XXXIII. On the Separation of Parents.

Mars and Saturn, intercepting the luminaries, or falling between the signs that have received them, or between them with their rays, separate the parents. When, of the luminaries, the one of the sect has fallen out of the favourable places, while the one contrary to the sect is present with a destructive planet, it separates the parents. Saturn lying with the Sun while the Moon is estranged separates the parents. If the lord of the Ascendant is productive while the Ascendant is afflicted and its co-ruler has fallen out of the favourable places, the parents of these natives will be separated, the native himself will be very unsettled and unfortunate, and the parents' affairs will be diminished. The parents are in harmony when the luminaries and their rulers are in harmony with one another. When the receiver of the Sun is in harmony with the Moon, and that of the Moon with the Sun, the parents are in harmony.

Whichever of the luminaries lies contrary to its sect, or is rejected by a destructive planet, or has it upon the tenth from itself and applies to it, or is opposed by it, whichever is first carried to the setting, or whichever's place is in worse condition, will die first. If the Moon is waxing and the nativity is conjunctional, and one of the destructive planets regards the first full moon, then, if this happens in a feminine sign, it will show the prior death of the mother, and in a masculine sign that of the father. If the nativity is a full-moon nativity, the coming conjunction must be examined; if a malefic regards it in a feminine sign, the mother will die first; and if the Sun, the father. If the Sun happens to be in the hemisphere below the earth, the father will for the most part die abroad. When Saturn is separating from an angle, if Mars comes upon it and one of them testifies to Jupiter or to the Sun, the father will die abroad. If, when the nativity is diurnal, the Moon is afflicted above the earth, or when the Moon is cadent a destructive planet comes upon her, or the same afflictions befall Venus, the mother will die first. If the ruler of the Sun and the Sun do not see the Ascendant, the father will die abroad. When the Sun is afflicted by a destructive planet and Jupiter is overcome, the father will die a violent death. If Saturn alone afflicts the planets mentioned, the causes of death are chokings, dropsies, fluxes, chills, the drinking of poisons, shipwrecks, or old affairs; if Mars alone afflicts them, cutting with iron, bites, excess of blood, miscarriage, premature birth, burning, or falls; and if both, the violence is worse, according to the combination of the inclination that applies.

XXXIV. On Free and Servile Nativities.

Nativities that differ in birth, both servile and well-born, are grasped from the phases of the nativity. For if the sign of the phase or the lord of the sign falls out of the favourable places or is viewed by malefics, natives will be of lower birth, or, even having come into glory and trust, they will be brought down; but if the phase is found angular and its lord receives testimony from benefics, they will be well-born and glorious. If the place happens to be in productive signs while the lord falls out of the favourable places or is viewed by malefics, natives born free or well brought up will be overturned by adversities, subjections, and want. If the lord is found in productive signs while the place falls out of the favourable places, natives will suffer in their early years in subjections and, having been carried [lacuna], will later come into freedom, advancement, and family, and will prosper and be glorified, especially if benefics also incline toward them. If both the place and the lord fall out of the favourable places and both are viewed by malefics, natives become exposed infants or captives and will have experience of subjection; but if, while this is so, benefics are also added or testify along with them, after the periods of the malefics they will be released from subjection and come into wealth. If the place is guarded by malefics and the lord by benefics, natives born to servitude will be brought up as free, or will pass into being substituted as children and into adoption; conversely, if the place is guarded by benefics and the ruler by malefics, natives born free will be brought up into slavery, or, having reached the full height of their prime, will give themselves up to subjection, either through lack of sustenance or for the sake of a trust or an undertaking.

XXXV. Eleven Configurations of the Moon with Respect to the Powers of Effects.

By the natural reckoning the configurations of the Moon are 7, but, as we have also found in other writers, 11: first the conjunction; second the rising; then, having moved 45 degrees away from the Sun, she makes the crescent phase; then up to 90 degrees the half-moon; then up to 135 degrees the gibbous; then up to 180 degrees the full moon; then, having moved 45 degrees away from the full moon, that is, up to 225, she makes the second gibbous; then up to 270 degrees the second half-moon; then up to 360 the setting.

