II. For What Reason the Ancients Represented the Five Planets, the Moon, and the Sun by Such Colours.
One must test the planets, of what sort they are. For just as, in the case of the painter's colours, each, according to the nature it possesses, is most vivid or most brilliant by itself, delights those who see it, and becomes useful for many purposes, but when it is mixed with another, it is muddied and altered, and neither is any longer what it was by nature nor has it kept the form of what was mixed with it, but has failed in both, broadly speaking, and has taken on a forced colour, blind and unpleasing; and sometimes, having had the good fortune to make a fitting mixture, it has produced a good blending and beauty (but nevertheless the artist forms the man through many and varied colours, presenting a shadow of the work and of the truth); so too the planets at times preserve their original nature when they are alone, but one, blended with another, will distil into it the peculiar quality of its nature as well. And so, curbing a man with the bridle, they lead him with grief, meanness, and a certain blending to the affairs of life, in which, having contended in varied ways and taken the crown of self-control, he becomes what he was not. Hence the ancients fittingly likened the planets to colours. They made that of Saturn black, since he is the sign of time; for the god is slow; hence the Babylonians also called him Phainon, since all things become manifest in time. That of Jupiter they made bright; for he is the cause of life and of good gifts. That of Mars, tawny; for the god is fiery, cutting, and effective; the Egyptians, indeed, called him Artes, since he is the one who takes away the benefics and life. The Sun they made most brilliant because of the pure and eternal light that is in him. Venus they made varied in body, since she is master of desire, which extends to many things both good and bad, and she alone seems to be lord of the many things accomplished in life, both suitable and unsuitable, since, having been allotted the circle after the middle zone of the Sun, which divides the rest, and receiving the manifold emanations both of the planets above her and of those below her, she brings about both desires and actions. That of Mercury they made pale, like bile; for he is master of intelligence, speech, and bitterness, whence those born under him are also like him in nature and in colour. The Moon they made air-like; for her course is unstable and irregular, and likewise the actions and the thoughts of those ranged under her. And so that we may not seem to repeat ourselves, their natures are set out in the first book.

III. Why the Malefics Seem to Be More Effective than the Benefics.
The malefics seem to have more strength than the benefics. For just as a drop of black and dirty colour poured into a bright substance of colours dims its beauty, while the brilliant mass is too weak to cover the small and staining drop, in the same way also in the case of the malefics: in whatever respects some people seem to be fortunate, in family, livelihood, body, reputation, beauty, or the rest (which is rare [text uncertain]), they convict them and become takers away of what they have acquired, overturning them with causes, or else they stain the nativities with injuries and afflictions. Good men, then, thinking that all think the same as themselves, behaving simply, trusting and doing kindnesses, are easily caught, even if they are not [simple], but nevertheless they are spoken of for their nobility. The wicked, thinking likewise that all are such as they are, and trusting neither their own people nor those they ought to, but grasping without reason, and further being deprived of what they have, produce much pleasure. For she preserves some men, even against their will, until she wishes to overturn them, some to height, others to the worst. Therefore many who prayed in vain for life, having been pierced through with evils and grieving at what has happened, blame death for delaying and contrive something against themselves or accept a violent end. By nature all men are mockers of one another and accusers of each other's faults, and rejoice greatly at evils and at the accusations of their neighbours, but repenting of what they themselves have done, they become advocates of the faults. Just as, then, preconceptions about whatever one judges present an impression of truth not only to those who have believed them but also to many others, who, even if they wish to do other things, are led by the deception, so too among those who have constructed tables, some that are easy and attractive are accepted as true, and to these the ignorant betake themselves; while the natural and precise ones are passed over and condemned, either through envy or because of the crookedness of their approach. Hence one must, having tested what is precise, attend to the natural theory, even if only approximately. For Apollinarius too, having worked on the phenomena according to the ancient observations and demonstrations of various clearings and spheres, and having brought blame against many, admits that he errs by one degree or even two. The matter of the obstruction is easy to grasp in the following way, as I myself also tried to establish the precise degree of the planet from the effects that had already come about, according to their natural activity, as the ancient also said. As the account proceeds, the matters themselves, set before your eyes, will make what is said clearer. When the degree has been found, then, it will also be possible to make declarations about the future with certainty; for the degree is hard to grasp, not ungraspable.

IV. On Entries.
The entries of the planets will be judged strong whenever those that are master of the periods enter upon the places, or are square or opposed to them, just as in the case of those who have obtained offices or governorships each, having made his entry at the hour allotted to him, is strong to save or to destroy, and no one can hinder his threat or his benefaction toward some, even if he happens to be very much greater in family, livelihood, or rank, but yields to the laws of the time, until he lays down the office; but when he has completed his period, handing over the governorship to another, he becomes weak for good or bad. The forecasts of effects of the transmissions and their tempering testimonies and co-presences with one another have been shown by us in what precedes; and these one must also use, each planet being effective according to its own nature and according to the period that falls to it, and indicating the kind of the effect.

