IV. Mars.

[1] Mars placed partilely in the degrees of the Ascendant in a night nativity and in masculine signs will make soldiers; but if, as a morning star, it is placed partilely in the Ascendant without the aspect of Jupiter, it will make the natives swarthy, taller than others, and wishing to give away more than the substance of their patrimony allows, so that they seem prodigal, but men whose actions are always made public in every way.

[2] But if by night the Ascendant is placed in a domicile of Mars, in a masculine sign of course, and Mars is found in the same sign, that is, in the Ascendant, and Jupiter is with it partilely in the same sign or aspects it with a solid aspect, it will make commanders in war, men to whom an entire army is entrusted, masters of death and life, whose arrival cities or the greatest provinces always dread, fortunate, strong, stern, and men whose anger always breaks out in great fits of indignation. But so placed it does not allow them to love either wife or children with tender affection.

[3] But if it is found partilely in the Ascendant by day, it makes the natives hot-tempered, bold, raging, wanderers in foreign lands, always unstable in everything, men who will by no means be able to complete whatever they have dared, but whatever they have obtained always slips through their hands; and the patrimonies of those who have Mars so are squandered. They also lose the whole substance of their livelihood, and their wives and children as well, nor is anything of the father's substance kept for them, and these things too perish in early life.

[4] But if by day Jupiter, itself placed in its own domicile, or in its exaltation, or in its own terms, aspects Mars so placed with a trine aspect, or if it is with it partilely, its evils are softened in every respect. And I myself know, as I have found in very many nativities, that many who had Mars placed in the Ascendant, though sent into exile, administered the state well and vigorously.

IV.

[5] Mars placed in the second place from the Ascendant, if it is found in this place by day, decrees the greatest evils and great misfortunes, especially if it is placed in a morning rising; for it will make the natives estranged from their parents and from their home and always wandering in foreign lands. But if, with Mars so placed, the waxing Moon is either with it or placed in opposition, or if it joins itself by a square aspect, it will make them slow, disabled, and men who frequently receive wounds from iron; and it will disable them, wounded by cold or by a four-footed beast.

Some it causes to be exposed at birth; others it makes often captives, or dragged from free birth into slavery; and they will always be in agitation of mind and placed in the greatest straits. But if, with Mars so placed, Jupiter joins itself to it by a good aspect, being itself placed either in its own house or in its own terms, they escape from all dangers and are freed or ransomed from captivity and carried back again from slavery to freedom; but at times they will not have the necessities of life.

[6] But if it is found so by night, it makes soldiers or athletes, but it is also wont to ensnare them easily with a succession of dangers. And they undergo dangers in the same way, if Jupiter and Venus, as we said above, join themselves to it by a good aspect.

[7] Mars placed in the third place from the Ascendant decrees glory indeed, but with the greatest toil. The one who has Mars so will covet the property of others, will envy everyone, and will have the guilty conscience of some very great crime. But if, with Mars so placed, Jupiter is found in the eleventh place of the nativity or in the seventh, that is, the Descendant, it causes the native, placed in public administrations, to obtain with great toil, but to obtain, the greatest resources of patrimony.

[8] And so placed in the third place from the Ascendant, if it joins itself to Jupiter in the way we said before, it grants the government and dominion of the greatest power and honor, so that all who are joined to the native by family are surpassed by the distinction of his honor. For if, placed in this place, it is in its own house, or in its own degrees, or in its domiciles, or in its exaltation, and Jupiter is joined to it in the way we said before, it will make governors of the river frontiers, generals, vicars, praetorian prefects, and men to whom command is frequently entrusted.

[9] Mars placed partilely in the fourth place from the Ascendant, that is, in the lower Midheaven, if it is there by night, will make soldiers, men of toil who always dwell in desert regions, or overseers and trainers of wild beasts; at times it will make overthrowers of emperors or of judges according to the quality of the signs, and it will destroy the life and the patrimony of the parents. It will give wounds, widowhood, ruin, and it will give either one son or none; for the one who has it so is always hindered in all his actions.

