XXXV. Chapter: If You Want to Know the Matter of Something Stolen or Something Lost, Whether It Can Be Recovered or Not.
[1] Look: if at the time the goods were stolen, or lost, or strayed, or when you are asked about it, the two luminaries regard one another from trine, it signifies that the goods will be recovered quickly, without toil or hardship.
[2] But if the Sun regards the Moon from square, it signifies that the goods will be found after a long time and with hardship, and that the thieves have moved the goods from the first place in which they put them when they stole them to another place [text uncertain].
[3] If the Moon and the Sun are opposite one another, it signifies that the lost thing will be disclosed, but found only after a time and with hardship, and not easily brought back.
If the Moon is void of course (that is, when within 120 degrees she applies bodily to none of the planets), she shows a slow finding [text uncertain].
[4] If the Moon is with a planet in that planet's own house, that is, with her own ruler, it signifies that the thing is likely to be found.
[5] If the Sun, or Jupiter, regards that place and that planet, it is likely to be found.
[6] If the dodecatemory of the Moon falls in the Ascendant, or in the Midheaven, or in the sign in which the Sun is, or in the sign in which the lord of the Moon is, or in a sign in which there is a planet making its oriental phase, the goods that were stolen or lost will be found, and very nearby.
[7] If the Moon is in the terms of the sign opposite the Ascendant, or in the second from it, it signifies that it will not be found, unless the Sun testifies to her.
[8] But if at that hour the Sun regards the Moon from trine, it will be found; for God made the Sun a light, and it uncovers matters, illuminates everything dark, and brings it to light, by God's leave.
[9] If the Moon is in the place that the learned among the astrologers call the burnt path, it signifies that it will not be recovered, and if it is recovered, then after hardship and delay.
The Moon in the ecliptic nodes makes the stolen thing hard to find.
[10] If both luminaries are under the earth, it signifies that the thing stolen or lost will vanish and will not be recovered.
[11] If the Lot of Fortune is with the Sun, or the Sun regards the Lot of Fortune, it signifies that the thing lost or stolen will be recovered quickly, made manifest.
[12] If the Moon is with the Lot of Fortune or regards it, without the Sun regarding it or being with it, it signifies that the thing stolen or lost will be recovered, but with slowness and hardship.
[13] If neither of the two luminaries is with the Lot of Fortune or regards it, it signifies that the thing stolen or lost will not be recovered, and its owner should not seek it, for he will weary himself without attaining anything.
[14] If the Moon is in the Ascendant, it signifies that what was lost or stolen will be recovered quickly; for when the luminaries are in the Ascendant they signify that the thing stolen or lost will be recovered, since they have surpassing strength in that place.
The Sun and the Moon rising together disclose not only the stolen thing but also the thief.
[15] If the Moon is under the beams of the Sun and decreasing, entirely without light, it signifies that the thing stolen or lost will certainly not be recovered, for this has come about through a binding decree.
[16] If the luminaries are in the sign opposite the Ascendant, it signifies that the thing stolen or lost will not be recovered except with slowness and hardship, or a dispute, a quarrel, or fighting.
[17] If the Sun alone is in the Ascendant, what was stolen or lost will be recovered, unless the Ascendant is Aquarius, Gemini, or Libra with the Sun in it; for these three signs are opposite the signs of the Sun's triplicity.
[18] If the Sun is in one of these three signs, it is bad, and it is not likely that it will be recovered.
[19] If the Sun is in the Ascendant, and the thing stolen belongs to one whose nativity is known, then this is how to judge: if the theft or loss was at an hour when the Moon is in the sign in which a benefic was in his nativity, it signifies that the thing lost will be recovered; but if she is in a place in which a malefic was at the original fixing of the nativity, it will not be found.
If the inception shows a finding, you must also examine when it will be found, in this way.
Take the number of signs from the Ascendant to the Sun, and again the number of signs from the Ascendant to the Moon, and combine the numbers; whatever total is found from the two numbers, say that after so many days, or so many months, or so many years the lost thing will be found — and then only if a benefic testifies; if a malefic, it is no longer found.

