V. A Method concerning Active and Inactive Periods, with respect to the Half, the Third, and the Two-Thirds of the Rising Times and of the Periods of the Planets.

第五章　关于有作为与无作为的时期的一种方法，按上升时间与诸星周期的一半、三分之一与三分之二。

Having found the procedures with much hardship and inquiry, and having further judged them from the nativities, we have set them out. We shall now append what the King and Petosiris hinted at concerning active and inactive periods. If the procedure itself seems to those who engage with it to be varied and mixed, let them rather admire what belongs to the forecast of effects and to natural activity. For to find one chronocrator among the planets, also in relation to the other methods, and to make declarations about the future, and, when through the cycling of the periods the same planet takes over again, to have it bring about the same affairs, seems to me ignorant and full of error. For the one planet brings about either good or bad, according to its own nature, in one year or in two or three years. But we find that in one period, or even in months and days, various effects come about, mixed of evils and goods, so that the affairs themselves provide us with proof. For we find in a nativity, in one period, glory, inheritance, accusation, exile, or again a notable office, grievous mourning, illness and again a governorship, acquisition of livelihood, death; and some unfortunate in body but fortunate in livelihood, others suffering reversals concerning a wife and their activities, yet robust and cheerful. These things, I think, are not accomplished by one ruler of the cosmos, but by many; and the good that was indicated beforehand is undone by the power of the malefics, and likewise the bad by that of the benefics. Hence the writer too said that some things are unguardable and some guardable: unguardable, whenever the malefics, being present alone, bring something about; guardable, whenever, while the malefics are bringing something about, a benefic falls in with them and breaks their power. And whenever in a nativity the configuration of a benefic is found and it is master of the periods, the good will come about in full; likewise also, if the periods of the testimonies of the malefics are productive together with it, both will come about according to the nature of the planets and of the signs. Besides, the good and bad things are also accomplished according to the magnitude of the nativity and of the substance. And just as in the general nativities of infants, when we find the benefics productive and the Sun or the Moon regarding the Ascendant, we promise a period of life, rank, and substance of livelihood, but if we find the malefics, we reject the nativity, so too in the division of the periods one must examine: as long as the benefics hold sway, one should promise great and active things; if they are mixed, likewise mixed things; but if the chronology of the malefics alone runs together, one should foretell dangers, overthrows, and the onset of many causes.

The King, then, says: "When, the chronology being set out before the eyes (that is, the nativity), whichever planets happen to be productive, speak with respect to all the planets [text uncertain], and another, standing over it conversely, testifies to it or also holds the application, the periods of both must be written down. For example, thus: if the Moon holds the numbered place, and another planet happens to be in the sign of the Moon, since the Moon herself holds the application in another place, it will bring down the periods of the sign, whatever they may be, whether benefics are present or contrary ones. For when Jupiter happens to be in the aforesaid place, he signifies rank, or moderate rank will come about with the collection of an acquired livelihood (that is, the Lot of Fortune, which signifies the topic of possessions and benefit; the one concerning rank is another); but if a malefic testifies together with him, or holds the application to him, in the periods of the benefics the evil too will be brought to completion. And when the period of the planet that has the interweaving is taken in together and reckoned in together, as many as are completed together, say that the effects come about at the ends of the periods or of the rising times. Every planet, then, that is angular gives its own full periods (concerning this we too have shown in what preceded), and when it is off the angles, as many as it allots, being written down as remainders from its own numbers (this reckoning, as it seems to me, we have shown in the section on the periods of life).

"Again, otherwise, suppose that the Moon dominates the aforesaid place, that Saturn is present with it, and that the place of the Moon, where Saturn happens to be present, is in the Ascendant. The complete period of Saturn has the full 30 years, that of the Moon 31 degrees [text uncertain]. Let the Moon also be angular in whatever sign she happens to be, and let Mars be succedent or following in the next sign, toward which she will also make the application, and let Saturn receive testimony from Mars, or from the Moon herself, or from the Sun. Such natives will be of lowly parents; and in the periods of the sign in which Saturn happens to be, with those of Mars added, they will suffer reversals or be on journeys abroad; and in the same periods it will be a contributing cause of injuries and cuttings of the eyes. And if the Moon, being increasing and not yet at the full moon [text uncertain], signifies deficiencies, it brings a darkening of none of the visual faculties, yet the causes arising concerning the eyes [text uncertain]; they are involved either in disablements [text uncertain] or in cuttings in the same places, because Mars applies to the light-bearing Moon, or in burnings. Then next, speak of what belongs to the planet testifying to the sign of the Moon, or present with it, if one or more happen to be present also with the Lot; and then, in order, of the succedent planets, in whatever place they happen to be succedent to any angle."

