XII. On the Bonds.

One must observe, when the count falls by degree into a bond, or at the end of the six-degree span, that one makes the addition or subtraction of the years falling due according to the zodiacal arrangement of the instrument. For the comparison of two procedures and methods, if they should give the same periods or ones close to each other, one must examine whether the degrees fall together in the same sign; and in the neighbouring signs they strengthen the substance of the years, if the sacred gnomon falls from day into night or from night into day; for from these the exact degrees of the luminaries will also be graspable.

XIII. Method for the Periods of Life, Active and Inactive, in Relation to the Sun and the Moon.

This too occurred to me concerning the method set out, that is, the one of the 27 years, to append also 24 lunar cycles. When the nativity admits the number, one should work as has been written before; but for the nativities of infants as follows. Making the release from the Moon, give 2 months to each sign, and then up to the lunar application and the trine or square, and then also the casting of rays of the malefics upon an angle, according to the same period of the substance that has come near [text uncertain].

XIV. On Conception, for the Topic of the Length of Life.

One must also take in this mode, as we made clear earlier in the account of conception: take the Moon by degree at the delivery as the Ascendant of conception, and the hour of the delivery as the Moon of conception; and having recognized the interval of the days of conception, work with the conjunctions and full moons and the other distances; and [lacuna] of the method, the Ascendant of the delivery will agree.

XV. That One Must Fix the Hour of Birth Precisely to the Fraction.

Since the ancient wise man, beloved of the Muses, set up two Strifes, of which the one is warlike and fearful, rejoicing in blood and griefs and death, in battles and envies and harmful causes, and the other industrious and a lover of the beautiful, peaceful, and not repentant of her works because she turns toils into pleasures (and the goddess is good, of whom I too became a lover, wishing to win a victory over those who oppose and the envious through my experience and my mind that loves the beautiful), I was not content to leave the methods written before as a pledge to those who come after and to the lovers of the beautiful, but I found out another powerful one as well and made it clear, so that, having tested in each chapter my ungrudging spirit, with all frankness and with a dignified rivalry they may quench the deadly and slanderous voices of the enemies (for anger nourished by envy and grief withers away, especially when enmities incline toward defeat), and so, having trained themselves eagerly in the treatises composed by us, they may proclaim the blame of the theory turned into praise, knowing that the science possesses delight and pleasure, benefit and blessedness, and wisdom beyond the many.

Taking the interval by degree from the conjunction or full moon to the Moon at the delivery, and subtracting the zodiacal circuit, the whole number of signs, take the remainder as the fraction of the Ascendant, from which the exact degree of the Moon too becomes manifest; and from this the aim of what is sought will be understood, the Sun presiding over the magnitudes of the day and of the hours according to the differences of the climes and the alterations of the periods. Even if what has been said has a concise and very brief exposition, readers must not neglect it or treat it as a side-matter, but track it out with all care and zeal; for most things are taught, as I have found by experience, by necessity, toil, poverty, rivalry, self-control, and desire; having met with these, even if we boast thus, we have failed to arrive at the perfect part of virtue; but some, having stumbled and become notorious, have fared badly, having acquired an empty vainglory from what they undertook. The fraction by itself too possesses an Ascendant power; and otherwise, taking the interval by degree from the conjunction to the Moon by rising time and subtracting a whole number of signs, take the degree at which it ended as the Ascendant. Likewise also from the full moon to the Moon, or, as it seemed to me, from the Moon to the coming conjunction; taking and subtracting thus the whole number of signs, take the degree found as the Ascendant degree; but the force of the years must be completed by first adding or subtracting the equinoctial time-degrees; for adding both gnomons together and taking half, you will find what is continuously sought from the truth and from manifold nature. For of every kind the beginning is single, varied, and hard to grasp, while the tracking out is manifold and varied; and if the interval precisely holds the grasp, it also reveals the period as single. Hence, my most honoured Marcus, since you know the arithmetical construction of tables and the methods of the treatises, which you have tested through deeds and words and through the teachings received from me, bringing in besides from your own nature the faculty of blending, take care to carry out the workings with all precision; for, travelling among the many nations and climes of the inhabited world and giving demonstrations, you would deem me worthy of everlasting fame, and you yourself will be glorified among many as worthy of the heavenly theory, and, having been grounded beforehand in the abundance of learning, you will arrive at the rank of the writers of treatises; for you have nature, toil, and self-control, and, having obtained a dignified and sacred entry, you have gained an enlightened initiation. This I urge you to guard through the oaths written before, and not to be carried away in rivalry toward the unworthy or the uninitiated; for it is better for you to be defeated in silence than to be impious toward divine things by winning.

XVI. Method for the Length of Life in Relation to the Sun and the Moon.

Having once now fought through many contests and fallen in with countless toils, guided by my desire and my rivalry against my opponents, and expecting that I had already gained possession of the questions and was about to bring my writing to an end, like a good athlete at the sacred contest, the spectacle of the Olympic games, I turned my mind back again on account of the manifold operations of nature; for he who leads and lifts up into the light [text uncertain] possesses honour and everlasting glory, and, turning his former toils into pleasure and delight, strengthens his power and proves his actions and dismisses idle talk, and makes his enemies friends and sympathizers even against their will, and embraces many admirers.

Hence we must go again to the rulers of the cosmos, the Sun and the Moon. Having calculated them by degree by rising time according to the magnitude and the clime, one must subtract whole cycles of signs and take the remaining degree as powerful, and also its partner, which the equinoctial will show. Four degrees in all will be productive, and of the 4, again, 2 will be left as strong. Sometimes, then, 5 places too will be productive, or again 2; and one must examine the Ascendant and the signs on either side of it. For from these too the productive degrees, when reckoned, give the periods, especially when the Ascendant seems to be in error; or else use one gnomon for the sign in the Ascendant, and the other [text uncertain] signifies at degree 16 one thirtieth. One must also bear in mind the differences of the climes; for often some place or nation that seems to have the beginning or the end of a parallel properly belongs to the region of another, or is split into 2 parallels, and seems to go astray in the period by addition or subtraction; and besides, as some of those devoted to such matters suppose, they have produced differing geographies; but the theory and the method are sacred and unfailing for those who have intelligence.
