II. A Second Method for the Division of the Periods, with respect to the Rising Times of the Signs and the Periods of the Planets.

第二章　按星座的上升时间与行星的周期划分时期的第二种方法。

The general periods having been set out by comparison, I shall append a more detailed division, searched out through experience and toil. I warn all who wish to pursue what is best, and especially those who [follow] our procedures [text uncertain], or those who have contracted a long-standing and incurable disease of the science, to proceed soberly in the method and not to make declarations after using any procedure carelessly. For often one procedure, running together with the period, has signified something good and [lacuna] (which will indeed come about if it alone is lord of the periods); but if others of the malefics also run together with it, they have not only overturned the good but have also become contributing causes of bad things. And if the chronology of the benefics happens to be strong in the nativity, action or rank will come about with adversities and expenses; but if that of the malefics, inactivity, losses, and tumults will follow, until that of the benefics becomes productive. Often, then, a planet that is in some sign and has completed its own period, or the chronology of the sign, and seems to bring the periods to an end, [lacuna] being fitted together, becomes the cause of another effect as well, or holds the nativity fast in the same affairs [text uncertain]. One must also take in addition the sides of the sextile, especially when they alone are productive, as being strong and beneficent. In the nativities of infants, however, one must reckon the periods of the testimonies first as days, then as the years themselves.

Let us append nativities by way of example, which we have tested with precision in certain effects and as I happened upon them. For example, for the sake of illustration: the Sun, the Moon, and Mercury in Sagittarius, Saturn in Cancer, Jupiter and the Ascendant in Scorpio, Mars in Capricorn, Venus in Aquarius, the Lot of Fortune in Scorpio; the second clime. In the 33rd year he was exiled; for the rising time of the sign in which Saturn was, with Mars opposing, and the sextile position of the Moon toward Venus signified a plot through female persons in the 33 years. In the 27th year he had a danger on account of Capricorn, and in the 30th year and the 40th, bodily afflictions of the eyes and the feet; for the period of Cancer is 25, and of Mars, who was opposing, 15. And up to the 42nd the period of Mars and the rising time of Capricorn were productive, in which many causes came about; hence in such configurations one must foretell definitely, unless a ray of the benefics, running together with them, cuts off most of the bad things.

Another. The Sun and Venus in Libra, Saturn in Aries, Jupiter in Taurus, Mars and Mercury in Virgo, the Moon in Sagittarius, the Ascendant in Libra; the 3rd clime. In the 39th year he was exiled. The rising time of Aries is 20: Saturn was there, and the Sun, opposing it, 19; for both opposed their own exaltations. He also had climacterics in the earlier periods, but for comparison with the aforesaid nativity (for he is his brother) we observed the 39th year; one must therefore marvel at nature, that it brought the periods together to the same point, although they were born in different climes.

Another. The Sun, Mercury, and the Ascendant in Sagittarius, the Moon in Cancer, Saturn in Leo, Jupiter in Capricorn, Mars in Aquarius, Venus in Scorpio; the 2nd clime. In the 34th year, the death of his wife, by the 19 of Leo and the 15 of Scorpio or of Mars himself; and both malefics enclosed Venus. In the 36th year, on account of the cause of his wife's death, as if she had been plotted against, he was about to be in danger, having been accused before the king, but he went into exile; for the 36 years are the rising time of Leo, and likewise of Scorpio, where Venus happened to be, overcome by Saturn. A more humane chronology was also about to come about in the 37th year, from the 12 of Jupiter and the 25 of the Moon in opposition. Many others too were productive in the past and future periods, but I thought it necessary to set out first those which I myself knew more precisely and with which I was personally acquainted.

Another. The Sun, Mars, and Venus in Sagittarius, the Moon in Libra, Saturn in Gemini, Jupiter in Virgo, Mercury in Scorpio, the Ascendant in Capricorn. In the 19th year, the violent death of his father, and he himself, suffering in his eyes, was blinded; and in the same year he went abroad and had a danger at sea; for the period of the Sun was productive, with Mars together with him and Saturn opposing. In the 20th year, by an oracle of the god, by a regimen and by ointments, he recovered his sight; for at that time Saturn was productive, with Gemini giving the 20, whence he also suffered many evils; and Virgo, with Jupiter present in it, signified the 20, or the 12 of Jupiter and the 8 of Venus in square make 20. The period, then, went to many planets, but those that were productive were powerful; while those present together or testifying are weaker for doing good or harm, but nevertheless they are strong, especially when, as we said before, they are in the sign, exaltation, or triplicity of a sect-partner. The benefics and the malefics, then, had the same power, being in cadent places, but Jupiter was more effective by sign and by the place of god and foreign lands; and besides, if they are found in signs of equal rising or of the same zone, they are strong as by testimony, especially when the signs are found to be angular or productive.