[10] But if it is found so by day, it will weaken the whole body, will make the natives sickly, epileptic, and men who frequently receive wounds from iron; it will render them feeble, always assailed by women and always worn down by women with great vexations. It will also make them give without receiving thanks for what they have given; for whoever has obtained anything from them always proves ungrateful to them.

[11] But if the Sun aspects Mars so placed from square or from opposition, or is with it, it decrees these evils stronger and more frequent; for it frequently sets the natives in the greatest dangers. It will also make them insane and lunatic if, with Mars so placed, the Ascendant is found in a house of Mars, or if the place of Fortune is found in a place or house of Mars, or if the place of Desire or of the Daemon is placed in a house of Mars.

幸运之宫the place of Fortune即福点所在之宫
欲望之宫the place of Desire论欲求之点
神灵之宫the place of the Daemon即神灵点

[12] Mars placed in the fifth place from the Ascendant, if it is in this place by night, and if it is placed in its own house, or in the house of Jupiter, or in its own terms or the terms of Jupiter, or in its exaltation, and if Jupiter is with it or, itself placed in its own house, aspects it from trine, will make the greatest glory and great increases of patrimony and decrees every kind of good fortune; it also causes honors to be decreed for them by the people, and joins them in faithful friendship with powerful men or with the greatest administrators.

[13] But if, with Mars and Jupiter so placed, the Moon, waning in light, joins itself to the star of Mars by a favorable aspect, it will make very powerful and fearsome generals, to whom the greatest armies are entrusted, so that they even give judgment of life and death, and in great administrations it decrees the power of the right of the sword. But if the Moon has separated from it, and Venus is with it or aspects it from trine, it will make the natives fortunate, rich, men who obtain glory by their own efforts, and men always pleasing for the comeliness of their bodies.

[14] But if Mars is placed by day in the fifth place from the Ascendant, it will shake the native's patrimony and often changes his dwelling, and on account of the misfortunes that befall him he lingers always in foreign regions; and he will be placed in no small dangers. But if, while Mars so placed by day is decreeing these evils, Jupiter or Venus is either placed together with it or aspects it from trine or from sextile, the native will obtain the greatest gains from the hardship of living abroad and will soon be called back from abroad to his native land.

[15] But there is cause for fear whenever, so placed by day, it has the Moon with waxing light in opposition; for it imposes the greatest toils and such activities as come close to an imitation of slavery. For even if the native seems to be fortunate, his good fortune will be such that it is always subject to the power of another; for it makes assessors to the highest judges; it will bring accusations, uprisings, disturbances, losses, and sudden dangers, and makes them disabled in some part of the body; at times it brings madness and such sicknesses that, burnt up by the excessive heat of fever, they pass over into insanity. It will also bring chains, prisons, and confinement, unless Jupiter, aspecting the Moon placed in opposition to Mars, or Mars itself, has softened the miseries of these calamities.

For whenever Jupiter aspects Mars and the Moon so placed, it sets the natives in the greatest dangers, but when they have despaired of all help, Jupiter causes them to be freed by sudden help. Placed in this place by day without the testimony of Jupiter, it will also deny children.

[16] Mars placed in the sixth place from the Ascendant decrees many evils; for it will harm the children, will make life uneven, and decrees ailments, according of course to the nature of the signs; for in bent signs it causes premature death, and at times makes them lame and hunchbacked. In this place the defects of all ailments are discerned, provided, however, that the place itself is found partilely and that Mars is placed partilely in that sign.

[17] Mars placed partilely in the seventh place from the Ascendant, that is, in the Descendant, decrees the greatest evils and immense dangers. For it will make toilers, murderers and criminals, men under accusation, inventors of crimes, or torturers, or executioners, or traitors. But if, placed in the Descendant, it aspects its own house by opposition, it will not make a violent death (for Mars never overthrows its own house); but in that case it makes the native short-lived, if the Ascendant and the Moon are protected by the guard of Jupiter. But if the Ascendant is not in a house of Mars, it renders them short-lived, especially if it aspects by square or opposition the Moon placed with full light, that is, in the Ascendant or in the Midheaven.

