IX. What Is the Reason Why the Same Effects Do Not Come About through the Twelve-Year Period, but at Times, when Good Things Are Expected, Bad Things Have Happened, or Conversely Good Things instead of Bad, and Sometimes, Even when the Division Falls in Empty Signs, Great Good or Bad Things Have Happened.

One must foresee the past, the present, and the future periods and compare them, whether they arrive from active periods at inactive ones, or from malefics at benefics. For often someone who had a time liable to lawsuits or full of fear because of the chronology of the malefics was condemned, but afterwards, when the benefics took over in turn and the general chronology showed the nativity to be not easily overthrown, a restoration of both his reputation and his livelihood came about through another defence, and his substance advanced to a greater fortune. Whenever, then, the nativity is carried toward a general defeat and the periods run together, various accusations, judgements, losses, and enmities are prepared beforehand, until that cause arrives which had to come about. Likewise, if an occasion of good arises in the course of the periods, friendships, introductions to greater persons and their sympathies, inheritances, bequests, and gifts are prepared beforehand; whence those who were without reputation and weaker in respect of their causes come to be held young [text uncertain], prudent, and lovable through the bounds of good fortune, while those who are very brave and educated, but condemned by their original foundation, being thought harsh, cowardly, and inactive, are oppressed by their inferiors and, nobly enduring their lack of reputation, yield to the laws of Fate. We find also in the case of nativities of governors that, before they have fulfilled the time of their office, they make their changes by succession to others, some to what is more glorious and beneficial, while others linger on toward the opposite and to ruin; whence for some evils accrue for their good and their safety, while for others what seemed good afterwards becomes the cause of evils.

For Fate has laid down for each person an unchangeable working of effects, having walled it about with many causes of good and evil, through which two self-begotten goddesses, Hope and Fortune, acting as her ministers, hold sway over life, and by compulsion and deception allow men to bear what has been laid down. The one of them is manifest to all, proving herself through the outcome of the effects, at times good and blessed, at times sullen and savage; for some she raises up that she may cast them down, others she hurls into lowliness that she may raise them up more splendidly. The other is neither sullen nor cheerful, but, always hidden, she goes about everywhere unnoticed and, smiling upon all like a flatterer, she points out many choices of good things which cannot be grasped; deceiving most people, she holds them fast, and they, though wronged and having become followers of pleasures, are drawn back again by her, and hoping, they believe what they wish, but they meet with what they do not expect. And if ever she grants some firm expectation, she abandons it and goes off to others, and she seems to be with all while remaining with none. Hence those who are inexperienced in foreknowledge, or who do not wish to engage with it at all, are led about and plundered by the aforesaid goddesses and, enduring every punishment, are chastised with pleasure. Some, attaining part of what they expected and gaining greater confidence, await firm and fine outcomes, not knowing how easily overthrown and precarious the reverses are; others, condemned in their judgements not for a season but for ever, having handed over their soul and body as a surrender to their desires, dishonoured and shameless, or wholly unable to attain anything, remain in subservience to unstable Fortune and deceiving Hope. But those who have occupied themselves with the foreknowledge of the future and with the truth, having acquired a soul that is not enslaved and is free, despise Fortune, do not persist in Hope, and do not fear death, but live untroubled, having trained their soul beforehand to be courageous; they neither exult at good things nor are humbled by bad ones, but are content with what is present. Not longing for impossible things, they bear with self-control what has been laid down, and, having become estranged from every pleasure or flattery, they become soldiers of Fate. For it is impossible for anyone by prayers or sacrifices to overcome the original foundation and to fashion for himself another according to his wish; for what has been given will come about even if we do not pray, and what is not fated will not happen even if we pray. Just as actors on the stage, following the scripts of the poets, play their parts becomingly, at times as kings, at times as robbers, at times as rustics, commoners, and gods, in the same way we too must play the parts with which Fate has invested us and adapt ourselves to the fortunes of the times, even if we do not agree with them. And if anyone is unwilling, "he will become base and suffer this very thing." If anyone pays heed to the instructions and general chronologies composed by me, he will find everything in due order; but if he has looked into some parts and has not learned the causes or the other solutions, he will pass judgement of praise and blame alike; and if he does not engage with them at all to obey [text uncertain], such a man will be refuted as ignorant and undisciplined by men who are lovers of the beautiful and more self-controlled.

