XIX. On the Lord of the Nativity.

[1] [lacuna] by what method you ought to gather the lord of the nativity, whom the Greeks call the oecodespotes; for he holds the sum of the whole nativity, and from him the individual planets obtain the licence of their decree. If he is well placed in the signs in which he rejoices or in which he is exalted, or in his own domiciles, and the nativity is of his own condition, and he is neither struck by the harmful aspect of the malefics nor deprived of the support of the benefic stars, he decrees all good things according to the quality of his nature, and the full number of years. But if he is impeded by the malefics or deserted by the benefics, all his efficacy is weakened and languishes.

〔一〕〔此处原文有缺〕你应当以什么方法汇集本命之主，希腊人称之为奥科德斯波忒斯；因为它执掌整个本命盘的总和，各颗行星都从它那里得到论断的许可。倘若它落位良好，在它喜乐的星座、或入旺的星座、或在自己的庙，本命盘又属于它自己的状态，它既不被凶星有害的相位打击，也不失去吉星的扶持，就依其本性的品质判定一切好事，以及完满的年数。但倘若它受凶星妨碍，或被吉星离弃，它的一切效力就被削弱而萎靡。

[2] How you may find him I shall explain, after setting out all the opinions of the ancients. Some wished to gather the lord of the nativity by this method, saying that the lord of the nativity is the planet which, placed in the principal places of the nativity, has been found in its own signs or in its own terms. Others sought the lord of the nativity from the Sun and the Moon, saying that the lord of the nativity is the planet in whose terms the Sun and the Moon have been found, that is, the Sun in a day nativity, the Moon in a night nativity; and this has reason in it. Others said that the lord is the planet that has been found to be lord of the Moon's exaltation. Others again said that the lord is the planet into whose sign the Moon, after the man is born, leaving the sign in which it is, has entered in the second place.

[3] And we too follow this method; for it is the truest and approved by all. But do you too examine with careful reasoning all these things we have said: you will find that the lord of the nativity is so placed and found [text uncertain]; and since, then, your purpose follows this method, we ought also to instruct you with an example.

[4] If anyone at the first hour of his birth has had the Moon in Aries, then, because after Aries the Moon makes its passage to Taurus in the second place, Venus will hold the lordship of the nativity, because Taurus is the sign of Venus; and so with the other signs. This, however, we ought to know: that neither the Sun nor the Moon is made lord in any nativity; for, being lords of the whole, they disdain to obtain lordships. If, then, the Moon is found in Gemini on the day on which the man is born, it shows the lord of the nativity neither in Cancer, that is, in its own house, nor in Leo, that is, in the house of the Sun. But when it has passed these signs, that is, Cancer and Leo, and has come to the sign of Virgo, then it shows the lord of the nativity; and so, because Virgo is the house of Mercury, Mercury is made lord of the nativity.

[5] Saturn. If Saturn has been made lord of the nativity and is favorably placed in the nativity, and the waxing Moon has decreed the lordship to it, it will make men puffed up, lifted high in spirit, honored, good, grave, of good counsel, whose good faith is always proved by right judgment and who carry out all business by the methods of right judgment; but toward their wives and children they will always be of estranged affection; they will indeed be retiring and keep to themselves, taking little food and delighting in much drinking. In body they will be of moderate size, pale, languid, with a cold belly, men accustomed to vomit continually, whom a malignant humor always assails and whom a pain gathered within torments continually. Their life will be malicious, toilsome, anxious, entangled in continual pains of mind, and they will have the support of life about water or in a watery place.

〔五〕土星。倘若土星成为本命之主，在本命盘里落位有利，而盈长的月亮把主位判给它，就会使人自负、心志高扬、受尊重、善良、庄重、多良谋，他们的诚信总以正确的判断得到证明，以正确判断的方法办理一切事务；但对妻子儿女，他们总是情意疏远；他们当然会退隐自守，吃得少而喜好多饮。身体上他们中等身材，苍白，萎靡，腹部寒冷，惯于不断呕吐，总被恶性体液侵袭，体内积聚的疼痛不断折磨他们。他们的一生会多恶意、劳苦、焦虑，缠于不断的心中痛苦，而在水边或多水之地有生计的依靠。

[6] But if, having been made lord of the nativity, it is either in its own house or in its own terms, or in the house of Jupiter or in his terms, or in the house of the Sun, and the nativity is by day, it will make men famous and noble in life and decrees every good fortune according to the power of the places. But if it is found in the terms of Mars or in the house of Mars or in the house of the Moon, it will make men sad, toilsome, squalid, humble, inglorious, and such as are made squalid by continual [lacuna] of mournful sadness.