Another. The Sun, Jupiter, and the Ascendant in Cancer, the Moon in Sagittarius, Saturn in Gemini, Mars in Taurus, Venus and Mercury in Leo; the 3rd clime. Having served in the army in a distinguished rank, he fell into an accusation in the 38th year and was cast down from his rank. For the rising time of Taurus, 23, and the period of Mars, 15, were productive: they make 38; but the sextile side of Saturn and Venus is also 38. From the 37th year he endured envies and adversities; for the Moon signified the 25 and Sagittarius the 12: they make 37, with Saturn opposing; but also Cancer 25 and Jupiter 12, whence he obtained a little help. In the 39th year, having made his defence and his entreaty, he was not able to set anything right; for Mercury, being in Leo, allotted the 20, and the sign the 19, but having been overcome by the planet bringing about the cause, he was weaker. Besides, Saturn was about to begin another adversity: the rising time of Gemini 28 and of Sagittarius 12: they make 40; in these periods too, then, he was on journeys abroad and suffered betrayals from a woman on account of writings, became indebted, and was grieved over slaves, some through estrangement, others through ruin and loss; and he himself was troubled in body. Whenever, then, while the periods belong to malefics, something is about to be revealed by the benefics, there will follow no complete loss or lack of reputation; for friendships and hopes are sown beforehand, through which the native becomes easily consoled. Likewise, if while the periods belong to benefics something malefic is about to run together with them, friendships are turned into enmities, and little by little a loss of livelihood comes about and an overthrow of reputation is prepared. And if the planets in trine or sextile or according to some other testimony are productive, and in the following period no other testimony runs together with them, the first will hold sway; or if later the same planets take over the period, they will show the same power of effects, holding sway in the same affairs or the same ranks, until another power becomes productive.

Another. The Sun, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury in Sagittarius, the Moon in Cancer, Mars in Virgo, Venus and the Ascendant in Libra; the 1st clime. In the 69th year he was deemed worthy of a governorship, and having become feared and of fine appearance and deemed blessed by many, he was envied, and, falling into popular tumults and disturbances, he held the office without completing it, being overtaken by painful illnesses and death; for at that time the rising time of Libra, 38 20', and that of Cancer, 31 40', were productive: they make 69 [sic]; and there the malefics happened to be; but also Saturn 30, the Sun 19, and Mercury 20 make 69, and again Virgo 38 20', Jupiter 12, the Sun 19 make 69. All the planets, then, were productive, and each of them brought about its own effect according to its own nature and configuration.

That most of the planets, or even all, can be effective for the effects in the same period can be seen from the following. We find in the cosmic state of the earth, every day and every hour, affairs coming about, such as births, deaths, inheritances, glories, overthrows, injuries, afflictions, and the rest, all the good and bad things that make up the life of men. For the cosmos, rolling round like a sphere and sending the emanations of the planets into the heaven, brings about nothing inactive or idle, but at every inclination of a point it renews many things in life, which each person, undergoing them now in one way, now in another, fulfils the aim of Fate. Many, then, who have occupied themselves with such matters have composed many books and many procedures; and indeed all have left behind for men great and many eternal [text uncertain] narratives. Just as those who are rich in appearance, but owe much, leave it to their heirs, who at first are carried along pleasantly, having laid hold of a few things and having a short-lived possession of many (for the pretext of purity [text uncertain] invests them with great conceit), but when they fall into lawsuits, toils, and adversities, they choose to be rid not only of the vainglorious inheritance but also of what they had pleasantly possessed, because of envy and care; in the same way those who have spent their time on many materials of treatises, not having cured a long-standing disease, have lost in addition their mind, their previous education, and their activity. But I, even if I am not fortified by a show of words or a multitude of books, am at any rate adorned with brevity and truth; so that my heirs may enjoy the fruit without lawsuit and envy, for as long a time as they remain, those who approach with toil and precision many of the effects, those who touch it lightly or without discipline few, yet more and greater ones than those who have occupied themselves with other procedures through wretchedness and a long time. Since, then, I myself have become the informer of a treasure, and have not only disclosed the places that guard it, but have also brought to light some of what is stored away, those who engage with it must also think along with me, so that by digging deep they may find what has been mystically buried. The one who has enrolled himself in my school, however, must know beforehand his own chart, what substance it possesses, and in the active periods set his hand to the effects, so that he may obtain benefit or testimony; but if he sets his hand to them in malefic periods, failing through ignorance or because he has left out some place, he will blame the method. Nevertheless, if one seeks with precision, he will not be cheated of the gift, or he will be deemed worthy of as much honour as one of the guardians of the times [text uncertain] signified according to the substance of the nativity. These things I have shown having tested them in my own affairs; so one must not blame the periods, neither me nor foreknowledge, but, having learned the magnitude of one's own nativity, one must campaign together with the times nobly and without grief (for one accomplishes nothing by living wretchedly and wishing to make oneself equal to the fortunes of others), and keep in mind such words as these:
