THE ANTHOLOGIES OF VETTIUS VALENS OF ANTIOCH, BOOK VI
PREFACE.
Every science and art is pleasing according to the activity and understanding of the one who takes it up, or according to a bodily disposition that is suited or unsuited to that disposition. Hence many people blame and mock their neighbours because they have not shared in the same activity, although it is impossible and of no benefit for all to know the same things; but each, thinking that he possesses [text uncertain] his own particular good, happens to think, and seems to think, best. For often someone is found to be skilful and methodical in the undertakings of his affairs and successful, even if he happens to be unacquainted with letters; while the very well educated man is easily caught, as being inexperienced in sufferings, betrayed by his simplicity and his lack of management; and he, grieving, considers the pursuit of education vain and judges the ignorant man to be happy. These are the works of Fate and Fortune, who, coming upon men silently and unspeakably, make some blessed and others wretched, without reason and unfittingly. And so life, travelling through deception and villainy, increases some things, glorifies them, and leads them to prosperity and prominence, so that many become lovers of such things, while others it grieves, destroys, withers, and carries over into oblivion, danger, and hatred; and having turned some to the arts and sciences most hateful to them, it has fitted to them an unrepentant judgement, activity, and fortune. All these things are accomplished and come about with pleasure, harmony, and grief, according to the changes of the times and the cycles of the periods.

PREFACE.
序言。

I have written this preface, then, priding myself on the heavenly theory poured upon me by the daemon, which is now dishonoured and driven away, though it is older and governs all things in life, without which nothing is or will be; and once it seemed to have a name that excited envy, when those before us boasted of it and were deemed blessed. I am grieved, then, and I envy the ancient kings and tyrants who were devoted to such matters, since I was not fortunate enough to live in the same times as those who possessed the aether and the inquiry freely and without envy. For they pressed on to such a degree of desire and virtue that, leaving behind the things on earth, they walked in heaven with immortal souls and set themselves to divine and sacred judgements, as Nechepso too testified, saying: "It seemed to me that all night long toward the air [lacuna] and a cry from heaven rang out to me, whose flesh was wrapped about with a dark-hued robe, holding out darkness," and so on. For who would not judge this theory to surpass all others and to be the most blessed, in which the ordered courses of the Sun, entering upon the turnings by the addition and subtraction of numbers, signify in advance the changes of the seasons, risings and settings, days and nights, the cold and heat of the seasons, the good temperings of the air; and further, one can see the irregular courses of Mene, her inclinations and retreats, her increases and decreases, her height and depth, the motions of the winds, applications and separations, eclipses and shadowings, and all the rest? From these, it seems, are constituted the things on earth, in the sea, and in heaven, and the beginning and end of all that is born. And the courses [text uncertain] of the other five planets, their unstable movements and their varied phases: although they are irregular and are called wanderers, they possess a fixed nature and through ordered cycles and periods return to the same places.

At present, however, the tracking out and setting right of affairs are dimmed and wither in advance through fear, and the mind, refusing and being unsteady in its reasoning, does not remain with the same things, but, leaping now here, now there, takes up again its former forgetfulness. And one who is of good purpose and a lover of the beautiful easily takes up hesitation and chooses ignorance rather than dangerous virtue; but nevertheless in all men desire prevails and, even when chastised and grieved, remains with the same things. As for me, neither the varied races of horses and the swift stroke of the whip have given me wings, nor have the rhythms of dancers and pipes, and the vain charm of the Muse and of effeminate song delighted me, nor whatever at times draws in the listeners by trickery or mockery; nor indeed have I shared in harmful or profitable activities divided between pleasure and grief, nor have I had loathsome and burdensome [lacuna]; but having engaged with the divine and venerable theory of the heavenly things, I wished to purify my character of all wickedness and every defilement and to leave my soul immortal. Hence the divine seemed to converse with me, and I acquired a mind sober for the inquiry. Since, then, I have composed many marvellous things that can persuade those who engage with them, beyond the ancients, and considering that the ancients set out many methods that were hard to solve and enigmatic, I have of necessity set out first in this treatise secret and ineffable methods concerning active periods and concerning what will be. For in this way the science, appearing easy to grasp and supported by the truth, will drive away hatred, and, having shown much change of mind, will be proclaimed sacred and venerable. And if it seems that the same things are often spoken of, it makes no difference; for some things I composed while engaging with what had come before, because of the suddenness of desire and discovery (for the writer is inspired, especially concerning these matters, and seems to converse with god), and others deliberately, so that if any envy should run up and damage our treatises, they may be found written in other places too.

