On the Ascendant.

论上升点

[1] The signs too, Mavortius, our glory, have from their own nature, without the presence of any planet, the greatest power of decreeing, and in many nativities the bare substance of the signs itself is at work. But this efficacy is found in the angles alone. For the angles, even if they are left bare of the testimonies of the planets, receive from their own nature the power of decreeing. So that you may understand this more clearly, I shall show it by the authority of the principle itself.

〔一〕马沃尔提乌斯，我们的光荣，星座也凭自己的本性，即使没有任何行星在场，也有极大的判定之力；在许多本命盘里，起作用的正是星座赤裸的实质本身。但这种效力只在四角里才有。因为四角即使没有行星的见证，也凭自己的本性取得判定之力。为了让你更清楚地明白这一点，我将以这条原理本身的权威来显示。

The Ascendant in Aries.

上升点在白羊

[2] If the Ascendant has been found in Aries, the Midheaven will be in Capricorn, the Descendant in Libra, and the lower Midheaven is found in Cancer. What, then, the Ascendant placed in Aries decrees, and what the three remaining angles decree, I shall for the present explain in general terms. When the Ascendant is in Aries, it decrees a great many things in youth; it denies brothers, or out of many brothers preserves one. But it also weakens the native himself with the bitterness of some defect; it always pursues his name with hatred; the father's substance does not remain in the same state, but now is squandered and scattered, and again, when dissipated, is gathered together. To some he will seem the more secure for his excessive liberality, to others the constancy of his liberality will be displeasing, and he will bestow his benefits on the ungrateful, so that equal thanks are never returned to him. He will certainly be changeable, and his head will always be wearied by various pains.

〔二〕倘若上升点被发现在白羊，中天就会在摩羯，下降点在天秤，天底则在巨蟹。那么，上升点落在白羊判定什么，其余三个角又判定什么，我暂且笼统地解释。上升点在白羊时，判定青年时有非常多的事；它不给兄弟，或从许多兄弟中只保全一个。它也以某种缺损的痛苦削弱本命之人自己；总以仇恨追逐他的名声；父亲的资财不会保持同一状态，而是时而挥霍、散失，时而散失了又聚拢回来。在一些人看来，他因过分慷慨而更为可靠；另一些人却不喜欢他一贯的慷慨；他会把恩惠施给忘恩负义的人，以致从来得不到同等的回报。他当然多变，他的头总被种种疼痛所困。

[3] If the Midheaven is partilely in Capricorn, it decrees the ornaments of a certain lasting glory and will cause many to flatter him with a certain humility. He will be set over certain business affairs and over letters, supplying many with the food of daily life, sustaining the fortunes of others by his own stewardship, ingenious in many necessary matters, a man to whom the secrets of hidden religions are entrusted; and he will penetrate to the heavenly secrets if the star of Mercury has aspected this place from any side, or if Mercury has been found in this very place.

[4] The third angle, that is, the Descendant, claims for itself the license of decreeing. If it has been found in Libra, it decrees a life spent in constant attendance in the royal palace, or it sets him in public offices. But he will be changeable in life through a certain unevenness, so that misfortune always follows all his felicities, and ill fortune his prosperity, so that from the highest step of rank he is called back to the lowest by a precarious humiliation. For the spite of envy assails all his renown, especially if Jupiter has not seen the Ascendant from trine, or is not in it; for then these evils grow more strongly.

〔四〕第三个角，即下降点，也为自己要求判定之权。它若被发现在天秤，就判定一生在王宫里经常侍从，或把他安置在公职中。但他一生会因某种起伏不定而多变，以致一切幸福之后总跟着不幸，一切顺遂之后总跟着厄运，以致他从品级的最高一级，因跌落的屈辱被召回到最低一级。因为嫉妒的怨气攻击他的一切声名，尤其是倘若木星没有从三分照见上升点，或不在其中；因为那时这些祸患会更强烈地滋长。

[5] The fourth angle will be the lower Midheaven; when Aries is rising, it will always be in Cancer. It will make the natives renowned and adorned with the fillets of crowns, and statues and images alike will be decreed for them, if Jupiter, placed in the Ascendant, has aspected this place, or if it has been found in this very place. Certain of his kinsmen will be his adversaries, on his own account or on account of someone close to him. He will be unkempt, with the squalor of uncut hair, and will always be well supplied with an abundance of necessities, especially if Jupiter has been found in any of the angles of the Ascendant.