[18] But in general Mars placed in the seventh place from the Ascendant, that is, in the Descendant, by day and by night makes a violent death according to the quality of the signs. It decrees this evil more strongly and more plainly, however, in signs not its own; for if it is found in this place, it then brings pains and lacerations of the body, and either hurls them headlong, or destroys them, or weighs them down with lasting and deadly calamities while placed in prison and in chains.

[19] In night nativities it will bring burning sorrow from all their activities, frequently inflicts wounds from iron, and causes the wounds themselves to be treated by the fiery burning of cauteries. It brings hidden and immense pains of the body, especially when it is itself the lord of the times, or has itself possessed spans of time apportioned to it by the full Moon.

[20] But if, with Mars placed in the seventh place, Saturn is placed partilely either in the Ascendant or in the Midheaven, or if the full Moon is carried toward Mars or the diminished Moon toward Saturn, they decree the misfortunes of great evils and of deadly calamity. Then accusations, then chains, then prisons, then condemnations, then capital sentences are pronounced against the native; for either he is thrown to the beasts, or cast down over precipices, or crushed by a collapse, or torn apart by plots within his household, or killed by robbers, or perishes on a ship. But these things are decreed according to the kind and quality of the signs; for placed in earthy signs it will cause them to be thrown to wild beasts; in solid signs it causes them to be crushed by a collapse or hurled down over precipices; placed in watery signs it drowns them by shipwreck; and placed in human signs it causes them to perish by the sword.

[21] But if the Sun is in opposition, or with it, or in another angle of the nativity, it causes them to be burned alive, so that, placed in this place, it destroys the man in every way by wretched calamity and a lamentable death, with savagery. And before the last day of life, the one who has Mars in the seventh place of the nativity will have occupations connected with fire, or with iron, or with some kind of violence, or with tortures, or with homicides. And Mars placed in the seventh place also persecutes most violently the place of the spouse and of the children.

[21] But if the Sun is in opposition, or with it, or in another angle of the nativity, it causes them to be burned alive, so that, placed in this place, it destroys the man in every way by wretched calamity and a lamentable death, with savagery. And Mars placed in the seventh place also persecutes most violently the place of the spouse and of the children.

[22] Mars placed in the eighth place from the Ascendant, if it is in this place by day, either denies the resources of patrimony or causes those who have a patrimony to be stripped of it by a wretched confiscation. But if it has the Sun and the Moon in opposition, it decrees blindness with the eyes put out. Placed alone in this sign, it will bring want, straits, agitation, disturbances, uprisings, and dangers.

[23] But if, with Mars so placed, the Moon is in the succedent of the Ascendant, that is, in the second place from the Ascendant, together with Mars itself of course, and Jupiter joins itself to them by no aspect and is estranged from them and does not see the Ascendant, it makes a violent death, but according to the nature and substance of the signs. For if it is placed in human signs, as we have said, the native is killed by men with the sword; and the one who has Mars so is slain, done to death by pirates or by robbers or by members of his own household, or he is struck down by the sword by the sentence of a judge, convicted of crimes of various kinds.

Frequently, however, so placed with the Moon, as we have said, without the testimony of Venus or Jupiter, it makes gladiators, but such as perish in the sight of the people by a cruel and savage death. In earthy signs it will cause them to be killed in desert places, though first thrown into turmoil by a manifold succession of dangers. In four-footed signs it will cause them to be seized by beasts and torn apart in wretched laceration. Placed with the Moon in watery signs in the manner we have described, it causes them to be drowned either in lakes or in the sea, or causes them, killed by pirates, to be lost in the waves and the billows. Placed in solid signs, it destroys them by a fall over precipices. Placed in fiery signs, it will cause them to be burned.

