VII. The Moon to Mercury.
[1] If the Moon is moving toward Mercury and joins itself to it by the aspect of its course, and is full of light, it will make the natives sagacious, talented, orators shining with the highest distinction of eloquence, especially if Mercury, placed in favorable places of the nativity, is found in its own signs or in its own degrees, and Jupiter has aspected it with a trine aspect; for then the greatest insignia are conferred on them by merit of their learning and the splendor of their eloquence. For these men restrain by the power of their eloquence the fickle minds of the people, stirred up by turbulent seditions, and by the freedom of their speech they can soothe raging minds stirred up by the indignation of desperate fury; they will know calculation, they will know music, they will always practise wrestling, and they come to know the secrets of heavenly and divine discussions, and on these grounds a substance of glory and the greatest preeminence are decreed for them.
[2] But if the Moon is moving toward Mercury so placed, with such a testimony of Jupiter, it will always cause them to be put in charge of the accounts of the treasury or of the people, or at any rate renders them such men as are entrusted with deposits, even by foreign nations; it will also cause the handling of money to be entrusted to them in continual dealings.
[3] But if the Moon, waning, is moving toward Mercury, it will make men malignant, malicious, wicked, unstable in their desires, wavering in error, who always hold all their plans in suspense through erratic doubt of manifold kinds, who change their actions by continual alteration, who deny the things entrusted to them or long to make public what is hidden, and who betray by public denunciation the counsels committed to them; impostors, always deceiving with malicious desire, or men who share a guilty knowledge with housebreakers or with thieves, or else they will themselves be thieves or housebreakers; they will indeed be weak in body, languid, defective, and such as illness, brought on by malignant humors, always enfeebles.

VIII. If the Moon Is Moving toward No Planet.
[1] But if the Moon is so placed that it is moving toward no planet, and does not join itself to any star by its own aspect, and no benefic star occupies the angles, it will make men poor, abject, destitute of all necessities, denied the supports of daily life, always wanting the help of others to sustain life, and enduring the straits of poverty by wretched begging; they will be infinitely inferior to their parents, and their body will be weak, languid, and wasted by continual emaciation.
They will be assailed by malignant humors and worn down by the continual swelling of sores; and in them a malignant humor beneath the skin always binds the joints with stony concretions, especially if the Moon, running through the void, which the Greeks call cenodromos, is struck by Saturn or Mars with a square or opposite aspect, or if, running through the void on the third day after birth, it has been struck by Mars or Saturn with the same aspect we have mentioned, or if the malefics are placed in the angles.
[2] But if, running in this way, that is, through the void, it has been met by the aspect of benefic stars, it will always make them empty-handed and destitute in early life, but it causes them to be worn down by continual labors and shakes them with continual occasions of misery, as they seek their support with the greatest sweat and the greatest toil; and when it has brought them close to good fortune, it makes them slip down again from the highest step in a falling ruin, and at times, though they have been brought to the very summit, it does not allow them to grasp full good fortune. For directing its course through empty signs, it causes the first part of life to be entangled in wretched and various mischances of misfortune. But when it has shaken mind and body with a heavy succession of misfortunes, has broken their youth with many dangers, and dragged them hither and thither in wretched wandering abroad, then it decrees the increase of many goods and of the greatest good fortune, so that as much as was taken from the first part of life by misfortunes is conferred in good fortune on the later.
[3] But if, running through the void, it afterwards joins itself to Saturn or to Mars, it will make men unfortunate, lunatic, epileptic, and such as are weighed down from their first years to their last by every kind of misfortune; it will make them poor, wretched, destitute, men whose body is naked but for badly hanging rags, guardians of tombs, or men shut up in the penalty of perpetual imprisonment.

[1] Now that the conjunctions of the Moon have been explained and shown with careful indication, let our discourse pass over to another interpretation, namely of the Moon itself, lest anything seem to have been passed over by us in such subtle discussions, especially since the whole substance of life is gathered from the courses of this deity.

[2] If the Moon, flowing away from Saturn, has joined itself to the star of Jupiter or is moving toward Jupiter, and is waxing when joined to this association, it will make men wealthy, rich, abundantly supplied, famous, noble, set over great peoples or great cities; to some it grants the greatest inheritances, to others treasures, to others the greatest gifts.
[3] But if it is diminished in light, it decrees nothing of the kind, but makes stewards, curators, or men entrusted with the guardianship of private affairs, and men who busy themselves with trade abroad; or it renders them pilots or shipmasters or contractors of public revenues, and men whose activities exercise the right of contracting in matters connected with water, so that from these occupations a small substance is conferred on them.

The Moon from Saturn to Mars.
[4] If the Moon, flowing away from Saturn, joins itself to Mars when full of light, it decrees illnesses and defects and makes them perish in early youth; but if it is diminished in light, it decrees for the mother the torments of a long and very severe sickness and causes her to be bound by certain defects, and the peril of an evil death is also brought upon this same mother, so that she perishes by continually vomiting blood; and those who are born it causes to be worn down by the languors of wretched bereavement, or their parents to be divided by perpetual discord.
[5] It also squanders both the father's and the mother's substance by various depredations, inflicts on them continual wounds of iron, and decrees such sicknesses that, for the sake of a cure, the remedy of burning with cauteries is applied to them; it also causes continual pains of the hidden parts, or makes them fulfil the gift of life sunk in the toil of a long sickness, or makes them die a violent death in various ways; for they perish either drowned in running waters or burned, or they hang themselves with a noose, or kill themselves with the sword.
The Moon from Saturn to the Sun.
[6] If the Moon, flowing away from Saturn, is moving toward the Sun, it decrees the greatest misfortunes and the greatest calamities; for it will make men insane, lunatic, epileptic, dropsical, elephantiac; and it prolongs these misfortunes with stubborn persistence, so that the native is entangled in these snares of calamity up to the last day of his life.

The Moon from Saturn to Venus.
[7] If the Moon, flowing away from Saturn, joins itself to the star of Venus, if it is waxing in light, it will make men great, noble, and powerful, fortunate, wealthy, and rich, and of some great power, but cruel, lustful, and on this account assailed by grave infamy. But if it is diminished in light, it decrees depraved enticements of love, or causes them to be entangled in impure and unchaste lusts, or decrees shameful acts in continual succession; but none the less it makes these same men acquire and possess the greatest means of substance, men for whom both good fortune and the greatest power are procured by the support of money.
The Moon from Saturn to Mercury.
[8] If the Moon, flowing away from Saturn, has joined itself to the star of Mercury and is waxing or full of light, it makes men obscure, hidden, and silent, knowers of secret and forbidden writings, or occupied with heavenly rites, or interpreting the courses of the stars by expert calculations. It also makes men put in charge of business affairs and public teachers of the liberal arts; it makes orators shining with the splendor of eloquence, or physicians adorned by the testimony of all.
[9] But if it is diminished in light, it either impedes the sound of the voice or dulls the ears, and it also weakens the body of those who have it so with wretched exhaustion; it makes them melancholic, jaundiced, splenetic, consumptive, dropsical, phlegmatic, and it constricts the gathered fluid of the bladder in a narrow passage with the bitter trouble of pain.

[7] If the Moon, flowing away from Saturn, joins itself to the star of Venus, if it is waxing in light, it will make men great, noble, and powerful, fortunate, wealthy, and rich, and of some great power, but cruel, lustful, and on this account assailed by grave infamy.
