For the sake of example, let it be year 6 of Trajan, Choiak 1 into the 2nd, the 8th hour of the night; the conjunction in Sagittarius 8°30'. I took the interval from the conjunctional day and hour up to the day and hour of the nativity; it comes to 7 days 14 hours, which are half of the course from conjunction to full moon, that is, of the 15 days. Half of this I subtracted from the magnitude for the Ascendant, 12°0', of degree 8 of Sagittarius, which is 12, of which half is 6; this I take as the fraction of the hour. Having calculated, then, 9 hours and adding the fraction and the clime-inclination of 259, I found the total to be 373°20', from which I subtracted one circle of 360; there remain 13°20'. With these I entered the clime-inclination and found at degree 29 of Aries 16°24' of the clime set beside it [corrected: Kroll prints 16°25']; this degree, then, is productive. And I added to the 29 another 8, which I had subtracted from the solar degree, and degree 7 of Taurus comes to be in the Ascendant. With these I entered the instrument set out above at degree 7 of Taurus and found 20 set beside it; and 20 is a third of sixty. I take a third of the magnitude thus: since beside degree 29 of Aries, where the clime-inclination ended, the magnitude 16°24' is set, I multiply this by 12, and it comes to 196°48'; of this I take a third; it comes to 65½ years; he died in his 65½th year. For what reason I made the subtraction of the 8 degrees and their addition from the solar degrees, I shall show in the course of the account. And this is a conjunctional nativity, known to me from hearsay, as some do these things wishing to learn whether the science has real existence [text uncertain].

Another. Year 7 of Vespasian, Epiphi 25 into the 26th, the 6th hour of the night, the clime of the Moon [text uncertain]. The Sun in Cancer 27°43', the Moon in Pisces 12°52'; the full moon on Epiphi 22, the 6th hour of the day, in Capricorn 20. From the full-moon day and hour to the day and hour of birth there are 3 days 12 hours, which are, of the course from full moon to conjunction, that is, of the 15, 5°30' [text uncertain]. This I subtracted from the magnitude set beside degree 20 of Capricorn, which is 12°20', and there remain 5°12'; this will be the fraction of the hour. I calculated, then, 2 hours and added the fraction, with the clime-inclination of 360; they come to 340°55'. These I found in the clime-inclination at about the 29th of Aquarius, and I added the 8, and the Ascendant comes to be Pisces, degree 7 [corrected: Kroll prints Aquarius]. With these I entered the instrument at degree 7 of Pisces and found 26 set beside it, which are 1/3 1/10 of sixty; and the magnitude set beside degree 29 of Aquarius happened to be about 13. This I multiply by 12; it comes to 156; then I take 1/3 and 1/10; they come to 68; he died at the beginning of his 69½th year [sic].
Another. Year 18 of Hadrian, Phamenoth 2, the 4th hour of the day. The Sun in Pisces 9°46', the Moon in Capricorn 9°40'; the full moon was about to take place. The Moon's light being full, and the 4th hour being calculated as full together with the clime-inclination, gave the Ascendant in Taurus, degree 29. According to the instrument, beside degree 29 of Taurus is set 10, which is 1/6 of sixty; and the magnitude of degree 29 of Taurus was 17°27'. This times 12 comes to about 210; of this I take 1/6; it comes to 35; he died in his 31½th year [sic]. For the later degrees have a shortfall of the periods because of the minutes of the Sun, the degree being reckoned with regard to the amounts falling to each, a year 1/4 1/16 1/17 [text uncertain].
Another. Year 15 of Antoninus Pius, Hathyr 25 into the 26th, the 9th hour of the night ending, clime 6. The Sun in Sagittarius 2°52', the Moon in Sagittarius 6°48'; the conjunction had taken place. The interval is not great; the 9th hour, calculated as full, did not agree, but the 8th gave the Ascendant in Leo 12; with the addition of the 8 degrees, beside these is set in the instrument 4, which is 1/15 of sixty. The magnitude set beside degree 3 of Libra is 15; this times 12 comes to 180, of which 1/15 comes to 12; so many years he lived.

