VII. Mercury.
[1] Mercury placed partilely in the degree of the Ascendant, in the signs in which it rejoices, in a day nativity, makes philosophers, teachers of the art of grammar, or geometers, or men who often deal with heavenly things, or who aim at being able to behold the presence of the gods, or men skilled in sacred writings; it also frequently makes orators and advocates, especially if it has been found in this place either in its own signs or in the other vocal signs.
[2] But if the Sun or Saturn or Jupiter has aspected Mercury so placed in a day nativity, it will make great men, who are crowned with sacred and glorious garlands; it also makes men such that the greatest affairs of emperors are entrusted to them. But if Mars has aspected Mercury so placed from a square or from opposition, or has been found with it partilely in the Ascendant, it lays low the one who has been so born with a manifold succession of evils: for the evils that come from this conjunction of Mercury and Mars cannot be defined or described. But if Mars has aspected Mercury so placed from a trine, it makes the man occupied in good and prosperous actions.
[3] But if Mercury has been found so, partilely, in the Ascendant in a night nativity, it makes men divine in their perceptions, who always attain everything they wish by the easiest means; it will also render them honorable and grave in character, and it makes them overseers of accounts, either of contracts, or of documents, or of taxes, or of trading, or men who handle the business of banking tables and moneylending. Placed so by night, it will also frequently render interpreters of emperors or of very powerful judges; but it decrees all these things according to the difference and quality of the signs.

VII.

[4] Mercury placed in the second place from the Ascendant, if it has been found in morning rising, will make men obscure, of wicked mind, strangers to the knowledge of letters, and such a man as is destitute of every support of life. But if it is an evening star in this place and the nativity is by night, it will make moneylenders, traders, or men who undertake the care and management of others' affairs. But if it has been found so in a day nativity, it makes philologists or men skilled in laborious writings, and men who are unwilling to compare their own nature with that of other men; for they will lay claim to everything that no instruction from a teacher has handed down to them; it certainly makes them wretched in life, and men who always wear themselves out with various kinds of straits.
[5] But if Jupiter has aspected Mercury so placed by some aspect, or if it has been found with it, and the Moon has associated itself with them by a good conjunction, it causes them to be set over great and famous places, but men who do not hold the chief power, but in that very office are subject to another's power. It also makes overseers of great accounts, and renders men such as sustain the royal resources by their management and have all the royal revenues and treasures entrusted to their good faith and management; but this good fortune of theirs will end within a short space of time.
[6] Mercury placed in the third place from the Ascendant will make priests, magi, chief physicians, astrologers, and men who find out and learn by themselves whatever has not been handed down to them by another's teaching; and it makes them sagacious, fortunate, and men who apply themselves to all actions with easy skill. But if Jupiter has aspected Mercury so placed from a trine or from a sextile, or if it has been found with it, it will make men of great mind, men of great and divine counsels. But if, with Mercury and Jupiter so placed, Mars has bound itself to them by some aspects, it will make procurators of kings, famous generals, powerful administrators, and men to whom the substance of the royal resources is entrusted, and they render them such in mind and strength that they can overcome everything by the virtue and good fortune of their mind.
[7] Mercury placed in the fourth place from the Ascendant, in the lower Midheaven, will make men sharp-witted, overseers of public accounts, and men strong in manifold learning. But if it has been found in this place in morning rising, it renders teachers of certain secret arts. But if, with Mercury so placed, Mars and Saturn have occupied the other angles of the nativity and have aspected Mercury either from a square or from opposition, they will bring accusations, imprisonment in custody, and frequently condemnations. But if it has been found as an evening star in the fourth place from the Ascendant, that is, in the lower Midheaven, it will make goldsmiths, or gold miners, or teachers of certain hidden arts, or men who appear well instructed in reckoning or calculation, or it will produce leaders and overseers of men of the wrestling schools.

[7] Mercury placed in the fourth place from the Ascendant, in the lower Midheaven, will make men sharp-witted, overseers of public accounts, and men strong in manifold learning.