These things we have set out in his very words, because of the solution that follows; for we ourselves found it by testing and thinking it through.

If, then, as we said before, the period of a configuration runs together with the period sought, by the addition of the rising time of a sign or of the period of a planet, one should use the aforesaid instructions; then, because composite periods run together, one must attend to what is about to be said and compare the effects according to the positions of the angles, the succedent and the cadent places, and of the lots, the conjunctions, and the full moons, according to the familiar testimonies of the planets or their oppositions. If, then, the periods of the testimonies are added together, the effects will be brought to completion in the halves of these, or in the thirds, or in the two-thirds, unless they apply alone. One must also examine the application of the Moon, even if it is not in the same sign or according to the configuration of another planet, but in the following sign, and make declarations after adding together the periods of both, or of the signs in which they are present. The matters of the periods, then, will come about in many ways: at times from the Moon's course and the Lot, at times with respect to the angles, at times with respect to the planets rising in the morning and setting in the evening and the other phases, at times when they are ending [lacuna] and the periods will be grasped from the interweaving of the malefics and the benefics. As for saying that in the half, or in the thirds, or in the two-thirds periods, the cutting will come about in the place of injury, one should reckon this by taking the interval by degree; but we have discovered it to apply also to the topic of active and inactive periods.

Let there be, by way of example: the Sun and the Moon in Leo, Saturn in Virgo, Jupiter in Pisces, Mars in Sagittarius, Venus in Gemini, Mercury in Cancer, the Ascendant in Libra; the 7th clime. In the 37th year, on behalf of a woman from whom he expected great benefit, he underwent a lawsuit concerning an inheritance and was defeated before the king; the period, however, was not altogether harmful to him, but it took away his hope. The 37 years were indicated by the trine positions of the Moon toward Mars: of the Moon 25, of Sagittarius 12: they make 37; and of Jupiter toward Mercury: of Jupiter 12, of Cancer 25: they make 37. Seeking as we set out before, we found the opposition of Mars and Venus productive as follows, according to the 7th clime, and the side of the square: Saturn's Gemini 27, Venus 8, and Virgo 20 make 55, the two-thirds of which make 36 years 8 months; Pisces too signified the same. But the malefics were strong; for Venus was also lady of the Lot. He won the same lawsuit in the 35th year, but when an appeal was made he was defeated; for the 35th signified the good from the rising time of Pisces, 15, and of Gemini, 20; and again Gemini 27 and Venus 8 make 35; and again Gemini 20 and Mars 15 make 35; and again Virgo 20 and Mars 15 make 35. Both the benefics and the malefics, then, were productive, and since they were in bicorporeal signs, it will often be necessary to speak of them. The overcoming and the opposition of the malefics, then, have much power; whence Petosiris himself said: "The periods will come from the interweaving of the malefics and the benefics."

Another. The Sun in Cancer, the Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter in Sagittarius, Mars, Venus, and Mercury in Gemini, the Ascendant in Capricorn; the 7th clime. In the 25th year she seemed to prevail in the matter; for the Moon, being with Jupiter and Saturn, signified the 25, and likewise the Sun in Cancer indicated the 25. But the other planets too were productive by interweaving and opposition, for example Saturn's 30 years and Mercury's 20 in opposition make 50, half of which makes 25; and again Saturn 30, Mercury 20, and the Moon 25 make 75, a third of which makes 25; hence the matter then went into adversity. When the appeal was made, in the 27th year she was condemned; for the rising time of Gemini was productive, where the Lot of Fortune was, with Mars and Mercury present in it. Besides, the Moon's 25 and the 15 of Mars in opposition make 40, the two-thirds of which make 26 years 8 months. Likewise here too the planets happened to be in bicorporeal signs.