One must also know beforehand, according to the natural reckoning, that the same things are not given to all, nor are they of benefit to all:

"For to one the god has given the works of war,

to another dancing, to another the lyre and song,

and in another's breast far-seeing Zeus places a mind

that is noble, and many men have the benefit of it,"

as the writer also says. For not all men have thoughts or actions like those of all other men. These things we have set out against those who dare to speak against the work, and for those who possess a nature gifted by the stars and are lovers of learning. Hence the substance of the science is sacred and venerable, as having been handed down to men by god, so that they too may have a share of immortality through foreknowledge; but the judgement as to whether it is true, or without substance, or hard to grasp, is tested by those who engage with it. Just as earthen jars that have received a single substance of costly wine from one estate, after a time, some give back the deposit to those who entrusted it full and pleasing, with pleasure and delight, while others, having diminished the bulk of the measure and not being strong enough to bear it up, after the finest part has boiled over, neither changed in respect of the pleasure nor refused the taste of the substance, but failed in both, while still others, neither holding out for a time nor preserving their nature, turned at once (as one can see the like in the case of other plants too: for from one tree one fruit is gathered sweet and ripe, another hard and wild, another bitter and rotten or harmful to those who use it), in the same way are the minds of those who engage with the science. For the one who has pursued his studies with eagerness and perseverance has acquired the pleasure to the end; but those who are without natural aptitude and unlearned, having made their entrance with the tips of their fingers and not having stayed long because of their impatience, nor having studied under lawful guides, have brought a proof of their lack of education against themselves and blame against the writers of treatises.

Leaving aside what concerns plants and substance, let us come down to the human race and examine it. From two natures, from the same father and the same mother, many children are born, but they do not possess a nature like that of the seed or of their sympathy toward one another; carried along by an unlike fortune through their foundation, some, brought up decently and nobly, bring glory to their family and become blessed, and through their own love of the beautiful construct works and temples and become pleasing to the crowds, and leaving behind the offspring of children and statues, they are glorified while living, and when dead they are deemed worthy of eternal fame. Others, having become most hateful not only to their parents and kinsmen because of a depraved character, but also to those not related to them, have turned many away from begetting children; and others, pursued by nature and by god, have endured a just punishment and have come to a most shameful or violent end. And this, I think, is what will happen to those who speak against the science.

In order to put the end to the treatise begun at the outset, let us append the natural and compulsory divisions. For sometimes, when through the aforesaid twelve-year period the transmission falls into empty places, exceptional things happen; or again, when the benefics alone seem to have the time, causes of evils come about as well.

Let there be, by way of example: the Sun and Mercury in Aquarius, the Moon in Scorpio, Saturn in Cancer, Jupiter in Libra, Mars in Virgo, Venus in Capricorn, the Ascendant in Virgo. There will be, then, from Mars and the Ascendant to Jupiter 2, from Jupiter to the Moon 2, and from Venus to Mercury and the Sun 2; so the 2nd, the 4th, the 6th, the 8th, and the 10th years belong to them. Then from Mars to the Moon 3, from Saturn to Mars 3, and from the Moon to Venus 3; so the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, and 15th belong to them. Then we draw from Saturn to Jupiter 4, from Jupiter to Venus 4, and from the Moon to the Sun and Mercury 4; so the 4th, 8th, 12th, and 16th belong to them. Then from Mars and the Ascendant to Venus 5, from Jupiter to the Sun and Mercury 5, and from Saturn to the Moon 5; so then the 5th, the 10th, the 15th, and the 20th belong to them. Then again from Mars and the Ascendant to the Sun and Mercury 6, and from the Sun and Mercury to Saturn 6; so then the 6th, the 12th, the 18th, the 24th, and the 30th belong to them. Then from Saturn to Venus 7, and from Venus to Saturn 7 [corrected: Kroll has a lacuna here and prints this pair in the next sentence as “from Venus to Saturn 8”]; so the 7th, the 14th, the 21st, the 28th, and the 35th belong to them. Likewise also from Saturn to the Sun and Mercury 8, and from Mercury and the Sun to Mars and the Ascendant 8; so the 8th, the 16th, the 24th, the 32nd, and the 40th belong to them. Then from the Sun and Mercury to Jupiter 9, from Venus to Mars and the Ascendant 9, and from the Moon to Saturn 9; so the 9th, 18th, 27th, 36th, and 45th belong to them. Then from the Sun and Mercury to the Moon 10, from Venus to Jupiter 10, and from Jupiter to Saturn 10; so the 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, and 50th belong to them. Then from Venus to the Moon 11, from the Moon to Mars and the Ascendant 11, and from the Ascendant and Mars to Saturn 11; so the 11th, 22nd, 33rd, 44th, and 55th belong to them. Then from the Sun and Mercury to Venus 12, from the Moon to Jupiter 12, and from Jupiter to Mars and the Ascendant 12; so the 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th, and 60th belong to them. And by adding on, one will find the number as far as one wishes.

