On Those Skilled in Letters.

论精通文学的人

[1] If Mercury and the Sun have been placed together, so that, set in one sign, they are joined in an equal association of degrees, and the Moon does not aspect them by any aspect, or at least is not placed in the Ascendant, it will make men skilled in letters.

〔一〕倘若水星与太阳同在一处，即落在一个星座里，以度数相等的结伴相结，而月亮不以任何相位照着它们，或至少不落在上升点，就会造就精通文学的人。

On Famous Gladiators.

论著名的角斗士

[2] If Jupiter is placed in the terms of Mars in any sign whatever, and Mars in the terms of Jupiter, and, placed in the angles, they have aspected each other by a square or an opposite aspect, and in a day nativity the Sun is in the cast-down places from the Ascendant, or the Moon in a night nativity, famous gladiators will be born.

〔二〕倘若木星落在无论哪一个星座的火星之界，火星落在木星之界，两者都落在诸角，以四分或对冲彼此相照，而白天本命盘的太阳、或夜间本命盘的月亮落在从上升点算起低陷的宫位，就会生下著名的角斗士。

On Athletes.

论运动员

[3] If Mars has been found in the terms of Mercury, that is, in any sign whatever, and Mercury likewise in those of Mars, while Venus aspects them both by any aspect, athletes will be born. But if they have been placed in the angles, athletes will be born who are victors in every clash of contests. But if the testimony of Venus is lacking to Mercury and Mars, hoplomachi will be born, or masters of the wrestling school or of athletes, but such as never commit themselves to contests.

〔三〕倘若火星落在水星之界，即在无论哪一个星座，水星同样落在火星之界，而金星以任何相位照着它们两个，就会生下运动员。但倘若它们落在诸角，会生下在一切竞赛的交锋中都得胜的运动员。但倘若金星的见证对水星与火星欠缺，就会生下重装斗士，或摔角学校的教练、运动员的教练，但他们自己从不下场竞赛。

[4] But if, with Mars placed in the terms of Mercury and Mercury in turn in those of Mars, the testimony of Jupiter and Venus is conferred by any association of aspect, they will be boxers [text uncertain]; and if Venus alone lends it testimony, it will make runners. But these grow stronger if the place of Fortune and the place of occupation, found in an angle, is joined to the foregoing association of the planets.

〔四〕但倘若火星落在水星之界、水星反过来落在火星之界，而木星与金星的见证以任何相位的结伴加给它们，他们会成为拳击手〔原文疑有讹误〕；倘若只有金星给它见证，会造就赛跑者。但倘若落在某个角的幸运之宫与职业之宫，和前述行星的结伴相连，这些会更加强烈。

On Advocates and Orators.

[5] If Mercury has been found in its own terms or in those of Mars, and is placed in the cast-down places, and Mars, placed in the house of Mercury or in its terms, has aspected it by any aspect, they will make advocates and orators. But if Mercury, placed as we have said, is not in the cast-down places in a day nativity, and Mars, placed in the angles, in the degrees we have named, has aspected it with a favorable aspect, it will make great and famous orators.

〔五〕倘若水星落在自己的界或火星之界，又落在低陷的宫位，而落在水星之庙或水星之界的火星以任何相位照着它，就会造就辩护人与演说家。但倘若如我们所说落定的水星，在白天本命盘里不在低陷的宫位，而落在诸角、在我们所说那些度数里的火星以顺遂的相位照着它，就会造就伟大而著名的演说家。

On Physicians.

论医生

[6] If Mars and Venus, partilely joined, have aspected each other by a square aspect, observing the place in which occupation has been found, physicians will be born. But if they have exchanged their terms, that is, Mars is in the terms of Venus and Venus in the terms of Mars, and the favorable testimony of Mercury is added to them, ingenious physicians will be born. But if Mercury is not joined to them, cooks will be born.

〔六〕倘若精确相结的火星与金星以四分彼此相照，同时照着职业被找到的那个宫，就会生下医生。但倘若它们互换了界，即火星在金星之界、金星在火星之界，再加上水星顺遂的见证，就会生下有巧思的医生。但倘若水星不与它们相结，就会生下厨师。

On Musicians.