VIII. On the Hostile Places and Planets. On the Climacteric Places for the 1st Instrument.
One must examine the hostile places and the planets, not only in the case of the others, but also of the Ascendant, the Sun, and the Moon; for these too, coming into opposition in their transits, signify the climacterics and the deaths. For example, in the case of Saturn, one must consider the degrees opposite his degrees, to see of which god they are the terms, as is set out in the instrument; and when Saturn is there, the native will die, or in their squares or in the signs of equal rising, according as the period also coincides in the squares of the Ascendant or in the signs of equal rising. The same holds for the other planets as well; for the lords of the terms of the opposite degrees are hostile. These, then, arriving at the places, signify destructions, or at the signs of equal rising with the Ascendant.

For example, let Saturn be in Cancer, degree 21, in the terms of Venus; opposite is Capricorn, the terms of Mars; Mars was in Taurus, degree 27; when Saturn is there, the native will die. He died with Saturn in Virgo; for the square of this by degree is Scorpio, degrees 14, in the terms of Saturn; and degree 14 of Taurus is the terms of Saturn. This planet does not become hostile to himself; the sign of equal rising with Scorpio, then, is Leo, and degree 14 of Leo is the terms of the Sun. Jupiter, then, coming to the places of the Sun [text uncertain], to the sign of equal rising, destroyed him there.
Mars in Taurus, degree 27, in the terms of the Sun; the same degrees in Scorpio are the terms of the Moon. No planet becomes hostile to him; I seek, then, the degrees 27 of Leo in the sign of equal rising, which is Gemini, the terms of Venus. The native will die, then, when Mars is in Scorpio or in Pisces, the signs of equal rising, or in their squares. If one reckons the 27 of Leo, he will find the terms of Saturn; and Saturn was in Cancer; the native will die, then, when Mars is in Cancer or in Sagittarius or in their squares.
Venus in Scorpio, degrees 27, in the terms of the Sun; the opposite degrees, Taurus 27, are the terms of the Sun. He does not become hostile to himself. I seek, then, the 27 in the sign of equal rising with Scorpio, and they are the terms of Mercury; the native will die, then, when Venus is in Virgo, where Mercury is, or in its squares; the same must be done for Mercury too. One must also examine the decumbitures in relation to the opposing planet that is in the hostile places, and the planets that make the monthly, daily, and hourly climacterics in relation to the Moon's thirty, from which the opposing planet is found.

First one must speak about the construction of the instrument, so that if anyone wishes to compute it by hand he may easily find its structure. About the structure of the instrument you will find it in order thus. Multiply 1/60 of the magnitude of the day by 30, and the result will be the period of life, and no planet will either add or subtract. What I mean is this. Someone posits certain stelae found in the holy sanctuaries, whose increment is by the addition of two. Each of the stelae, 1/60 of the magnitude of the day being multiplied, makes the period of life. For example, the beginning is from Thoth; the first degree has 2 or 2 1/4 set beside it; up to 6 the two is increased, and they come to 6, which have the number 12 set beside them. Then it looses the bond; for every 6 the loosings of the bond take place. It adds, then, the number 14 to the six set out, which are the lights of the Moon. There come to be, then, for 7, 26; for 8, 28; for 9, 30; and since the 30 have been filled, it begins again from the two. And again there are found set beside 11, 4; beside 12, 6; and again the six of the two has been filled. A loosing of the bond takes place, and again the 14 are added to the 6, and they come to 20 at the 13th row. So they do it, then, for each six, the bond being loosed and the 14 being added to the number set out [corrected: Kroll prints 10]. If, in the middle of any six whatever, as has been shown for the second, the thirtieth number is completed, we shall no longer add the 14, but the beginning is again from the two. So, then, the structure, taking its start from the beginning, has set an end to the instrument up to one thirty. For knowing the first number of each sign the method is this, which is set out next [lacuna]
