VI. On the Construction of the Rising Times and of the Three Limits.

第六章　论上升时间与三种界限的构造。

The construction of the rising times and of the three limits is made up as follows. For the sake of example, let Aries rise in the second clime in 20; these I doubled, and they come to 40. I set beside degree 1 0°40', which are 48 [text uncertain]; beside degree 2, 1°20'; beside degree 3, 2°0'; beside degree 4, 2°40'; beside degree 5, 3°20'; and up to degree 30 the 0°40' gathered together fill out the 20 years.

Next we shall fit together the 2nd limit thus, in sequence, at degree 1. Since Taurus rises in 24, I doubled these, and they come to 48, which I added to the 20 of Aries; and there come to be at degree 1 of Taurus 20°48', at degree 2, 21°36', at degree 3, 22°24', at degree 4, 23°12', at degree 5, 24°0'; and so on up to degree 30, adding the 0°48' to the 20, we shall find 44°0'.

The third limit we shall arrange in addition thus, in sequence: degree 1 of the third limit, 44°56'; at degree 2, 45°52'; at degree 3, 46°48'; at degree 4, 47°44'; at degree 5, 48°40'; and so on up to the 30. Arranging the 56 in addition, then, we shall find 72. Likewise for the remaining signs too, setting down the rising time of the sign in the 1st limit and carrying it on, we shall find it; in the 2nd, that of the following sign; in the 3rd, that of the 3rd sign, for whichever clime one wishes.

We have made the rising times clear in the 1st book as well, and now we have distinguished the limits. I think, then, that the guidance has been set out in a way fit for teaching; and it would have been enough, like the rest, to leave it so, or even, after appending nativities, not merely seven, as some do, but more, not to disclose the causes; but one must not make oneself like them in malice and envy. And lest anyone think that we have adopted a character quick to change its mind, I shall append demonstrations from nativities [text uncertain]. That the ancients too used this method has become quite clear to us also from the author's having said in mystic fashion: "The place that falls by rising time brings about the limit of the whole period of life; then, when it allots the vital periods, it is seen to hold the active and inactive periods as well."

For the sake of example, let there be a nativity in year 1 of Nero, Hathyr 2, the 3rd hour of the night. The Sun in Scorpio, degree 10; the Moon in Aquarius, degree 30; the Ascendant in Sagittarius. I bring the 10 degrees of the Sun into the instrument set out above at Scorpio, and finding Pisces set beside them, I brought the 10 degrees of the Sun again into Pisces, and finding Libra set beside them, I seek it in Sagittarius; I found it at about degrees 14 and 15. This, then, will be the solar Ascendant gnomon, which I also mark. After this I come to the sign of the Moon, that is, Aquarius, and seek which sign is set beside the 30 degrees; I found Aquarius again. Into Aquarius I bring the 14 degrees found for the solar gnomon, and I find the sign Sagittarius set beside them. This I seek in the Ascendant; I found it at about degrees 1, 2, 3; this has become the lunar gnomon, in the 1st column, and the solar is in the 6th column. Since, then, the solar gnomon goes ahead, and the columns in between are 4, which are 4 degrees, I add these to the 14 degrees found before for the solar gnomon. So the Ascendant will be Sagittarius, degree 18. With these I enter the apogonia and find in the 6th clime, in the 3rd limit, 73 years; and he died in his 73rd year. If the Moon's gnomon had exceeded, I would have subtracted from the solar gnomon, that is, from the 14, the addition-and-subtraction, that is, 4; and the Ascendant would have come to be in Sagittarius, degree 10.

Another. Clime 4, year 1 of Titus, Phamenoth 20 into the 21st. The Sun in Pisces, degrees 29; the Moon in Capricorn 27; the Ascendant in Scorpio. Beside the 29 of the Sun in the instrument, at Pisces, is set Cancer; in Cancer, beside the 29, is set Capricorn. This I seek in Scorpio, the sign in the Ascendant; I found it set beside degrees 4 and 5. This is the solar Ascendant gnomon, which I mark. Then I come to the lunar sign, Capricorn, and at the 27 degrees I find Aries. In Aries I seek the 4 and 5 of the solar gnomon; I found in the 2nd column, at about degrees 4 and 5, the sign Capricorn. This I seek in Scorpio, the sign in the Ascendant; I found it at about the same degrees 4 and 5, in the 2nd column. The solar gnomon, then, agreed with the lunar, and it is clear that the hour has neither addition nor subtraction. With the 4 degrees, then, I come to the rising times and find in the 4th clime, in Scorpio the sign in the Ascendant, for the third limit, 72 years 33 set beside it; he died aged 72½.

