[1] These things, then, the barbarian sphere declares about the individual degrees. But a nativity cannot be fully set out unless everything has been compared with the balanced mixtures and aspects of the planets, as you remember we have said very often. For when the cold of other stars has been set against fiery stars, and the ice of the cold has been tempered by the blaze of fiery heat, a mixture of tempering is also brought about.

[2] Everything, therefore, must be gathered according to the powers of the places and of the planets. For a planet suffers the loss of its power when it has been placed in the cast-down places or in its depressions, and it obtains the greatest licence of decreeing when it has acquired the authority of licence either from its place or from its exaltation. And the planets rejoice, as we have said very often, in the first place when placed in their exaltation, in the second place in their terms, in the third in their houses.

[3] When, therefore, everything has been gathered by an exact reckoning, we ought to examine the whole body of the nativity, so that, gathering the fates of men from the powers of all the planets, we may set out with true pronouncements whatever has been decreed.

[1] Receive, then, Mavortius, our glory, what we promised you with the greatest trepidation of mind: these seven books, composed after the order and number of the seven planets. For the first book undertook only the advocacy of a defense; but in the remaining books we have handed down to the Romans the teaching of a new work.

[2] But you, met by the preceding admonition and reminded by the religious authority of an oath, guard these books with a pure soul and a pure mind, lest the knowledge of this work be made known to unskilled ears and sacrilegious souls. From the beginning the truth of these things willed itself to be concealed and hidden [text uncertain], and the nature of divinity has hidden itself under very many coverings, so that it should not be easy of access, nor be laid open to all, with the origin of its majesty revealed.

[3] It will befit us too to do this in these books, so that the reading of them may lie open to the religious but always be denied to the profane and sacrilegious, lest we pollute the venerable writings of the ancients by sacrilegious publications, as it were. Therefore hand them on to your sons, since you have instructed them from their earliest years in every duty of virtue, and hand them on to your friends, but those whom the faithful bond of love joins to you, whom you know to imitate the examples of your virtue.

[4] Let it suffice that we have published for you alone the craft of these books, which we entrust to you. You are the true interpreter, you the faithful guardian, you the religious high priest; you alone, by the merit of your virtues, will be able to adorn what we have completed with watchful care and labor of both mind and body, with the greatest anxiety and trepidation.
