I. On the Place of Accusation.

第一章　论控告之位。

In the preceding books we set out the sects together with their solution; now in this one we shall further make clear other powerful places as well, and the keys suited to the division of the planets.

在前面几卷中，我们列出了各派学说及其解法；现在在这一卷里，我们要进一步讲明另一些有力的位置，以及适用于诸星划分的钥匙。

These things being so, it is necessary to test from experience yet another place, which I shall show without stint: it is the place of accusation, and a contributing cause of fears, dangers, and bonds. This place too is strong; it is taken by day from Saturn to Mars, by night from Mars to Saturn, and the equal amount from the Ascendant (others take the equal amount from Mercury). Wherever it falls, one must examine whether it is the sign of a malefic, or whether malefics are present in it or testify to it. For in this way nativities become precarious, dangerous, and liable to ruin; the nature of each planet and sign will supply the kind; but benefics, when present or testifying, will bring less of the evil, or an escape from the accusations.

It seemed better to use this method too: whenever the Sun or the Moon is found in sextile with Saturn or Mars by sign, the nativity is fearful and liable to accusation within 70 degrees, and in the hearing signs, especially at that time when one of them makes the transmission toward such a configuration. For example, if the Sun is so with Saturn or Mars, or the Moon; again, if Saturn or Mars is so with the Sun or the Moon; and even if both are not so in the same way, but one of them is found in sextile while the other, being turned away by square, trine, or opposition, makes a transmission or a reception toward such a configuration: for then the nativity will be thrown into turmoil and will be involved in defences at law, detentions, or confinements, or will hold suspicious charges concerning such matters and will live with a bad conscience. And if a benefic is present together with either of these or testifies in a familiar way, the native will have release from the fears or dangers, or a change for the better, though he will not remain untroubled. But if the configuration happens to be afflicted without the testimony of the benefics, he will be condemned, or will be in bonds, detention, or confinement. And if the substance is found to be great while such a configuration exists, at that time he will be anxious concerning his rank and his livelihood, will undergo accusations or betrayals, and will make his defence before an authority or a king; and if not on his own behalf, then on behalf of another, so that what belongs to fear and anguish may be brought about. So powerful is the place.

If the general periods and the years run together to the same point, the matter of accusation will be complete, with detention or ruin; but when the division is made according to the cyclical years, it will bring about fears and griefs. If an infant's nativity has such a configuration, one must speak of the fear as concerning the father or the mother, or concerning the masters, if the nativity is servile. Some, indeed, while still infants, come to be in detentions or prisons and pass their time in these places. If at that time a benefic enters upon the place or testifies to it, there will be a respite or a consolation from the evil; if a malefic, it will be worse; if both a benefic and a malefic, both. Besides, if the malefics are found opposing or squaring the Sun or the Moon, they cause fears and detentions; but if the nativity is found to be assisted by the testimony of the benefics or by the general substance, and detention does not come about, there will be an occasion for some other kind of detention or accusation: for example, military service, guard duty, sureties for loans, being bound up with condemned men or being set over such men, or, as usually happens with many, being made to attend upon certain persons for the sake of the law or of need and to suffer against their own choice, being unable to do what they wish, and seeming to be held fast under the authority of others and being punished in conscience; or, when travelling abroad or sailing, being detained somewhere, on islands or in desert places, or else attending in sacred places or temples. At times they are held fast by chronic afflictions, or by sacred diseases, divine possessions, sorceries, phantoms, shivering fevers, and the like. One must therefore make the judgement concerning these places with good understanding: whether the detention will come about for the sake of glory, or through necessity and some other injurious cause.

Let there be, by way of example: the Sun and Jupiter in Scorpio, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and the Ascendant in Libra, Saturn in Leo, Mars in Capricorn. Both malefics are in sextile with the Sun and the Moon. If, then, the luminaries had been without the co-presence of the benefics, one could have spoken of detention; but as it is, the configuration has become one of fine show and glory. For this man, being a soldier, at the age of 35 was placed over prisoners and a guardhouse, and in the prison he fell in love with a woman; on her account he incurred a troublesome accusation, but by making an outlay he escaped the danger. At the same time he also caught a runaway slave and put him in bonds.