〔六〕但倘若它成为本命之主，在自己的庙或自己的界，或在木星的庙或其界，或在太阳的庙，本命盘又是白天的，就会使人一生出名而高贵，并依宫位的力量判定一切好运。但倘若它被发现在火星的界、或火星的庙、或月亮的庙，就会使人忧伤、劳苦、困顿、卑微、无荣，并被悲伤的愁苦不断的〔此处原文有缺〕弄得困顿不堪。

[7] But these evils will be stronger if the nativity is by night and the Moon, diminished in light, has decreed the lordship to it; for then it strips the head bare through thinness of hair, or makes men shamefully bald as their hair falls out, and those whose eyes are wont to be impeded by sudden blindness or whose eyes lose their sharpness through continual cataract. It also makes men with lung disease, dropsical, gouty, epileptic, spastic, especially if, having been made lord of the nativity and placed in this fall of signs or degrees, it has received the rays of the waning Moon.

〔七〕但倘若本命盘是夜间的，而光减的月亮把主位判给它，这些恶就会更强；因为那时它使头发稀疏而头顶光秃，或使人头发脱落而难看地秃顶，以及眼睛常被突然的失明妨碍、或眼睛因不断的白内障而失去锐利的人。它还使人患肺病、水肿、痛风、癫痫、痉挛，尤其是倘若它成为本命之主，落在星座或度数的这种陷落之处，又接受了亏缺的月亮的光线。

[8] But if benefic stars meet it with a good aspect when it holds the lordship and is placed in the way we have said, either the help of some god or skilful medicine will cure these illnesses. But if a malignant star has armed Saturn so placed, as we have said, these evils we have mentioned are increased with the greatest growth of calamity. It will cause deaths from long and grievous illness, a sickness brought on by a vicious flood of the humors; and they die in places either moist or watery, or hidden and unknown. If it is in a house or in the degrees of Mercury, it makes evildoers, poisoners, wicked men, perjurers, enemies of their brothers and parents alike.

〔八〕但倘若当它执掌主位、又照我们所说的方式落位时，吉星以良好的相位与它相遇，那么或者某位神的帮助、或者高明的医术，会治愈这些疾病。但倘若一颗凶恶的星武装了这样落位的土星，如我们所说，我们提到的这些恶就以灾祸极大的增长而增加。它会造成久而重的疾病之死，即由体液恶性泛滥所致的病；他们死在或潮湿多水、或隐蔽不为人知的地方。倘若它在水星的庙或水星的度数，就会造就作恶者、下毒者、邪恶之人、发伪誓者，与兄弟和父母同样为敌的人。

[9] Jupiter. If Jupiter is lord of the nativity, it will make men of great spirit, aiming at great things, always trusted, always swelling toward great actions, giving to themselves more than the means of their patrimony or their power demands, commanding, and in all their actions noble, glorious, honorable, lovers of elegance, cheerful, desiring to be delighted in every way, taking very much food, loving their friends, effective, sociable, straightforward, and accustomed always to do good.

〔九〕木星。倘若木星是本命之主，就会使人心志宏大，志在大事，总受信任，总向着大作为膨胀，给自己的超过祖产或权力所能承担的，善号令，在一切作为中高贵、有荣耀、可敬，喜爱雅致，愉快，想以种种方式得到快乐，吃得很多，爱朋友，能干，合群，坦率，惯于总是行善。

[10] Their body is composed with a middling moderation, and the very form of the body will be clean, handsome, and fair; they will indeed have beautiful eyes and head, are adorned with thick locks of hair, and set down their footsteps with a firm tread; their life will be glorious, notable, full of the assurance of good fortune, and they indeed attain whatever they desire. They are also always adorned with good company and protected by the testimony of great men; they always love their wives and children with tender affection, and their sons attain the greatest increases of dignity, so that from their sons' honors a great merit of dignity accrues to them as well; it will cause the illness of sufferers from heart disease from wine or from indigestion, and their death will come from cheerfulness, from a relaxing of the bowels, and from venereal intercourse.

