Above all, then, as we said before, one must examine from the general effects what the configurations of the planets are, whether beneficent or bad, and what the place is and what it can signify, and the phases of the planets present or testifying, and so foretell the effects in the sub-allotments. For example, the opposition is not altogether maleficent, nor the square, but only sometimes. Just as, then, in the general effects it is altered by the place, or by testimony, or by an angle, or by some other nature, so too in the division of the periods the effects are altered or confirmed by the entry of the planets at the moment. One must therefore of necessity attend to the entry of the planets, so that what is said may be precise and may have a power easy to grasp.

So that I may not seem to be devising the same things again, I shall append in his very words what the King disclosed concerning these matters. "Every planet, either present in its own place or being in the squares, [is] more beneficial if it is so in the nativity, or harmful in like places, if it is harmful by the periods of the nativity [text uncertain]. But if the one is beneficial and the other harmful, and both happen to be in their own place or in square, and the acquiring one, having passed into the place of the malefic, makes a sub-allotment, while the other will take away what the first had allotted, because, both being in square, the one has become the giver, while the other, having testified to the gift, has displayed the diminution of harm [text uncertain]." Again he says: "One must understand also how the one that holds sway over the periods is arranged with respect to the affairs of the nativity, and further the dominating places and those that acquire or harm. The manner will be surveyed completely not only at the beginning of the periods, where the planets happen to be, but in the intervening periods one must also look at the entries of the other planets, those that testify to or sit together with the master of the periods, Mercury and the Moon being also taken in. For it may happen that at the beginning of the periods, while they are favourable, the benefic is present in the place of acquisition, or makes its entry after some length of time, but that a malefic has entered; and though the periods are good, it will bring about a loss of what has come in. But if, the periods having turned out the other way, a benefic happens to be in the place of acquisition, and the malefic happens to have been productive for the nativity, then in the periods in which the malefic dominates the period will always be one of acquisition, none of the periods being contrary, but it will be marked in addition by the attendant difficulties and resistances.

"On each occasion one must watch the entries of each planet into the signs that belong to the nativity, and examine carefully the courses of the Moon; for whenever she happens to be in her rising in the right or left squares, regarded by Mars or Saturn, the transmission must be guarded against beforehand, which is of no avail. And if this happens in the periods of the malefics, for example in the periods of Mars, the natives come into detentions and burdens or entanglements of wounds; and if Mercury is added to these periods, either with Mars or in the signs that belong to Mars, it signifies that the attack or the detention will be on account of writings; and Saturn, testifying or present together, on account of certain old or paternal matters or the like, or on account of an older person. When Venus has the lordship of the periods, and Mars happens to be in the houses of Venus, it is on account of a female person; and if Venus happens to hold the periods of Jupiter [text uncertain], and Mars happens to be in Jupiter's signs, it is on account of royal matters or of some great man; and they also obtain the greatest advancements when, the periods being Jupiter's, Jupiter is in the place at the summit or in the place of acquisition together with Mars. One must therefore examine, in the case of Jupiter and Mars granting activity, whether Saturn takes up the entry and the opposition, so that the periods of the actions become adverse. And if Mercury has the lordship, and Jupiter receives from him [text uncertain], in these periods the native will be advanced in his affairs and will live well; and if he happens to be well disposed in the nativity, he will have greater actions according to the distinction in the nativity; for these things are altered by those, and those by these, in the distinctions from birth. For when the places belonging to the nativity have been shown to be unrelated [text uncertain] according to the positions of the planets, whenever the periods happen to be giving ones, as we said before, the planet was present in the place of acquisition. Having become so as a source of income [text uncertain], then, it will not make lasting what has been brought in by those that were unfamiliarly placed at the nativity; but what has been given by those properly placed for each nativity, when it happens to be given familiarly in the periods, will truly remain, whenever most of the benefic planets are present together with either, or testify, in the signs belonging to the nativity, to the one that holds sway over the periods at the time of the nativity. When Saturn takes up the place, he brings about adversity and chilling of actions; and if he also takes up the place of the planets present, while Mars holds the place of acquisition of Saturn, who has the place of actions, he will also surround the native with dangers equal to death. One must always understand that Saturn, when present in the sign of acquisition, is harmful, and also in the place opposite it, and toward Mars, Venus, and Mercury, according to the distinction of each of these. Mercury too brings about the like when in the signs of the Moon and in his own signs, receiving testimony from Mars and Saturn; and Venus the same; and every planet that is present familiarly in the natal signs and in the places of the Sun and the Moon, and blended with the aforesaid tempering distinction. It shows the like of the effects when the lordship of the master of the periods dominates together with those of the other planets that happen to be present. One must always watch the Moon in her phase, illuminated from the conjunction at the squares, especially in the tenth sign, as is set out, receiving testimony from the malefics; and if Mars and Saturn are also seen in the opposite places at the time of the nativity [text uncertain], while the Moon is passing through the principal places. She is beneficial when passing into the places of the benefics, if she is found to be in the important places of the nativity."

These things, O Marcus, I have sought and discovered with much toil and self-control, and I have composed them and published the procedures. Therefore I adjure you by the Sun and the Moon and the courses of the five planets, by Nature and Providence and the four elements, not to impart these things quickly to anyone, and especially not to an ignorant person, nor at random, considering the toil and the longing and the long time spent in study and inquiry on such matters. For, reckoning the labour of the time [text uncertain], I have left them to you in place of much money; for silver is easily spent, envied, and easily plotted against, but my treatises will provide you with livelihood, reputation, honour, pleasure, and benefit, if you conduct yourself decently and securely, as has been written above, and not in a blameworthy way nor superficially. And you yourself, then, considering the hardship to be the same as if you had composed them yourself (yet you did suffer hardship in receiving them, and you were examined, having obtained a worthy reward), impart them to those who are able; and by doing this you will glorify me and the science, and you will benefit yourself and show yourself to be a lover of toil and a lover of the beautiful. To you, if you keep the oath, may there be fulfilment according to your desire.
