XVI. Distinctions of the Stars by Triplicity with Regard to Prosperity or Misfortune: Configurations by Trine, Sextile, and Opposition.

第十六章　诸星按三方论兴旺或不幸的分辨：三分、六分与对冲的格局。

Jupiter in trine with the Sun signifies great and illustrious natives. If the Sun is in the Ascendant, this holds both for the father and for the nativity; if he is angular, for the father, for it signifies that he is glorious, though less so than in the former case; for the nativity it signifies nothing noteworthy, unless some other cause sets it right. If Saturn is in trine from the left with the Sun while the Sun is in the Ascendant, the matters of glory are much greater; for natives become rich in possessions, owners of many farms, and wealthy. If Mars joins Jupiter as well, the configuration indicates tyrants too; especially when the Sun is in the Ascendant, they hold power over many lands and armies. If Saturn joins him instead, the father will be great and a commander of arms and armies, provided the remaining factors also cooperate toward greatness, yet he will not be a tyrant, nor warlike and fearsome. If Mars opposes the Sun while Jupiter and Saturn are in right-hand trine with the Sun, the native will live amid greatness and the acclaim of crowds. If Saturn opposes the Sun, as stated before, the native will be opposed by his own people and his friends, but he will prevail over them and subdue them. If Saturn and Mars are in trine with the Sun while Jupiter opposes him from his own degrees or signs, it makes the native fit to rule and of good standing. If such a configuration occurs by sextile, the effects are lesser.

Venus in sextile with the Sun, when she is a morning star, signifies that the father and the native are charming and distinguished; if the configuration occurs in the Good Daemon or in Good Fortune, the native will be deemed worthy, through a woman, of the purple and of wearing gold.

金星与太阳成六分，当她是晨星时，预示父亲与本命者有魅力而出众；若这个格局在善灵之位或好运之位，本命者会借一个女人而被认为配得紫袍与佩金。

Saturn in left-hand square with the Sun harms the father's livelihood while the father is still alive, especially in feminine signs or in contrary degrees. If he is in opposition, much worse: he surrounds the native with injuries and sufferings, and the native will be betrayed by his household and by parasites. If he is on the right, the effects become lesser; and if he should be in the Ascendant or at the Midheaven, the adversities will be fewer. Mars in square with the Sun is bad for the father and for the native, for he brings about injuries and sufferings; if he is in opposition and in afflicted degrees, he brings about injuries in the joints as well. If Mars is in the right-hand square, which is the tenth, it will be worse; for besides this, natives will also be deranged in their minds. Jupiter in square with the Sun in inglorious degrees or signs proves unpleasant; for the good of the planet is brought down and falls away into its opposite. In glorious signs or degrees, especially when angular, he makes natives glorious and acquisitive. Happening to be in opposition to the Sun he is more unpleasant still; for not only are the good things he gives extinguished, but natives will also meet with the anger of superiors and the opposition of crowds. Positions of square and opposition in equal degrees, then, are harsh.

Mars in trine with the Sun in a nocturnal nativity, especially in feminine signs and when he is on the right, signifies great and illustrious natives who are lords of life and death, provided the remaining configurations also agree with the nativity; and if, besides this, Jupiter too is in right-hand trine, it makes great potentates, patrons of cities, and leaders of crowds. If the nativity is female and Venus is present with them, the native will reign as queen and hold power over many lands; such women become beneficent and subject to no one. If one of them is in its own place and the other happens to be in its own triplicity, they are in no way contrary for either female or male nativities; for natives become kings of kings, provided one of them is ruler and the other co-ruler or master of the nativity, and they are lords of the Lot of Fortune or of the Hour. If they are in masculine signs, the effects will be lesser and much worse; in sextile they are feebler both for good and for ill.

If Mars is in square with the Moon on the left side, in alien degrees or signs, in a diurnal nativity, he is the cause of many adversities: he brings afflictions and humiliations upon the mother, and natives are made subject to others while living abroad; some become soldiers, toil-worn and treated with insolence. These things happen provided the nativity does not also make the remaining factors lowly [text uncertain], while the master or cooperator or sect-partner of the planet is in the places unconnected with the Ascendant. If the remaining factors concur, natives become captives and die in public. If Mars is in opposition in the same arrangement, the hardships are more intense and hard to undo; and still more, if he appears in right-hand square, natives suddenly lose everything. There is a great difference between square and opposition. For if Mars is in Aries and the Moon in Cancer, the effects are reversed and become similar to those of the trine. Likewise, even if they are in opposition, Mars in Scorpio and the Moon in Taurus, not only do they not oppose fortune, but they also become causes of advancement and glory.