〔十〕他们的身体以中等的匀称构成，身体的样子本身洁净、俊美、白皙；他们当然会有美丽的眼睛与头，以浓密的头发为饰，以稳健的步伐落下脚步；他们的一生会有荣耀、引人注目、满怀好运的把握，他们当然会得到想要的一切。他们还总以良好的交往为饰，受大人物的见证保护；他们总以温柔的情意爱妻子儿女，他们的儿子得到尊位极大的增长，以致从儿子的荣誉中，大的尊位之功也归到他们身上；它会造成心脏病患者的病，由酒或消化不良引起，他们的死会来自欢乐、来自肠道松弛，以及来自男女交合。

[11] But Jupiter, when it is lord of the nativity, you ought to regard by the same methods as Saturn, and the other planets as well; for the example given for one ought to instruct you in the rest too. For if Jupiter has been made lord of the nativity and has held the first angles of the nativity, in its own house, or in its exaltation, or in its own terms, or in the house of the Sun, or in the exaltation of the Sun, and the nativity is by day, and it is adorned with the testimonies of the benefic stars, and the Moon, full of light, is moving toward it, and Mars, holding another angle of the nativity, neither opposes it nor assails the light of the waxing Moon, it decrees the full ornaments of good fortune.

〔十一〕但木星为本命之主时，你应当用与土星同样的方法看待，其余行星也是如此；因为为一颗星所举的例子，也应当教你其余各颗。因为倘若木星成为本命之主，占住本命的第一等四角，在自己的庙、或自己的旺、或自己的界、或太阳的庙、或太阳的旺，本命盘又是白天的，又以吉星的见证为饰，光满的月亮行向它，而火星占住本命的另一角，既不对冲它，也不攻击盈长月亮的光，它就判定好运完满的饰物。

[12] But if it is in the signs in which it is depressed, or in the terms of others, or in the cast-down and idle places of the nativity, and both it and the Moon are struck by the malefics with a malicious aspect, failing in strength and deprived of all licence of power, it decrees nothing great in the nativity, nor the full number of years; for if the malefic stars have cast their rays on it from square or from opposition, they subtract, according to their strength, a number of years from the decreed time.

〔十二〕但倘若它在自己受压低的星座，或在别星的界，或在本命低陷而闲置的宫位，它与月亮都被凶星以恶意的相位打击，力量衰微，失去一切权力的许可，它就在本命盘里不判定任何大事，也不判定完满的年数；因为倘若凶星从四分或对冲向它投射光线，它们就依自己的力量从所判定的时限中减去若干年数。

[13] Mars. If Mars has been made lord of the nativity, it will make men harsh, unconquered, subjugated by no means, restless, contentious, bold, dangerous, violent, men who are often deceived by schemes, voracious, who digest much food with the greatest ease, strong, even-tempered, fiery, with red hair and bloodshot eyes, commanding, always claiming for themselves the chief insignia of power, always practising arts with fire and with red-hot iron; but perverse through heat of mind, they do not have good affections toward wife, children, or friends; bold, and coveting the property of others with envious desire. It will cause defects from fire and iron, that is, cuttings or burnings, and frequently hurls them down from the highest places or breaks the extremities of the body; it will cause death either sudden or violent.

〔十三〕火星。倘若火星成为本命之主，就会使人严厉、不可征服、任何手段都制服不了，不安分，好争，大胆，危险，凶暴，常被诡计欺骗，贪吃，极容易消化大量食物，强健，性情平和，火热，红发而眼睛充血，善号令，总为自己要求权力的首要徽章，总以火与烧红的铁从事技艺；但因心中的燥热而乖戾，对妻子、儿女或朋友没有好情意；大胆，以嫉妒的欲望觊觎别人的财物。它会造成来自火与铁的缺损，即切割或灼烧，常把他们从最高处抛下，或折断身体的末端；它会造成或突然或横暴的死。

[14] If it has received the full Moon, it either kills them when they are seized by brigands, or hands them over, accused, to the public authorities, and causes them, oppressed by denunciations, to be struck by public punishments. And if its malice has been inflamed by the rays of the Sun, it decrees fires and the ruin of public burning. But it decrees these things more strongly if, having been made lord in a day nativity, it has occupied the principal angles, or if it is found in the Midheaven or in the Descendant, and the Moon, placed in another angle, full, has thrust itself upon the rays of Mars, and if, full, it has decreed the lordship to Mars.

[15] But if the nativity is by night, and it is found in the house of Saturn or in the house of Jupiter, or in their terms, or in its own house or in its own terms, and is placed in the fifth or in the 11th place from the Ascendant, or in the Midheaven, or in the Ascendant, and has aspected the waning Moon, or the waning Moon has decreed the lordship to Mars, and the star of Jupiter joins itself to the angles by a trine aspect, it will make generals and tribunes, terrible and powerful, who hold the greatest regions and many cities and to whom the judgments of the whole world are entrusted.