The Ascendant in Taurus.

[6] If the Ascendant has been found in Taurus, the native will be wearied by many continuous labors, and whatever he has attained in early life he always loses. But afterward what he had lost is heaped up with an increase of gladness, and he will have the adornment of good felicity, and will see his enemies laid low by an unbroken course of wretched humiliation. If the Midheaven is in Aquarius, he will always move among the more powerful through the favor of friendship, will always have his livelihood from public offices, will always be involved in business connected with water, and will be one who is never assailed by the odium of an accusation. He will certainly have both increases and losses of fortune.

〔六〕倘若上升点被发现在金牛，本命之人会被许多接连不断的劳苦所困，他在早年得到的一切总会失去。但后来，他失去的东西又带着欢欣的增长堆积起来，他会有美好幸福的装饰，并会看到他的仇敌被一连串可悲的屈辱击倒。倘若中天在水瓶，他总会凭友谊的情面与较有权势的人往来，总会从公职得到生计，总会牵涉与水有关的事务，从不会遭到控告的嫌恶。他当然会有资财的增长，也有损失。

[7] If the Descendant has been found in the sign of Scorpio, he will be sensible in every dealing of life, sustaining the duties of stewardship over the affairs of others. He loses his first wife by the intervention of death. If the native is a woman, she loses both her husband and a son. If the lower Midheaven has been found in Leo, it will make men who seek the support of a patrimony by their own labor, and who obtain from their own kin, through various kinds of plots, the greatest means of substance, but substance that remains with them in an order of lasting felicity. But these things are decreed according to the measure of the nativity.

The Ascendant in Gemini.

上升点在双子

[8] If the Ascendant has been found in Gemini, the native will labor when placed at the first beginnings of life, and comfort will always be brought to him by his parents. He will certainly be always steeped in heavenly secrets, bound to greater men by faithful friendships, and one who loses his patrimony. If the angle of the Midheaven is in Pisces, it sets his life in a watery place, and he will possess patrimonies from a moist substance; his living will be furnished to him from the fortunes of others, and either his power or his patrimony will be divided between two cities.

〔八〕倘若上升点被发现在双子，本命之人在一生最初的开端会劳苦，安慰总由父母带给他。他当然总浸润于天上的秘奥，以忠实的友谊与较大的人物相结，却会失去祖产。倘若中天之角在双鱼，就把他的生活安置在有水的地方，他会从潮湿的实质得到祖产，他的生计会从他人的资财里供给他，他的权力或他的祖产会分在两座城市。

[9] If the Descendant has been found in Sagittarius, ruin will be brought on his brothers or his kinsmen through him, and it will torment his soul with the greatest anxieties through various changes of the times. He will have enemies, and, leaving his fatherland, he will linger among foreign nations; but afterward, having returned to his father's hearth, he will think himself restored by the protection of the gods. If the angle of the lower Midheaven is in Virgo, he will be shaken from his first years by a varied succession of labors, but with the passage of time he attains increases of the greatest felicity. But these things will come to each according to the measure of the nativity, which, as we have frequently said, you must observe in all cases.

The Ascendant in Cancer.

[10] If the Ascendant has been found in Cancer, it will make men always sharp of wit, but who accomplish everything with a measured slowness. It will make men grave and learned, men accustomed to grow seriously angry and to pursue all wicked men with stern indignation, strong and moderate, but men whose indignation is very easily appeased. They will certainly have the substance of their life from public or from royal places, from which the substance of life will be conferred on them, and they will always be occupied in public necessities, but very many, compelled by various necessity, will flatter them. But if, with the Ascendant placed in Cancer, Saturn is in it or has seen it, they will either bring about a violent death, or they fall into a great defect of health, or their elder brothers will perish by deaths that stand in place of their own.

〔十〕倘若上升点被发现在巨蟹，就会使人总是才思敏锐，却以有节度的迟缓完成一切。它会使人庄重、有学问，惯于严肃地发怒，以严厉的义愤追究一切恶人，刚强而有节制，但他们的义愤极易平息。他们的生活之资当然来自公家或王家的处所，生活之资就从那里授予他们；他们总忙于公家的需要，但非常多的人受种种需要所迫，会奉承他们。但倘若上升点落在巨蟹，而土星在其中或照见了它，他们或者会造成横死，或者落入严重的健康缺损，或者他们的兄长会死，那是代替他们自己的死。

[11] If the angle of the Midheaven is in Aries, the native will move in constant association with more powerful men, or his daily food is furnished to him from the fortunes of others, and he will always be seeking and desiring good things. But his patrimony changes in constant variety, and as often as it has been lost, so often is it acquired again. If the Descendant is in Capricorn, he will always be assailed by hidden envy, but afterward, after many troubles of unevenness, he is settled in quiet moderation. He will certainly be ingenious, adorned with sharp inquiries of the mind, enduring the torments of some hidden pain, or he will be wearied by endless pains of the soul.