I. On Active and Inactive Periods according to the Interval by Degree and the Application of the Periods.
The division of the periods according to the forecast of effects by sign and in the broad manner has been shown by us in what precedes; but now we must speak of the interval by degree and of application, which I hinted at before; and experience has led me on to make it clear in addition. In every nativity, having placed the planets precisely, one must take the period by degree, from the treatise of the perpetual tables, from the degrees of each planet to whichever one wishes, whether it is near or far, according to the succeeding time and the order of the signs, up to the meeting by degree with another planet; and having added up the number of the degrees, one must arrange them into the periodic hours and days, months, and years of each planet, and, according to the period completed, foretell the effects of the planets, both from their own natural activity and from the forecast of effects of the transmissions to each. And if the number collected is less than the period, one must examine how much the remainder is and foretell that the effect will come about after so much time; but if it exceeds, one must subtract the total and again count off the remainder from the releasing degree and examine whether the rays of any planets incline toward the degree, either natally or by entry; for in this way exceptional and great effects usually come about.

For often, when the broad division shows nothing, [one must] also, after the total, bring down the remaining period into a smaller number of months and days, and, fitting the totals by cycle, count off up to the period sought; besides, the varied releasings and adhesions of the benefics and the malefics reveal varied, successive, and easily changed effects. For one can see many who in one period experienced many affairs, the releasings having fallen together all at once, or having been productive according to the harmony of the periods sought; others had no change at all of good or bad but remained in the same state; some, having been glorified or having advanced to unsurpassable fortune according to their original foundation, and having been deemed blessed by many, fell into death or danger; others, having come into a harsh circumstance of the time, or having failed in their livelihood and expecting no good hope but grieving in vain, ran back again to the same fortunes or even acquired a greater show. For sometimes a transmission falling in with an eclipse and showing a great threat has been dimmed by the period, in harmony with it, of another, beneficent transmission. Likewise the transmission of the benefics too is hindered by another, injurious cause; and the total numbers by degree remain the same from the beginning and are counted off in cycles as far as the period sought extends. In the case of the releasings of action and of the year, the divisions fall together into the same places or planets according to certain harmonious numbers and reveal in advance the meanings of the effects; but in this method, blended now in one way, now in another, according to the progression of the periods, it alters affairs and becomes the cause of good or bad things. One must, then, pay sober attention to the numbers and examine the angles, the succedent and the cadent places, and the signs, whether they have been made familiar by the presence of the planets, and the risings and settings, the sects, and the rest, as many as have been shown in the books composed before, so that we may not talk at length; for I have not composed these discourses for the ignorant or the uninitiated. One must also examine the entries at the moment; for they contribute much to overturning and to setting right affairs, especially when, by co-presence, testimony, or opposition, they enter upon the productive places or regard the master of the periods.

Nor must one reckon only the very degree on which the matter of the application has arrived, but also the other 3 on either side [text uncertain], as has been shown by us in what precedes. For from these the period will also be evident, whether it anticipates the effect or lingers on, just as in the case of eclipses one can see the time of their duration or of their clearing away. And one must examine whether the planet that transmits regards the one that receives in a familiar and productive way. The arrival of the application indicates what comes about for a short time, but it will persist until another, intervening, breaks the power of the former; and it allots to each of the planets its appointed period. For example, the Sun allots by sign 19 months, by degree 19 days. To the Moon is assigned also the monthly cycle, but naturally by sign 2 years 1 month, by degree 25 days; Saturn allots by sign 2 years 6 months, by degree 30 days. Jupiter by sign 1 year, by degree 12 days; Mars allots by sign 15 months, by degree 15 days; Venus by sign 8 months, by degree 8 days. Mercury by sign 20 months, by degree 20 days. And in this way the zodiac is brought to its end according to the period and cycle of each planet. Whenever, then, one makes a releasing from some planet to some planet, let him write down the numbers separately and which planet is toward which; for the numbers are not the same, nor are the powers of those that transmit and those that receive. For example, if one finds a transmission from Jupiter to Mars or from Mars to Jupiter, neither will the numbers of the periods be the same, because of the periods, nor the same effect; for it is better for Mars to transmit the period to Jupiter than Jupiter to Mars. When, however, the releasings of all the planets toward one another have been written down, one must compare them and foretell the effect, whether those of the malefics predominate or those of the benefics.