〔十五〕但倘若本命盘是夜间的，它被发现在土星的庙或木星的庙，或在它们的界，或在自己的庙或自己的界，又落在从上升点起的第五宫或第十一宫，或在中天，或在上升点，并照着亏缺的月亮，或亏缺的月亮把主位判给火星，而木星之星以三分相位与四角相结，就会造就将领与军团长，可怕而有权势，据有极大的地区与许多城市，整个世界的审判托付给他们。

[16] But if it is placed in the Descendant, that is, in the 7th place from the Ascendant, with this mixture we have described, after all these things it makes them die a violent death. For Mars placed in the Descendant always decrees the peril of a violent death, but the death itself, as we have frequently said, is brought about according to the quality of the signs, all the kinds of which we have shown with specific indication in the third book; but whenever it is placed in the terms of Jupiter and is softened by the testimonies of Jupiter or of Venus, it lays aside the ardor of its malice.

[17] Venus. If Venus has been made lady of the nativity, she makes men delightful, cheerful, ready of speech, given to continual play, lovable, pleasing, charming, amorous, lustful, dutiful, just, and men with whom the bond of friendship remains whole and uncorrupted. Their body will be tall and fair; they will have eyes shining with the pleasing splendor of charm, with thick hair either softly waved or arranged with the pleasing charm of beauty, or she makes them long-haired with curling ringlets of locks; even-tempered, delighting in much drinking, taking little food, desiring venereal intercourse with frequent ardor of desire, and digesting all foods most easily; they will indeed be noble and elegant throughout their life, men whose life, mind, and way of living always cling to musical delights.

〔十七〕金星。倘若金星成为本命之女主，就使人可爱、愉快、口齿伶俐、总好游戏、惹人爱、讨人喜欢、有魅力、多情、好色、尽责、公正，与他们的友谊纽带总是完好无损。他们的身体会高而白皙；他们会有以魅力的悦人光彩闪耀的眼睛，浓密的头发或柔柔地起伏、或以美的悦人魅力梳理整齐，或者她使他们长发而卷着鬈曲的发绺；性情平和，喜好多饮，吃得少，以频频的欲望之火渴求男女交合，最容易消化一切食物；他们一生当然会高贵而雅致，他们的生活、心思与起居总依附于音乐的欢愉。

[18] But she decrees all these things according to the quality of the signs and places. For placed in cast-down places and having obtained the lordship of the nativity, she makes organ-players and painters, but such as paint complete likenesses of bodies. But placed in the principal places of the nativity, she will make men famous and crowned with diadems or with the golden fillets of crowns, discoverers of sacred disciplines, and she will bind husbands to wives and wives to husbands with good affections.

[19] But as an evening star she aids women, as a morning star men; for this reason they have said that the deity of Venus is two-formed. For she will make men fruitful and rejoicing in many offspring, men on whom the greatest joy is conferred by their daughters; but she causes defects about the natural and necessary parts, and decrees deaths that are well known and glorious. But the mixtures of this star too, when it has the lordship, we ought to gather with careful inquiry, as with the other stars, and also the power of its condition.

[20] For if in a night nativity she is found in the fifth place from the Ascendant, or in the eleventh, or in the Ascendant, or in the Midheaven, or in her own house, or in her exaltation, or in her own terms, and has received the lordship from the waning Moon, and Jupiter, well placed, aspects her with a trine aspect, or if the Moon, diminished in light, is moving toward her without the testimony of Saturn, she decrees golden bordered togas and the insignia of the consular fasces.

〔二十〕因为倘若在夜间的本命盘里，她被发现在从上升点起的第五宫、或第十一宫、或上升点、或中天，或在自己的庙、或自己的旺、或自己的界，又从亏缺的月亮那里接受了主位，而落位良好的木星以三分相位照着她，或者光减的月亮在没有土星见证的情况下行向她，她就判定金色的紫边袍与执政官束棒的徽章。

[21] But if Mars has aspected this conjunction with a trine aspect, along with these honors she also grants a notable licence of power and proconsular command, especially if Mars is found in its own house or in the house of Jupiter, or in its own terms or in the terms of Jupiter, or in its exaltation, and if Venus has been freed from the rays of the Sun.

