III. On Inceptions.

第三章　论起事之盘。

As regards the current days, while the Moon is passing through the ascending node of the moment and the signs square and opposed to it, and especially through the same degrees, one must take care not to begin anything, not to sail, not to marry, not to petition, not to build, not to plant, not to form associations, nor to do anything at all. For what is done will be judged neither secure nor easy to bring to completion, but quickly repented of, incomplete, and harmful, or painful and not lasting. If anyone on these very days seems to have brought some matter to a conclusion, it will be overturned and will become troubled and harmful, or easily undone and offensive; for not even the benefics, when they happen to be in these places, will accomplish any complete good. Hence even without a nativity, if anyone watches the transits of the Moon at the moment in relation to the ascending node, he will not go wrong. And if you find someone else who has begun some matter while the Moon is moving through the ecliptic places, foretell that it will be incomplete, quickly repented of, and harmful. I myself, guarding against such days as far as possible and making the inceptions of actions or of friendships according to the chronology of the times, used to consider the inception free of regret and easy to bring to completion; but at times I went astray, and through the untimely visit or introduction of a friend, or when I had begun something under compulsion, I met with an outcome that was harmful and painful, or one of delay. Hence in every inception one must observe this: in the putting out to sea of fleets, in commands of camps and of wars, in advancement, in setting out, and in whatever else is accomplished in life. Nor is it useful to sacrifice to the god or to found temples; for neither will prayers be fulfilled nor will the god be worshipped, but he will be noised abroad as idle and ineffective; those who swear will perjure themselves, and pledges will not be fulfilled; nor will gifts to the crowds or costly buildings be well spoken of or lasting, but blameworthy and easily destroyed. Nor indeed are bodily treatments easily healed, but sickly and hard to cure, especially when the malefics testify to the places or the Moon is moving against them by degree; for when she is in the same sign, she will be effective only with delay and with certain hindrances; even so, however, she brings about insecure actions.

IV. On the Climacteric Signs.

第四章　论关口星座。

These signs, too, are climacteric: Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Aquarius. The years that come to be in these are dangerous; and when the Sun comes to be in them during these transmissions, the month too will be evident.

这些星座也是关口的：白羊、金牛、巨蟹、天蝎、水瓶。落在这些星座的年是危险的；当太阳在这些交付中来到它们时，月份也就显明了。

V. On the Counter-Nativity, for the Topic of Active and Inactive Periods.

第五章　论对照命盘，用于作为与无为之期的论题。

We shall of necessity make the counter-nativity; for it contributes much to the changes of the periods from moment to moment, at times confirming the powers of the effects, at times hindering them and indicating effects of its own. On the birthday in the current year, then, we shall calculate the planets precisely and find the Ascendant as follows. While the Sun is still in the natal sign, we examine when and at what hour the Sun comes to the degree of return, the very degree which it had at the nativity, and we shall say that that degree is in the Ascendant. If the return is found to be by day when the nativity is nocturnal, we shall compare the diurnal rulers and the lord of the term and of the Ascendant with the natal planets.

我们必须起对照命盘；因为它对时期随时的变化贡献很大，有时确认效验的力量，有时阻碍它们，并显示它自己的效验。所以在当年的生日，我们要精确地推算诸星，并这样求上升点。当太阳仍在本命的星座时，我们审视太阳在什么时候、什么时辰来到回归的度数，也就是它在本命时所在的那一度，我们就说那一度是在上升点上。若本命是夜生而回归被发现在白天，我们就把昼方的主星以及界主与上升之主同本命诸星比较。

VI. On the Productive Month and Day, from the Transiting Sun to the Moon at the Delivery, and the Equal Amount from the Ascendant.

第六章　论得力之月与日，从行运的太阳到分娩时的月亮，再从上升点量出相等的距离。

Concerning the productive month, the King held as follows: from the transiting Sun to the Moon at the delivery, and the equal amount from the Ascendant; and wherever it ends, one must examine the lord of the sign, whether it is in the productive signs, and compare the planets present in it or testifying to it, whether benefics or malefics. The days are taken from the transiting Moon to the natal Sun, and the equal amount from the Ascendant. Others, having learned the lord of the conjunctional degrees or of the full-moon degrees, speak of that month. Some also present this month as effective: for whatever configuration the Moon is found to have toward the Sun at the nativity, when she acquires the same configuration in transit she will reveal the month. For example, the Sun in Leo 5°, the Moon in Libra 26°: the interval from the Sun to the Moon is 81 degrees. When the Moon has moved this many degrees away from the Sun and has made the same configuration as at the nativity, she will indicate the month.