〔十一〕倘若中天之角在白羊，本命之人会与较有权势的人经常往来，或者他每天的食粮由他人的资财供给，他总在寻求、渴望美好的东西。但他的祖产在不断的变化中更易，每失去一次，就重新得到一次。倘若下降点在摩羯，他总会受到暗中的嫉妒攻击，但后来，在许多起伏不定的困扰之后，他会安定于平静的节度之中。他当然机巧，以心智敏锐的探究为饰，忍受某种隐秘疼痛的折磨，或被无尽的心灵痛苦所困。

[12] If the angle of the lower Midheaven is in Libra, he will be wearied by many labors, and, applied to civic duties or given over to dealings with the populace, he will squander the substance of his former patrimony. He will certainly be second in all positions of power, and will be necessary to others. He will have the means of his substance from letters, and will be one to whom others entrust hidden secrets. He will reach the farthest spans of old age and will be honored with the good honor of burial; and if Mercury has been found in the following sign, he will be the first among all the male children. But if Venus has been found in the 2nd place, the daughters are favored with longer spans of life, if the lord of the nativity, as we said before, has been well placed and adorned with the rays of the benefic planets.

The Ascendant in Leo.

上升点在狮子

[13] If the Ascendant has been found in Leo, the one who has the Ascendant so will be entangled in many labors and many dangers. But through the whole time of his life he will be known to all; he will also always be freeborn, having free power, and one who exercises the venom of malice in all things; he will conceive the wish to command and to rule, acquiring the means of substance by his own labors. But if Mars has been found partilely in this same place, or if the Sun has aspected that very place with a square or opposite aspect, it denies children altogether. But if Jupiter has been found in the same way, it will give one daughter.

〔十三〕倘若上升点被发现在狮子，这样以它为上升的人会被许多劳苦、许多危险所缠绕。但他一生之中都会为众人所知；他也总是生而自由，拥有自由的权力，却在一切事上施放恶意的毒液；他会怀有发号施令、统治他人的愿望，以自己的劳苦取得资财。但倘若火星被发现精确到度地在这同一个宫位，或太阳以四分或对冲的相位照着这个宫位，就完全不给子女。但倘若木星被发现这样落位，会给一个女儿。

[14] If the Midheaven has been found in Taurus, he will have his life in a public place or in a temple. He will contract marriage with a widow, or with a woman debauched by another, or with one of low and servile status, or with an old woman, or with one assailed by public infamy; and the greatest honor will be conferred on him by a most powerful man. He will be knowledgeable in all things and will rejoice in the increases of prosperous fortune.

〔十四〕倘若中天被发现在金牛，他会在公共场所或神庙里生活。他会与寡妇结婚，或与被别人玷污的女人、或与地位卑下如奴的女人、或与老妇、或与遭公众恶名攻击的女人结婚；一位极有权势的人会授予他极大的尊荣。他会通晓一切，并因顺遂的命运增长而欢喜。

[15] If the Descendant is in Aquarius, his life will always have both increases and losses. He will be agreeable [lacuna] but he is approved in certain matters. If the lower Midheaven has been found in Scorpio, he will have the leading position in certain business affairs. But if Mars has aspected this place with any aspect, he will at some time be in custody, but in free custody. And if Mars so placed has been found in a morning rising, he will serve as a soldier or will be set over arms, but he will die in strange and foreign places, laid low by a sudden or violent death.

The Ascendant in Virgo.

[16] If the Ascendant has been found in Virgo, the native will be entangled in many labors and many anxieties, but he will be one to whom the divine foretells everything, either through a dream or by some divination, or at any rate through oracular responses and lots. And he will continue his prayers to the divine in manifold, unbroken succession. [lacuna] falling into the allurements of love through the indiscriminate desires of the eyes, and one who, with abandoned desire, longs to lie with all women. But he will labor under these vices only for as long as the ascension of his sign has not been completed. He will certainly be cheerful and humane, one with whom the pure bond of friendship endures, and to whom the care of some loss pertains, knowing many things and searching out the secrets of all the disciplines, keeping everything in the cloister of his breast, yet adorned with a reputation for simplicity, and one on whom great felicity and great means of substance are conferred, either through the grace of learned speech or through the business of trade, or from a succession, or from sacred rites, or from some virtue.