〔二十一〕但倘若火星以三分相位照着这次会合，她在这些荣誉之外，还赐予显著的权力许可与代执政官的统辖权，尤其是倘若火星被发现在自己的庙或木星的庙，或在自己的界或木星的界，或在自己的旺，又倘若金星已脱离太阳的光线。

[22] But if, with Venus so placed, Mercury is found either in its own house or in its own terms or in its exaltation, or in the house of Venus or in the terms of Venus, and is placed in favorable places of the nativity, it will make poets, but poets whose songs are ennobled by the shining splendor of grace; but if the nativity is by day, it decrees none the less the same things, but weakens all of them to some small degree. But if the nativity is by night and Saturn, placed in the angles of the nativity or in favorable places, has struck this mixture with a malignant aspect and has aspected the rays of the waning Moon, all that we promised above is impeded.

〔二十二〕但倘若金星这样落位时，水星被发现在自己的庙、或自己的界、或自己的旺，或在金星的庙或金星的界，又落在本命的吉利宫位，就会造就诗人，而且是诗歌以恩宠的闪耀光彩而高贵的诗人；但倘若本命盘是白天的，它照样判定同样的事，只是把它们都削弱一点。但倘若本命盘是夜间的，而土星落在本命的四角或吉利宫位，以恶意的相位打击这种混合，又照着亏缺月亮的光线，我们上面所许诺的一切都会受阻。

[23] But if Venus, having obtained the lordship, is found in cast-down or in idle places, in a place or house of Saturn or in the terms of Saturn, and the Moon, placed in the angles of the nativity, is moving by night toward Saturn diminished, or by day toward Mars full of light, she will make men impure, unchaste, lustful, entangled in continual mischances of calamity, assailed by public infamy on account of these desires of love, or entangled in the perils of public trial on account of unlawful desires or the charge of adultery, and on this account they die a violent death by a notorious end, especially if, with these so placed, Mars, placed in the Descendant of the nativity, aspects Venus with a threatening aspect.

〔二十三〕但倘若取得主位的金星被发现在低陷或闲置的宫位，在土星的宫位或庙、或土星的界，而月亮落在本命的四角，夜间光减而行向土星，或白天光满而行向火星，她就会使人不洁、不贞、好色，缠于不断的灾祸遭遇，因这些情欲受公众恶名攻击，或因不法的欲望或通奸的罪名缠于公审之险，并因此以众所周知的结局横死，尤其是倘若在这些如此落位时，火星落在本命的下降点，以威胁的相位照着金星。

[24] Mercury. If Mercury is lord of the nativity, it will make men sagacious, talented, learning everything, modest, eager to learn the secrets of all the arts; and if, when it has obtained the lordship of the nativity, it is found in its own house, or in its own terms, or in its exaltation, or in the house of Venus, and has set itself under a trine aspect, it will make poets and orators, adorned with an abundance of pleasing speech.

〔二十四〕水星。倘若水星是本命之主，就会使人机敏、有才、样样都学、谦逊、渴望学得一切技艺的奥秘；而倘若它取得本命之主位时，被发现在自己的庙、或自己的界、或自己的旺、或在金星的庙，又置身于三分相位之下，就会造就诗人与演说家，以丰沛悦耳的言辞为饰。

[25] But if it is found in the house of the Moon, it will make men eloquent, but men whose speech is delivered without grace. But if it is found in the house of Saturn or in his terms, and Jupiter and Venus aspect it with a good aspect, and either it is itself in the angles of the nativity, or Jupiter has occupied some angle of the nativity or is in the third place from the Ascendant, it will make men devoted to certain religions and knowing secret and magical arts, astrologers, star-gazers, haruspices, men seeking the secrets of all religions and of the heavens themselves, and men to whom the duties of embassies are entrusted, loving their brothers and eager to protect their kinsmen by marriage with the faithful help of kinship, men who bind the rights of friendship with the tightest bonds, just, religious, removed from every stain of extravagance, and accomplishing everything by the method of firm counsel.

