XXXVI. Chapter: On Runaways.
[1] If a slave or a slave woman runs away, or a fugitive flees, and you want to know whether he will be caught or not, look, in the matter of the runaway, at the Ascendant and the Moon; and at the Sun and the Midheaven for the condition of the one who seeks him, his master.
[2] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in a tropical sign, one of the signs in which night and day are equal, obstacles will befall the runaway, and he will not be able to get far, either by land or by sea.
[3] If the Ascendant is a bicorporeal sign, it signifies that the runaway did not flee alone: another runaway is with him, and he has firmness and endurance.
[4] If the Ascendant is a sign of crooked rising, it signifies that it is bad for the runaway: he is bewildered, has strayed from the road, or has taken to the desert, wandering on the way.
[5] If the Ascendant is a sign of straight rising, it signifies that the runaway keeps to the highway, neither straying nor becoming bewildered, until he reaches the place he wanted.
[6] If the Moon is not on the equator but in a bicorporeal sign, from the first degree until she reaches fifteen degrees of that sign, it signifies that, if the runaway has run away, this is his first flight; but he will make a habit of running away after that, and will flee again.
[7] If the Moon is in the remaining fifteen degrees of the sign, it signifies that the runaway had run away before this too.
[8] If the Moon is in the Ascendant, it signifies that the runaway has set out toward the east.
[9] If the Moon is in the Midheaven, it signifies that the runaway has set out toward the qibla, the south.
[10] If she is in the sign opposite the Ascendant, it signifies that he has set out toward the west.
[11] If the Moon is in the angle of the fathers, it signifies that the runaway has set out toward the abākhtar, the north.
[12] If the Moon is in none of the angles but in the signs between the Midheaven and the Ascendant, it signifies that the runaway has set out toward the east.
[13] If the Moon is in the signs between the Midheaven and the sign opposite the Ascendant, it signifies that the runaway has set out toward the qibla, the south.
[14] If the Moon is in the signs between the sign opposite the Ascendant and the angle of the fathers, it signifies that the runaway has set out toward the west.
[15] If the Moon is between the fourth angle and the Ascendant, the runaway has set out toward the abākhtar, the north.
In the intervening places judge proportionally: for example, in the ninth, toward the south but more to the west; in the eighth, toward the west but more to the south; and likewise in the other places.

[16] If the Moon is applying to Mars, Mars being in his station, or regards the Moon from the place in which he is stationary, by body or by ray, it signifies that the runaway has shed blood in the lands to which he came, and so has fallen into bonds, or will be taken by force and returned to his master, or will be cast into prison, or will die.
[17] If it is Saturn that regards the Moon in the way I described for the regard of Mars, it signifies that the runaway has committed a suspicious act and a trick, and has fallen into bonds on that account. If, while Mars is so configured, Saturn too regards the Moon and harms her, he will perish, plotted against secretly or openly.
[18] If Saturn is stationary and the Moon applies to him, or he, stationary, sees the Moon, it signifies that the runaway will strangle himself with his own hand.
[19] If at that hour one of the benefics regards the Moon, it signifies that this affliction will be loosed from him.
[20] If Saturn is not in his station and the Moon applies to him, receiving her, it signifies that the runaway has lost the goods that he stole when he ran away, whatever he was carrying; the runaway will be caught and brought back to his master in a bad state, or will be a prisoner abroad, and affliction and bonds will befall him in that flight of his.
[21] If the benefics are in the Ascendant, or regard the Ascendant, or are with the Moon or apply to her, it is good for the runaway: the runaway who runs away at that hour has truly and certainly been granted escape from slavery, for they either embolden him or free him entirely.
[22] The best of the benefics in this matter, for the runaway and for the thief, is Venus, when she regards the Ascendant or the Moon, or is with the Moon, or in the Ascendant; for when Venus falls in this position, the runaway who ran away at that hour will either escape and not be caught, or, if he is caught and brought back to his master, his master will be pleased with him and treat him well, and he will become more honoured than before.
[23] If the Moon is increasing, the runaway will not be overtaken or caught quickly; for, not fearing his master, he hides himself.
[24] If the Moon is decreasing, he will be caught quickly, for he can neither go far nor stay hidden long: it is fated that he be taken.