[24] But if it is placed by night in this sign, that is, in the eighth place from the Ascendant, it will make the natives hot-tempered and dangerous, but shrewd; and it sets those who have Mars so in public offices or in illustrious positions, but nonetheless decrees a violent or sudden death, such as apoplectics are wont to die. But if Jupiter aspects Mars so placed with any aspect, or if it is with it, these evils we have described are softened for the most part.

[25] But if Jupiter is found partilely in the Ascendant, and the Ascendant itself is in the house of Jupiter, and the star of Venus joins itself to Jupiter by a favorable aspect and has stood against Mars as it rages with the aspect we have described, all these deadly calamities are for the most part changed. For the lamentable misfortunes and the always wretched hardships decreed by Mars, both in this place and in the other places, are changed and grow mild if the onslaughts of Mars are softened by the good testimony of Venus and Jupiter.

Frequently, however, so placed with the Moon, as we have said, without the testimony of Venus or Jupiter, it makes gladiators, but such as perish in the sight of the people by a cruel and savage death.

[26] Mars placed in the ninth place from the Ascendant will be good with respect to life and glory; and if Jupiter is placed in the Ascendant when Mars is in the ninth place, it makes the natives fortunate and men who easily obtain everything. But if, with Mars placed in the ninth place by night, Jupiter is found in the degree of the Ascendant, it decrees the greatest power of administration and the right of the sword, and makes the native lead an army. Frequently, however, so placed it decrees hardships in living abroad.

[27] But if, placed in the ninth place, it is in a house of Mercury or of Venus, it makes learned and famous orators. But if it is either in its own house or in a house of Jupiter or in its exaltation, and Jupiter is not placed in the Ascendant, it will make men fearsome to the gods, who despise every kind of perjury.

And they will be fearsome to all daemons, men at whose arrival the wicked spirits of the daemons flee, and who free men so afflicted not by the force of words but by merely showing themselves; and however violent the daemon that shakes men's body and mind, whether it is of the air, or of the earth, or of the underworld, it will flee at this man's command and is terrified, with a kind of reverence, at his orders: these are the men whom the common people call exorcists. Such will be the one who has Mars in the ninth place, as we have said, that he can easily cleanse an afflicted man of every spirit of malignant daemons by the authority of his command.

[28] Mars placed in the tenth place from the Ascendant, that is, partilely in the Midheaven, in a night nativity of course, if it is found in a masculine sign, in its own domicile or in that of Jupiter (but one of the gender we have mentioned), or in its exaltation, will make the natives prone to danger indeed and often deceived in various ways, but nonetheless governors, generals, masters of life and death, tribunes fearsome to provinces and cities.

[29] But if, placed in the Midheaven by night in such a sign as we have described, it has received the conjunction of the approaching Moon, and Jupiter has occupied another angle of the nativity, and Mars itself is nonetheless placed either in its own house or in its exaltation or in its own terms, it will produce powerful generals and masters of the whole world. But if the star of Jupiter has deserted Mars so placed and does not join itself to it by any aspect and is not found in the other angles of the nativity, it will nonetheless make armed men, or commanders, or tribunes, or generals of lesser rank or of great provinces, men who, although placed in a position of lesser dignity, nevertheless have the power of the sword and of life and death.

[30] But if, with Mars placed as we have said, and Jupiter too placed, as we said before, in the other angles of the nativity, in the signs and in the degrees we have mentioned, Saturn is placed in another angle of the nativity, they will be kings and emperors, powerful, exceedingly fearsome, prone to danger, destroyers or builders of cities, but of brief life, that is, short-lived. Some also perish by an evil end; placed in foreign lands, they lose their life and their kingdom together, or die in the power of another.

[31] But if Mars is found in the Midheaven in a feminine sign [probably: in the domicile or house] [lacuna] of any planet, either its own or Jupiter's, by night of course, it will nonetheless make men shining with honor; yet placed in the Midheaven by night, in a masculine sign and in a feminine sign alike, it denies children.

