XX. On the Climacteric Years.

[1] When, then, you have begun to treat a nativity and have examined the whole course of the planets with careful reasoning, and have seen the power of the places and angles, and have gathered everything by a partile method, then, standing at the very beginnings of the effects, you ought to gather with careful reasoning, in the first place, nothing other than the time of life and the power of the lord of the nativity. For frequently, even when certain planets are well arranged, the lord of the nativity decrees narrow spans of living, and in part the whole of what the well-placed planets had decreed is changed by the untimely arrival of death.

[2] You ought therefore to examine the time of life with careful reasoning from the Sun and the Moon, and from the degree of the Ascendant, and, what is most important, from the lord of the nativity; all of which, although they have been stated here and there in this work, have nevertheless been specifically set out and explained in a separate book, which we wrote for our Murinus on the lord of the nativity and the chronocrator. We must therefore labor and seek the lord of the nativity with every effort of attention, so that, once the span of life has been found through him and divided by the chronocrator among the individual planets, we may be able to explain all that has been decreed.

[3] Indeed, besides the other climacterics, the years of seven and of nine as well, running in multiplied succession through the whole time of life, always afflict a man with various perils of danger by a certain natural and hidden principle; hence the 63rd year, because it receives the sum of both numbers alike, has been called androclas; for nine times seven years make 63, and again seven times nine years in like manner make 63. Since, then, the course of both numbers meets in this year on equal terms, it always imposes the peril of great danger. For if the years of seven and of nine, which the Greeks call hebdomadic and enneadic, always bring grave dangers upon men, what will the 63rd year do, which completes the multiplied sum of both numbers, bound to each other? For this reason it was called androclas by the Egyptians, because it breaks and weakens the whole substance of a man.

[4] Among the other dangers, then, which are decreed by the malefic stars according to the risings of the signs and according to their threatening aspects, we ought to gather these dangers too with careful reasoning; and both in those dangers and in these which we gather from the reckoning of years by sevens or by nines, we ought to inspect, at the very time when the peril of danger is impending, with what aspect the benefic stars aspect the Moon and the lord of the times and the lord of the nativity.

[5] For if Jupiter and Venus are found in favorable places of the nativity, in the Ascendant, and have aspected the Moon by a partile aspect, and have also seen the lord of the times and the lord of the nativity, the threatening onsets of dangers are relieved by the saving support of the benefic stars, and men are freed from impending dangers.

[6] Dangers, however, are not of one substance; for every peril of danger is brought about either from accusations, or from denunciations, or from plots, or from voyages, or from journeys, or from losses and the forfeiture of the patrimony, or from sicknesses, or from venereal desires, or from weakness of body, or from beasts, or from the collapse of buildings, or from mire and precipices.

[7] When, then, you have seen what kind of peril is in the place, look, as we said before, at how the benefic stars aspect the Ascendant or the Moon, and from what place, and how they aspect the lord of the nativity and the lord of the times, so that, when you are assured about the substance of life, you may then see by what means the perils of impending death or of pressing danger can be avoided.

[8] You ought also to look at the star that has stirred up the danger, that is, the one that is lady of the times, and see in what place, in what sign, and in which degrees of the nativity it is placed at the time when it decrees the danger, and how the benefic stars aspect it. For if the star that causes the danger is found in good places, or in the signs and terms in which it rejoices, and is aspected by the benefics, and is well placed in the nativity, the peril of the impending danger is softened. But if it is otherwise, and the star has obtained the licence of harming through the power granted to it, it causes the man to be entangled in the snares of inextricable miseries, so that the impending death or danger can by no means be avoided.

XXI. On Occupations.

[1] Now we ought to know which planet decrees occupations in individual men, or which occupations it decrees; and then we ought to gather with careful reasoning in what place it is situated. The planets that decree occupations for men are Mars, Venus, and Mercury. That one of these three decrees the occupation which is found either in the Midheaven, or in the right trine of the Midheaven, or in the left, or in the other angles.

[2] Mars. If, then, Mars has decreed the occupation and is well placed and joined to the benefic stars by a favorable aspect, and the nativity is by night, it gives arms, generalships, and glory, and decrees the right of the sword and the insignia of the greatest powers, according as the power of the whole decree has raised itself, or at any rate it makes famous and noble arts with fire and with iron, such as are carried to the knowledge of all by a renowned mark of nobility. But placed in idle and cast-down places, and in the signs in which it does not rejoice, it decrees certain honorable arts, but with obscurity.

