The Division of Aries.

白羊的划分

[1] Now I shall take care to make known to you which degrees you should look for in which parts of the signs. For all the 30 degrees are distributed through the whole bodies of the signs. So that you may know, then, where the first degree is, where the second, where the rest, I shall show you this whole matter briefly. The 1st and 2nd degrees of Aries are placed in the horns, the 3rd, 4th and 5th in the head, the 6th and 7th in the face, the 8th, 9th and 10th in the mouth, the 11th and 12th in the breast, the 13th, 14th and 15th in the whole neck, the 16th and 17th in the heart, the 18th and 19th in the right shoulder, the 20th, 21st and 22nd in the left shoulder, the 23rd, 24th and 25th in the belly; the hind feet hold the 26th and 27th degrees, the 28th and 29th are in the kidneys, and the tail holds the 30th degree. Thus the thirty degrees are distributed through the whole body of Aries.

The Division of Taurus.

[2] The 1st and 2nd degrees are placed in the horns of Taurus, the 3rd, 4th and 5th in the whole face, the 6th and 7th in the neck, the 8th, 9th and 10th in the forehead, the 11th and 12th in the heart, the 13th, 14th and 15th in the shoulders; the 16th and 17th are arranged in the forefeet of Taurus, the 18th, 19th and 20th are in the belly, the 21st in the knees, the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th are placed in the hind feet, the 26th and 27th are in the genitals of Taurus. The 28th and 29th are in the hips, and in the tail the 30th degree alone is found. Thus the number of the degrees is distributed through the whole body of Taurus. But the barbarian sphere has made another order of the degrees.

[3] The 1st and 2nd degrees of Gemini are placed in the head of that Twin who inclines toward the north, the 3rd, 4th and 5th are in the face of the same Twin, the 6th and 7th in the heart of the same Twin, the 8th, 9th and 10th in the breast, the 11th and 12th in the hands, the 13th, 14th and 15th in the feet. In that Twin who inclines toward the south we shall find the following degrees. But first we ought to know that the space which lies between the two Twins holds the 16th and 17th degrees of Gemini; the 18th, 19th and 20th are placed in the head of the southern Twin, the 21st, 22nd and 23rd in the face, the 24th, 25th and 26th under the belly, the 27th, 28th and 29th in the knees, and the 30th alone in the feet.

[4] The degrees of Cancer are divided thus. The 1st and 2nd degrees of Cancer are placed in the head, the 3rd, 4th and 5th in the neck, the 6th and 7th in the throat, and the three following we find in the eyes. Here is the cloud of Cancer, of which we have often spoken. The 11th and 12th are in the back, the three following extend from the stomach down to the groin, the three following we find in both arms of Cancer, the seven following are placed in the right feet of Cancer, the 26th and 27th are in the left feet of Cancer, the 28th and 29th are in the tips of the feet, and the 30th alone in the tail.

〔四〕巨蟹的度数这样划分。巨蟹的第一、第二度落在头，第三、四、五度在颈，第六、七度在喉，接下来的三度我们在眼睛里找到。这里就是我们常说的巨蟹之云。第十一、十二度在背，接下来的三度从胃延到腹股沟，再接下来的三度我们在巨蟹的两臂找到，再接下来的七度落在巨蟹的右足，第二十六、二十七度在巨蟹的左足，第二十八、二十九度在足尖，第三十度一度在尾。

[5] The degrees of Leo are divided thus. The 1st and 2nd degrees are placed in the head of Leo, the three following in the whole face and likewise in the nostrils, the three others following are set in the mouth of Leo, as many in the heart, three in the shoulders, three in the feet, the two following in the belly; the 20th, 21st and 22nd degrees we find in the back, the 23rd and 24th we look for in the breast, the three following remain in the knees, the 28th is in the genitals of Leo, the 29th in the kidneys, and the 30th alone is found in the tail.