[25] If the Sun is in the sign opposite the Ascendant, and Saturn is in the sign that sets after the Sun, which is the eighth sign from the Ascendant, it signifies that the runaway's master will die before the runaway is caught.
[26] If a malefic is in the Midheaven or with the Sun, it signifies that there is no good for the one who seeks the runaway in seeking him; it is better for the master not to seek him, for he will not find him, and if he overtakes him and lays hold of him, harm and hardship will enter upon him, more than the profit.
[27] If he runs away while the Moon at that hour is in the sign opposite the Ascendant, and Mars is in the sign that sets after the opposite of the Ascendant, which is the eighth from the Ascendant, and no benefic regards her or helps her, it signifies that affliction and hardship will befall the runaway in that flight of his, and its end will be that he dies, in that direction of his, the worst of deaths.
[28] If the Moon is in the sign opposite the Ascendant, and it is not Mars that sets after her but Mercury, setting after the Moon, and Mars regards Mercury from trine, from the right and from the IC, it signifies that evil will befall the runaway in that flight, and its end, in that direction of his, will be a harsh death.
[29] If the Moon is under the beams of the Sun, without light, and Mars regards her at that hour, the runaway in that flight of his will meet his destruction by burning in fire or by iron.
[30] Look at the nature of the sign in which the Moon is, under the beams of the Sun and diminished in her light, and at the Ascendant of the inception; for that sign signifies from what cause his destruction will come, and by whom.
[31] If the nature of that sign resembles human beings, the affliction will befall him from human beings, from robbers and men generally.
[32] If the nature of that sign is that of animals that walk on four legs, that affliction will befall him from beasts.
If they are mixed, the one human in form and the other four-footed, it will be from hostile horsemen.
[33] Look at the nature of the other signs in which the Moon may be, diminished in her light.
[34] If that sign is one of the earthy signs, it signifies that a building will collapse on the runaway and he will perish, or that he will fall from a cliff.
[35] If the Moon is in the sign opposite the Ascendant, under the beams, as was said, and Saturn regards her from a moist sign, Leo being in the Ascendant, it signifies that his death will be by drowning in the depths of the water; the evil is then more certain, for the runaway will not be found but will be destroyed, nor will the lost thing be seen again.
[36] If Mercury is with Saturn in the way I described, conspiring in this affliction of the Moon, it signifies that the runaway will kill himself.
[37] If Jupiter and Venus are both in that place, or regard the Moon, they will relieve him of that affliction, by God's leave, especially if Jupiter and Venus are in their light and strength, out of the beams.
[38] If the Moon applies to Mars in longitude, Mars being not stationary but adding to his numbers, the runaway at that hour will meet with blows, whipping, torture, and imprisonment in that flight of his.
[39] If the Moon applies to Mars in latitude, or Mars is setting and the Moon in the place following the setting, and Jupiter regards Mars and the Moon, it signifies that because of the Moon's application to Mars the runaway will meet with calamity and fear and dangers in which he will come near to destruction; but he will be rescued from that destruction because Jupiter regards the Moon.
[40] If the Moon and the malefics are in one of the angles, the runaway at that hour will meet in that flight of his with a hateful death, and his hands and feet will be cut off.
And if the malefics enclose the IC, or the Midheaven, or the setting, the runaway, having become a prisoner, will die in prison.
[41] If the Moon is in the Midheaven, and Mars is in another sign on the right of the Moon and Saturn on her left, they have besieged the Moon between them and pressed her by their regard; and this indicates that the runaway at that hour will be strangled and perish.
[42] But if Mars is on the left of the Moon and Saturn on her right, besieging the Moon between them, it signifies that the runaway who ran away at that hour will be crucified and perish in that direction of his.
[43] If the Moon is in the angle of the Midheaven, or in the sign opposite the Ascendant, or in the angle of the fathers, and in the signs on the right of the Moon and on her left there is, in one of them, the Sun and, in the other, Mars, besieging the Moon between them, whichever side each may be on, the runaway who ran away at that hour will be burned alive with fire.

[44] If the lord of the sign in which the Moon is, is under the beams and does not regard the Moon, it signifies that the master of the runaway who ran away at that hour will die quickly, before the runaway is caught.
