§[506]. What is reception?

It is that the lower planet is in one of the portions of the upper, so that it makes itself known to it by the relation it has to it, like one who says, 'I am your son', 'I am your servant', 'I am your neighbour'. If the upper is also in the portions of the lower, the reception is complete, and it is doubled by the number of the portions, especially if it is from an aspect that is not disliked. The opposite of reception is rejection.

§508. What is the pusher?

We have said that the pusher is the one that applies, and it is qualified by management. The pusher is in one of these cases: it is in one of its own portions, without regard to the state of the one pushed to, and its application is called the pushing of power; or it is in one of the portions of the one pushed to [corrected: MS has 'in one of its own portions'], without regard to its own state, and it is called the pushing of nature, which is exactly the reception we have mentioned; or the two share in the sign of the pusher, each of them having a claim there, and it is called the pushing of two natures, as though the pusher of the two pushed to it its own nature and the nature of its partner together. The name is also given to the application of a planet in its ḥayyiz to a planet in exactly the like of its ḥayyiz, because the ḥayyiz is complete only with the two conditions: so when a diurnal planet in its ḥayyiz applies to a diurnal planet in its ḥayyiz, it is called the pushing of two natures.

二性之推pushing of two natures两者共有推者之座

§510. Does anything stand in place of application?

When two planets, a lower and an intermediate, apply to an upper one, it has collected their light. If the two that apply aspect each other, they are in that state also applying to each other; and if one of them is fallen away from the aspect of the other, the gathering of their light stands in place of application without aspect, and this is collection. If a lower planet separates from an intermediate that is fallen away from the aspect of another, upper planet, and after its separation applies to the upper, it has carried its light to it, and this is transfer. It occurs also between two aspecting planets when their application is far off, so that this transfer stands in its place. Transfer has another form: a lower planet applies to an intermediate, and that intermediate is applying to an upper one, so it stands in place of the application of the lower to the upper. This is when one of them is fallen away from the other, because the lower, apart from aspect, is quick in catching up to join the upper. In some books the transfer of Mars between the Sun and Saturn is called the greater transfer, and the transfer of the Moon between them the lesser transfer. Sometimes two planets are fallen away from a third, or from an assigned place in the orb, and then they apply to a planet that aspects them and looks at that third or that place, so that it is like a mirror that has reflected its light from one side to the other. They have called this return, and it shares the name confusingly with the return mentioned before. They have given it another form, which is transfer itself, adding nothing to it except mention of separation: they said that when, between two planets, the lower of them has separated from the upper and applied to another, it has returned the light of one of them upon the other. And as the first stood in place of application, so this ought not to be without the force of separation. If in place of the name 'return' here some word were put that stands in its place, such as 'turning' or 'reflection', the confusion would increase.

开门the opening of the door本庙对冲之星相接

§512. How do the strength and weakness of the planets come about?

We have mentioned their states with respect to the Sun, to one another, to their orbs, to the orb of the signs and to the figure of the houses, by which the goodness and badness in each of them is known. The sum of all the qualities of goodness, or most of them, in one planet is the utmost of strength for it, and as they decrease its strength decreases; their opposites and contraries, taken together, are the utmost of weakness for it, and as they decrease the weakness decreases. As for setting them out one by one: when the planets are direct in their course, swift, increasing, free from concealment by the rays, eastern if they are upper and western if they are lower, in an aspect of the two luminaries while these are fortunate, praised and receiving; with the benefics present with them or aspecting them, and the malefics fallen away from them, or the fixed stars agreeing with them in nature in conjunction with them; then if they have risen in their orbs so that their passage mentioned before is above the malefics and below the benefics, and they are in the north, ascending, and have alighted in the signs in the houses of the benefics and in their own portions and in what agrees with them in nature, or in houses of theirs with respect to the horizon, and they are in their ḥayyiz, advancing in the angles and in those that follow them, in the joys and in the increasing quarters that agree with them, rising above the malefics and overpowering them: then they are strong in the utmost degree. When they are slow and going toward retrogradation, fallen away from the two luminaries or aspecting them with enmity, not receiving; with the malefics aspecting them with enmity or present with them, and the fixed stars contrary to them in conjunction with them; and they are going down in their orbs so that in the passage the malefics are above them and not the benefics; and they have descended in the south, and have alighted in the houses of the malefics and their portions, strangers to their own pourings forth, and they are in their detriment or their fall and contrary to their ḥayyiz, and have declined from the angles and those that follow them to the decreasing quarters that are contrary to them, in the places opposite their joys, and the malefics have risen above them: then they are at the extreme of weakness. This is the state of strength and weakness in simple speech; then it varies by mixing, and the way to that is found when practice has brought skill to completion.
