III. A Method concerning the Periods of Life, with respect to the Lot of Fortune and Its Lord.

第三章　关于寿数的一种方法，按福点及其主。

Whether the ancients, knowing the efficacy of foreknowledge, hid it out of envy because of its grandeur and because it is hard for human nature to attain, or whether, not grasping what nature has articulated and laid down and, enclosing it with necessity, has ungrudgingly given to men, they nevertheless hinted at it, I cannot say. For it seems to me that none of the most beautiful elements in the cosmos, nor of its very many and great works, has been begrudged to men by god for use in due season; for the divine would not have shown it beforehand if it had not wished to grant it. But they did as they wished or as they were able; hence, recalling their heading below, I marvel at their crooked and hard-to-hunt judgement. I, however, have shown beforehand whatever I found through experience, and whatever I discovered further in the intervening time I did not wish to hide, because of the unexpectedness of the many effects, both good and bad, that came about in a short time or that persisted in the same state; and the subdivision set out below will teach those who love learning; for having preferred it to all others and wishing to adorn it, I shall make it clear step by step in detail. For the broad theory, having a most obscure order, is easily refuted because of the undisciplined judgement of those who engage with it. Let no one suppose, because of its variety and many parts, that the account is merely technical; rather, it deifies nature; for many, having drawn up many procedures, have composed none that is secure.

Accordingly we must proceed to the matters at hand. The deadly climacterics, then, will be grasped as I set out before in the section on the periods of life, and now in this one I shall show it more precisely. Since the periods consist of three limits, the least, the middle, and the greatest, I found their blending as follows: reckoning from the Lot of Fortune and from the ruler the periods of the planets and the rising times of the signs, first as hours, then as days, then as months, then as years, or some as hours, some as days, some as months, and some as years; and in the case of angular and oriental planets and familiar configurations, as days, then months, then the periods. For in the case of those already advanced in age it is possible to allot the periods and the rising times, but in the case of infants one must begin from the least.

Let there be, by way of example: the Sun and Venus in Aquarius, the Moon and Jupiter at the beginning of Aries, Saturn in Aries, Mars in Sagittarius, Mercury in Capricorn, the Ascendant in Scorpio, the Lot of Fortune in Libra; the 6th clime. These are the allotters: Venus, because of Libra; Saturn, because Venus is in Aquarius; Mars, because Saturn is in Aries. I reckoned, then, according to both the periods and the rising times, first as hours, then as days, then as months, as follows: I took of Libra 8 days and 8 hours, and again of the rising time of Libra in the 6th clime 3 hours, and since Venus is in Aquarius, I took of Saturn 57 hours, and again since Saturn is in Aries, I took of Mars 15 hours: they make together 8 days and 123 hours [sic], which are 5 days 3 hours; all the days make 13 days 3 hours: he lived 13 days 3 hours.

Another. The Sun, Venus, and Mercury in Cancer, the Moon in Capricorn, Saturn in Scorpio, Jupiter in Aquarius, Mars in Leo, the Ascendant in Taurus, the Lot of Fortune in Scorpio, its lord in Leo. The lord of this one, in Cancer, had passed the hours and the days of both the planets and the signs; for this reason, then, in the third place I reckoned months: of Mars 66 months and 15, and of the Sun in Cancer 25 months: they make 106 months, which are 8 years 10 months. These nativities I have set out. One must therefore look beforehand at the rulers and the places, whether they are held fast by the malefics, or are opposed, or happen to be contrary to sect, and at the other instructions.

Another. The Sun and Mercury in Aquarius, the Moon in Taurus, Saturn in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Aries, Mars in Capricorn, Venus and the Ascendant in Pisces; the 6th clime; the Lot of Fortune in Gemini. I took of Mercury 76 months, and since Mercury is in Aquarius, I took the rising time of Aquarius, 23 months, and, since Saturn is in Sagittarius, of Sagittarius 33 months: all the months make 132, which make 11 years; at that age he died. The fine days and the drop-by-drop hours we shall find by taking the 12th part of the period of each planet.

The planets that are familiarly placed toward one another and are of the sect share in the allotment with one another. For example: the Sun and Mercury in Cancer, the Moon and Mars in Libra, Saturn and Venus in Leo, Jupiter in Sagittarius, the Ascendant in Capricorn; the 6th clime; the Lot of Fortune in Sagittarius. Its lord, Jupiter, lies upon the Lot; he allotted, then, the rising time of Sagittarius, 33 years, and his own period, 12 years: it makes 45 years. Saturn, being in trine to him, shared in the allotment with 57 months of his own period: it makes nearly 50 years; and in this year he died. And if one reckons also 38 months of the rising time of Leo and 19 months of the Sun, he will collect the same number of months.

These nativities, tested from personal observation, have been set out. But if someone wishes to test the method by taking a nativity from hearsay, he will be deceived. Other climacterics too are signified whenever the period of a malefic configuration and testimony runs together; and the same reckoning holds also for the Ascendant and its lord, whenever the planets happen to be in succession or in exchange, when the Lot of Fortune or the ruler is not productive.