〔五〕狮子的度数这样划分。第一、第二度落在狮子的头，接下来的三度在整个脸上，也在鼻孔，再接下来的另外三度安在狮子的嘴里，同样多的在心，三度在肩，三度在足，接下来的两度在腹；第二十、二十一、二十二度我们在背上找到，第二十三、二十四度我们在胸部去找，接下来的三度留在膝，第二十八度在狮子的生殖器，第二十九度在肾，第三十度一度见于尾。

[6] The degrees of Virgo are divided thus. The 1st and 2nd degrees are placed in the head of Virgo, the three following degrees in the face, the 6th and 7th in the hands, the three following in the spine, the 11th and 12th in the shoulder blades, the three following in order in the breast, the 16th and 17th in the right breast, the three following are placed in the right foot, [probably: the parts for the 21st–25th degrees followed, lost in all manuscripts] [lacuna] the 26th and 27th are placed in the left foot, the 28th and 29th in the kidneys, and the 30th alone in the genital part of the body.

[7] The degrees of Libra are divided thus. The 1st and 2nd degrees are placed in the head, the 3rd, 4th and 5th in the left pan of the balance, the 6th and 7th are placed in the right pan of the balance, the 8th, 9th and 10th are placed in the [probably: the part for these degrees is lost in all manuscripts] [lacuna], the 11th and 12th degrees are found in the left side of the beam, the three following we find in the right side of the beam, the 16th and 17th in the heart of Libra, the four following in order are known to be in the right hand of Libra, the 22nd and 23rd are placed in the breast; the three following are in its kidneys, the 27th and 28th extend down to the tips of the feet. The rest are placed in the count up to 30. In these degrees, that is, in the last ones, the earth is said to be set.

〔七〕天秤的度数这样划分。第一、第二度落在头，第三、四、五度在秤的左盘，第六、七度落在秤的右盘，第八、九、十度落在〔推测：此三度所属部位各抄本俱失〕〔此处原文有缺〕，第十一、十二度见于秤杆的左侧，接下来的三度我们在秤杆的右侧找到，第十六、十七度在天秤的心，接下来的四度依次已知在天秤的右手，第二十二、二十三度落在胸；接下来的三度在它的肾，第二十七、二十八度向下延到足尖。其余的度数落在数到三十为止的计数里。据说大地就安放在这些度数里，即最后几度。

[8] The degrees of Scorpio are divided thus. The 1st and 2nd degrees are placed in the head of Scorpio, the three following in the forehead, the 6th and 7th in the face, the three following are set in order in the neck, the two which follow these are placed in the back, after these the 13th, 14th and 15th are in the belly; the three following are placed in order in the right claw, two in the left, the two following are arranged in the right feet, three in the left feet, and the last five degrees are placed in its sting, which stretches out toward the north.

〔八〕天蝎的度数这样划分。第一、第二度落在天蝎的头，接下来的三度在额，第六、七度在脸，接下来的三度依次安在颈，紧接其后的两度落在背，此后第十三、十四、十五度在腹，接下来的三度依次落在右螯，两度在左螯，接下来的两度排在右足，三度在左足，最后五度落在它伸向北方的螫刺上。

[9] The degrees of Sagittarius are divided thus through his whole body. In the head of Sagittarius are placed the 1st and 2nd degrees, the three following are set in order in the face, the two which follow the preceding degrees are placed in the mouth of Sagittarius, the three following in order will be set in the neck of Sagittarius, the two following in the left hand, three others in the bow, two in the feet, and three others are placed in the back, two in the horse's belly, the three degrees which follow are placed in the hind feet down to the hooves, the 26th and 27th are placed in the genitals of Sagittarius, the two following are set in the right hand, and the 30th degree alone is placed in the tail.

[10] The degrees of Capricorn are divided thus through the whole body. Its 1st and 2nd degrees are placed in the horns, the three following in the head, the 6th and 7th are set in the face, the three following are arranged in order in the mouth of Capricorn. If anyone has the Moon in these degrees which are in the mouth of Capricorn, even if it is adorned with the testimonies of the benefics, it will make men impure of mouth, polluted by the stain of womanish lusts. Women too, if they have the Moon in these degrees, will be possessed by every vice of shameless impurity. The 11th is placed in the heart of Capricorn, the 12th and 13th in the neck, the two following in the shoulder blades, the three following are placed in order in the right hand, the two which follow these in the back, the three following in the belly, the four which follow are set in both flanks, and the last three are placed in order in the tail, as far as the end of the fin of Capricorn.

〔十〕摩羯的度数这样分布在整个身体上。它的第一、第二度落在角，接下来的三度在头，第六、七度安在脸，接下来的三度依次排在摩羯的嘴里。倘若有人的月亮落在摩羯嘴里的这几度，即使有吉星的见证装点，也会使人口中不洁，被女子般情欲的污点所玷污。女人若有月亮落在这几度，也会被无耻不洁的一切恶习所占据。第十一度落在摩羯的心，第十二、十三度在颈，接下来的两度在肩胛，接下来的三度依次落在右手，紧接其后的两度在背，接下来的三度在腹，再接下来的四度安在两肋，最后三度依次落在尾，直到摩羯之鳍的末端。

[11] The degrees of Aquarius are divided thus through his whole body. In his head are placed the 1st and 2nd degrees, the three following in the face, the 6th and 7th in the back, the three which come after these are placed in order in the breast, and the 11th and 12th are set in the right hand. The three of Aquarius which come after these are placed in the water, the 16th and 17th are set in the left hand, the two which follow these are set in the sides. Two others are set in the belly, the three following extend down to the tips of the feet, three others in the kidneys, and the last three we find in the jar of Aquarius.

〔十一〕宝瓶的度数这样分布在他的整个身体上。他的头上落着第一、第二度，接下来的三度在脸，第六、七度在背，紧接其后的三度依次落在胸，第十一、十二度安在右手。宝瓶紧接其后的三度落在水里，第十六、十七度安在左手，紧接其后的两度安在两侧。另外两度安在腹，接下来的三度向下延到足尖，另外三度在肾，最后三度我们在宝瓶的瓶里找到。

[12] The degrees of Pisces are divided thus through their whole body. But we ought to know that one Fish inclines toward the south, the other toward the north. The 1st and 2nd degrees, then, are placed in the mouth of the southern Fish, the 3rd, 4th and 5th are set in the head of the same Fish, two in the throat, the three which follow are placed in order in the neck, the 11th and 12th will be found at the end of the spine, and the back of the same Fish will receive the three following in order. The 16th, 17th and 18th we find in the cord of Pisces.

〔十二〕双鱼的度数这样分布在它们的整个身体上。但我们该知道，一条鱼倾向南方，另一条倾向北方。那么，第一、第二度落在南鱼的嘴，第三、四、五度安在同一条鱼的头，两度在喉，紧接的三度依次落在颈，第十一、十二度会在脊椎的末端找到，同一条鱼的背依次接受接下来的三度。第十六、十七、十八度我们在双鱼之绳上找到。

[13] In the Fish which inclines toward the north, the 19th is set in the head, the three following in the breast, the three others which follow in the neck, and the last two are placed in the tail. But the last three degrees of Pisces, which lie between Aries and Pisces, are always clouded over by a dark gloom. For this reason, if anyone has either the Sun or the Moon in these degrees without the testimony of the benefic planets, he will be oppressed either by perpetual blindness or by wretched weaknesses of the eyes.

〔十三〕在倾向北方的那条鱼身上，第十九度安在头，接下来的三度在胸，紧接的另外三度在颈，最后两度落在尾。但双鱼的最后三度，位于白羊与双鱼之间，总被黑暗的阴霾所遮蔽。为此，倘若有人的太阳或月亮落在这几度，而没有吉星的见证，他会受永久失明或可怜的眼疾所苦。

[14] From this division of the degrees, when you have begun to look for the place of defects and health, you will be able to find this whole matter most plainly and most easily. But this place the divine Nechepso, in order to find remedies for health, set out most diligently in clear treatises, as far as the divine genius of so great a man was able. The interpretation of these books I shall take care to make known to you at another time, Mavortius, our glory.

[15] Now I shall explain the measures of the individual degrees. From this explanation you will be able to find the whole measure of the zodiacal circle.

I shall also explain to you the measure and size of the signs, so that you may know that the effort of the divine mind has reached to all the secrets of the divinity.

[16] For the immortal soul, remembering the beginnings of its own majesty, did not learn these things but recognized them. What, then, has been said for one sign you will reckon through the 12 signs. When you have done this, the whole measure of the zodiacal circle will be shown to you. One degree of a single sign has 21,040 stadia. If you [probably: carry] [lacuna] this reckoning through the 30 degrees, you will know from this computation that the space of one sign has 631,200 stadia.
