XXXVI. On Injury and Suffering, with Examples, Sign by Sign: for Example, What Injury or Suffering Aries Produces, and the Signs in Order after It.

第三十六章　论伤损与病苦，附例，逐座而论：例如白羊造成什么伤损或病苦，以及其后依次的各座。

Since the ancients wrote obscurely about the topic of injury, we shall explain it further and more plainly. Some, attending to the bodily and psychic places set out below, and beginning the parts of the body in each person's nativity from the Lot of Fortune and the Daemon, declare the place of injury and suffering according to the presence of the malefics. For example, the Lot of Fortune is the chest, the 2nd the side, the 3rd the belly, the 4th the hips, the 5th the genitals, the 6th the thighs, the 7th the knees, the 8th the shins, the 9th the feet, the 10th the head, the 11th the face and neck, the 12th the forearms and shoulders. Sufferings are taken from the Daemon. The Daemon itself is the heart; the 2nd sign; the inner belly the 3rd, through which the seed is carried, and the place of the kidneys; the 4th the colon; the 5th the liver; the 6th the second belly; the 7th the bladder; the 8th the intestines; the 9th the place of the membranes of the brain, of the teeth, and of hearing; the 10th the gullet; the 11th the tongue; the 12th the stomach. These are shown consistently with Leo and Cancer, since the Moon is the fortune of the cosmos, and the Sun its mind and daemon.

So much for our predecessors; to us, from experience, the matter has seemed more precisely as follows. Let Aries in general signify matters concerning the head, the sense organs, and sight; this place, then, according to the solution we are about to give, produces headaches, dimness of sight, apoplexies, hardness of hearing, blindings, leprosies, lichens, loss of hair, mange, baldness, numbness, putrefactions, discharges of the respiratory passages, warts, fleshy growths, and whatever usually befalls the sense organs, the hearing, and the teeth. Taurus signifies the neck, the face, swallowing, smell, the nose, and also hunchback because of its curvature and lameness because of the bend of its foot, pains of the eyes and dangerous ailments or maimings because of the Pleiad; the sign is also devoted to worship and given to shameful acts; it also produces convulsions, excisions of the uvula, carbuncles, scrofulous swellings, chokings, or injuries, sufferings, and griefs about the nostrils, falls from a height or from four-footed animals, fractures of limbs, goitres, excision, sciatica, abscess. Gemini is the shoulders, forearms, hands, fingers, joints, sinews, strength, courage, change, the begetting of females, speech, the mouth, the windpipe, the voice. When afflicted, then, they bring about injuries in these parts, and they also bring attacks of robbers or enemies and overturn natives with wounds, cuttings, and excisions of limbs, or make them jaundiced, or bring falls from a height. Cancer is the chest, the stomach, the breasts, the spleen, the mouth, the hidden places; dimness of sight and maimings because of the little cloud; in this place come about leprosies, white leprosies, lichens, apoplexies, dropsies when the cause arises from the spleen; natives deeply crooked to one side, or somewhat lame, or crippled, jaundiced, of differing colours, with protruding teeth or squinting eyes, with eyelashes fallen out or with swollen eyelids, hunchbacked, wronged by water creatures, having freckles and spots about their eyes, coughing, spitting up, jaundiced, suffering in the side and in the lungs. Leo is the ribs, the loins, the heart, courage, sight, the sinews; natives become mad or possessed by a god, and convulsed through violence or affliction, or through courage or bodily exercise they suffer the loss of a limb or a mutilation, and they are wronged in the luminaries. It is also a cause of foul odours; hence it makes natives disgraceful, or castrated, liable to fractures, falling from a height or from four-footed animals, bitten by wild beasts, injured by a collapse or a fire, and further melancholic, with cancerous ulcers, and given to effeminate lewdness. Virgo is the belly, the intestines, and the hidden parts within, whence it also brings about the causes of sufferings, and makes natives weaker in intercourse, or continent and modest. So that we may not seem to write at great length: from the nature of the sign and of the planet the injuries and sufferings become evident. It makes natives short of breath, ruptured, possessed by a god, given to prophetic frenzy, and for women hysterical conditions and ailments of the belly. Libra is the hips, the buttocks, the colon, the hinder parts of the genitals [text uncertain]. This place produces paralytics, ruptures, hernias, dysenteries, dropsies, stones. Scorpio is the genitals and the seat; because of its sting it also produces dimness of sight, maimings, blindings, stones, stranguries, periodic diseases, looseness of the bowels, fistulas. Sagittarius is the thighs and the groin; natives become of differing colours, having birthmarks, bald, with dim sight, or suffering in the eyes, or maimings of the mouth, foul odours, gout; it also produces falls from a height or from four-footed animals, losses of limbs, wrongs from wild beasts, and supernumerary limbs. Capricorn is the knees and the sinews, convulsive both within and without, because the sign is enigmatic; it produces dimness of sight and maimings because of its spine, madnesses, natives troubled by moist humours, and further phrenitis, women burning with passion [text uncertain], tribades, licentious, devoted to worship, given to shameful acts. Aquarius is the legs, the shins, the sinews, the joints; it produces those afflicted with elephantiasis, the jaundiced, the dark and sallow, the maimed, the dropsical, the mad, the castrated, those liable to fractures, and to some stranguries. Pisces is the feet, the sinews, the extremities; natives become arthritic, having white leprosies, lichens, and leprosies, inclined downward, open to reproach, much injured, with supernumerary limbs, stammering, hard of hearing, scabby, wronged by water creatures, or troubled by moist sufferings.