[20] Some of the ancient learned used to examine the matter of theft from the four angles. When one of them was asked about a theft or something lost, he looked at what was stolen or lost from the Ascendant; at the Midheaven for the owner of the goods, the one from whom they were stolen and who is seeking them; at the matter of the thief from the sign opposite the Ascendant; and at the hiding-place of the thieves, where they put what they stole, from the IC.
[21] If the benefics are in the Ascendant or regard the Ascendant, they said that what was lost or stolen will be recovered and will return to its owners and to the house from which it was stolen.
From the setting sign, or the planet in it, or its ruler, or the planets that testify to it, judge the appearance and the manner of the thief.
[22] If there is a planet in the Midheaven and that sign is one of its houses, they said that the one asking about the theft is truthful and is seeking his right: it is his own possession that he seeks, not another's.
[23] If the Midheaven does not belong to the planet that is in the Midheaven, and it has no strength there, they said that the seeker claims what is not his right: he is seeking not his own possession but another's.
[24] If the IC is a bicorporeal sign, they asserted that what was stolen or lost has been put out, not with one person, but with partners, such as brothers or kinsmen.
[25] If the IC is not bicorporeal but a tropical sign, they said that what was stolen or lost has been put out with one person only, with no partners in it.
[26] If the IC is a masculine sign, they asserted that what was stolen or lost lies with a man; and if the sign is feminine, they said it lies with a woman; and likewise with the bicorporeal signs.
The setting must also be examined in the same way, whether it is masculine or feminine, bicorporeal or not.
The Sun and the Moon testifying to the place under the earth say that the lost thing lies with kinsmen.
[27] If the IC is a moist sign, they asserted that what was stolen or lost has been put near a sea, a spring, a well, a valley, a river, a channel, a lake, or a place with water.
[28] If the sign of the house of the fathers is a four-footed sign, they said that what was stolen or lost is in a sheepfold, or a shelter for animals, or a stable, or a pen.
[29] If the IC is one of the signs that resemble human beings, and Jupiter and Venus regard it, they said that what was stolen or lost is in a clean spot and a good place, pure and holy.
[30] If Jupiter and Venus do not regard that angle, and Mars regards it, they said that what was stolen or lost is in places of fire, or by the forges of smiths, or a kitchen, or the like.
[31] If Mars does not regard that sign and Saturn regards it, they said that the thieves handed what was stolen or lost to slaves, who received it from them and put it in a dark house, a filthy place, damp and foul-smelling, or in a high, filthy place [text uncertain].
[32] If Saturn regards that sign and Jupiter is in it, slaves did not receive that theft from the thieves, but one of good standing received it from them: it lies with a noble person.
[33] If Jupiter is not in that sign and Mars is in it, they said that the one who took those goods from the thieves was at first a slave and is now free: a freedman guards the stolen thing.
[34] If Mars is not in that sign and Venus is in it, from its first degree up to twenty degrees, they said that women received what was stolen from the thieves, and they are women of property and standing, free and of repute.
[35] If Venus is in the remaining ten degrees of the sign that is under the earth, they said that slave women, or women who do the work of slave women, or freedwomen, received what was lost or stolen from the thieves.
[36] If Venus is not in the IC and Mercury is in that place, in the first ten degrees of the sign, the one who took what was stolen from the thieves is a man of good birth and standing, well spoken of, rich; formerly he was poor, and today he is a man of property and means [text uncertain].
If Mercury is in the second ten degrees, it has been put out with a man who is free, but poor.
[37] If Mercury is in the remaining ten degrees of the sign, they said that the one who took the goods from the thieves is a slave, or a man who does the work of slaves, or a hireling.
[38] If the Sun regards the Lot of Fortune, they said that what was lost or stolen will be recovered quickly and easily.
[39] If it is the Moon that regards the Lot of Fortune and the Sun does not, they said that those goods will be recovered after slowness and with difficulty.
[40] If neither luminary regards the Lot of Fortune nor the Ascendant, they said that those goods will not be recovered except after hardship and toil; neither the lost possession, nor the slave, if he flees.
[41] They said that if the Moon is in square or in trine to the Sun, or in opposition to it, a slave who runs away at that hour, or goods stolen or lost at that hour, will be recovered, and the thief made manifest.