[3] But if, with Mars so placed, the benefic stars have lent it their rays, the native will attain from the occupation or from the work, whatever has been decreed, both a certain glory and the means of substance. But if Mars, deserted by the benefics, itself holds the power of decreeing the occupation, and the malefic stars have aspected it, it will make men subordinate and toiling, who spend more than is conferred on them from their arts.

[4] Venus. But if Venus has decreed the occupation and is either in her own house or in her own terms, and is placed partilely in the Ascendant, or in the Midheaven, or in the 11th place from the Ascendant, or in the 5th — for she decrees when placed in these places too — and if the nativity is by night, she will give great occupations and decrees the insignia of great glory, especially if Jupiter has aspected her so placed with a trine aspect, or if the Moon, diminished in light, is moving toward her; for she places the native in such licence of power that the one who has Venus so is compared to kings or emperors.

[5] Then she decrees golden crowns, then bordered togas and golden palm-embroidered robes, and ennobles the native with the power of the consular or proconsular fasces; according to the clime and the measure of the nativity, she will make gymnasiarchs, Asiarchs, priests of the provinces, always famous and noble, men the insignia of whose honor are carried through the expanses of the whole world, pleasing, lovable, charming, just, and men whom all desire to benefit in any way they can; but to them all the insignia of good fortune are conferred by women or by wives.

[6] But if she is not in these places, nor in these signs, nor in these terms, and is found in alien signs or in alien terms, she will give arts that are always honorable and elegant; for she makes goldsmiths, gilders, gold-beaters, silversmiths, musicians, organ-players, painters. But if she is found in cast-down and idle places, she will make innkeepers, cook-shop keepers, shopkeepers, perfume sellers, and men accustomed to sell, on feast days and holy days, crowns composed of a variety of flowers, and whatever things are needed for gladness or for delight.

[7] But in general, if a benefic star is with the planet that decrees the occupation, or has aspected it with a trine aspect, it decrees glory, fame, and nobility for the occupation itself and grants the greatest increases of means; and the more benefic stars have conferred their rays and their associations on the planet that decrees the occupation, the more immense are the increases of good fortune conferred, and the native receives from the occupation itself the name of great glory, especially if the benefic stars that bear testimony, moving in direct course, are found in a morning rising.

[8] But if the malefic stars alone, without the testimony of the benefic stars, have aspected the planet that decrees the occupation, they decree a humble life and subordinate and toilsome occupations, and render men such as are assailed by continual infamy in those very occupations. But if malefic and benefic stars agree on equal terms with the planet that decrees the occupation, all of them do all things according to their own nature of decreeing; and those will be stronger which have joined themselves by the greater aspect.

[9] Mercury. If Mercury has decreed the occupation and is placed in the principal places, as we said before of Venus and of Mars, and is in its exaltation, or in its own terms, or in its own house, it decrees everything according to its own nature; for it makes either kings, or men set over judges, or causes the royal accounts to be entrusted to them, or makes teachers of emperors, or decrees occupations like these in every way according to the nature of the signs and to the power of those planets that have lent it their testimony. It also makes orators, chief physicians, astrologers, star-gazers, haruspices; but it decrees these things according to the power of the signs.

[10] For placed in solid signs it decrees the greatest judgeships and accounts. But if it is found in tropical signs, it decrees offices from exchanges or from interpretations. Placed in equinoctial signs, it sets them over the public weights. But found in double signs, it decrees in this way sagacious and talented men, inventors, astrologers, and everything that seems similar to these arts and disciplines.

[11] In general, then, we ought to know that whenever Mercury has decreed the occupation, if it is adorned with the testimonies of the benefic stars, it decrees glory, advancement in honors, and the insignia of the greatest authority; whereas the malefic stars, on the contrary, decree abasement, humiliations, miseries, and infamies; but in these very decrees there is no small difference arising from the nature of the planets.

[12] For Mars, bearing testimony, will make leaders who are bold, dangerous, quickly moved, deceived in every way, and never subjugated by the licence of any power. But Saturn will produce men who are gentle, lofty, silent, and puffed up, and who [lacuna] everything with dissimulation. You will have to observe this in the other two planets as well; and when all these things have been gathered by you with careful reasoning, you will be able to explain most truly the whole substance of the decree, and in this way the characters of men are so depicted by you that, as in a painting, all the lineaments of their bodies are discerned from your responses, and the hidden effect of their characters is discovered.