Venus in trine with the Moon in a nocturnal nativity and in feminine signs makes natives charming and happy; some also lead crowds and are deemed worthy of the purple and of wearing gold, according to the greatness of the nativity; for they become philosophers, musicians, and lovers of letters, and come within the friendship of kings. If the nativity is also shown to be royal by both of them, through the one being ruler and the other master of the nativity, the configuration becomes tyrannical; for natives become kings of kings, glorious and cheerful. In sextile with one another they become more moderate in power; in the Good Daemon and Good Fortune, however, they fall nothing short of the trine, especially if the configuration happens to be in the middle of a tropical or equinoctial sign, and much more if it is observed in Pisces and Taurus.

Venus in square with the Moon makes natives successful, charming, rich, and provides all that she provides in trine, especially if she is present in her own sign or degree, but with reversals; for what they provide is easily overturned. If they are in alien signs, or contrary to their sect, or in contrary degrees, they become causes of outrages, instability, and public exposure on account of women and disgraceful acts; and they are worse when placed thus in opposition.

Mercury in trine with the Moon in a diurnal nativity, when he is a morning star, makes natives inventive, successful, gifted, and quick; if the nativity is more glorious, he makes them secretaries of kings or rulers of cities or lands, lovers of letters, orators, geometers; if he is an evening star, especially when the nativity is nocturnal, very learned, philosophers, and sharers in mysteries; if the nativity is lofty on account of the remaining planets, respectable, honoured by crowds, and known to greater persons and to kings. He does these things when he is co-ruler with the planet that grants action [lacuna] when he is a cooperator, he brings these things about. When he is unproductive, he will have no power to bring about any of his own effects. In general, it is understood for every nativity that whatever each of the planets effects in trine, the same they bring about when they are together in the same sign. Mercury in sextile with the Moon is dimmer and weaker than in the foregoing. If he is in square, natives are sharp and shrewd, but their sharpness turns to baseness; for they become malicious slanderers, having their dealings from deceits and attacks and contemplating nothing sound. If in opposition, in addition to what has been said, they are contrary-minded and meet with ingratitude in their dealings; hence they are harmed by what befalls them.

Mercury in trine with Saturn, especially if they are in their own triplicities, makes stewards or administrators of kings, or men placed in charge of ship-owning or stewardships or matters similar to these; they become shrewd, intelligent, and set in their own opinions. In square with one another they blunt everything and make natives more sluggish, quarrelsome, and set in their own opinions, slow in their dealings, brought to trial on account of reproaches, ambush, deceit, and attack; they also become slow of speech or impeded in their hearing. If Mars testifies to Saturn or Mercury, he dissolves the impediment of the voice mentioned above, unless they happen to be in their own houses or terms, or to have exchanged them and to have the application of the Moon [text uncertain], or in any case to be ruler or co-ruler; for under these conditions the qualifications hold. If they are in opposition to one another, they separate natives from their sisters by death. Mercury, however, in the Ascendant or at the Midheaven makes the younger natives very learned, intelligent, and well-informed; but they do not reap the fruits of their pursuits, for what they accomplish will grow cold on account of the opposition of the planet. If they oppose one another in an equal-line position, he intensifies the effects much more and impedes the hearing or the speech, and natives become possessed in temples, uttering oracles, or they also lose their wits.

Mercury in trine with Jupiter indicates great undertakings, especially when he is oriental and a morning star; for natives become secretaries or administrators of kings or cities or crowds. In general, if Mercury happens to be in the places of action and grants action, natives will win glory and acquisition of livelihood, especially in productive signs. In sextile they bring about the same, but less. If they are in square and well configured, whatever they bring about for acquisition and glory comes with envy; if badly configured, along with envy they bring ruin and the opposition of superiors. If they are in opposition, they cause greater slanders, and natives become inconstant and contrary-minded; if they are in opposition in the sign of the Bad Daemon, natives will be oppressed by a great personage and will meet with uprisings of crowds; they also have few brothers and harbour some enmity toward brothers or children or kinsmen.

Mercury in trine with Mars, or in right-hand sextile, indicates varied undertakings: sometimes secretaries, sometimes merchants, interpreters, geometers, lawyers, philosophers, but all of them of bad character, sharp, intelligent, liars; he also makes teachers of arms or performers with weapons. If Jupiter too is configured with them, especially in productive places, he makes soldiers, and often augurs, sacrificers, people who foreknow the future and understand more than other men. In square he will make natives more varied than those mentioned before; for he makes magicians, deceivers, sacrificers, physicians, astrologers, demagogues, bankers, counterfeiters, forgers, who manage their affairs through villainy, attack, and deceit; they also become thieves, perjurers, impious, plotters against their equals, greedy for shameful gain, defrauders, having simply nothing of the free man about them; hence they are entangled in very many evils and experience arrest or exile or detention. Especially when they happen to be in unproductive signs or degrees, they bring about worse things; and when both are in the IC or in the setting place, or when one is setting and the other is under the earth, natives commit murders or will be accomplices, living off robbery; some also kill their brothers, and their final end will be violent, especially if they also take in the Moon; for they die violent deaths and remain unburied. If they are in four-footed signs, natives are caught by wild beasts; in human-shaped signs, by robbers; in solid signs, by a fall from a height or a collapse; in fiery signs, by fire; in watery signs, by shipwrecks; in tropical signs, fighting in single combat. They do these things also when they have exchanged places or are together. If one of them is ruler and the other master, and Mercury is in sextile with Venus or together with her, they make natives intelligent, charming, lovers of the Muses, fond of play, jesters, at other times poets, song-writers, voice-trainers, actors of mimes and of comedy, and sometimes also athletes or victors in the sacred games; moreover, they are acquirers through varied undertakings. If the nativity is female, they become musicians, sleeping with many, living in the manner of courtesans, lovers of letters, singers.

