V. On the Corruption of the Moon.

[1] Then he mentioned the condition of the Moon and her corruption: while she is corrupted no one should begin a work or anything at all, but should put it off until the condition of the Moon and of her lord is sound.

[2] I shall explain her corruption to you: it is when she is eclipsed, and most severe if her eclipse is in the sign in which the Moon was at the birth of the native, or in a trine of the sign in which the Moon was when the native was born; and she harms also at the conjunction.

[3] When the Moon is under the beams of the Sun, her light effaced so that she is not seen, she is corrupted; but she is useful for one who wants to commit theft or treachery or something he keeps hidden, and for every work that is concealed or kept secret and that its doer does not want made public.

Yet even being so, she is the better for evil-doing in her eclipse, and for helping one who devises guile in his heart and acts in secret, and all that calls for silence.

[4] If it is a work whose doer wants it kept hidden, begin it while the Moon is covered under the beams of the Sun, for this is good for him; and it is worse if it is begun when the Moon is separating from the Sun and has appeared from under the beams [text uncertain].

[5] Corruption also when the dodecatemory of the Moon falls where Mars or Saturn is;

when the Moon is in the ecliptic places, at the middle of the line, descending toward the south, or at the southern limit;

and when the Moon is at the full, in opposition to the Sun, for this is bad: she must bring about strife and dissension, and it signifies the onset of a dispute, the smaller of the two belonging to the one who is overcome and defeated [text uncertain].

[6] Also when the Moon is with a malefic or a malefic regards her; when the Moon is decreasing in her numbers in longitude or in latitude; and when the Moon is in her least course, that is, when she is decreasing in her reckoning and her motion in a day and a night is less than twelve degrees, for this course of hers resembles the course of Saturn.

[7] When it is so, difficulty and slowness enter into the work that is begun at that hour.

[8] Likewise if the Moon in her course is in the path that the learned call the burnt path (the burnt path is at the middle of the line, and it is Libra and Scorpio); and when the Moon is in the last degrees of a sign, for she is then in the terms of Saturn or Mars, and none of their terms is more baneful than the terms at the ends of the signs.

[9] When the Moon is cadent from the angle of the house of authority (the Midheaven) into the ninth, falling in a cadent place, the work begun at that hour is dissolved, does not stay in one state, and reversal and trouble enter into it.

[10] Understand and consider what I have set down for you concerning the corruption of the Moon, and begin nothing while it lasts; but if a matter befalls that cannot be put off until the condition of the Moon is sound, [11] let Jupiter or Venus be in the Ascendant or in the house of authority.

[12] Look at the condition of the planets and their positions: if they fall under the beams, or go retrograde in their course, or fall in a bad, cadent place, that is, where a planet is falling from an angle, they have little power.

[13] If a malefic is with one of them in the same degree, or regards it from trine, square, or sextile, or is with it in one sign, this signifies that the work has no power.

[14] When the planets are in the signs that the learned call dark, they have no power, nor have their rays when they are so.

[5] Corruption also when the dodecatemory of the Moon falls where Mars or Saturn is;

[5] 受损还有:月亮的十二分部落在火星或土星所在之处;

when the Moon is in the ecliptic places, at the middle of the line, descending toward the south, or at the southern limit;

月亮在蚀点,即在那条线的正中向南下降之处,或在南方极限;

and when the Moon is at the full, in opposition to the Sun, for this is bad: she must bring about strife and dissension, and it signifies the onset of a dispute, the smaller of the two belonging to the one who is overcome and defeated [text uncertain].

[15] In every inception look to the description given by Valens the philosopher, and consider his words, for he used to look into matters with a subtle and exact consideration.

[16] He said: In the inception of every work look at the Sun and the Moon and at the lords of the two signs in which the luminaries are, and with that look at the Ascendant and the Midheaven.

Look at the great Sun and the swift Moon, and at the kings of the houses in which the two lights have stepped, and besides them at the Hour-marker and at the sign that touches the topmost aether, attending on the Midheaven; and see which of these places the Moon holds, and who is her lord.

[17] If someone begins a work while the Moon is in the Ascendant or the Midheaven or another of the angles, and the lord of the Moon's sign falls in a cadent place, falling away from the angle, the beginning of that work is good and its end bad, and harm and what is not desired enter into it from this.

If he is in the cadent places and she herself in the angles, in its first stages the work will appear favourable and bright, but afterwards its bound will play him false, and its end will perish.

[18] For the beginnings belong to the much-turning Moon herself, and the end to the god who rules her house: the Moon is the indicator of the root of every work, and the lord of the sign in which the Moon is, the indicator of its end.

[19] If you find the lord of the Moon in a good place and the Moon in a bad place, the beginning of that matter is bad and its end good and profitable, by God the Exalted's leave.

[20] If you find the lord of the Moon in a strong place and the Moon in a cadent place, this signifies that the beginning of the work will be difficult and slow, with no good in it, and its end good, coming to him as he desires.

[21] If the Moon and her lord fall in strong places, this signifies that both the beginning and the end of the work will turn out as he desires.

[22] If the Moon and her lord fall in cadent places, the beginning and the end of that work are alike useless.

[23] If the lord of the Moon falls in the signs that follow the angles, which are called the difficult ones, this signifies that the work begun will have delay in its beginning and slowness in its end.

[24] Look also from which planet the Moon is separating.

[25] If you find her separating from the benefics, it is good for every work that is begun, except for one who wants to flee from the ruler, or from his land, or to run away from his master; for these fare best when the Moon at that hour is separating from the malefics, and it is more likely that they will not be caught.

[26] With that look at the lord of her ninth-part (nawbahr) and at the planet to which the Moon applies; for the consideration of the beginning and the end of a matter of this kind is not right until you look for its beginning to the lord of the Lot of Fortune, and for its end to the planet to which the Moon applies.

[27] This subject has been described in the chapter in which he treats of flight and theft.

[28] He said: Look at the Moon, at the lord of the house in which she is, and at the planet to which the Moon applies, and see how you find the position of the Moon and of the planet to which she applies, and their strength in the angles, for these two are the indicators of this.

[29] If the Moon is with two malefics in one sign, pressed between them in that sign, and the benefics regard her from square, a man will be saved and escape from the calamity and trial with which he is afflicted at that hour.

[30] If the Moon falls where the lords of her triplicity are benefics, and none of the malefics is in opposition to the Moon, and the benefics and the malefics regard her from square, this signifies that he will be saved from what he has fallen into, but will fall into another calamity before he escapes from his first; then he will be saved, if God the Exalted wills.

[31] If you find the Moon in trine with the benefics and the malefics regard her from square, this signifies the same.

[32] In the inception of every matter look at the Ascendant and the Moon. [33] The Moon is strongest when she is above the earth, especially by night; and the Ascendant is strongest when the Moon is under the earth by day.

[34] This is what he mentioned at the head of his book; then for every work that people begin he set down a separate chapter, containing the power of the seven and the twelve, which of the seven and the twelve is lord of that work, and on what day and hour one should begin each work.
