Another. Year 5 of Domitian, Hathyr 24, hour 5½. The Sun in Sagittarius 3, the Moon in Gemini 4, the Ascendant in Pisces. Beside the degrees of Sagittarius is set Sagittarius, and again beside the 3, Sagittarius. This I found in Pisces at about degrees 11 and 12. Then beside the 4 degrees of the Moon in Gemini is set Virgo; in Virgo, beside the 11, is set Scorpio; this I found in Pisces at about degree 26. The columns in between are 5; these I subtracted from the 11, and 6 remain. I took, then, the remaining 24, and the 3 of the Sun, and the 4 of the Moon; they come to 31. These I counted off from Gemini, and they ended at Cancer, degree 1, in the place of Scorpio. This I found in Pisces again at about degree 6; the signs in between are 7; these I subtract from the 6 of Pisces, and there remain Aquarius, degrees 29, which are in the Ascendant. Beside these are set, for the 4th clime, in the first limit 22 33, in the 2nd limit 42 27; they come to 65; he died in his 65th year.

Beside the 8 of Sagittarius is set Cancer, in Cancer Taurus; this I found in the same Ascendant at about degrees 1, 2, 3. Beside the 27 of the Moon in Taurus is set Aries; in Aries, beside degrees 1, 2, 3, is set Leo; this I found in Taurus at about degree 19. The columns in between are 6; these I subtract from degree 1 of Taurus, and there remains Aries 25; the remaining 5 of Aries, and the 8 of the Sun, and the 27 of the Moon come to 40. These I count off from the lunar sign, and the count ends at Gemini, degree 10, in the place of Sagittarius. This I found in Aries at about degrees 6 and 7, and the columns between it and degree 25 are 6 [text uncertain]. These I added to the 25 of Aries; the Hour comes to be Taurus, degree 1, beside which are set, for the clime of Babylon, in the 1st limit 0 48, in the 2nd 24 26, and in the 3rd 53 4. I added together, then, the 3 limits, and they come to 78 18 [corrected: Kroll prints 78 48]; he lived 77 years 2 months [corrected: Kroll prints “77 42”].

Beside the 3 degrees of the Sun is set Pisces; this I found in Cancer at about degree 10. Likewise beside the 13 degrees of the Moon in Leo is set Aquarius, and beside the 10 is set Libra; this I found in Cancer at about degree 18. The signs in between are 2; these I subtracted from the 10, and 8 remain. I took the remaining 22 of Cancer, and the 3 of the Sun, and the 13 of the Moon; they come to 38. These I counted off from the Moon, and the count ended at Virgo 8, in the place of Libra. This I found in Cancer at about degree 18. The signs between it and degree 8 are 3. These I subtracted from the 8, and there remain 5 degrees of Cancer, beside which is set 5 20; he died in his 6th year.

The Sun in Taurus 29, the Moon in Scorpio 15. Beside the 29 of Taurus is set Scorpio, in Scorpio Libra; this I found in Aquarius at about degree 10. Then beside the 15 of the Moon is set Virgo; in Virgo, at the degrees found before, Libra; this I found in Aquarius at about the same degree. The remaining 20 of Aquarius, then, and the 29 of the Sun and the 15 of the Moon come to 64; these I count off from the Moon, and the count ends at Capricorn 4, in the place of Virgo. I seek Virgo in Aquarius, the sign in the Ascendant; I found it at about degree 6; the column in between is 1; this I add to the 10 degrees, and the Ascendant comes to be Aquarius, degrees 11, beside which is set, for the 2nd clime, in the 2nd limit, 31 25; he died having completed 32 years.

Hence one must not always trust the Ascendants that are given, especially in nocturnal nativities, or in those which have the Sun in the winter circle, because of the murkiness of the air and the guesswork about the hours; but one must compare the reckoned Ascendant as well and the signs on either side of it. If one wishes to test the sign that rises before, it will be necessary to subtract from the lunar degrees reckoned beforehand for the reckoned hour the amount falling to the sign or to the hours according to the Moon's course; and in the case of the succedent sign, likewise to add the amount falling to it to the degrees of the Moon; for so the division will always be judged free of error.

Another. Year 3 of Hadrian, Phamenoth 29 into the 30th, hour 4½ of the night. The Sun in Aries, degrees 7; the Moon in Pisces 2; the Ascendant in Scorpio. This by itself did not show the substance of the years, but from the outcome of the effect and from the refinement it was found, from Sagittarius, in Scorpio, as follows. Beside the 7 of Aries is set Sagittarius; beside the 7 of Sagittarius is set Cancer. This I sought in the compulsory Ascendant, Sagittarius, so that the natural one might be found; it is clearly at about the same degree, 6. Then beside the Moon's 2 degrees of Pisces is set Pisces; in Pisces, beside the 6, is set Taurus. This is in Sagittarius at about degree 12; there is 1 column in between; this I subtracted from the 6, and there remains 5 of Sagittarius. Then I took the remaining degrees of Sagittarius, 25, and the 7 of the Sun and the 2 of the Moon; they come to 34; these I counted off from the Moon, and the count ended at about degree 4 of Aries, the place of Capricorn. This I found in Sagittarius at about degree 24; the columns between it and degree 5 are 7; these I subtracted from the 5 degrees of Sagittarius, and there remain Scorpio 28, which are in the Ascendant. Beside these, for the 2nd clime, are set years 28 degrees [text uncertain], in the 1st limit 33 33; he died having completed 33 years.