[42] If at that hour which I mentioned the Sun is in trine, square, or opposition to the Moon, and the Sun is in the Ascendant, or in the angle of the Midheaven, or with the Lot of Fortune, or regards the angles and the places, it signifies that those goods will truly be recovered. If the Sun is in trine, square, or opposition to the Ascendant, it signifies the same as when so configured to the Moon.
If the signs from the Sun show a finding while other signs suggest that it cannot be found, the stolen thing will be found later, after some delay; for the power of the Sun is the strongest, and the signs from it are the more certain.
[43] If the Moon is in the last degrees of the sign, in the third face, it signifies that what was lost or stolen at that hour will be moved from one place to another.
All that has been said about thieves must also be examined for slaves who run away.

[44] If you want to know the condition of the goods that were stolen or lost, and want to know what they are, the indicator of all that is the Moon.
[45] For if at the hour at which you are asked about the theft she is in the terms of Saturn, and Saturn is in the Midheaven or in his exaltation, it signifies that what was stolen is not precious but old or dirty, a thing of the kind needed for tilling the land, for building, and for earning property.
[46] If Saturn is in none of these places but is under the earth, it signifies that the goods are dirty, worn, and shabby.
[47] If Saturn is in a sign cadent from the angle, or in Aries in his fall, it signifies that the goods are worthless, cheap, dirty, old, and broken.
[48] If Saturn, being in these places cadent from the angles, regards the Moon, it signifies that what was stolen or lost has roughness and harshness in it, fit for hard work, such as a mattock, a sack, a rope, or a sickle.
[49] If at that hour of asking the Moon is not in the terms of Saturn but in the terms of Jupiter, it signifies that what was stolen or lost is gold or silver, or something shining and of that kind, or garments of brocade, costly clothing, or a precious and renowned treasure, a thing that is found only in the treasuries of the very rich.
[50] If at that hour the Moon is not in the terms of Jupiter but in the terms of Mars, it signifies that what was stolen is something worked with fire, or in a kiln, or at a smith's forge, or with iron, or the like.
[51] If Mars and Mercury together regard the Moon, it signifies that the thing that I said was worked with fire and the kiln is something made with skilful and fine workmanship, shapely, lovely, and variously wrought.
[52] If the Moon is in the terms of Mars, and Mars does not regard her, but Venus or Mercury regards her, it signifies that the thing I described as worked with fire and the kiln is something inlaid with dye, or with stones, amulets, or the colours of gems: something pleasing, beautiful, and of fine colour.
[53] If you are asked while the Moon is in the terms of Venus, it signifies that what was stolen or lost is silver, or gold, or a gem, or a precious stone, or garments worn by people, fine and splendid, embroidered, with colours of dye like the bloom of perfume, so that the scent of fragrance is taken from them; or a necklace, earrings, bracelets, or women's ornaments; or something sweet-smelling, perfumes and ointments, of moist substance and shining, that women desire and delight in.
[54] If at the hour at which you are asked the Moon is in the terms of Venus, and Venus is with the Moon in a feminine sign, it signifies that the goods that were stolen belong to women.
[55] If Mars regards Venus, it signifies that what was stolen is of a substance without lustre, delicately worked: glassware, carved, varied, and shapely.
[56] If when you are asked the Moon is in the terms of Mercury, it signifies that what was stolen is a writing, a notebook of many leaves, a book containing the writing of the learned, or writing tablets and rolls, or what women or men need, or what is useful on journeys, such as dinars and dirhams and things struck with a die.
[57] I shall explain what the signs signify along with what I have described to you about the terms; so mix the power of the signs with the terms, and it will be stronger for your knowledge and surer for your judgement.
[58] Look: if the Moon is in Aries when you are asked about what was stolen or lost, it signifies that what was stolen is everyday clothing, threads, wool, carpets, or ornaments worn on the head and face, or head-bands.
[59] If the Moon is in Taurus, it signifies that what was stolen is gold or silver, clothing, a mantle, or an ornament worn round the neck, or something set aside for vows, temples, and the gods, or sheep or four-footed beasts.