论乐师

[7] If Mercury, placed with Venus, whether by night or by day, has been found either in its own terms or in those of Venus, it will make musicians who play instruments with sweet melody. And also if they are not placed together, and Mercury is in the terms of Venus while Venus is in the terms of Mercury, they will bring about this same thing in like manner. But if Venus is in the terms of Mercury, and Mercury has been placed in a foreign sign or in foreign degrees, they will indeed have a musical sound of voice, but they will be cast down in a certain ignoble lowliness.

〔七〕倘若与金星同在的水星，无论昼夜，落在自己的界或金星之界，会造就以甜美旋律演奏乐器的乐师。又倘若它们不同在一处，而水星在金星之界、金星在水星之界，它们同样造成这事。但倘若金星在水星之界，而水星落在相异的星座或相异的度数，他们固然有音乐般的嗓音，却会被抛进某种卑贱的低下境地。

[8] In all cases, however, look for the place of Fortune, then for that of occupation, and the place will be found in the succedent of Fortune. When, therefore, you have found the place of occupation, see also in what place the lord of that sign is placed. And also examine in like manner the lord of the sign in which the place of Fortune has been found, and see in what place it too is placed; and when you have found these by careful reckoning, see which of them is more suitably placed, that is, which of them is placed in that very sign; and if both have been found in one place, see which has fallen more suitably.

〔八〕但在一切情形下，都要先找幸运之宫，再找职业之宫，而这个宫会在幸运之宫的续宫找到。所以当你找到了职业之宫，也要看那个星座的主星落在哪个宫位。还要同样察看幸运之宫所在星座的主星，看它又落在哪个宫位；当你以仔细的计算找到这些之后，看它们哪一颗落得更合宜，即哪一颗正落在那个星座里；倘若两颗同在一处，看哪一颗落得更合宜。

[9] But if they are not in the place of Fortune, see whether they are placed in the place of occupation, and if they have been found together in this place, see which has fallen more suitably. But if they are not in this place, see which of them aspects the Ascendant by an angular aspect, and then from this treatment you will be able to unfold the art.

〔九〕但倘若它们不在幸运之宫，看它们是否落在职业之宫；倘若它们同在这个宫，看哪一颗落得更合宜。但倘若它们不在这个宫，看它们哪一颗以角的相位照着上升点，然后由这一番处理，你就能展开这门技艺。

[10] For if Venus has been found so, she will make painters, inlayers, goldsmiths, silversmiths, musicians, namely according to the variety of the signs; Jupiter, on the other hand, will make merchants, farmers, moneylenders, and ship-masters, likewise according to the variety of the signs; Mars, physicians, barbers, and those whose art has its substance either from iron or from fire; Mercury, those who carry out their duties with the reed pen, or with the tongue, or with speech; Saturn, toilers, divers, ship-masters, but such as are weighed down by every kind of unhappiness. But all these, as we have often said, you will define according to the variety of the signs.

〔十〕因为倘若金星是这样被找到的，她会造就画师、镶嵌匠、金匠、银匠、乐师，当然是按星座的不同；另一方面，木星会造就商人、农夫、放债人与船主，同样按星座的不同；火星造就医生、理发匠，以及技艺以铁或火为根本的人；水星造就以芦笔、或以舌头、或以言辞履行职务的人；土星造就劳苦者、潜水者、船主，但却是被种种不幸压着的。但这一切，正如我们常说的，你都要按星座的不同来界定。

[11] But I shall show you by a brief reckoning how you may know whether they persevere in the decreed arts. See in which sign Mercury is placed, and seek out the lord of that sign, and when you have found it, ask whether it is well placed. For if it is well placed, they remain in their arts and will obtain the greatest gains from them; if badly, they will toil without profit in carrying out the duties of their art, and, worn out, they abandon these same arts.

〔十一〕但我要以一个简短的计算向你说明，怎样知道他们是否坚守所判定的技艺。看水星落在哪个星座，找出那个星座的主星，找到之后，问它是否落得好。因为倘若它落得好，他们会留在自己的技艺里，并从中获得极大的收益；倘若落得不好，他们履行技艺的职务会劳而无利，疲惫之下便放弃这些技艺。

[12] These things, Mavortius, our glory, we have set out for you, gathered by an exact reckoning, so that our modest ability might make known to you in clear interpretations all the secrets of this divine art. But with these set out, let the whole discourse be transferred to the exposition of the barbarian sphere.
