XII. Climacterics in Another Way, as Critodemus Makes the Releasing from the Moon.

For example, the Sun in Aquarius, the Moon in Leo, Saturn in Cancer, Jupiter in Gemini, Mars in Scorpio, Venus in Aries, Mercury in Pisces. The 12 years, then, belong to the interval of Mars, by 4; the climacteric is simple, for four times 4 is 16; for square numbers are simple, while oblong numbers are composite. The 18th, toward Venus, is composite, from twice 9: the 2, then, is in Virgo, but in Virgo there is no planet; in the 9th is Venus. If there were also some planet in Virgo, it would return together with her, because also in Capricorn 10 [text uncertain]. And since 3 times 6 is likewise 18, and also 6 times [text uncertain]: but there is no planet either in Libra, the third, or in Capricorn, the sixth. Again, the 20 is composite: for four times 5 is 20, and likewise five times 4. Mars in Scorpio is productive; in the 5th, Sagittarius, there is none. The 21 has 3 times 7: in Libra none, in Aquarius the Sun; so it is toward the Sun. The 24 has four times 6: in Scorpio again Mars, but in Capricorn none. The 25 has a square, simple number; but there is none in Sagittarius. The 27 is made up of 3 times 9: by 3 there is none, only Venus by 9. The 28th is by 4 toward Mars and by 7 toward the Sun. The 40th has 4, 10, 5, and 8, and is in accord with Mars by the 4 and with Mercury by the 8. The 44th is toward Mars and Jupiter. Sometimes even more planets will return together: for example, in the case of the 40th, just as Mars is in the 4th and Mercury in the 8th, if there were some planet also in the 10th and in the 5th, it would return together with them.

He says that what happens becomes stronger and more manifest if the number of the years is proper to the planet that is in accord with the interval, for example as follows: the 3 belongs to Saturn, the 5 to Venus, the 7 to Mars, the 8 to Mercury, the 9 to Jupiter, the 13 to the Moon, the 18 to the Sun. If, then, this number and the interval fall together upon the same planet, it becomes productive in a productive period; but if the year does not fall together upon one of the planets of the interval that leads to it, it is unproductive in an unproductive period. And if no productive interval is found in the intervening years, one must use the first until another is found. For example, in the aforesaid chart, the 28th is toward Mars and the Sun; the 29th has no interval; the 30th has 3, 5, 6, 10, and 1 [probably: 15] [text uncertain], and these signs; the 31st again does not fit any interval. These years will be governed by Mars and the Sun, which were productive in the 28th year, up to the 32nd, of which Mars by 4 and Mercury by 8 return together.

Let there be, for the sake of example: the Sun, Jupiter, and Mars in Cancer, the Moon in Libra, Saturn in Sagittarius, Venus and Mercury in Leo, the Ascendant in Gemini. He died in the 54th year; for it was the 18th cycle of Saturn, the sixth of Jupiter, and the third of the Sun: a joint return of these. The Sun and Jupiter were also found in the death-bringing month, that is in Sagittarius; besides, the Sun, Jupiter, and Mars, from the place of death, transmitted the 54th year to Saturn in Sagittarius: so the transmission was harsh. In every nativity, then, it seemed best to make the releasing of the climacterics not only from the Moon but also from all the planets, from which both the death-bringing periods and the harassments of livelihood will be understood. And if the periods of life run together according to the aforesaid choices, the climacteric will follow unfailingly; but if the substance has an interval, while a climacteric period falls together with it, it will be fulfilled in matters of action and the starting points of livelihood, for example: loss of reputation, overthrows, acts of violence, condemnations, shipwrecks, lawsuits, detentions, exiles, fears, losses, penalties, sudden dangers, abuses, robberies, and the other things that become causes in the life of men, injuries, afflictions, and mutilations, burnings, cuttings, illnesses, precarious plots. And if the planets that bring the climacteric, returning together, are found at the nativity to be opposing, or are regarded by malefics and have fallen contrary to sect, they will indicate the period as precarious and troubling; but if they have a familiar configuration, they will dim the onset of the causes and make the climacteric milder. The transmissions or receptions from signs of equal rising will also be judged strong, for example from Aries into Pisces, from Taurus into Aquarius, from Gemini into Capricorn, from Cancer into Sagittarius, from Leo into Scorpio, and from Virgo into Libra; and likewise the reverse.

These things, then, having tested them with sober reasoning and anxious troubles, we have set out with much toil for those at least who have sense, just as the ancients too, who were occupied with these matters, used to do, being able to liken themselves to them and to share their experience. But now one of those who adulterate the science, with embellished words and varied procedures of methods, might easily persuade not only those uninitiated in the theory, but also those who boast somewhat or who stand in great repute, because of the incomprehensible nature of their sorcery and daring. For such a man, not judging his failures to be adversities, prospers through his boldness, having no blush as a proof of his ignorance, but, as if wearing a tragic or a comic mask, he walks the stage, possessing the manner of deception rather than of truth. But the one who proceeds from doctrines and theorems, not wishing to throw away his learning of many years, leaning on experience as on a staff, speaks slowly and fearfully and dies inwardly in his mind, reckoning failure to be worthy of exile and death, and success to be the toil-worn heart of virtue. This happens in the case of those who are ignorant or who do not bring the time or the hour with precision; hence those who especially wish to hear with certainty about what is and what will be ought, having judged what sort of men the practitioners are, to strive together with them earnestly and to confess some of their affairs, so that the forecaster, having grasped the exact arrangements of the angles or also some places of power from numbers and from method, may make his declaration about what is. For often, as I said before, not only they themselves but also their parents, by giving false hours, wrong the science; for I myself too found this out from my own begetters. But they do not do this, wishing to hear in an instant about the things they desire and things not tempered together, and to obtain impossible things through some secret villainy; hearing from the ignorant and doing eagerly what is not lawful, being pleased for the moment, they reward the enemies with praise and honours, while they speak ill of the dignified and experienced as being unable either to make declarations so easily or to act with precision, not knowing that the affairs of each nativity are grasped with much toil and inquiry. Afterwards, having failed of what they expected and repenting precariously and painfully, they not only bring blame against those who deceived them, but also proclaim the science to be without existence and consider those who practise it as enemies. And it happens that because of a few who are unworthy of the science, many are dishonoured.