[60] If the Moon is in Gemini, what was stolen is dirhams or dinars, or something needed in taking and giving, contracts and papers, a notebook with writing in it, images or an idol made for the gods, and whatever is useful for feasting.
[61] If the Moon is in Cancer, it signifies that what was stolen is something of daily use for people, such as food, or some moist thing, cheap and of small amount.
[62] If the Moon is in Leo, it signifies that it is gold or silver, or something wrought of brass.
[63] If the Moon is in Virgo, it signifies that it is women's ornaments or dinars.
[64] If the Moon is in Libra, it signifies that what was stolen is a mixture of things: something used for the body, spices, ointments, and perfumes, or something bought by weight, or compounded and moulded by hand, such as pastilles, incense, or carved things, or ornaments made for the hands.
[65] If the Moon is in Scorpio, it signifies that what was stolen is gold, silver, brass, or a shining stone, a precious stone, and the like.
[66] If the Moon is in Sagittarius, it signifies that what was stolen is something of many colours, the colours of gems, of many forms, large and well made, a thing that is desired and competed for, and held dear by its owners.
[67] If the Moon is in Capricorn, it signifies that what was stolen is like what I described when the Moon is in Cancer, or similar to it, or of that kind.
[68] When the Moon is in Aquarius, it signifies that what was stolen is like what I described when the Moon is in Leo, or similar to it, or of that kind.
[69] If the Moon is in Pisces, what was stolen is like what the Moon signifies when she is in Sagittarius, or similar to it, or of that kind.
[70] If the Moon is increasing in her reckoning and in her light, what was stolen is something new and newly made; and if the Moon is decreasing in her reckoning and in her light, it signifies that what was stolen is old or worn.
[71] If you are asked a question and the Ascendant is a bicorporeal sign, it signifies that what was stolen is two things, or something double and joined, one part to another; and if the application of the Moon is in a bicorporeal sign, or the Moon is in a bicorporeal sign, it signifies the same.
[72] If you want to know the number of the goods that were stolen, count from the first degree in which the Moon is to the degree in which Mercury is, and see how many signs the number of degrees makes.
[73] If they are signs of even number, it signifies that what was stolen is joined together, or more than one.
[74] If the signs between the Moon and Mercury are odd, what was stolen is one thing.

[75] If you are asked about a theft, look at the Ascendant at that hour.
[76] If the two luminaries regard it, the one who stole those goods is of the people of the house and the household, and did not come in from outside.
[77] If one of the two luminaries regards the Ascendant and the other is far from the Ascendant and does not regard it, it signifies that the thief is not of the household, but he comes and goes there often and its people know him.
[78] If neither luminary regards the Ascendant, the thief is a stranger, a foreigner, who came in from outside: there is no acquaintance between him and the household, and he has not frequented the house before.
[79] If you want to know the appearance of the thief, his form and his colour, the planets that are at that hour in the sign opposite the Ascendant are the indicators of that.
[80] If you find no planet at all in that place, look at the sign cadent from the sign of the Midheaven, which is the ninth from the Ascendant.
[81] Look at the planets in it, for they signify the description of the thief, his colour, and his appearance.
[82] If you find this sign too empty, with no planet in it, look at the sign cadent from the Ascendant, which is the twelfth from the sign of the Ascendant.
[83] If you find any planet in it, it signifies the description and appearance of the thief.
[84] If you find this place also empty, look at the Moon at that hour, to which planet she applies bodily, for that is an indicator of the description of the thief.
[85] If the Moon at that hour applies to none of the planets, look at the Moon, from which planet she is coming out and to which planet she is going, for these two planets signify the description of the thief.
If no planet is joined to the Moon, see which planet, within seven days before the theft, made some phase or station or passed from one sign to another, and from that planet you will know the form and appearance of the thief.
[86] If the indicator of the description of the thief is Jupiter, the thief is white-skinned, plump and well-fed, of good condition, with large eyes, and the pupils smaller than they should be for the size of the eye, not sharp-sighted; their beards are round, thick, and curly, and their character and manners are good.