[17] If the Midheaven has been found in Gemini, it will give substance from public rites, but only when he has crossed the threshold of old age. He will be a worshiper of religions and of the gods, just, one whom the greatest part of the citizens strive to obey, searching out hidden matters by constant investigation, knowledgeable in many arts and disciplines; and in the last period of his life the duty of an upright and right life is shown to many through him.

〔十七〕倘若中天被发现在双子，它会从公共的仪式给予资财，但只在他跨过老年的门槛之后。他会是宗教与诸神的崇奉者，公正，大部分市民都愿服从他；他以不断的探究追寻隐秘之事，通晓许多技艺与学科；在他一生的最后时期，正直端正的生活之道会借着他向许多人显示。

[18] If the Descendant is in Pisces, he will travel through many foreign places, known to many men, and many will flatter him with the assiduous favor of their attentions. He will be agreeable, fortunate, charming, sharp, entangled in many occupations, always suited to every kind of dealing, and noble. If the lower Midheaven has been found in Sagittarius, he will be fortunate, substance will be conferred on him by his own kin, and very many will flatter him. He will be known to all, rendering thanks to the gods for his good fortune, or public rites will be entrusted to him. He will rejoice in the good fortune of his children, and he will soothe the grief of children lost by taking up again a fortunate offspring; he will be suited to everything, and also learned, and conspicuous for the good fortune of his agility.

〔十八〕倘若下降点在双鱼，他会走过许多异乡，为许多人所知，许多人会以殷勤侍奉的情面奉承他。他会讨人喜欢、幸运、有魅力、敏锐，牵涉许多营生，总适合各种交往，而且高贵。倘若天底被发现在射手，他会幸运，资财会由他自己的亲族授予他，非常多的人会奉承他。他会为众人所知，为自己的好运向诸神还谢，或者公共的仪式会托付给他。他会为子女的好运而欢喜，并会以重新得到幸运的子嗣来抚平失去子女的悲伤；他会适合一切，也有学问，并以敏捷的好运而显眼。

The Ascendant in Libra.

[19] If the Ascendant has been found in Libra, the native will have sickness and will be entangled in many snares of dangers; a crowd of adversaries will constantly assail him, and he will have contentious disputes over matters true and settled. He will certainly be religious and a worshiper of the gods, but one whose life always changes with the variety of unevenness. But he will be unconquered in everything and such that he seems inferior in nothing, glorious. But the place of children will be changeable, for the number of his children never remains whole. He will be one who wishes to have right judgment in all things, serving the divine and heavenly religions.

〔十九〕倘若上升点被发现在天秤，本命之人会有疾病，会被许多危险的罗网缠绕；一群对头会不断攻击他，他会为真实而确定的事情有争讼。他当然虔敬，是诸神的崇奉者，但他的一生总随着起伏的变化而更易。但他会在一切事上不可战胜，以致在任何事上都不显得居后，荣耀。但子女之宫会多变，因为他的子女之数从不保持完整。他会是在一切事上都愿有正确判断的人，侍奉神圣的、天上的宗教。

[20] If the Midheaven has been found in Cancer, he will be occupied in certain glorious activities. He will be reared in a religious place or in public ones, and in old age the greatest insignia of glory are conferred on him, so that the last period of his life is adorned with the splendors of nobility. In old age he will be well supplied, moneyed, and rich, and with the passage of time the whole substance of felicity comes to him by degrees; he will get children late, or will have one son. But if Jupiter has aspected this place with any aspect, he will rejoice in a numerous and fortunate offspring.

[21] If the Descendant has been found in Aries, he will have gain from watery things, or in watery places. He will be anxious from some fear, will meet some peril of his life in desert places, and will be shaken by an unbroken succession of dangers. He will be divided among many and frequent journeys abroad. He will certainly have a hidden defect, and when he has reached old age the greatest felicity will be conferred on him. But his wife will suffer from the dangers of madness. If the lower Midheaven has been found in Capricorn, his patrimony will change in various ways: whatever has been acquired is lost again, and again what was lost is found. But all his substance is sought by his own strength and his own virtues, so that, placed at the last step of age, he is adorned with the greatest increase of felicity. He will be compelled, however, to adopt as his son a child of another's offspring, or he will get children by a woman of the lowest station.