举例来说，设太阳与木星在天蝎，月亮、水星、金星与上升点在天秤，土星在狮子，火星在摩羯。两颗凶星都与太阳和月亮成六分。所以，若两光没有吉星同在，就可以说是扣留；但实际上，这个格局变成了体面而荣耀的。因为这人是个兵士，三十五岁时被派管囚犯与一座守卫所，他在监牢里爱上了一个女人；为了她，他招来一场令人困扰的控告，但花了一笔钱，逃过了危险。同一时期，他还捉住一个逃走的奴隶，把他上了镣铐。

II. On the Climacteric Year, the Ecliptic Places, and Inceptions.

第二章　论关口之年、交食之位与起事之盘。

We must next speak, in due order, of the remaining matters for the completion of the treatise; now, of the climacteric year. The climacteric year is found from the reception or transmission of the malefics toward the luminaries and the Ascendant and toward one another, but in general as follows. One must always count off the years from the sign in the Ascendant; and if the current year ends in the conjunctional or full-moon sign, or in the signs square or opposed to these, the year is climacteric and troubled; and especially if, things being so, Saturn by transit is found in the four cadent places of the nativity and the substance concurs, death will follow, along with bodily sickness, haemorrhages, dangerous diseases or hidden pains, falls, and sudden dangers. Sometimes the climacteric coincides with the affairs of livelihood and with honours, the bodies being assisted by the testimony of the benefics.

Again, otherwise: from the natal Saturn to the lord of the conjunction or full moon, and the equal amount from the Ascendant; wherever it falls, when Saturn comes there or into the signs square or opposed to it, there will be death or a dangerous climacteric, bodily or concerning action. Likewise the climacteric year will also come about in the ascending node or the descending node, or in the signs square to them. And if, when the Sun is by transit in the ascending node or the descending node, or in the signs square to them, with a malefic regarding the Sun, someone then takes to his bed, the illness is precarious and dangerous. The crises of the intensifications or dangers will come at the time when the Moon passes through the same places of the ascending node.

又另一法：从本命的土星量到合朔或望月之主，再从上升点量出相等的距离；它落在哪里，当土星来到那里或与之成四分、对冲的星座时，就会有死亡或危险的关口，或在身体，或在作为。同样，关口之年也会出现在升交点或降交点，或与之成四分的星座。若太阳行运到升交点或降交点，或与之成四分的星座，而有凶星照看太阳，有人那时卧病，这病就不稳而危险。加剧或危险的危期，会在月亮经过升交点的同样位置时到来。

Since the place set out above, that is, the ecliptic place, has proved powerful, I propose a certain precaution to my readers: not that it is possible for anyone to decline the decrees of fate and act according to his own will; but I say that it is perhaps possible for those who apply themselves to this theory to break the evil in some measure. For the divine, wishing men to foreknow what is to come, brought the science into the light, through which each person, foreknowing what concerns himself, is made more cheerful toward the good and more courageous toward the bad. Since, then, some things to be guarded against are foreknown from the co-presence or testimony of the beneficent planets [text uncertain]; and likewise, when a benefic is able to provide something, if a malefic falls in with it or testifies, it will become a hindrance of the good; but if malefics or benefics are present or are configured without the testimony of others, the effect too will be certain. In this respect, then, those who are initiated into this theory and wish to foreknow will be benefited: so as not to toil with empty hopes, nor to take upon themselves a painful and sleepless torment, nor to long vainly for impossible things; or again, by bringing a certain eagerness to the beneficence of the moment, to attain what they expect. For a sudden good has often grieved like an evil, and a sudden evil has brought the greatest grief to those who had not trained the soul beforehand.

But, so as not to turn aside and arrive at another subject, one must examine in what sign the ascending node of each nativity has fallen, whether tropical, solid, or bicorporeal, and of which planet; and the power of the sign will be broken. We often find planets which are able to provide something, whether at the nativity or by entering upon these places, yet bring about nothing. And if they also make some phase against the ascending node or the descending node, they become causes of evils, especially if they are also found going back or setting. For the current year one must examine the ascending node of the moment, in which place of the nativity it has made its entry; for likewise it will break the power both of the sign and of its master. And especially if the same planets are found as chronocrators, they can provide nothing until they are separated from the place.