〔二十五〕但倘若它被发现在月亮的庙，就会使人善辩，但言辞说出来没有风致。但倘若它被发现在土星的庙或其界，而木星与金星以良好的相位照着它，并且它自己在本命的四角，或木星占住了本命的某一角，或在从上升点起的第三宫，就会使人献身于某些宗教，通晓秘密与魔法的技艺，做占星家、观星者、脏卜师，探求一切宗教与诸天本身之奥秘的人，以及受托出使职务的人，爱兄弟，渴望以亲属忠实的帮助保护姻亲，以最紧的纽带维系友谊的权利，公正、虔敬，远离一切挥霍的污点，以坚定的谋划完成一切。

[26] But if Mars has applied itself to it in any manner, or has aspected it from square, and Mercury is in the third place of the nativity, in human or vocal signs, adorned with the testimonies of Jupiter, with Jupiter placed partilely in the Ascendant or in the Midheaven, it will make advocates and orators whose talent shines with the unconquered licence of power, and it makes the native obtain everything by his own strength.

〔二十六〕但倘若火星以任何方式趋附它，或从四分照着它，而水星在本命的第三宫，在人形或有声的星座，以木星的见证为饰，木星又精确到度地落在上升点或中天，就会造就辩护人与演说家，他们的才华以不可征服的权力许可闪耀，并使本命之人凭自己的力量得到一切。

[27] But if Saturn, placed in favorable places of the nativity, has aspected this mixture in a night nativity, it will cause plots, dangers, accusations, perils, and it attaches the charge of popular hatred. But if, with Saturn aspecting so, Mars is found in the Descendant and has received the full light of the waxing Moon, it will make them, publicly accused on account of evil deeds or forbidden rites or counterfeited money, perish by the sword.

〔二十七〕但倘若落在本命吉利宫位的土星，在夜间的本命盘里照着这种混合，就会造成阴谋、危险、控告、险境，并附加上民众憎恨的罪名。但倘若土星这样照着时，火星被发现在下降点，又接住了盈长月亮的满光，就会使他们因恶行、或被禁的祭仪、或伪造的钱币而被公开控告，死于剑下。

[28] Mercury, when it is lord of the nativity, will make the body always of middling size and slender, and men whose face a faint pallor makes livid, but it adorns the eyes with the comeliness of beauty. They will indeed take little food and drink, and to all of them a substance is conferred by merit of their learning, and they are wont, on account of their learning or the ornament of their learned speech, to discharge continual embassies, and the secrets of hidden and religious writings delight them.

〔二十八〕水星为本命之主时，会使身体总是中等身材而纤瘦，脸色因淡淡的苍白而发青，但它以美的端好装点眼睛。他们当然吃喝都少，凭学问之功，资财授予他们所有人，他们惯于因学问或博学言辞的光彩而不断出使，隐秘而属宗教的典籍的奥秘使他们喜悦。

[29] It will also make teachers either of the art of grammar or of oratory, or interpreters and teachers of philosophical writings, and men who handle all the duties of trade with easy method, receiving and rendering faithful dealing alike. They will indeed be careful in every business, useful, and men who gather means of substance by their own strength, heads of households removed from every pleasure of luxury, just, keeping to themselves and separated from the din of public life, and men who look up to all religions and to the gods with a certain trembling awe.

〔二十九〕它还会造就文法或演说术的教师，或哲学典籍的解释者与教师，以及以简便方法经办一切贸易职务、收受与交付同样诚信的人。他们当然会在每件事上谨慎、有用，凭自己的力量积聚资财，做远离一切奢侈享乐的家长，公正，自守而远离公共生活的喧嚣，以某种战栗的敬畏仰望一切宗教与众神。

[30] But if it has occupied the place of defects and illness and is constricted by the threatening aspect of the malefic stars, it decrees defects from the humors; and if the Moon is badly placed, it makes men either spastic or lunatic or epileptic, and death is always brought upon them either from waters or from the humors.

〔三十〕但倘若它占住了缺损与疾病之宫，又被凶星威胁的相位束缚，就判定来自体液的缺损；而倘若月亮落位不好，就使人患痉挛、或月狂病、或癫痫，死亡总由水或体液带给他们。

[31] We must know, then, as we stated above, that the Sun and the Moon never receive the lordship of the nativity. But when they are placed with the lords of the nativity, or joined with them by a favorable aspect, or placed in the terms of the lord of the nativity, or situated in their houses and looking upon its place with prosperous aspects, they decree very much communicated from their own nature; and although another is lord of the nativity, very much is conferred on it by the Sun and the Moon through the favorable aspect of association. What, then, the Sun decrees with the lord of the nativity, in an equal power of association, I shall briefly explain; for how great a span of time each decrees we have stated specifically in the book of instruction.

