The Fifth Book of Dorotheus, on Questions.

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate; my success comes only through God the Mighty.

I.

[1] This is the book of Dorotheus, king of Egypt.

[2] It is five books: he composed four of them on nativities, in which he mentioned every good and evil, hardship or ease, that befalls people from the beginning of their affairs to the end; and he composed one of them on the matter of inceptions, and that is this book, which is called the fifth book.

In it he mentioned the condition of every work that anyone begins, whether deliberately or not, what becomes of the beginning of that work, its middle, and its end, and what good or evil enters into it.

[3] He mentioned in his book that he follows the traces of the learned men who have passed away, the learned of Babylon and Egypt, for they were the first to look into the science of the stars and its reckoning, the revolution of the sphere, the courses of the seven planets, and the risings of the twelve signs; and he extracted this from their books.

Then he made a comparison for himself in following them. [4] He said that, as he looked into what they had treated and arranged of the science of the stars, he followed the best of their knowledge, the most correct, the clearest, and the most comprehensive, and extracted it from their books; and he likened himself, in following their traces and composing this book, to the bee, which seeks out the sweetest and best of the fruits and makes honey from them.

Then he began, and set down for this book a comprehensive introduction, in which he mentioned the power of the seven and the twelve, their soundness and their corruption.

The Fifth Book of Dorotheus, on Questions.

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate; my success comes only through God the Mighty.

I.

第一章

[5] He said: At the inception of every matter that anyone wishes, look at the signs of straight rising and of crooked rising, at the tropical and the bicorporeal signs, and at the place of the planet that is in the Ascendant at the inception of every work, to see whether its end will be good or bad.

[6] For you must first learn the nature of the signs of straight rising and of crooked rising.

[7] I shall explain to you which of them are straight and which are crooked.

[8] The straight ones are Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius, because each of these six rises in two hours and part of an hour of the hāwandrūz hours, that is, in more than thirty time-degrees; these are the hours in which night and day are equal, the length of each hour being fifteen degrees.

[9] The crooked ones are Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini, because each of these six rises in less than two of the hāwandrūz hours, that is, in fewer than thirty time-degrees.