[8] Mercury placed in the fifth place from the Ascendant, if it has been found in morning rising, will make hiders of gold and riches, and men who by their foresight build up the greatest wealth of substance, or it makes them overseers of money that belongs to others, but great sums, and men who appear to be of divine character. And with Mercury so placed the greatest substance of livelihood is decreed for them, and they will have a fruitful offspring of children.
[9] But if it has been found as an evening star in this place, the native will be able to keep money by no means, but it will cause everything that has been stored up of money, or of gold and silver and other movable goods, to be squandered in lavish expenditures. It certainly makes men busy in affairs and placed over public accounts in some administration or other. At times, according to the quality of the signs, it makes teachers, or geometers, or astrologers, and men who find out the course of the stars by skill in computation; it also makes overseers of the wrestling schools and their leaders.
[10] But if Mercury placed in this place has received the conjunction of the waxing Moon, it makes the whole body of the man mottled with white spots, or will entangle him in defective states of health, according to the nature and quality of the signs. But if, with Mercury so placed, the waning Moon has joined itself to it, it will entangle the man in shameful ailments, and will frequently make him stray from the right order of living through perverse fits of madness.
[11] Mercury placed in the sixth place from the Ascendant will cause the native to acquire for himself the greatest fortune, either from the learned facility of his speech, or from advocacy, or from trade, or from the revenues of the gods, especially if, with Mercury so placed, another planet has been found in the tenth sign from the Ascendant.
[12] But if in a night nativity it has been found as a morning star in the sixth place, it makes interpreters, fishermen, fowlers, sculptors, if, with Mercury so placed, another planet has been found in the tenth place of the nativity. But if in a night nativity it has been placed as a morning star in the sixth place, and the tenth place from the Ascendant has no planet, it makes men malignant, malicious, authors of evil counsels, thieves, and men who covet the property of others with an envious burning of mind, who rejoice at the misfortunes of others, informers, men who pursue all their relatives by marriage and their kinsmen with bitter hatred, sluggish and blind in mind, and men on whom every kind of malice is bestowed.
[13] But if it has been found as an evening star in this place, it will make men sagacious, grave, secretive, overseers of accounts, or of banking tables, or of granaries, or of storehouses, or of documents, or of trading, from which occasions great gains are conferred on them. But if, so placed, it has received the conjunction of the approaching Moon, it will make scribes either of judges, or of authorities, or of the senate, or men who, placed with emperors, have some power of teaching, or who are ordered to govern the affairs of their prince by their own management, especially if, with Mercury so placed, the Moon or any other planet occupies the 10th place of the nativity.

[14] Mercury placed in the seventh place from the Ascendant, that is, in the Descendant, if it has been found in a day nativity, will cause those who have Mercury so to be entangled in grave vices and to burn with the desires of wretched lusts; and they will be excessive lovers either of boys or of maidens, but these men are allotted debauched women as wives, and frequently they undertake the care and protection of infamous men. But this too is decreed according to the quality of the signs; for if it has been found in this place in those signs in which it does not rejoice, that is, in the house of Mars or in the house of Saturn, or in the others in which it is depressed, it will make overseers of harlots, and pimps, and men who are befouled with the filth of this infamy. But if Mars has been found in opposition, or in the Midheaven, or placed with Mercury in the Descendant, that is, in the seventh place, it will make a life of short duration, and makes men consumptive, fugitives, exiles, and condemned.
[15] But if it has been found by night in the seventh place of the nativity, that is, in the Descendant, it will make stewards of rich women, and men on whom the greatest good fortune is conferred through occasions of love; and it renders inventors of reckoning, or of music, or of shorthand, or of difficult writings. I know that Mercury in this place has often made pebble-jugglers.
[16] Mercury placed in the eighth place from the Ascendant, if it has been found in this place by day as an evening star, will make men slow, who neither dare nor wish to do anything, always hindered by laborious actions, foolishly malicious, and useful for no actions. But if, placed in this place, it is in the house of Saturn or in the degrees of Saturn, it will make men deaf, especially if Saturn has aspected it so placed by some aspect.
[17] But if it has been found in this place by night as an evening star, it will make heirs to another's patrimony, and men who by chance find hidden wealth; they will also be fortunate and blessed alike, yet afflicted with defects, and men who are easily worn down by continual illnesses. But placed in this place as a morning star, it will cause those who are so born to increase their money without end, and to strive after great undertakings; and others it will make faithful and steadfast keepers of anxious charges, of deposits, or of business, or of documents, or frequently heirs to another's patrimony.