Another. Year 17 of Trajan, clime 2, [lacuna] the 7th into the 8th, the 10th hour of the night. The Sun in Leo 22, the Moon in Taurus 14, the Ascendant in Aries. In the instrument at the 22 degrees of the Sun in Leo I found Virgo; in Virgo at the 22 I found Cancer. This, Cancer, I seek in the Ascendant, Aries. I found it at about degree 26; this will be the solar Ascendant gnomon. Then likewise, having the 14 degrees of the Moon, I enter Taurus and find Gemini set beside them, and I bring in the 26 degrees of the solar gnomon and find Aquarius set beside them. This I seek in Aries, the sign in the Ascendant; I found it at about degree 21; this has become the lunar gnomon. Between this and the solar gnomon 1 column was found, which indicates 1 degree. This I added to the 26 degrees found before, and they come to 27 degrees; the Ascendant will be Aries, degrees 27. I entered the rising times of Aries for the 2nd clime and found in the 2nd limit, at the 27, 41 years 36 set beside them; he died in his 42nd year.

Beside the 20 degrees of the Sun is set Cancer; in Cancer, beside the 20, is set Virgo. Virgo I seek in the sign in the Ascendant; I found it at about degrees 1, 2, 3; this is the solar gnomon. Then beside the 27 degrees of the Moon is set Aries; in Aries I seek the 1, 2, 3 of the solar gnomon; I found Leo. This I seek in Virgo; I found it at about degrees 4 and 5; there is no column in between, and the Ascendant is Virgo, degree 1. I entered the rising times in the 1st clime and found at degree 1 of Virgo, in the 2nd limit, 39 years 36; he died aged 40.

Another. Year 12 of Hadrian, Hathyr 1, the 9th hour of the day, clime 5. The Sun in Scorpio 8, the Moon in Capricorn 17, the Ascendant in Pisces, degrees 8. Beside Scorpio is set Taurus, in Taurus Libra; this I found in Pisces at about degree 9. Then at the 17 lunar degrees of Capricorn is set Taurus; in Taurus, beside the 9 degrees of the solar gnomon, is set Virgo. Virgo I found in Pisces at about degree 15; the columns in between are 2, which are 2 degrees. These I subtract from the 9 of the solar gnomon, since the lunar gnomon was found going ahead, and 7 remain, which are in the Ascendant in Pisces; beside them are set, for the 1st clime [sic], in the 2nd limit, 26 years 43. He lived 27 years.

Beside the 28 degrees of the Sun is set Aquarius; in Aquarius, beside the 28, Aquarius again; this I found in Libra at about degrees 4, 5, 6. Then beside the 3 degrees of the Moon in Scorpio is set Scorpio; in it I seek the 4 and 5 degrees of the solar gnomon, and I found Capricorn set beside them; this I found in Libra at about degree 22. The columns in between the solar and the lunar gnomon were found to be 7, which I subtract from the 4 of Libra; there remain Virgo, degrees 27, which are in the Ascendant. Beside these are set, in the 6th clime, in the 2nd limit, 81 years. He died aged 81.

Another. Year 18 of Trajan, Thoth 14 into the 15th, the 9th hour of the night. The Sun in Virgo 22, the Moon in Aquarius 4, the Ascendant in Leo [lacuna] is set Leo. In Leo, beside degrees 1, 2, 3, is set Sagittarius; this I likewise found in Leo, the sign in the Ascendant, at about the same degrees 1, 2, 3. Degree 1 of Leo is in the Ascendant, beside which is set, for the 1st clime, 1 year; he died in his 1st year.

Another. Year 5 of Antoninus, Tybi 28 into the 29th, the 11th hour of the night. The Sun in Aquarius 6, the Moon in Taurus 28, the Ascendant in Capricorn 6. Beside Aquarius is set Virgo, in Virgo Cancer; this I found in Capricorn, the sign in the Ascendant, at about degrees 1 and 2. Beside the 28th lunar degree in Taurus is set Aries. Bringing degrees 1 and 2 into Aries I found Leo; this I found in Capricorn at about degrees 10 and 11. The columns in between are 3; I subtract the 3 from degree 2 of Virgo [probably: Capricorn] [sic]. And there remain Sagittarius 28, which are months; he died aged 3.

Beside the 20 of Capricorn is set Libra; in Libra, Pisces; these I found in Capricorn, the sign in the Ascendant, at about degrees 29 and 30. Then beside the 28 lunar degrees in Gemini I found Aquarius set; in Aquarius, beside the 29 degrees of the solar gnomon, I found Aquarius again. This I found in Capricorn at about degrees 23 and 24; the 2 columns in between I added to the 29 of Capricorn. And the Ascendant came to be Aquarius, degree 1, beside which is set, for the 6th clime, 0 44; he died in his 1st year.