V. On the Division of Active and Inactive Periods into 10 Years and 9 Months.
This division too, which had been cast aside obscurely and at random because its approaches were enigmatic, I have tested, discovered, collected, and appended, so that lovers of the beautiful, coming down through many routes to a single power of effect, may deify nature, considering that they have arrived at one place through many straight and difficult roads.
Let our reckoning, then, be to take as releaser, in diurnal nativities, the Sun, if he is well placed, and in nocturnal nativities the Moon, since, as has been written by us earlier in the dominations, one must judge to be releaser that one of the diurnal and nocturnal luminaries which is well placed. But if both luminaries fall out of the favourable places, the planet found after the Ascendant will allot the periods first, second the one lying after it, and the others in order.
For the sake of an example of the division of 10 years and 9 months, let the Sun be releaser: he himself will take 10 years 9 months, and after him in order the planet lying next in the nativity according to the revolution of the zodiac 10 years and 9 months, and one should give the yearly periods as far as the number of the years allows. Since one must take together with the yearly periods the periodic hours, days, and months of each, and compare the general master of the periods with the master of the months, of the days, and of the hours, and the cycles, how many there were, and which receives the cycle and the week from which. For in this way the periods, cycling round, even if they arrive at the same planets, do not do so from the same weeks or the same cycles; but one, fitted to another cycle according to the sequence of the period, alters the powers of the planets, and the same planet becomes at times the cause of goods, at times bad, according to the activity and the familiar or contrary disposition of the one that transmits and the one that receives. One must foresee the present and the future periods and examine them, and if they are passing to benefics, foretell the good, even if the malefic still holds sway for the least time; for the power of the malefic withers in advance through the beneficence of the receiving planet, which prepares beforehand various starting points: friendships, sympathies, introductions, prosperity, glories, benefits, the accomplishment of what is desired. Sometimes, indeed, having stained with secret or ineffable or hazardous activities, it has brought about good fortune, so that the natives are pleased, or bear moderately what they formerly were vexed at, and repent as having lost an inactive time in vain. Likewise also, whenever the periods pass from benefics to malefics, they are drawn into enmity, dishonour, betrayal, loss, and danger, and into sudden and unexpected causes and overthrows; hence many repent of not having defended themselves against their enemies in advance, but of having kept faith and sympathy in vain, and, not getting what they wish, they are pained at the goods of others and are subjected against their will.

Let there be for us a nativity by way of example, so that we may show the approach more briefly. The Moon in Pisces 18°, Venus in Aries, Jupiter in Libra, Saturn and the Ascendant in Sagittarius, Mars in Aquarius, the Sun at the beginning of Aquarius, Mercury in Pisces; for so they lay in order. We are seeking 52 years and, of the 53rd, Payni 15. Since, then, in this division the days and the cycles have their treatment with respect to 360 days, while the years of the nativity are with respect to 365¼, I took for the 52 complete years 5¼ for each: they make 273; and from Mechir 12 to Payni 15 they make 124; and together they make 397 days. I subtracted a cycle of 360; there remain 37 days. The Moon, then, since the nativity was nocturnal, being in the IC in a feminine sign, a triplicity of her sect-partner, and suitably placed, was judged releaser of the general periods. First, then, she took from the aforesaid years 10 years 9 months, then next Venus in Aries 10 years 9 months, then next Jupiter in Libra 10 years 9 months, then next Saturn in Sagittarius 10 years 9 months: they make 4 cycles, 43 years. After them in order follows Mars: his cycle is 10 years 9 months, to the completion of 53 years and 9 months. Since, then, the yearly period exceeds the aforesaid period sought, I ran down to the monthly period and gave to Mars himself, the lord of the cycle, 15 months, adding them to the completed fourth cycle of 43 years in number; and it became 44 years 3 months. Then to the Sun 1 year 7 months, then to Mercury 20 months, then to the Moon 25 months, then to Venus 8 months, then to Jupiter 12 months: and they make 51 years and 3 months. Next Saturn takes 30 months, to the completion of the cycle of Mars of 53 years and 9 months; since, then, this period too exceeds the aforesaid one, I resolved it into days as follows: up to Jupiter, 51 years 3 months were collected; I took the remaining days of the 52nd year, 270, and of the 53rd, 360, and of the 54th year 37 days: and together they make 667 days of Saturn, who receives from Mars. Of these he transmitted to himself and to the planets lying next in order 1 cycle of 129 days; then he yielded the 2nd cycle to Mars, likewise 129, and Mars allotted to each its own days; the Sun took over the 3rd cycle from Saturn and allotted 129 days, the 4th Mercury, and the 5th the Moon, who allotted 129 days. There remain 22 days of the 6th cycle, which is Venus'. She allotted, then, to herself 8 days, then to Jupiter 12 days; the remaining 2 days, up to the day sought, are Saturn's.
The general chronocrator of the years, then, was Mars, having received from the Moon; that of the months Saturn, having received from Mars; and that of the days Venus, having received the cycle from Saturn. In the 52nd year, then, there was the grievous death of his wife, and precarious illnesses and losses followed for him; and in the aforesaid days the native was condemned, having a lawsuit on behalf of a woman and against a woman concerning matters of the dead and old affairs, and he was hard pressed by greater persons and came near to danger, and took on grief from his own people or from strangers, so as to fall into despair, and he was entangled in other affairs, both precarious and costly. For Saturn still held sway over the period, being in the Ascendant contrary to sect and overcoming the Moon, the releaser, and Mercury; hence very many forgeries followed, false statements, deceptions, very many expenses, and precarious illnesses.