She also has another configuration, when she first begins to wane.

We shall set out below how the configurations set out above are taken for the writing of effects, and to which god each belongs. The conjunction shows matters of glory and power, of royal and tyrannical dispositions, of all public affairs belonging to cities, of parents, marriages, and mysteries, and of all general and cosmic matters; and so likewise does the lord of the conjunction, of the latitude, and of the course. The rising of the Moon, which is also called the light, and its lord are significant for the topic of life and of action and of future substance, and confirm the matters of the conjunction. And just as the monthly and cosmic movements are observed from the first appearance, so the lord of the light shows the general effects; Mercury also shares in the strength up to the 4th day of the Moon. The crescent configuration signifies upbringing and the hopes of life, and matters concerning women and the mother; Mercury is strong up to the 8th. The half-moon configuration concerns injury and suffering and violent events, and further children, rank, and future goods; Venus is configured with it until the 12th day. The gibbous phase concerns happiness and future advancement, travel, and the sympathy of kin; the Sun is likened to it until the 14th day. The full moon concerns glory and lack of glory, travel, violent events, those who fall from eminence and those who grow from the least beginnings, sympathies and sufferings, political rivalries, and the sympathy of parents; it also has the colour of the setting sign. The first lord of the waning of the light concerns the diminution of possessions, the cooling of activity, things that come to humiliation, and sudden falls; it is equal in power to the place that follows the setting; Mars is lord up to the 21st day of the Moon. The second gibbous signifies residence abroad, greater undertakings, and happiness; it is equal in power to the god; Jupiter is lord until the Moon is 25 days old. The second half-moon concerns old affairs, long-lasting sufferings, and children; for Saturn is equal to it in power until the 30th day. The lord of the crescent signifies the death of a wife, inactivity, or plunder; that is, the setting [text uncertain] concerns bonds, confinements, hidden matters, condemnation, and dishonour. Such, then, is the order of the configurations of the Moon; but what is compared with the 5 gods and the Sun [text uncertain] in unbound angles.

Wishing to set out the demonstrations of the methods more concisely, declining wordiness and mythical sorcery, I have put the chief points themselves before those who are most zealous in such matters and have spent long time on many procedures, and who are able by their own ingenuity to contribute as much. For I think I shall persuade them, through what has been written and what is yet to be said, to set aside the distrust and the easy slander of the science, and, having passed a verdict of ignorance and nonsense against its opponents, to show forth as immortal a foreknowledge that is in danger. Hence lovers of learning, having been trained through others in arithmetical and instructional procedures, will carry off the victory of glory through this composition, even though they themselves are not uninitiated in the construction of tables and ingresses, which I did not wish to set out at the beginning and to repeat. And if we seem to be writing down and interpreting the doctrines of the ancients, in this respect we shall carry off praise for virtue from our readers because of the reliability, generosity, and instructiveness of the methods. For others, using wordiness and varied methods and seeming to interpret, have further overturned the glory of foreknowledge that existed before, and, having practised a Greek diction in their words, have displayed a barbarous mind. One might suppose that these men display the manner of the Sirens, who, calling to those sailing past with a deceitful and broken voice through the music of instruments and a deadly song, destroyed them beside the rocks of the sea. Some suffer, and have suffered, the like who read the methods of those writers: at first, charmed by the display and the procedure of their words, they fell into boundless matter and, not finding the way out, perished not only in the deep but also in a labyrinth; and others, who thought they had escaped the danger, fell into a wearing and anxious torment and had a grievous end. If, then, one takes on the mind of Odysseus and sails past these, he leaves the science venerable in his life, and, becoming its housemate and companion, passes his time always with pleasure, having cut off, as one does in mysteries, the ill-disposed opinions of the opponents. Hence, leaving these aside, we shall come to the doctrine of the matters set before us.

Wishing to set out the demonstrations of the methods more concisely, declining wordiness and mythical sorcery, I have put the chief points themselves before those who are most zealous in such matters and have spent long time on many procedures, and who are able by their own ingenuity to contribute as much.
