the people with turbulent seditions, inflaming the minds of the common folk with clamorous and furious contentions, an enemy of quiet and peace, and desiring civil and domestic wars with a furious craving of mind. But for him various gains often arise from his constant restlessness. This star also makes cowherds, herdsmen and shepherds of sheep.

〔六〕在白羊的第二十七度，毕星团升起。凡生在这颗星升起时的人，会躁动不安、喧扰，是平民中人，总以喧扰的暴动煽动民众，以喧闹狂暴的争执点燃百姓的心，是安宁与和平的敌人，以心中狂热的渴求向往内战与家中的争斗。但他常从不断的躁动中得到种种收益。这颗星也造就牧牛人、牧人与牧羊人。

[7] In the 30th degree of Aries, the degree which always shows the whole sign above the earth, rises the Goat, which the fabling poets say gave Jupiter the nourishment of her milk. Whoever are born when this star is rising will be troubled by excessive trepidation of mind, and their body will always be assailed by a constant trembling. They are overwhelmed by slight disturbances, and are shaken by slight news with a heavy onset of fear. They will also be curious about all things, and whatever new thing has been said they will desire with an impatient craving, so that they always pursue every new curiosity with an eager desire.

〔七〕在白羊的第三十度，即总让整个星座显在地平之上的那一度，升起母山羊，善编故事的诗人说她以乳汁哺育了朱庇特。凡生在这颗星升起时的人，会被心中过度的惊惶所扰，身体总受不断的颤抖所侵。他们为细小的骚动所压倒，因细小的消息而受恐惧沉重的袭击。他们还会对一切事物好奇，凡说出什么新事，都以不耐的渴求想要知道，所以总以热切的欲望追逐每一件新奇的事。

[8] Since, then, we have said what these stars do at their rising, we must next say what they decree when placed at their setting. For as darkness is contrary to light, so is death to life. Life, therefore, will be at the rising, death will be found at the setting. So if the rising is in the Ascendant, as we have often said, the setting is in opposition to the Ascendant, that is, in the 7th place from the Ascendant.

〔八〕那么，既然我们已经说了这些星在升起时做什么，接下来就要说它们落在降落处时判定什么。因为正如黑暗与光明相反，死亡也与生命相反。所以，生命在升起处，死亡则在降落处找到。所以，倘若升起处在上升点，如我们常说的，降落处就与上升点对冲，即在从上升点起的第七宫。

[9] If the Ship is at the setting, or the Descendant falls partilely in the Ship, and the malefic planets aspect this place by a square or opposite aspect, the bitter misfortunes of shipwrecks are decreed. But if Saturn has been placed in the star itself, that is, in the Ship, they will perish by bitter deaths, drowned in the sea and in rivers.

〔九〕倘若船座在降落处，或下降点精确落在船座，而凶星以四分或对冲照着这个位置，会判定船难的苦难。但倘若土星落在这星本身，即在船座，他们会溺死在海里与河里，以痛苦的死亡死去。

[10] If Orion has been found at the setting of the nativity, such men will be born as are always harassed by various anxieties. These, sent on an embassy by their fellow citizens and placed on the journey itself, die abroad, carrying to the underworld a slight consolation: that perpetual honors, portraits, inscriptions and the distinctions of statues are decreed to them by their fellow citizens.

〔十〕倘若猎户座落在本命的降落处，会生下总被种种焦虑折磨的人。这些人受同胞派遣出使，就在旅途中死于异乡，带着一点微薄的慰藉下到冥府：同胞为他们定下永久的荣誉、画像、铭文与雕像的殊荣。

[11] If the Charioteer has been found at the setting of the nativity, and the ray of the malefic planets assails it, they are thrown from four-horse chariots and torn apart by wretched lacerations, so that with shattered body they suffer the bitter misfortunes of death; or, struck by lightning, they are overwhelmed by a sudden downfall of death; or they are raised upon a cross; or their legs are broken by public punishment.

〔十一〕倘若御夫座落在本命的降落处，又有凶星的光线侵袭它，他们会从四马战车上被摔下，被可怜地撕裂，身体粉碎，遭受死亡的苦难；或被雷电击中，被死亡的突然降临所压倒；或被举上十字架；或在公开的刑罚中被打断双腿。

[12] If the Kid which the Charioteer carries has been found at the setting, and Saturn has aspected it by a square or opposite aspect, those born die at the very moment of life, or, placed on the very threshold of birth, they are strangled as their mother's strength fails, or a bitter end of death is brought upon them by a swelling of the throat. But if Mars has been found at the setting with this star, deprived of every testimony of the benefic planets, it will make them [lacuna] embrace, or be sacrificed at an altar by fearful rites.

〔十二〕倘若御夫所抱的小山羊落在降落处，而土星以四分或对冲照着它，出生的人会在生命的那一刻就死去，或者就在出生的门槛上，因母亲力气衰竭而窒息，或因喉咙肿胀而遭死亡的苦结局。但倘若火星与这颗星同在降落处，被剥夺了吉星的一切见证，它会使他们〔此处原文有缺〕拥抱，或以可怕的仪式在祭坛上被献祭。

[13] But if the Hyades are at the setting, and the ray of the malefic planets assails this place, a sudden and unexpected end of death is decreed. For, overwhelmed by turbulent seditions and torn apart by the scattered hands of the populace, they will perish, so that the authors of their death can never be either found or named.

〔十三〕但倘若毕星团在降落处，而凶星的光线侵袭这个位置，会判定突然而意外的死亡结局。因为他们会被喧扰的暴动压倒，被民众四散的手撕裂而死，以致他们死亡的元凶永远找不到也叫不出名字。

[14] If the Goat is at the setting, they will have the means of their substance from landed estates. But these will be assailed by grave ill will on account of violated religious rites. They will also have substance either gathered from shipwrecks or acquired from a river.

〔十四〕倘若母山羊在降落处，他们会从田产得到家业的来源。但他们会因冒犯宗教仪礼而受沉重的憎恶侵袭。他们也会有从船难中收集来的、或从河流得来的家业。