[18] Mercury placed in the ninth place from the Ascendant, if it has been found in this place without the aspect of any planet, will make men contentious, contradictors, dialecticians, professing to know whatever has been imparted to them by no teaching, malicious, but men who can accomplish nothing by effective thought.
[19] But if it has been found in this place as a morning star, it will make priests, diviners, haruspices, augurs, astrologers, students of the stars, physicians, and men who seek the supports of life from these arts and pursuits. But these things will be stronger if it has been protected by the aspect of the benefic planets; for it will make men fortunate, blessed, great, powerful, and men on whom all the insignia of good fortune are conferred. But if the malefic planets have aspected Mercury so placed, or if they have been found in opposition or in square, it will make men irreligious, sacrilegious, robbers of temples, condemned and deserving condemnation, and men who always wander as fugitives in foreign places, or who are oppressed by sentences of exile.
[20] But Mercury placed in this place as an evening star will make priests, magi, physicians, craftsmen, and men who acquire the supports of life from these arts, and men of such talent that they learn by themselves whatever the instruction of a teacher has not handed down to them.
[21] Mercury placed in the tenth place from the Ascendant, that is, in the Midheaven, if it is a morning star in this place, renders men admirable and great in their actions. For if Jupiter has aspected Mercury so placed from some side, from a trine or from a sextile, in a day nativity, they will be great and powerful, handling the affairs of the greatest cities, or of emperors, or of powerful men, faithful, benevolent, wise, and grave. But in a night nativity, if Venus has aspected Mercury so placed by some aspect, it will do the things which we have shown that it does in a day nativity with Jupiter. But if Mars has aspected Mercury so placed from some side, that is, from a square or from opposition, promotions that are coming are driven away by various kinds of offenses; and on this account they will frequently be exiles, or bear the burdens of some condemnation. And if the Moon too has joined itself to Mars by some aspect, they will also make them die a violent death.
[22] But placed as an evening star in the 10th place from the Ascendant, it will cause travels abroad and continual changes of place, and it also causes them to be made public in all their actions. But if Saturn has aspected Mercury so placed from some side, either from opposition or from a square, it will make them always occupied in watery business, and it places their occupations either near the sea, or near a river, or near pools; and it decrees defects and ailments always from an abundance of humors.

[23] Mercury placed in the eleventh place from the Ascendant will make men talented, indispensable in all actions, and men to whom the handling of great accounts is entrusted; but it decrees greater offices then, if it has been joined to Jupiter by a favorable aspect.
[24] Mercury placed in the twelfth place from the Ascendant will make men talented; if it is a morning star, it places them in great business affairs, or makes them contractors of public business, so that in those affairs in which others run into danger, they themselves have prosperous outcomes. But placed in this place as an evening star, it will make men who stir up many affairs and devise many affairs. For it was not without cause that the wisest men marked this place, nor without cause that they placed childbirth, or the time of a woman in labor, in this place; for the mother who is about to bring forth offspring is placed in this place.
[25] For the sixth place too is related to the twelfth, so that all the other planets placed in these places have sluggish actions; but Mercury found in this place will make learned grammarians, orators, geometers, teachers, men who sell their speeches and pleadings in continual traffic, or who are accustomed by the protection of their speech to come to the aid of men in trouble, defending them and freeing them from dangers; for they will be such that they appear more sagacious than all, and men on whom increases in all learning are conferred. But it does this when it has either been joined to Jupiter or struck by no aspect of the malefics.
[26] But if Mars has aspected it either from opposition or from a square, or is together with it, it will make informers, secretive, crafty, malicious, and evil-doing men. It will also make sorcerers, poisoners, or men who carry out forgeries by the craft of malice, so that on account of the malice of these crimes they incur grave condemnations; for they will be condemned either as sorcerers or as forgers; and it will make them forge either tablets, or deeds, or public records, or will make them, condemned on this account, perish by evil deaths. It will also bring the greatest condemnations and the greatest dangers either from slaves or on account of slaves.
[27] But if, with Mercury and Mars so placed, the Moon, waxing in light, has joined itself to them, it will make them die a violent death, but men who are struck down by the punishment of a judge. And if the Sun too has been found with them without the testimony of Jupiter, it will cause them to be burned up in flames. But all these things are decreed according to the quality of the signs.
[28] But since we have said that Mercury joins itself to all the planets with easy readiness and is good with the good and evil with the evil, we ought to explain what it decrees in nativities in association with each of them. By day, placed with Jupiter and the Sun in favorable places of the nativity, it decrees the greatest good fortune; but if by day it has been found with Mars, it will cause the calamities of the greatest misfortunes. But by night it is changed in a like manner; for with Venus and the Moon and Mars it is good, but with the Sun it decrees the greatest evils and misfortunes. In order to teach this more clearly, we ought to explain everything specifically. But first inquire carefully into the dodecatemory of Mercury and the terms of the dodecatemory, so that you may arrive at all the secrets of the nativity.