[87] If the indicator of the description of the thieves is Saturn, it signifies that the thief is ugly in face, black in colour, his gaze downcast toward the ground and broken, small-eyed and short-sighted, lean, with a crooked gaze, wrinkled, overcast with yellowness, hairy, with much hair, with joined eyebrows, a liar, sickly, foul-smelling, gloomy of face; his character and manners run to concealment and tricks, deep, a man of brooding thought and scrutiny.
[88] If the indicator of the description of the thieves is Mars, the thief is ruddy in colour, with fair, reddish hair, straight-haired, fierce and sharp of gaze, with grey eyes, round in face, with small ears, cheerful, a joker, a man of whims who turns himself from one state to another, quick to impulse, sharp of glance, bold in harming people and quick to rush out at them.
[89] If it is Venus that signifies the thief, the thief is handsome and shapely, with much hair on the head, thick, with beautiful eyes, the black of his eyes larger than the white, white of cheek and colour, his whiteness mixed with red and slightly dark, plump and fleshy, of good manners and bearing, well disposed, receptive to what is fair.
[90] If the indicator of the description of the thief is Mercury, it signifies that the thief is thin, lean and dryish, well-boned, of moderate and well-proportioned stature, curly-haired, with a good beard, yellowish, not straight in his thinking, of many-sided mind.
[91] If the indicator of the description of the thief is the Sun or the Moon, his description and likeness are of the kind I described in one of these places, according to the planet that is with the Sun or the Moon, or regards the Sun or the Moon, and is blended with them.
[92] If the Sun and the Moon do not regard the planets, but are turned away from them, with no regard to any planet nor any planet with them in one sign, and the Sun is the indicator of the description of the thief, it signifies that the thief is plump, well-fed, compact, ruddy, and that yellowness and pallor are mixed in his eyes.
[93] If the Moon is the indicator of the description of the thief, it signifies that the thief is fair of aspect, well-tempered, white, fleshy, round in face, with beautiful eyes.
[94] Look also at the nature of the signs in which the indicating planets are found, for it is fitter that they agree with one another, and more likely that you will know this and judge it more exactly.
[95] For the nature and form of the sign signify, along with the planet that signifies the description of the thief and his kind, if the sign is with the planet that indicates the description of the thief; so mix the signs with the positions of the planets.

[98] Gemini signifies that the thief is of moderate, well-proportioned stature, long-nosed, delicate, broad between the shoulders, with shapely shoulders, of good character and manners; some of them write and know letters, and some were trusted before this and have a standing among people, approved by them.
[99] Cancer signifies that the thief is large of frame, thick-boned, thick-haired, broad and stern of face, black in colour, with irregular teeth, of moderate stature, his lower parts larger than his upper parts.
[100] Leo signifies that the thief is grey-eyed, red-haired, fair and ruddy, straight-haired, handsome to look at, his upper joints larger and more massive than his lower, thin in the shanks, irascible, harsh, savage of mind and face, sharp of gaze, the sharpness of his gaze resembling that of wild beasts, gluttonous; and some of them are wrestlers, known for it.

[104] Sagittarius signifies that the thief is long in the thighs and legs, broad in the shanks, well-formed, more handsome when seen from behind than from the front, his beard straight, long, pointed, and sparse, red in colour, pot-bellied, clever, light, swift-footed, thin, a runaway, a wanderer, a swimmer, an archer, skilful with his hands, resourceful in gain, a spendthrift, generous, irascible; some of them are greedy for animals and fond of sheep, and some are bald or have no hair.
[105] Capricorn signifies that the thief is thin and wretched in the shanks, lean, bony, hairy, the form of his face resembling the goats among the flocks, goat-eyed, with a straight and pointed beard, sharp of glance, his gaze toward the ground; his opinion does not turn from one state to another [text uncertain]; light of thought and of aspect, a jester, somewhat foolish.
[106] Aquarius signifies that the thief is neither tall nor dwarfish but of moderate stature and middle age, with a dignified face, eager for adornment, eager to amass wealth, with a good beard, playful, fond of good food and luxury, of good manners; he spends much on food and on keeping himself clean, and one of his shanks is larger and longer than the other; he is unlucky in what he undertakes.

[108] The indicator of this description is the planets and the signs when they are mixed with one another; but one should not think that all the signs are to be found in each case without omission, but judge as far as can be done with skill, and confirm the judgement from the planets configured with them.