关于得力之月，王的主张如下：从行运的太阳到分娩时的月亮，再从上升点量出相等的距离；它在哪里终止，就必须审视那个星座的主，看它是否在得力的星座，并比较在其中或为它作见证的诸星，是吉星还是凶星。日则从行运的月亮到本命的太阳取，再从上升点量出相等的距离。另一些人得知合朔度数或望月度数之主后，就说那个月。也有些人把这样的月当作有效验的：月亮在本命中被发现对太阳有什么格局，当她在行运中取得同样的格局时，就会显示这个月。例如，太阳在狮子五度，月亮在天秤二十六度：从太阳到月亮的距离是八十一度。当月亮离太阳这么多度，作出与本命相同的格局时，她就会指示这个月。

To me, however, it has seemed rather from experience that the productive months are those in whose signs the divisions of the years take place. For when the Sun comes into those places, or into the signs square or opposed to them, it foretells the effect signified in the year or in the transmissions; and likewise Mars, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon, when they come into the aforesaid places by entry, will indicate it. We shall judge that place more effective for an effect in which the aforesaid planets, upon entering, make a phase; for then renewals or activities in affairs will take place. But if a planet passes through the sign having the same configuration it happened to have, no change or renewal will take place, nor the completion of an expected effect. The Sun, however, by passing through the places and arousing the powers of the chronocrators, becomes more effective.

然而在我看来，从经验出发，得力的月份反倒是那些年的划分所在之星座的月份。因为当太阳来到那些位置，或与之成四分、对冲的星座时，就预示这一年或这些交付中所象征的效验；同样，火星、金星、水星与月亮以进入来到上述位置时，也会指示它。上述行星进入时作某种相态的那个位置，我们判它对效验更有效；因为那时事务会有更新或活动。但若一颗行星以它本来就有的同样格局经过那个星座，就不会有变化或更新，所期待的效验也不会完成。然而太阳经过那些位置、唤起时主的力量，就更有效验。

VII. On the Productive and Inactive Day. This division of the days is true.

第七章　论得力与无为之日。这种日的划分是真实的。

Concerning the productive and inactive day, as follows. Multiply the full completed years of the nativity by 5¼, and, collecting the days from the birthday up to the day in question and adding them to the former, we cast out twelves, and count off the remainder from the Ascendant, giving one to each sign. Some examine the sign in which the count ends from the Moon's place of adhesion, whether it is productive or otherwise. One must pay attention to the Moon and to her inclination, how she is configured toward the sign. For if on the day in question the Moon testifies to the sign of her inclination, then in the productive signs the day will be good, notable, and beneficial; if both the day and the inclination of the Moon are found in the same sign, better still; but if the Moon or her inclination is turned away from the day, then in the productive signs the day will be middling and not wholly inactive, but in the others it will be painful and harmful or dangerous. One must also examine the lord of the day, how it is configured and by which planets it receives testimony, and whether it is in the same sign, or in a productive sign, or in one turned away; and also the planets by entry, how they lie toward the day or its lord; for according to the nature of each sign and planet the day will become evident. And if, in the sign to which one brings down the day, an entry or testimony of a planet takes place on that very day, the day is productive of good or evil according to the planets present. Likewise also, concerning whatever effects the year signifies, the day becomes effective for those things when it falls in the places of the transmissions or receptions, and in the signs square or opposed to them.

关于得力与无为之日，如下。把本命已完成的满年乘以五又四分之一，再把从生日到所问之日的日数收集起来加到前者上，我们去掉若干个十二，把余数从上升点数出，每个星座给一。有些人从月亮的黏附之处审视数终止的星座，看它是得力的还是相反。所以必须留意月亮与她的趋向，看她对那个星座成什么格局。因为若在所问的那一天，月亮为她趋向的星座作见证，那么在得力的星座中，这一天就会好、显著而有益；若日与月亮的趋向被发现在同一星座，就更好；但若月亮或她的趋向与这一日不相照，那么在得力的星座中，这一天就居中，并非全然无为，在其他星座中则令人痛苦、有害或危险。也必须审视日之主，看它成什么格局、受哪些行星的见证，是否在同一星座，或在得力的星座，或在不相照的星座；还有以进入而来的诸星，看它们对这一日或其主处在什么状态；因为这一日会按每个星座与行星的本性而显明。若在把日推到的那个星座中，恰在那一天有行星的进入或见证发生，这一天就按在场的行星而主吉或主凶。同样，关于这一年所象征的任何效验，当这一日落在交付或接受的位置，以及与之成四分、对冲的星座时，就对那些事有效验。

Let there be, by way of example, year 4 of Hadrian, Mechir 13, the 1st hour of the night; and let the inquiry be for year 20 of Antoninus, Phaophi 10. There are 243 days, and together they make 432. I subtract the 360; there remain 72. These I count off from the Ascendant, Virgo; the count ended in Leo. The day is in the cadent place; the natal lord, the Sun, was opposed to the day, for at the nativity the Sun was in Aquarius; and Mars by entry and the Moon were in Capricorn, turned away: the day was in suspense. It was also in the place of slaves: there was anger against a servile person. This method too is natural, according to the signs in which the Sun, upon coming into them, foretells the effect that occurs in the month.