This number is compulsory and doubles itself on account of the nature of the arrangement; but in many cases the one through the twelve-year period, which will be set out in the second part, seems more natural and more authoritative. One must therefore first attend to that one, count off the twelves, and seek the remainder; and if it is found to have a transmission, one should use that one rather; but if it is not found, we shall of necessity come down to this one. For example, if we are seeking year 20, having subtracted the 12 we seek the remaining 8, whether it has a transmission. If, then, it is not found, we seek the intervals by 4 and shall use the others as 8 (for the transmission is more effective) [text uncertain], or again those by 2; for the numbers that make up 8 are 2 and 4: for twice 4 is 8, and again four times 2 is 8. And in this way too the transmissions will be effective. Then the 21st and the 19th indicate by opposition: for if we subtract the 12 from the 19, 7 remain, and if we make 3 times 7, it becomes 21. And for the 27th the transmission by 3, by 9, and by 7 will also be effective. If the 24th is found to have a transmission, I shall use it, since those by 3, the 13th, the 25th, and the 37th, end in the same sign. If, then, a planet is found lying upon itself, it will also have transmitted to the sign; but if, while it lies there, other planets happen to be in the following sign, it will rather transmit to them. For example, in the nativity set out above, in the 13th and the 25th years Mars transmits to Jupiter and Jupiter to the Moon; but if no planet is found in the following sign, they will have transmitted the year to themselves. And since each number seems to be natural according to its own harmony, for the subtractions of the cycles we shall use above all, first those by 12, because of the 12 signs, and then those by 7, because of the 7 planets. If, then, a transmission of the 12 is not found, so that of necessity it may come about from these (it seemed good to append this reckoning as well, being more natural), one should make the releasings by degree, according to meeting and casting of rays, from all the planets, and compare the forecast of effects of each planet with respect to each. For if the Ascendant, judged to be the releaser, or the Sun or the Moon, making their course according to the progression of the periods and arriving at the castings of rays or the degrees of the benefics or malefics, become the causes of good or bad things, and at times even bring on the end, how will not the power of the other planets all the more be strong for releasing and casting of rays? Or do we assign the authority of the releasing to the three alone, and pass over the rest as though they were always stationary and fixed, existing merely for the sake of signs? Every planet, moving according to its own course of the wind, will be productive of effects both good and bad.