[45] If he runs away at an hour when the Ascendant and the Moon, or the lord of the sign in which the Moon is, are in a tropical sign, it signifies that the runaway, repenting, will return to his master willingly.
[46] If the Moon regards the benefics and the malefics both, whether they are in one sign or in different signs, the one who runs away at that hour will be caught and will not escape his master, especially if that malefic is in square to the Moon or in opposition to her; and most likely his capture will be when the Moon reaches, by transit, the position of that malefic.
[47] If that runaway is not caught at that time either, then whenever the Moon reaches the place in which that malefic was, hardship and affliction will befall him.
[48] If the Moon and the Ascendant are afflicted, and the benefics regard neither the Ascendant nor the Moon to help them, it signifies that it will be hard for the one who runs away at that hour to return, and if he does return, calamity and affliction will befall him: he will be in danger and harmed.
[49] If the Moon and the Ascendant are afflicted, but the benefics regard the Ascendant and the Moon, and the benefics that regard the Ascendant and the Moon are in a solid sign, and the Ascendant and the Moon are free of the regard of the malefics, that runaway has escaped and got away and will never be laid hold of.
[50] If the benefics that regard the Moon and the Ascendant are not in a solid sign but in a tropical or a bicorporeal sign, it signifies that the runaway will return of himself, repenting, or will be caught against his will, and no evil or punishment will befall him from his master for that flight of his: his master's anger will be broken, for the master will be put to shame and take pity on him.
[51] If the Sun regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it signifies that whoever runs away or steals goods at that hour, the runaway and the goods will come to light and be laid hold of; for the Sun makes all hidden things manifest.
[52] In the inceptions that show a finding, if Mars regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it signifies that he will be laid hold of quickly.
[53] If Saturn regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it signifies that he will not be laid hold of except after slowness or hardship.
[54] If Jupiter is in the sign opposite the Ascendant, it signifies that the anger of the master of the runaway of that hour will be stilled and he will forgive him: even if he is laid hold of, no reproach or evil will befall him from his master, for the master is softened.
[55] If Venus is in the sign opposite the Ascendant, showing a finding, it signifies that the runaway is in a place in which the gods are worshipped, a holy place.
[56] If the lord of the Ascendant is in the first face of the sign and regards it, it signifies that the runaway is not in the place where he was thought to be, and he has not gone to a distant place, but is nearby.
If some planet in its own house regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it signifies that no flight has taken place, but the one you think has fled is wandering somewhere nearby, and has not gone far.
[57] If there is a retrograde planet with the lord of the Ascendant, and from its position it regards its own house and the Moon, it signifies that the runaway is nearby and has not gone far; for every retrograde planet that regards the Moon and its own house says that the one sought has not fled but is wandering somewhere close by.

[51] If the Sun regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it signifies that whoever runs away or steals goods at that hour, the runaway and the goods will come to light and be laid hold of; for the Sun makes all hidden things manifest.

[58] I shall explain to you the matter of the runaway from the Ascendant and from the sign in which the Moon is, when no planet is with them and none regards them.
[59] Look: if the Ascendant is Aries, or the Moon is in Aries, when a runaway runs away at that hour, it signifies that the runaway will be laid hold of quickly and brought back, and it is most likely that he will return willingly of his own accord.
[60] But if the Moon is in Aries and the Ascendant is Leo, Sagittarius, Pisces, or Gemini, it signifies that whoever runs away at that hour, even if the one seeking him toils and wearies himself in seeking him, will not lay hold of him.
[61] If the Moon or the Ascendant is in Taurus, it signifies that the one who runs away at that hour will be laid hold of, but after toil, hardship, and slowness; for it carries the runaway to the house of a powerful man, and therefore he is found with difficulty.
[62] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in Gemini, in the first fifteen degrees, it signifies that if the one who runs away at that hour is not laid hold of within two days, he has got away and will not be caught, and has come to a distant land; but after the third month his master will see him, or news will reach his masters from him that he is alive.
[63] If the Ascendant is in the remaining fifteen degrees of Gemini, it signifies that the one who ran away at that hour will be caught quickly.
[64] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in Cancer when a runaway runs away at that hour, it signifies that, if he is not found within two days, he will be laid hold of after great slowness, hidden in a place in which the gods are worshipped.