This being so, one will have to examine precisely in every nativity the Lot of Fortune, in what sign it has fallen, and the nature of the sign signifies the injury; above all, the sign in which the lord of the Lot of Fortune is. Likewise one must examine the Daemon and its lord, in what signs they have fallen, and these will show the sufferings; and those in the place of action are to be understood by you in the same way. The injuries and sufferings will be more effective when malefics are upon the places or testify to them or to the rulers; and natives become free from injury or suffering when the places fall well and their lords happen to be unafflicted. Each planet produces its own effect from the nature that it has received. For if, for the sake of illustration, the lot falls in Aries, or its lord Mars [lacuna] is upon it, predict an injury about the head and the genitals or the seat; for whatever the planet is accustomed to bring about according to its own nature, it will bring about. For sometimes the injuries and sufferings come about when both places are afflicted, and especially when malefics are lords or testify to them.

Let there be, by way of example, so that we may not seem to have spoken obscurely, the Sun, Jupiter, and Mars in Capricorn, the Moon and the Ascendant in Leo, Saturn in Taurus, Venus and Mercury in Aquarius, the Lot of Fortune in Capricorn. The lord of Fortune, Saturn, was in Taurus; the native became maimed because of the Pleiad and because of the malefic Saturn, and a doer of unspeakable acts because of both signs; for Jupiter, the lord of the Daemon, which was in Pisces, was found in Capricorn. From these it was also shown that he was gouty; but it was sufficient to have found the suffering and the injury from the lot and its lord.

为了不显得我们说得隐晦，举一例：设太阳、木星与火星在摩羯，月亮与上升点在狮子，土星在金牛，金星与水星在水瓶，福点在摩羯。福点之主土星在金牛；本命者因昴星团、又因凶星土星而残缺，又因两个星座而成为行不可言之事的人；因为精灵点在双鱼，它的主木星被发现在摩羯。从这些也显示他患痛风；不过从福点及其主找出病苦与伤损，就已足够。

Another. The Sun, Venus, and Mars in Sagittarius, the Moon in Libra, Saturn in Cancer, Jupiter in Virgo, Mercury in Scorpio, the Ascendant in Capricorn. The Lot was in Scorpio; the native was injured in the genitals. The lord of Scorpio was in Sagittarius; he was bald and maimed because of the arrowhead. But Jupiter, the lord of the Daemon, being found in the place of the god, made him recover his sight through a god; he also became a giver of oracles.

另一例。太阳、金星与火星在射手，月亮在天秤，土星在巨蟹，木星在处女，水星在天蝎，上升在摩羯。福点在天蝎；本命者生殖器受伤。天蝎之主在射手；他秃顶，又因箭头而残缺。但精灵点之主木星被发现在神之位，使他借神之力重见光明；他也成了神谕的给予者。

Hence benefics, too, overturn natives with injuries and sufferings when they fall badly, while malefics falling well leave them free from injury, bringing about only ailments and passing troubles. If somehow the lords of the Lot or of the Daemon happen to be in the place of the god or of the goddess, enclosed by malefics or receiving their testimony, they make natives utterers of oracles, or mad, or foreknowing. Fittingly, then, did the author say: "If the planet that shows the injury happens to be in a powerful place and is viewed by a malefic, the sufferings that befall will be hard to wipe out and incurable; but if a benefic is upon the afflicted place or testifies to it as well, natives will be released either by medical treatment or by the help of a god." He calls powerful places the angles and the two succedent places of the lots, and especially when the malefics [lacuna] having obtained them are upon these. One must, then, examine the lots precisely and by degree; for often by the broad view the lot falls in one sign, but by the degree reckoning in another. This happens because of the degrees of the luminaries and of the Ascendant, if they are found either at the ends or at the beginnings of the signs. In general, then, the Sun, the Moon, Saturn, and Mercury, in opposition or succedent, bring injuries about the sight and the causes of other sufferings, or madness, or apoplexy. The Sun succedent to Mars or in the same sign with him produces natives who spit up, who spit blood, who suffer in the heart, and injuries about the faculty of sight. Saturn and Mars in the IC, either together or singly, produce dimness of sight, or epileptics, or makers of images of gods or of the dead, and initiates of hidden or secret rites; the like also if they overcome or oppose the conjunction or the full moon, or singly view the Moon when the Moon is dissolving some phase: they produce natives who are mad, out of their senses, epileptic, utterers of oracles.