These things I recommend having tested them myself from experience; for often, when no domination was properly found, nor any occasion of rulership, nor any other method showing activity, great and unexpected causes of good came about, and at times dangerous and deadly circumstances followed; and these I grasped from the releasing of the planets. For the malefics, having come by movement by degree upon the Ascendant or the Sun or the Moon, brought on the end, and upon the Midheaven or the important places, inactivity and troubling or dangerous causes; likewise also the benefics brought glories, prominence, and benefits, if the releasing of the substance is also found about the Sun or the Moon or the Ascendant and about the ruler. Concerning, however, the other starting points of affairs and the choices that come about concerning life, one must pay attention to the other releasings, testimonies, and castings of rays of the planets. For how will not Saturn and Mars, coming by releasing by degree upon the Ascendant or the Sun or the Moon, when there is a substance of years, bring about weakness and sudden climacterics, or the death of the father or the mother, or enmities of greater persons, or the overthrow of reputation, or precarious fears, and the rest, whatever their nature indicates? And upon the places and degrees of Venus, the deaths of a wife or of female persons, or enmities, disturbances, harassments in livelihood, censures, and shameful passions; upon those of Mercury, lawsuits and abuses on account of writings or money matters or secret affairs, or the deaths of brothers or kinsmen or slaves; and upon those of Jupiter, glories, inheritances, acquisitions, the begetting of children, advancements, and introductions to greater persons. Likewise each planet will be effective according to its own power and according to those lying upon it or casting rays to it; and in the productive or angular signs they will be more secure and stronger for the effect, but in the cadent places weaker. If, however, a planet is found retrograde, we shall make the releasing not in the order of the signs but in the upward direction; and having examined up to which degree it goes back, we shall compare which planet that degree can cast rays to at that time. For if it happens at present to be turned away from some planet or angle, but according to the chronology of its retrogradation, having come from one sign into another, it casts rays, it will be effective for good or for bad.

One must, however, examine the movements by degree from the treatise on the tables in accordance with the phenomena; for the general substances and chronologies are governed by these releasings. Hence most people, not knowing that affairs are brought to completion through many choices, suppose the science to be without existence, or unable to reach completion, or hard to grasp, having always occupied themselves with the power of a single method; but those who, with all precision, have introduced many choices of power and have used a new and natural method according to the choice that befits the nativity have acquired an easily grasped working of the effects. Just as foreign men coming down into certain cities, and especially into a royal country, make their arrival at different times in different ways and not by one road, but some arrive on foot from the ends of the earth, passing through desert places and hard roads and falling into fearful dangers, others easily and without danger, using highways, and others, often picturing death to themselves in the storms of the sea and the blasts of the winds, carry their purpose to fulfilment; and there is no rivalry among them, nor any prize set for a short or hard entry, but each, according to the working of the periods at that time, meets either with benefits and glory or with the things he purposed, or else, falling into other causes or being overthrown, loses his life as well; some remained there to their ruin, others to an unexpected benefaction, although they had been eager to make their departure as quickly as possible; in the same way we too must attend to the science in varied ways and come down to the effect as if making our way straight by many roads. For many and countless are the things that happen to men, which are constituted not through one method nor through one planet, but through many. And since in each nativity 12 places are signified, and from these and from the nature of the planets very many are found, one must observe the arrangements of the angles and the interchanges of the places; for often two places fall together in one sign, or an angular configuration also shows the character of a cadent place; and this happens in connection with the causes of the Ascendant.

For example, Gemini in the Ascendant, the Midheaven in Aquarius by degree: this place, then, will hold the topic of action, reputation, and children, and also that of foreign lands and god, since by sign it is found in the 9th from the Ascendant; and the transmission by 4 and 5 is found from it to the Ascendant to be productive, and the transmission from the Ascendant to it by 9 and 10 is productive. Likewise also the sign opposite Aquarius, that is Leo, which is the subterranean angle, will hold the topic of foundations, possessions, and parents, and also that of god, brothers, and foreign lands; and the transmission by 3 and 4 from the Ascendant to it will be strong, and from it to the Ascendant the one by 10 and 11. Let the like be solved in the same way also for the other signs, those of long rising, whenever the Midheaven falls in the sextile; hence if we examine the places by degree, or also the intervals of the planets, we shall not stumble. For example, Mars in the Ascendant in Virgo, the Moon in Scorpio in the IC, the Midheaven in Taurus; one must seek the 34th year. When two twelves are subtracted, 10 remain: the transmission from the Moon to Mars was strong, because of the angle, and also that from the Ascendant and Mars to Taurus, that is the Midheaven. For in that period the native was active in a foreign land and had friendships with greater persons, and on account of a female person he was in danger of perishing and fell into cuttings and bloodlettings; other transmissions too were productive in this period, but they did not reveal the causes. So, then, often, when the period is not suspected, causes of evils come about, or again, when it is not expected, great glories and benefits follow.