Beside the 6 of Sagittarius is set Cancer; in Cancer, the sign in the Ascendant, I found it at about the same degree 6. Likewise beside the 5 degrees of the Moon in Aquarius [corrected: Kroll prints 3] is set Cancer; in Cancer, beside the 6, is set Virgo. Virgo I found in Cancer, the sign in the Ascendant, at about degree 20; the columns in between are 5; these I subtracted from the 6, and there remains Cancer, degree 1, which is also in the Ascendant. Beside this is set 1 2; he lived 41 [text uncertain].

Another. Clime 6, year 8 of Trajan, Pharmouthi 26. Most people gave the Ascendant in Cancer, wishing, I suppose, to make the benefics angular; but we found it from the events in Gemini. The Sun in Taurus 3, the Moon in Sagittarius 23. Beside the 3 degrees of the Sun is set Aquarius; in it I found the 3 at Scorpio; this I found in Gemini at about degree 18. The one column in between I add to the 23, and they come to 24, which were in the Ascendant in Gemini. Entering at the 3rd clime [sic], I found 24 55. He lived 22 years 45 days [text uncertain].

Whoever attends to the precepts composed and to the methods for climacterics will not go astray. Just as the ruler, or the sect, or the casting of rays sometimes has an addition of years and sometimes a subtraction according to the testimonies of the benefics, in the same way this method too holds. The refinement, sought out by us with much toil, is as follows; we shall also append it by means of examples.

Another. Year 9 of Hadrian, Phamenoth 28 into the 29th, the 3rd hour of the night. The Sun in Aries 6, the Moon in Aries 30, the Ascendant in Scorpio. Beside the 6 of Aries is set Sagittarius; in Sagittarius, beside the 6, Cancer; this I found in Scorpio at about degree 22; this will be the solar Ascendant gnomon. Entering also at the 30 degrees of the Moon, I found Scorpio; in Scorpio I found the 22 degrees of the solar gnomon at about the same. The solar gnomon, then, agreed with the lunar gnomon; so I made the refinement thus. I took the remaining degrees of the Ascendant, 8, and the degrees the Sun occupies, 6, and the degrees the Moon occupies, 30, and they come to 44 degrees; these I counted off from the lunar sign, Aries, and the count ended at about degree 14 of Taurus, in the place of Gemini. This I seek in Scorpio, the Ascendant, and found it at about degree 12. The columns between it and degree 22, then, are 3; these I add to the 22 degrees, and the degrees in the Ascendant, refined, come to Scorpio 25, beside which are set, for the 6th clime, in the 1st limit, 31 28; he died in his 31st year. Most people, however, avoiding the opposed position of Mars, gave the Ascendant in Libra.

Another. Year 15 of Hadrian, Epiphi 16, the 3rd hour of the day. The Sun in Cancer 20, the Moon in Gemini 25, the Ascendant in Virgo. Beside the 20 of Cancer is set Virgo, in Virgo Cancer; this I found in the sign in the Ascendant at degree 20. Likewise beside the 25 degrees of the Moon is set Aquarius; in Aquarius, at the 20 of the solar gnomon, Aries was found; this I found in Virgo at about degree 29. Since, then, the lunar gnomon goes ahead of the solar gnomon, the columns in between are 2. These I subtract from the 20, and 18 degrees remain in Virgo. The refinement I made thus: I took the remaining degrees of Virgo, 12, and the 20 which the Sun had, and the 25 which the Moon occupies, and they come to 57. These I counted off from the lunar sign, and the count ended at Cancer, degrees 27, which signify the place of Aquarius. Seeking Aquarius in Virgo I found it at about degree 26; the columns between it and degree 18, 8, I subtract from the 8 [probably: the columns are 2, subtracted from the 18] [sic]; there remain 16 of Virgo, beside which is set, for the 2nd clime, 21 20. He died in his 21st year.

Entering the rising times, then, I found in the 3rd limit of the 1st clime 56 years set beside them; at that age he died.

The columns between it and degree 26 are 2; these I add again to the 26, and they come to 28 degrees: the Ascendant is in Cancer, and this is refined. Entering, then, the 6th clime, I found set beside the 1st limit 30 25, beside the 2nd 67 55, beside the 3rd 110 28. Of the 1st limit we reckon years, of the 2nd and the 3rd months, which come to approximately 181, that is, 15 years; and the years of the 1st limit, 30; they come together to 45 years; and he died in his 45th year.