Let there be by way of example the Sun and Saturn in Capricorn, the Moon in Scorpio, Jupiter in Leo, Mars in Pisces, Venus and Mercury in Aquarius, the Ascendant in Virgo; the Lot of Fortune in Scorpio, the Daemon in Cancer. Saturn, then, opposed the Daemon, which brings about matters of the intellect and the soul, and viewed the full moon and the preceding phase, while the lord of the Lot opposed the Ascendant. He had, then, an injury about the necessary places and a sensation in the feet, but above all he was moonstruck.

举一例：设太阳与土星在摩羯，月亮在天蝎，木星在狮子，火星在双鱼，金星与水星在水瓶，上升在处女；福点在天蝎，精灵点在巨蟹。于是土星对冲那造成心智与灵魂之事的精灵点，又观照望月与前一相，而福点之主与上升点对冲。所以他在必要的部位有伤损，脚上有感觉，但最主要的是他犯了月病。

Another. The Sun in Sagittarius, the Moon in Cancer, Saturn in Taurus, Jupiter and Mercury in Scorpio, Mars in Leo, Venus in Capricorn, the Ascendant in Aquarius, the Lot of Fortune in Leo. Mars lies upon it while Saturn overcomes; the Sun, found in the places of Jupiter and signifying matters about the groin, the thighs, and the feet, produced an injury in these and gout; for he is himself lord of the sinews. And since Saturn was found in the IC, the native saw apparitions of gods and of the dead.

The Lot of Fortune in Capricorn, the Daemon in Scorpio; the malefics opposed these; the native became effeminate and a doer of unspeakable acts. For Capricorn is licentious, and its lord was in Taurus, a passive sign; and Scorpio shows the manner of the licentiousness.

Another. The Sun and Venus in Sagittarius, the Moon in Cancer, Saturn in Gemini, Jupiter and Mars in Leo, Mercury in Scorpio, the Ascendant in Capricorn. The Lot of Fortune in Leo, the Daemon in Gemini; Saturn, lying upon it, made the native castrated; for its lord was in Scorpio, which signifies the genitals, and the Sun was in Sagittarius, which signifies the places about the groin. Hence the malefics, entering into the Daemon or opposing it, make natives mad or out of their senses.

另一例。太阳与金星在射手，月亮在巨蟹，土星在双子，木星与火星在狮子，水星在天蝎，上升在摩羯。福点在狮子，精灵点在双子；土星压在它上面，使本命者被阉割；因为它的主在象征生殖器的天蝎，而太阳在象征腹股沟一带的射手。所以凶星进入精灵点或与它对冲时，使本命者疯狂或失去心神。

Another. The Sun, the Moon, Mercury, and the Ascendant in Scorpio, Saturn in Leo, Jupiter in Cancer, Mars in Capricorn, Venus in Libra. The lots in Scorpio; the native became maimed because of the sting; and besides, Saturn overcame the conjunction and the luminaries, and the lord, Mars, fell out of the favourable places.

另一例。太阳、月亮、水星与上升点在天蝎，土星在狮子，木星在巨蟹，火星在摩羯，金星在天秤。诸点在天蝎；本命者因螫针而残缺；此外土星压制合朔与两光，而主星火星已失位。

Another. The Sun and Mercury in Taurus, the Moon in Aquarius, Saturn and Venus in Aries, Jupiter in Virgo, Mars in Pisces, the Ascendant in Leo, the Lot of Fortune in Taurus; its lady Venus was in Aries with Saturn; such a native had mange on his head and white leprosy and lichens on his body; for the lord of the Daemon was in Pisces.

另一例。太阳与水星在金牛，月亮在水瓶，土星与金星在白羊，木星在处女，火星在双鱼，上升在狮子，福点在金牛；它的女主人金星与土星同在白羊；这样的本命者头上有疥癣，身上有白斑癞与苔癣；因为精灵点之主在双鱼。

Another. The Sun in Taurus, Mars in Taurus, the Moon in Virgo, Saturn in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Gemini, Mercury, Venus, and the Ascendant in Aries. The Lot of Fortune in Sagittarius, its lord in Gemini; likewise the Daemon in Leo, its lord in Taurus; such a native became short-armed.

Another. The Sun and Mercury in Aries, the Moon in Pisces, Saturn and the Ascendant in Aquarius, Mars and Venus in Taurus, Jupiter in Libra, the Lot of Fortune in Pisces, the Lot of the Daemon in Capricorn. Such a native was seized by a god and mad. The lord of the Lot, Jupiter, was in Libra, the place of the god; the lord of the Daemon, Saturn, in the Ascendant; and Venus was also found in the IC.