But someone will say: in the case of twin brothers the periods will be the same, since the same planets fall in the same degrees. But in such cases the Ascendant alone, having changed, has altered the angles and the fortune and condition of the native, and sometimes has even brought on the end. From these considerations one must reckon the choices both with respect to the arrangements of the angles and with respect to the testimonies to one another, even if they do not happen to be angular with respect to the cosmos; and besides, whether, at the degree on which it has arrived, a planet has the one overcoming or testifying to it at an angular interval, for example whether, when that degree is in the Ascendant, the degree of the other can be in the Midheaven according to the difference of the signs, or conversely in relation to another angle; for in this way the testimony will be strong.
One might liken this method to the testimony of the white and black pieces; for life is a game, a deception, and a festival. For certain contentious men, contriving cunning tricks against one another, moving the pieces along many lines, set them down in certain squares, challenging them to fight in front. And as long as the place is unobstructed, the piece moves unhindered according to the will of the one who moves it, and flees and stays, pursues and is drawn up opposite, and wins and is beaten in turn; but when it is hemmed in by its opponents in the manner of a net, having its lines without outlet and being caught in between, it is lost. And so each of the two brings about, the one pleasure and delight, the other mockery and grief that does not last; for the one who has suffered the distress, having before long taken up joy again by some method, hands back the weight of grief in turn to the one who had handed it over. Let the same be understood also of the power of the planets. For as long as a benefic holds sway over the periods with no malefic carried along beside it, being active, healthy, well provided, and successful, it proclaims the sufferer fortunate, confident, and intelligent, even if he happens to be without education; and, though not worthy of the good fortune poured upon him by the time, priding himself and exulting in what he possesses and not considering the changes of the times, he sends painful griefs upon many. But when a malefic in turn holds the period, being inactive, sickly, hard to combat, and full of adversities, so that in addition to his evils the sufferer is proclaimed feeble, timid, and villainous, even if he is worthy, and, shaping his hopes into despair because of the badness of the times, he is drawn back by reasoning toward the unexpected turns of Fortune and becomes noble and easily consoled. And when afflicted benefics hold sway over the periods, things will turn out both ways: harm with benefit, with glory public disgrace, overthrow, accusations, precarious fears, illnesses easily cured; hence the sufferers, mixed with pleasure and grief, go on having neither the bad nor the good in full.

One must compare the powers of the transmissions, which of them is stronger; for if that of the malefics is, the natives, failing of the good things they expected and having been beguiled by empty hopes, will take up painful griefs; but if that of the benefics is, they will come through with delay, hardship, adversities, and expenses, or else, with fears and deadly dangers, having escaped injuries, afflictions, and injurious causes, and considering this very thing a good gain, they will endure the punishment by compulsion. Let the complete manner of the transmissions be understood according to the substance of the nativity and according to the division of the general periods, as has been shown in what preceded; and one must examine whether the nativity is of a notable person, or of a middling one, or of one rising [text uncertain] to height, or of one being overthrown, or liable to lawsuits, and the rest; for the planets take on such power in the cycles of the periods as the foundation indicates.
The intervals at a distance, however, have a slower forecast of effects, while those nearby have a swift one. Some, accompanying the period, always bring about the like according to the transmission of the benefic or the malefic; having been productive for a short time, they have indicated advancement, trust, benefit, blessedness, and benefaction, and honour; but when the interval increased, and another malefic received the period in turn, it has gone on, through accusation and envy, to overthrow, dishonour, and misfortune, or even to sudden danger. Sometimes, in certain cases, having run together for a long time, when a benefic again received, it has brought about a restoration of fortune and rank. One must also compare the arrivals with the degree of the Ascendant; for from these the climacteric periods, those of sickness, of injury, and of danger are grasped, and besides, the healthy, pleasant, lovely, and agreeable periods, according to the presence of the benefics and the malefics. For in this way the soul, being untroubled and strong, seems to think and do what is fitting, extends itself to many things, becomes beneficent, and is well spoken of and deemed blessed, and the body too is comforted. From these I suppose that men are, in general, good and wicked according to the time, which the natural philosophers keep as their original judgement. But whenever the soul is afflicted, being ensnared it becomes senseless; for even if it is understood to be much hated, villainous, and wicked, and frenzied, thinking contrary things, so as even to contrive something dangerous against itself, and being so weighed down, not enduring to the end the period of life that is adverse to it, being disgraced by the distress, it separates from the body and travels with the daemon that compelled it, carried wherever he wishes.