〔三十一〕所以，如我们上面所述，我们必须知道，太阳和月亮从不接受本命之主位。但当它们与本命之主同在，或以有利的相位与之相结，或落在本命之主的界里，或位于其庙中，以顺遂的相位看着它的位置，它们就判定从自身本性中分享出来的很多东西；即使本命之主另有其星，太阳和月亮也通过有利的结伴相位授予它很多东西。那么太阳以同等的结伴之力与本命之主一起判定什么，我将简要说明；因为各自判定多长的时限，我们已在《入门之书》里专门说过。

[32] The Sun with the lord of the nativity. If the Sun is joined with the lord of the nativity by this aspect we have mentioned, then, besides the other things that the lord of the nativity gives, these too are conferred by the Sun according to the powers of its nature. It makes men full of good faith, but lifted high by a swollen spirit of pride, wise, and composing all things with the spirit of fairness and moderation [text uncertain], humane, religious, and always honoring their fathers with undiminished love. It also makes them tall and comely in body, but men whose head shines with golden locks of hair; it also makes cultivators of fields, seeking their patrimonies by their own virtue, effective, sagacious, and always rejoicing in the delight of watery regions.

〔三十二〕太阳与本命之主。倘若太阳以我们所说的这种相位与本命之主相结，那么除了本命之主所给的其余东西之外，太阳也依其本性的力量授予这些：它使人充满诚信，却被膨胀的傲气抬高，有智慧，以公平与节制的精神安排一切〔原文疑有讹误〕，仁厚，虔敬，总以完好的爱敬奉父亲。它还使人身材高、相貌端好，但头上闪着金黄的头发；它还造就耕种田地的人，凭自己的德行谋求祖产，能干，机敏，总以多水地方的乐趣为乐。

[33] It also makes men who carry out all their actions with the greatest honor; but they will be separated from the affection of wife and children. It decrees defects and illnesses about the eyes and the other parts of the body, and frequently causes them to be burned by fire. It decrees violent and public ends of death in foreign places. The Sun increases the time of life if, well placed, it holds the terms of the lord of the nativity, and if the ray of the malefic stars has not impeded it.

〔三十三〕它还使人以极大的荣誉完成一切作为；但他们会与妻子儿女的情意疏离。它判定眼睛与身体其余部位的缺损与疾病，并常使人被火烧伤。它判定在异乡横死与公开处决的结局。倘若太阳落位良好，占住本命之主的界，又没有凶星的光线妨碍它，就会增加寿命的时限。

[34] The Moon with the lord of the nativity. If the Moon is joined with the lord of the nativity by this aspect we have mentioned, then, besides the other things that the lord of the nativity gives, these too are conferred by the Moon according to the powers of its nature. It makes men steady, honored, orderly, honorable, great in body, though it decrees the body according to the quality of the sign, stout, but adorned with a comely beauty of body, taking much food, delighting in little drink; but their life too always changes in an uneven way, so that their patrimony is both continually increased and again diminished by continual loss. It also makes them dwell continually in watery places.

〔三十四〕月亮与本命之主。倘若月亮以我们所说的这种相位与本命之主相结，那么除了本命之主所给的其余东西之外，月亮也依其本性的力量授予这些：它使人稳重、受尊重、有条理、可敬、身材高大，不过它依星座的性质判定身体，壮实，却以端好的身体之美为饰，吃得多，喜好少饮；但他们的生活也总是起伏不定地变化，以致他们的祖产既不断增加，又因不断的损失而减少。它还使人长住在多水之地。

[35] It always makes their affections inclined toward wives, children, and mothers, and will cause them to be separated from the affection of their fathers. But if a malefic star has cast its rays on the Moon, it will always cause defects about the eyes; for it either disfigures the eyes with a wound or assails the sharpness of sight with the dark cloud of cataract. It makes their body marked with a variety of white spots, or always inflicts the malignant sores of leprosy, or deforms the body with continual contraction, or weakens these same men with the infirmity of a trembling body, or decrees an evil end of death from a pestilence formed of malignant humors. But the testimony of the benefic stars softens these things.

〔三十五〕它总使他们的情意倾向妻子、儿女与母亲，并会使他们与父亲的情意疏离。但倘若一颗凶星向月亮投射光线，就总会造成眼睛的缺损；因为它或以创伤毁坏眼睛，或以白内障的黑云侵袭视力的锐利。它使人的身体布满种种白斑，或总施加麻风的恶疮，或以不断的挛缩使身体变形，或以身体颤抖的虚弱削弱这些人，或判定由恶性体液形成的瘟疫之恶死。但吉星的见证会缓和这些。

[36] When, then, the lord of the nativity has been found from the course of the Moon, we ought not to regard it alone in isolation, but to shape our view of it from all the temperings of the planets. For when one is with another, or when it offers its testimony, it either increases or diminishes everything according to its nature; and the lord of the nativity, equipped with the aspects of others, and borrowing the licence of its decree from each of the planets that have borne testimony to it and from the power of the place and the sign, composes its efficacy from the aspect of others.