The refinement set out above being so, we have also found another, rarely, in certain nativities, which we shall also append, so that some may not be entangled or reject the procedure. When the luminaries are found in square, or in opposition, or with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun, we shall calculate thus. For the sake of example, let the Sun be in Sagittarius, degrees 30, the Moon in Sagittarius, degrees 25, the Ascendant in Virgo. Beside the 30 degrees of Sagittarius is set Aries; in Aries, beside the 30, is set Scorpio; this I found in Virgo at about degree 11; this is the solar gnomon. Likewise beside the 25 degrees of the Moon in Sagittarius is set Scorpio, and I seek the same 25 again in Scorpio; I found it in Gemini. This I seek in Virgo; I found it at about degree 26; this will be the lunar gnomon. The columns between it and the solar gnomon were found to be 5; these I subtract from the 11, and they come to 6; of so many degrees the Ascendant comes to be, beside which are set, for the 7th clime, 71 years, which he lived.

Likewise beside the 7 of the Moon in Sagittarius is set Cancer; in Cancer I found the 7 again at Aries; this I found in Libra at about degree 18; this is the lunar gnomon. There will be 2 columns in between; these I subtract from the 11 of the solar gnomon, and 9 remain; Libra 9 degrees is in the Ascendant, from the Sun and the Moon together. For these hold all things together and govern the phases of the planets, which revolve now one way, now another, and exchange their power. But according to our account the degrees of the circle are 360, which the Sun, ruler of the cosmos, rides through in a year; and he apportions to each the visible span of time, while the kinds of death will vary; for one can see many dying at the same age, but not on the same day or at the same hour or by the same suffering and fate. For the Sun passes through one degree in a day and night, yet does not bring about the same things for those born then, because of the momentary and hourly deviations.

Its degree, then, and the hour and the minutes involve a great difference in the addition or subtraction of years, especially when it runs onto the bonds. For example, beside degree 2 of Leo is set 6, which signifies 22 years according to the magnitude. Beside degree 3 of the same sign, since there is a loosing of a bond, is set 20, which signifies 75 years; let the like be understood for the remaining signs too. Just as those who fall from the least bonds into the greatest become long-lived, so those who fall from the greater into the lesser become short-lived; and there are also bonds that bring about a middle length of life, when a well-tempered number coincides. From these one can find the distinction between twins born at nearly the same hour. In every nativity, then, one must watch the solar and the lunar degrees, lest they ever coincide at a bond; for these not only make people unsuccessful in their undertakings but also overturn them by violent and harmful fates, and make their deaths hazardous, notorious, sudden, and unexpected; and the illnesses of such people are dangerous and hard to cure. So the substance of this method is firm and unfailing, but on account of the degrees of the luminaries and of the hours it will belie the limits; hence one must examine and work with all care and zeal, since the theory is no side-matter or chance thing, but promises a thing equal to the gods, and immortality. And since this account too has been set out with regard to the short-lived and the long-lived, because of the strangeness and incredibility of the error, so that our composition may remain beyond reproach, we return to it.

When the Ascendant degree is found in the fitting sequence of the progression, that is, with the increments of two being added, it will not easily miss the periods; and if there should be a variation of even one degree, the difference in years will not be great. But when it falls at a bond or at the completion of a thirty, it needs varied deliberation because of the excessive variation of the years. For example, beside degree 27 of Cancer are set 104 years, and beside degree 28, 7 years; there will thus be a great difference, and one may suppose that such people have lived or died before their due or beyond their due. This account, then, is true; for in the case of those before or beyond their due, the 2 places signify by a mere point the long period or that of the short-lived. But it seems that he is not dead [text uncertain]; for the natural and precise degree of the Sun, having shown its operation, has allotted the appointed period and darkened the plausibility of the error. One must therefore watch the numbers of the thirties in the summer circle; for some will certainly live the period; but in the winter circle it is impossible for many to live the greatest period, that is, the 91 or the 75. For one must reckon from the equinoctial signs, Aries and Libra, the additions and subtractions of years according to the harmony of the magnitude, and one must know the number of years of each single sign; for it is not possible for Libra to allot beyond the 91, nor Capricorn beyond the 75. If some knave, comparing the Ascendant in this circle too [text uncertain], says that someone has lived beyond 90 years, one must understand straightaway that he is lying, wishing to make the impossible a method; and so, having condemned his own ignorance, he will recover a grasp of the truth. Or if ever a limit of part of an hour, of a period of months, being true and approaching precision, coincides with the period brought down [text uncertain], a climacteric equal to death and dangerous causes will arise, but death will not follow, because the interval of the years has become doubtful and suspect. For example, if someone puts down 3 hours, it will be necessary to look also at the position of the 2nd hour and that of the 4th, and at their periods, whether they come near the given hour; for it is possible for the one aimed at to have slipped. I do not say that one should compare a distant hour with the 3rd, such as the 7th or 8th or 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th (for this topic would become a matter of mere technique), but the neighbouring one; of the later degree, however, one must reckon 1/6 of the years, since, as I said before, in the instrument the degrees have a number of increment of 2 each, of which one will be reckoned for the years. For example, if the twelvefold magnitude signifies years 7, 16, 15, 14½, take half of these. If the Ascendant degree comes to a bond, it will make one subtraction of years from the magnitude, that is, from the 7, 16, 15, 14½. One must also examine the degree of the Sun precisely; for if it differs by a minute, I subtract the proportionate amount. From observation of the Sun I also found the Ascendant in Virgo, differing by one or two degrees.