〔二十一〕倘若下降点被发现在白羊，他会从有水之物、或在有水之地得利。他会因某种恐惧而忧虑，会在荒僻之地遭遇某种性命之险，并被一连串危险所动摇。他会分身于许多次频繁的远行。他当然有隐秘的缺损，到了老年，极大的幸福会授予他。但他的妻子会苦于疯癫之险。倘若天底被发现在摩羯，他的祖产会以种种方式更易：所得的一切又会失去，失去的又会找回。但他的一切资财都凭自己的力量与德行求得，以致在年岁的最后一级，以幸福的极大增长为饰。但他会被迫收养别人的孩子作儿子，或从最低贱的女人那里得到子女。

The Ascendant in Scorpio.

上升点在天蝎

[22] If the Ascendant has been found in Scorpio, it will make the natives in early life sharp, hot-tempered, and agile, but they will be led through many kinds of misfortune. Afterward, however, they are lifted up by a fortunate license and will be given over to great joys, if Jupiter has aspected the Ascendant with any aspect; they will be glorious, will always hope for protection from the gods, and will receive the mysteries of sacred rites or of heavenly religions. They will be in another place, or will be transferred to another city by their own choice. They will always be raised up with lofty spirit, sharp, displaying the ornaments of speech. They will be such as always delight in variety. On account of friends or business they always run into dangers, and after many misfortunes from the loss of children they will rejoice again in a fortunate offspring.

[23] If the Midheaven has been found in Leo, his life will be wearied by varied labor and varied sweat, and he will be subject to someone more powerful for the sake of honor or of maintenance. He will be strong, and one whom very many flatter as his age advances, and who transfers a great deal from his own fortunes to others. He will be placed in some position of power and will increase the means of his father's substance. If the Descendant is in Taurus, he will have very many adversaries, all of whom he will see always overthrown in various ways. He will be such as is driven to sexual intercourse by the desire of the eyes, and one assailed by some infamy. He will both acquire and lose his patrimony, and as often as he has lost it he will obtain it again. If the lower Midheaven is in Aquarius, near water or from water he will have [probably: the means of life, but from the same source] [lacuna] so that a peril of life comes upon him, and whomever he has helped always proves ungrateful to him.

[24] If the Ascendant has been found in Sagittarius, it will make many adversaries, and a patrimony gathered together will be conferred from a source he had not hoped for. He will frequently be detained in foreign regions, and he will sail a great river or a great sea. He will always be placed in public dealings; he will have both his life and his profit in watery places or from watery places; he will attain a great many arts and a great many disciplines; he will be sensible, ingenious, and knowledgeable in all things. If the Midheaven has been found in Virgo, he will be set in great promotions and will be preferred to many by favor of power. He will attain the greatest power of license, a crowd of hearers will obey his commands, many will have through him the support of life and of living, and whoever has had any such thing conferred on him by the native always proves ungrateful to him.

[25] If the Descendant has been found in Gemini, he will have both children and grandchildren, but only when he has crossed the threshold of old age; and he will be such as bears all pains in the easiest way, and who despises losses with the upright authority of his mind. Others read through secret writings and show the orders of heavenly or sacred things. They will be ingenious, just, sensible, men who always pursue their adversaries with crafty dissimulation, teaching all things, and men on whom felicity is conferred by slow advances. If the lower Midheaven is in Pisces, he will have the supports of life in watery places. He will be such as has everything entrusted to his good faith. He will be known and noble, but estranged in regard to a wife or his affection for her. But if Jupiter has aspected this place with any aspect, he easily takes a wife, and the affections of marriage will be pleasing to him; but he marries a wife known for debauchery or adultery.

[26] If the Ascendant has been found in Capricorn, the native always shows friendship to his friends with pure affection. He will be crafty and cheerful, and one who lacks nothing for the support of life. He will travel abroad, and those to whom he has furnished the food of life always prove ungrateful to him. He will be lovable, small of spirit, and always troublesome to the gods with long and drawn-out prayers. He will be one whose means of substance abound. He will be bound to lusts for women, and one who, his lusts satisfied, strives to revile these same women, learning thoroughly the secrets of some mystery, or of sacred rites, or of another's life, or of hidden religions.