IV. A More Detailed Method, also concerning Active and Inactive Periods, with respect to the Rising Times and the Periods of the Planets.

第四章　一种更细的方法，也关于有作为与无作为的时期，按上升时间与诸星的周期。

Likewise one must proceed in order concerning the active and inactive periods, sub-allotting, after the yearly periods, monthly periods to the productive signs and to their rulers. And just as, when the construction of a table has a natural basis through numbers of many places and fine fractions, we see that the harmony does not settle into a solid construction unless the beginning of the number has been made quite clear, so too those who wish to go through it with precision must begin from hours and months and bring down the periods in many parts, as far as the chronology of what is sought permits. For in this way we shall find one planet as chronocrator of the rising time and another of the period; and when an effect, good or bad, has been set out broadly, in the intervening days and months the opposite comes about, and at times it seems to come early, at times to come about later. Just as a stone hurled at some finely wrought bronze vessel strikes it at a single point but produces an echo for a long time, in the same way the planets, when they become lords of the periods, having shown an effect for a short time, afterwards are effective in the manner of an echo. The configurations of the planets and their testimonies to one another are strong in the fitting periods, and especially those toward the Lot of Fortune; for the whole is surveyed and constituted from it and from the ruler.

Let there be, by way of example: the Sun and Mercury in Gemini, the Moon in Aquarius, Saturn and Venus in Leo, Jupiter in Sagittarius, the Ascendant in Libra; the 1st clime. Let us be seeking the 42nd year. I took the rising time of Libra, 38 20', which is 38 years 4 months, and again the months equal in number to these, 38 months, which are 3 years 2 months. Together they make 41 years 6 months: in this year, fleeing from a battle and falling from his horse when the enemy came on and many were killed, he himself, wounded, was mixed together with other corpses, and, pretending to be dead, escaped the danger, and remained in the enemy's country up to the 44th year, in command of an army. I brought down in addition to the aforesaid years also the 8 months of Venus, because of Libra, and the 15 months of Mars, who lies upon it; besides, the opposition of Saturn and the Moon was productive at that time: the rising time of Leo 35, and 57 months of Saturn, 8 months of Venus, 25 months of the Moon, and 19 months of Leo: together it makes 44 years 1 month. So, as far as the nativity extends, one must give the amount of the rising times, not of the periods; and then months and days, until the effect arrives at the finest part of the period. Hence in every nativity one must observe the squares and oppositions, especially when malefics are configured together unfamiliarly; for they overturn the natives with affairs that are hard to escape and follow one upon another; such people, at any rate, struggle in life, wrestling with times hard to combat, and, being easily broken and slippery, they easily fall. And if the malefics also regard them, they do not cease blaming the gods and, living painfully, they call upon death in vain, unless another testimony of the benefics, being strong, helps. For as long a period as a benefic is productive together with a malefic, the bad will be half-complete and well tempered; but if either, whichever it is, is productive alone, it signifies a secure and full effect; for the good is hindered when overcome by the malefic, and the bad is broken when consoled by the good.

One must mark the beginnings and the ends of the periods, in which the planets begin to be chronocrators or leave off the periods; for in these the effects have an effective power. And this too must be tracked out more precisely: whether the configurations of the planets and of the testimonies, whether they are alone or together, are beneficent, maleficent, middling, or well tempered, so that the declaration may be made with this in view. For often oppositions and squares of malefics have brought about nothing bad, but have even benefited, because of their being in their own places, or the testimony of a benefic, or the sect of a familiar configuration; and in these matters the ignorant go astray. Hence I often remind you about the same things; for it is better to keep the treatise free from accusation by repeating oneself and speaking at length than to leave to the envious and the foolish an occasion for speaking ill; for, vexed at the prosperity of others, they revile what is well done, being able neither to follow what is said nor to find fault with what they themselves say. Against such people this story will be fitting. It is said that once a certain youth, having found fault with the plays of Euripides, corrected them; and Euripides, coming upon him, said: "It is badly written; do you make it better." And he replied: "I do not know how to write poems, but I know how to correct what has been badly written." "Then," he said, "write your own badly and correct them well." The aforesaid procedure seems to have a very easy entrance, but its end and its passage are labyrinthine for those eager to learn the precise truth; for, grasping the beginning as if Ariadne's thread were guiding them, that is, the further division, and arriving at the place sought and finding the completed period and the effect, like Theseus the Minotaur, they will receive the greatest knowledge.

The planets will also allot the middle periods of the years of which they are master: the Sun, holding half of the 120 years, will take the 60 and also the least, 19, and it makes 79, half of which makes 39 years 6 months; the Moon half of the 108, 54, and the least, 25, and together they make 79, half of which is 39 years 6 months: these she will allot. Mars the greatest, 66, and the least, 15, and they make 81, half of which is 40 years and 6 months. Venus the complete, 84, and the least, 8: they make 92, half of which is 46. Mercury the greatest, 76, and the least, 20: they make 96, half of which makes 48. Jupiter the greatest, 79, and the least, 12: they make 91, half of which makes 45 years 6 months. These middle periods have seemed to me to be more natural.