[32] But if it is found in this place by day, that is, in the Midheaven, it will make men ineffective, whom it befits to be hindered in all their actions in various ways; it also decrees the greatest losses and the loss of the patrimony, and it will bring confiscations and condemnations as well. On some it imposes the burden of travel abroad, on others it lays the greatest straits, some it compels to flee, for others it decrees exile, and some it causes to perish abroad or in exile.

[33] Mars placed in the eleventh place from the Ascendant decrees many goods and grants increases of patrimony and the love of the people; it frequently gives the insignia of the greatest rank, if Jupiter aspects it, so placed with the waning Moon, by a good aspect, or is with it, or joins itself to it in trine association; for then it makes judges who have the right of the sword together with the greatest insignia of rank.

[34] Mars placed in the twelfth place from the Ascendant, if it is found in this place by day, decrees the greatest sicknesses, entangles the native in evil vices, contrives frequent plots against him by slaves, and makes him such a man as slaves always desire to harm, and through slaves it spreads manifold scandals over all his affairs. And frequently, on account of certain persons who are shut up, or placed in custody, or even condemned, it decrees agitation, anguish, anxieties, losses, and dangers. But all these things are softened if Mars so placed is found in a night nativity.

[35] And in all nativities and in all places we ought to wish that Venus and Jupiter always set themselves against Mars by some aspect from some place; for then its onslaughts grow faint on every side, when it is softened by the testimony of these planets. And we ought to wish this too, that Mars never occupy any angle of the nativity by day; for if it is found partilely by day in any angle of the nativity, it rages against the native in various ways. For with Mars placed in an angle, if Jupiter joins itself to it by day, if Mars is found by day in another angle, and Saturn has occupied another angle of the nativity, it will make the natives die a violent death or bring death upon themselves.

[36] But if, with Mars placed by day in an angle, Venus is found in another angle, it will make them worn out by the constant allurements of love affairs, or murderers of their wives, or men who bring death upon themselves. But if Mars occupies some angle of the nativity by day and Mercury is placed in another angle of the nativity, it will make them sufferers from heart disease and men condemned in one way or another. But if Mars is found by day in some angle of the nativity and the Sun is placed in another angle of the nativity, it will always cause them to be burned, in whatever way it may be.

[37] But if the Moon joins itself by a like aspect, and if the Moon is waxing in light, it will make them die a violent death and lays their mothers low by the bitter death of a violent end. But if the Moon is estranged from it, and Mars is found by day in any angle of the nativity without the conjunction of any planet, it decrees the greatest ailments, defects, sicknesses, and disabilities. And it always rejoices when it joins itself to the waning Moon and to Venus; for in the book of instruction, as you remember, we showed that these three planets, that is, Mars, the Moon, and Venus, are of one condition.

[38] But if it is placed by day in any angle of the nativity and Mercury has taken another angle of the nativity, it decrees great, immense, and measureless dangers; for whatever evil there is in human affairs, it is all decreed from this conjunction of planets. And we ought to remember this too, that Mars placed in the angles by day always denies offspring. If the place of children is found in its sign, it will itself, placed in an angle, deny children, because it is itself the lord of that place. And even if the place of children is found in another's domicile, and the lord of that sign is with Mars, or if Mars aspects it from opposition or square, it will deny children.

[39] But if by night it is itself the giver of life, it grants the greatest spans of life. If in a day nativity it is itself the giver of life, it will cause the natives to perish while placed in the first stage of life. But if another planet is the giver of life, and Mars stands against it by square or by opposition, it will take away fifteen years from the age that has been decreed for the native. But if it has the Moon placed in the middle between itself and Saturn, it disables and will cut off a part of the body according to the quality of the sign in which the Moon is found. But if it sees the waxing Moon by opposition or square, it either destroys the natives immediately or will cause them to be exposed.

[40] But so that you may gather the power of Mars more truly, inquire carefully into its dodecatemory and the terms of the dodecatemory.