[109] If the benefics regard the indicator that signifies the description of the thief, the thief is a man of standing, and free.
[110] If the malefics regard the indicator, the thief is a slave or a slave woman, or one whose work is service, or a poor man, or a hireling.
[111] If it is Venus that signifies the thief and his description, the one who stole is a woman, or the theft was for women: a woman will be the cause of the theft.
[112] If Mercury is the indicator of the thief, the thief is a boy or a young lad.
[113] If Mars is the indicator of the thief, it signifies that he is a young man in his prime.
[114] If Jupiter is the indicator of the thief, it signifies that the thief is of middle age.
[115] If Saturn is the indicator, it signifies that the thief is advanced in years.
[116] Along with what I have described to you, look at the positions of the planets, and mix them with what I described to you at the beginning of this book.
[117] If the planet is oriental, in its morning rising, it signifies that the thief is young, a boy.
[118] If it is occidental, at its evening setting, it signifies that he is advanced in years, old.
[119] If it is making its first station, it signifies that he is in his prime;
if it is rising at nightfall, of middle age;
[120] and if it is making its second station, that he is greying, nearer to old age than to youth.
[121] If the indicating planet is under the beams of the Sun, in its evening concealment, it signifies the age of that thief: he is old.
[122] When a planet comes out from under the beams and becomes occidental or oriental, the oriental signifies that he is young and the occidental that he is old.
[123] If it is Saturn that has come out from under the beams and has become oriental, mix his nature with the place where he has become oriental: he then signifies that the thief is of middle age, neither very old nor young, the judgement being mixed from the child and the old man.
[124] If the indicator is Mercury or Venus and they are oriental, they signify that the thief is a girl or a young lad.
[125] If they are occidental, they signify that the thief is of middle age.
But some say that Venus and Mercury as evening stars rising signify young men or young women as the thieves; after the first station, as evening stars setting, men of middle age; and as morning stars rising, older people.
[126] If the indicator is in its exaltation, it signifies that the thief is sound of limb, large and tall of body.
[127] If it is in its fall, it signifies that his limbs are not sound, that there is a defect in them, and that he is small.
[128] If that planet is near its exaltation, it signifies the like of what I described when it is in its exaltation, and near its fall, the like of its fall; reckon the size proportionally to its distance.
For example, let Mars, signifying the thief, occupy the third decan of Aries: we say that the thief is of middle size, for from the third decan of Capricorn this is the middle of the interval of the half-circle.
If he were in Pisces or in Scorpio, we would say that the size is greater than middle, and if in Taurus or Virgo, less than middle.
[129] So too if it applies to a planet in its exaltation or in its fall.
[130] If the indicator of the thief is within seven days of entering under the beams of the Sun after the theft has been committed, know that the thief has fallen into some evil.
[131] If it is Mars that regards that planet, it signifies that the thief has met with wounds, tortures, prison, punishment, hardship, and grievous dangers.
[132] Look in this matter at the Lot of Fortune.
[133] If no malefic regards it, it signifies that no theft has taken place, but the thing sought has only fallen somewhere and is hidden; and if the Sun alone regards the Lot of Fortune, it was not stolen at all but is hidden.

[134] If it is Saturn that regards the Moon and the Ascendant, it signifies that the thief contrived, schemed, and deceived, through some guile and ambush, until he stole.
[135] If Jupiter is the indicator of the thief, it signifies that the thief did not intend theft but entered the house for some other reason, trusted on account of a feigned good character and a pretence of decency, and the theft presented itself to him after he had entered the house, when he saw what was exposed.
[136] If it is Mars that regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it is a matter in which he reached the theft by force and violence: he broke in, or dug through the wall of the house in which the goods were, or broke the lock, or made a copy of the key, or forced the door, or entered through a window of the house.
[137] If it is Venus that regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it signifies that the thief entered for conversation and on account of a friendship that was between him and the household, or for companionship, merriment, or women, and, trusted on that account, he stole.
[138] If it is Mercury that regards the Ascendant and the Moon, it signifies that the thief entered the house only by guile, trickery, cleverness, and villainy, intending mischief against the people of the house in which he stole.