Another. The Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter in Scorpio, the Moon in Taurus, Saturn in Aquarius, Mars in Virgo, Venus in Libra, the Ascendant in Leo; the second clime. In the 52nd year he had the greatest disturbance and a lawsuit against his sister concerning possessions and an inheritance, and he won before the king; for the opposition of the Moon 25, Jupiter 12, Scorpio 15 was productive: they make 52. Besides, according to the second clime, Scorpio 36, Jupiter 12, and Saturn, lying upon the Lot, 30 make 78, the two-thirds of which make 52. And again Taurus 24, Aquarius 24, and Saturn 30 make 78, the two-thirds of which is 52. All the planets, then, were productive except Mars; in this period he fell ill, came near to danger at sea, and made many expenditures; but the benefics seemed to overcome Saturn and were stronger.

The woman who was defeated had the following chart. Another. The Sun and Mercury in Sagittarius, the Moon in Cancer, Saturn in Aquarius, Jupiter in Virgo, Venus in Capricorn, Mars in Scorpio, the Ascendant in Gemini; the 4th clime. Saturn and Venus indicated the 54th year, 30 and 24: they make 54; and again Scorpio 36 and Mars, lying upon the Lot, who was productive, 15, and Saturn 30 make 81, the two-thirds of which is 54; for this overcoming of the malefics was also productive. In the 53rd she had an impression and expectation of victory through the help of greater persons, whence she was also impelled to the lawsuit, since the Moon allotted 25 and Capricorn 28: they make 53. But in the 54th year she was abandoned by her helpers; for the benefics were not present together with the periods.

Another. The Sun and the Moon in Cancer, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars in Aries, Venus, Mercury, and the Ascendant in Gemini; the 1st clime. In the 47th, 48th, and 49th years he fell ill and, having suffered a great flow of blood, was paralysed, and in the same periods he was cast out of his position. The 47 years were indicated by Cancer 31 40' and Mars 15: they make 46 years 8 months; and the 48 again by Cancer 31 40', the Moon 25, and Mars 15: they make 72, the two-thirds of which is 48. In the 48th year, then, the rising time of Gemini, 28 20', and the period of Mercury, 20, were also productive: they make 48 years 4 months; whence he also obtained a little kindness and provision in the 49th year. The Sun and Saturn allotted 19 and 30: they make 49; the malefics, then, having overcome the luminaries, were contributing causes of great dangers; and if Jupiter had not been present together with them, they would surely have brought on a violent death as well.

In the 30th year [corrected: Kroll prints 35th], having fled from slavery, he stole much, and, having escaped notice for a short time, he was caught in the same year. For both oppositions were productive; for each collected 60, half of which is 30: Capricorn 28, Mercury 20, and Jupiter 12 make 60, half of which is 30; and Saturn 30 and Mars 15, the two-thirds of which is 30; and Cancer 25 and Jupiter 12, and from the trine Venus 8, make 45, the two-thirds of which makes 30. Because of the benefics, then, he seemed for a short time to have escaped the danger and to have lived pleasantly from the thefts, because the malefics had fallen in with them.

This man, being of governing rank, fell into the enmity of a governor and in the 34th year was condemned to the mines; for Mars, together with the Sun, dominates the period: of the Sun 19, of Mars 15: they make 34. In the 36th year, through the help of greater persons, he was released from detention as one causing injury; and at that time the rising time of Leo was productive in the 36th year, but Jupiter, who overcame it, 12, and Taurus 24 make 36; and also Capricorn 28 and Venus 8 make 36; the benefics, then, were strong. In the 39th year, the matter having been reversed because of the pre-existing enmity, he was condemned to an island; for those in Sagittarius held sway over the periods: the Sun 19 and Mercury 20 make 39; and take the two-thirds of the 58, which is 38 years 8 months [corrected: Kroll prints 58]. Again, the Sun 19, Mercury 20, and Leo, because of Mars, in trine, 19, make 58; for Mars 19, the Sun 19, and Mercury 20 make 58. In the 40th year he lived in danger and fell into illnesses; but a woman who had gone out with him, out of affection, consoled him in other respects and made him a sharer in her possessions. The 40 years are indicated by the application of the Moon to Mars (for the Moon's 25 and Mars' 15 make 40), and the trine position of Jupiter and Venus indicated the same; for Jupiter 12 and Venus 28 make 40. I myself was personally acquainted with these effects.