[65] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in the first half of the sign of Leo, up to fifteen degrees, it brings the runaway back; but beyond fifteen degrees it makes him vanish and carries him off to the house of some rich and powerful man, a dwelling of great consequence, strength, protection, and honour, so that he is reached only after slowness and hardship because of that man's protection.
[66] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in Virgo, it signifies that it will be hard for the one seeking the runaway of that hour to lay hold of him, for he travels fast and does not stay in one place; because the sign is winged, it indicates that the runaway will be out of sight.
[67] If the Ascendant or the Moon is in Libra, it signifies that the runaway of that hour will be laid hold of and brought back, but making some excuse and pleading that he had good reason to flee; and he will run away again after that, because of the severity of his master's anger that he sees.
[68] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in Scorpio, it signifies that the runaway will be laid hold of quickly in a place where the gods are worshipped, a temple, and often he will return willingly of his own accord.
[69] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in Sagittarius, it makes the runaway wander in various places and makes the finding long drawn out.
[70] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in Capricorn, it signifies that if the runaway of that hour is not found within five days, he will die, and he will not be laid hold of, and it will not be known where he has gone.
[71] If the Ascendant or the Moon is in Aquarius, in the first fifteen degrees, it signifies that the runaway of that hour will be laid hold of and brought back.
[72] If the Ascendant and the Moon are in the remaining degrees of Aquarius, the runaway of that hour will not be caught, and there is no hope of laying hold of him: it makes him vanish.
[73] If the Ascendant or the Moon is in the first fifteen degrees of Pisces, it signifies that the runaway of that hour will not be overtaken: it makes him vanish.
[74] If the Ascendant or the Moon is in the remaining degrees of Pisces, the runaway of that hour will be laid hold of: it makes him manifest.
[75] If the Moon is in a bicorporeal sign, in the first half, it signifies that the runaway had not run away before and that this was his first flight.
[76] But if the Moon is in a bicorporeal sign, in the last half, it signifies that the runaway had run away before this time, and this is nothing strange for him.
[77] These are the things that the twelve signs signify by themselves, without the testimony of any planet. This chapter is obscure, because the hour at which the runaway runs away cannot be determined; so look, for the beginning of this matter, at the hour at which the news of the flight of the slave or the slave woman reaches the slave's master, and take that as the Ascendant.

Look also, in all these things, at the application of the Moon: for if a work is begun and the first application of the Moon is to the benefics and then to the malefics, it signifies that the beginning of that work is good and its end bad.
If it is contrary to this description, then judge the contrary of that — I mean that if the first application of the Moon is to the malefics and then to the benefics, the beginning of the work is bad and its end fortunate.
If a planet is in the Ascendant in the first ten degrees, it signifies that the work and the thing begun at that hour will be quick.
If the planet is in the remaining degrees of the Ascendant, it signifies that slowness and difficulty will enter into the thing begun at that hour.
If Jupiter is in the Ascendant and the Moon applies to Saturn or Mars, the work begun at that hour will be easy and smooth at its beginning, and troubled and bad at its end.
If what I have mentioned is contrary to this description, say the contrary of that.
[78] If the Moon is under the beams of the Sun, the one who runs away from his master at that hour will not be overtaken, and if he is overtaken, then after slowness.
Every beginning of a work or a thing that takes place at that hour is bad.
[79] If the Moon is with one of the malefics in one degree, in the Ascendant or in another of the places, the one who runs away at that hour will not be laid hold of, and the goods that were stolen or lost will not be recovered.
And every work or thing that is begun at that hour [text uncertain], or boarding a ship at sea, is bad, and it signifies that whoever boards the ship will meet with calamity and terror.
If it is at the conjunction or the opposition, and the malefics regard the luminaries from opposition, and Mercury is with the malefics that afflict the luminaries, it signifies that whoever boards a ship at sea at that hour, the ship will sink and destroy its people and what is in it.
[80] [lacuna] And whoever runs away at that hour will die quickly in that flight of his.
For the conjunction and the opposition kill and harm every person and every work, especially if the person's nativity fell at the conjunction or the opposition.
For Mercury, when he is with the malefics, increases the strength of the malefics in the harm and evil that come from the malefics.