〔三十六〕所以，当本命之主从月亮的运行中找出来之后，我们不应当孤立地单看它，而应当从诸行星的一切调和中形成对它的看法。因为当一颗星与另一颗同在，或提供见证时，它就依自己的本性增加或减少一切；本命之主装备着别星的相位，从每一颗为它作见证的行星、从宫位与星座的力量中借得论断的许可，以别星的相位组成自己的效力。

[37] If, then, it is malignant, it is softened by the prosperous aspects of the benefic stars, and the whole wickedness of its malice is changed, and, although it is ready to do harm, it is in some way tinged with grace by the testimony of the good stars, especially if it is met by the aspect of all the benefic stars; and a malefic star is also softened by sign and by place.

〔三十七〕所以，倘若它是凶恶的，就被吉星顺遂的相位软化，它恶意的全部邪恶都被改变，虽然它准备加害，却因好星的见证在某种程度上染上了恩宠，尤其是倘若所有吉星的相位都与它相遇；凶星也被星座与宫位软化。

[38] If, then, there are several planets in which there is saving support, it too takes on the likeness of a saving will and assumes the wish to decree better things, if through association with the good stars it has changed its will to harm. Then misfortunes and grave mischances are corrected in turn by prosperous events; then those who are accused and placed in grave perils are freed either by the sentences of judges or by the indulgences of the emperors; then the god heals sicknesses, and all evils are checked in the very onsets of misfortune.

〔三十八〕所以，倘若有几颗行星带着拯救的扶持，它也会取得拯救之意的样子，生出判定更好之事的愿望，倘若通过与好星的结伴，它改变了加害的意志。那时不幸与严重的遭遇会轮流被顺遂之事纠正；那时被控告、陷于严重危险的人，或因法官的判决、或因皇帝的宽赦而得释放；那时神治愈疾病，一切恶都在不幸的初起之时就被遏止。

[39] But if a malefic star alone has obtained the licence of ruling, it rages against the man with bitter persistence and exercises the strength of its licence with the command of great necessity. So too, conversely, the benefic stars, if they are not impeded by the threatening rays of the malefic stars, decree all the ornaments of good fortune and of all dignities; but if the hostile ray of the malefic stars has assailed them, they can decree nothing of the good fortune they promised.

〔三十九〕但倘若一颗凶星独自取得了统治的许可，它就以苦涩的执着向人肆虐，以极大必然性的号令行使其许可之力。同样，反过来，吉星倘若不被凶星威胁的光线妨碍，就判定好运与一切尊位的一切饰物；但倘若凶星的敌意光线攻击它们，它们所许诺的好运就一样也判定不了。

[40] So we ought always to inspect carefully all mixtures and aspects; for otherwise the substance of the whole of fate cannot be explained, unless all these things have been gathered by careful inquiry. This too we ought to gather by careful reasoning, both when a benefic and when a malefic has obtained the lordship of the nativity: whether it is placed in favorable places of the nativity or in idle and cast-down ones, and whether it is situated in its own house or in its exaltations; for from all these things, when all have been put together by careful comparison, and when you have gathered everything from the nature of the stars and signs and from the powers of the places or angles, and also from the licence of the diurnal and nocturnal conditions, you will be able to explain this whole place with the truest and most certain pronouncements; and this place contains the whole sum of the nativity, showing the end of life and the whole substance of the decree.

〔四十〕所以我们应当总是仔细察看一切混合与相位；因为否则，除非这一切都经细致的探究汇集起来，整个命运的实质就无法解释。无论吉星还是凶星取得本命之主位，我们也应当以细致的道理汇集：它是落在本命的吉利宫位还是闲置低陷的宫位，是位于自己的庙还是自己的旺；因为从这一切，当一切都经细致的比较合在一起，当你从星辰与星座的本性、从宫位或四角的力量、还有从昼夜状态的许可中汇集了一切，你就能以最真实、最确定的宣示解释这整个宫位；而这一宫包含本命的全部总和，显示生命的终点与论断的全部实质。