Venus in trine with Saturn makes natives austere, unsmiling, frowning, rather hard in matters of love, not sleeping with many; they do, however, have intercourse with unworthy women, or with bought slaves, or with older women; some also have intercourse with the wives of their brothers or of their overseers, or with those of their fathers, or even with their stepmothers; and their own wives sleep with others in secret and have intercourse with their husbands' slaves or friends. It must be understood, however, that a great difference arises according to the changes of signs and degrees; for the same configuration, if they are together, makes natives filthier, or such as fall asleep in the act, and at times sleeping with many, but often not even having intercourse, only taking pleasure. In square they are much worse; for they turn what was said of the trine for the worse, and natives also take wives out of prostitution; they also become graceless and licentious. It becomes worse still if the configuration falls in the setting place or the IC; for what has been said is aggravated for the worse, especially when Mars is with them or squares or opposes them; for natives commit shameful acts and are slandered by crowds, and often, meeting on this account with notoriety or arrests, they come to a bad death. If they are in signs or degrees devoted to worship, natives will indulge in impure passions and unnatural pleasures. In sextile with one another they have the same pattern of effects as in trine, but faint and weak. When they are morning stars and in the quarter of the east wind, they make women masculine, not only in their dealings, but also, sleeping with women, they perform the deeds of men; when they are evening stars, they make men feminine; for at times, sleeping with men, they perform the deeds of women, and often they are also deprived of their genitals.

Saturn in trine with Jupiter: the configuration indicates good; it makes natives rich in landed property, lords of grain-lands and vineyards, grain farmers, and founders of building plots, villages, and cities, but heavy and frowning. If the configuration is more elevated and Mars regards it, and around the Sun and the Moon [text uncertain], they make commanders of armies and leaders of naval and land forces, and some they bring to kingships or tyrannies. If the configuration happens to be in the triplicity of Saturn, especially with Jupiter in Aquarius and Mars turned away, it makes natives humble in spirit, fearful, by no means shining out nor sharing in any office, but withdrawn and choosing a rustic life. According to the differences of the signs and of the places, variations in their undertakings also come about. They bring about the same when together in productive signs.

Saturn in square with Jupiter blunts the good of the planet, especially if Saturn is further to the right and more oriental; for natives become slow to advance, prone to losses, acquiring with toil and labour; they are also harmed with regard to children: some become childless, others see the death of their children. The place of brothers too is harmful for them: they separate them by death from the more kindly and affectionate ones, and make the rest enemies and injurious; especially when they are outside the angles. In opposition to one another they are harsher, bringing misery and opposition.

土星与木星成四分，使这颗星的好处变钝，尤其若土星更在右方、更东出；因为本命者晋升艰难，容易受损失，靠辛劳获取；他们在子女方面也受损：有些人无子，有些人目睹子女死去。兄弟之位对他们也有害：它们以死亡使他们与较为亲善慈爱的兄弟分离，使其余的成为仇敌、加害于人；尤其当它们在四角之外时。彼此对冲时更为严酷，带来困苦与反对。

Saturn in trine with Mars signifies natives insecure in their livelihood and unable to bear toil, makes them sluggish and violent in their dealings, either having few children or destroying those born to them; moreover they are taken captive or injured. In square they are much worse; for their children are destroyed, likewise also those of their brothers, or they are separated from one another by enmities, or they become hard to set right, or are injured; they meet with setbacks in all their dealings, entangled in the enmities of great men and plotted against, and the configuration falls into great dangers; for, falling into raids of robbers or enemies, or into shipwreck, natives die violent deaths, some are reduced to captivity, and often they are also in danger from fire or iron. In opposition to one another they bring about the foregoing more strongly; besides this, natives become poor, toil-worn, unfortunate, and some carry loads on their backs like beasts and have toilsome and disgraceful occupations. With these configurations too there is a great difference, not only according to the property of the signs and degrees but also according to the magnitudes of the nativities. If the configuration is unregarded by Jupiter, the Moon, and the Sun, they will make the nativity inglorious; if these regard it and one of them happens to be master and the other co-ruler, then too the foregoing occurs. The effects are harsher in the God and the Goddess, blunter and like a shadow in the Good Daemon and Good Fortune, worse and indissoluble in the Bad Daemon and in Bad Fortune, which is idle and shadowed.