[27] If the Midheaven is in Libra, he will be pious, adorned with an honorable grace of speech, learned. He will pay his vows to the gods when freed from certain necessities or certain dangers. He will have prosperous activities, but after he has been weighed down by bad activities, felicity will be conferred on him from the misfortunes of others, and he will have gain from the deaths of others, or will find the advantages of felicity in some old and hidden thing.

[28] If the Descendant is in Cancer, he will have the greatest troubles from his kinsmen and will be entangled in the greatest dangers. If the lower Midheaven is in Aries, he will be in the greatest wanderings, and after the hardships of life he will be allotted rest, but his life will change through the variety of his activities. For now he will be on a high step of rank, now he is called back to the lowest with the fall of his rank. But this unevenness arises for him from the friendships of the powerful. He buries his wife and his first son, or at any rate whatever son has been born will be weakened by a grave defect of health.

[29] If the Ascendant has been found in Aquarius, whatever the native has obtained he squanders again by some sort of rending, and whatever he has had or sought he loses again, but what has been lost is for the most part gathered again in an easy way. He will take in many and cherish them, and will furnish many with the food of life; and all those on whom he has chanced to confer anything will be ungrateful toward him; and when placed in grave danger and despaired of by men, he is freed by the protection of the gods. He will be assailed by many with the envious hissing of spite. He will handle the duties of divine writings or of sacred rites or of religions, and will be known to great men for his good actions.

[30] If the Midheaven has been found in Scorpio, he will be strong, but he will be shaken by a hard life and hard dealings. He will pass from place to place, and if he is freeborn, he will perform servile duties; but afterward a prosperous outcome will follow him in all things. In regard to his wife and children too he will suffer wretched misfortunes in the beginning, and afterward felicity will be conferred on him through acquaintance with greater men. If the Descendant is in Leo, he will disagree with his wife in various quarrels. For he joins in marriage with an unworthy woman or an old woman, or with one who is captured by the various fires of love affairs; he will suffer plots from his own kin, and enemies rise up against him with sudden actions; and by his own strength and his own virtue he raises up [lacuna] a wife under another's legal power, or another man's betrothed, or at any rate he contracts marriage with a widow.

[31] If the lower Midheaven is in Taurus, he will be great and will move among many powerful men; he will have glory in all things and will govern the substance of many, so that a great many things are entrusted to him on account of the truthfulness of his discipline; and he will die after a long span of time, weighed down by the long weight of old age, if the lord of the nativity, following the power of its own condition and placed in the chief places of the nativity, adorned by sign and by degree alike, has decreed the full number of its time.

[32] If the Ascendant has been found in Pisces, the native will be ingenious, sensible, a faithful friend and close companion, and he will be promoted through certain business affairs, yet in such a way that another power is preferred to his power and honors. He will have enemies, but he will avenge himself on them in the easiest ways, and he will obtain glory from certain long affairs; with the passage of time he attains the ornaments of greater rank, will have a great increase of felicity, and will be constantly known through his journeys abroad, with the acquaintance of many.

He will be agile in all his dealings, will have no small disputes with more powerful persons, will run into plots on account of a certain person, and loses all that he first possessed, and again obtains the ownership of others' property, always showing a faithful bond of friendship to his friends. But desire gathered through the eyes always drives him to sexual intercourse.

[34] If the Descendant is in Virgo, he will be sensible and will furnish food to strangers. He will be one to whom faithful secrets are entrusted. He will relieve many friends with his food or his protection, and a great heap of riches comes to him; and his friends frequently prove ungrateful, and he will be bound to his wife by fond affections of love. But she too will frequently be ungrateful toward him. From the misfortunes of his wife or children he will suffer heavy torments of grief.

[35] If the lower Midheaven is in Gemini, he will be wearied by many sicknesses and will be applied to many labors; he will have some hidden pain or defect, and after the hardships of misfortune the greatest felicity will be conferred on him, so that he also supplies others with the food of life; and, when all his former possessions have been lost, riches will be conferred on him by a sudden chance. He will possess and have supports that furnish him everything, and when he has been weighed down by the burden of old age, he will die in foreign places by a sudden death. But in this case too the lord of the nativity must be sought.

[36] Some will think that these things have been said in general terms; but their substance is true. For each sign decrees all these things by its own power. For if you read the Myriogenesis of Asclepius, which he professed that the venerable star of Mercury had made known to him, you will find the orders of all nativities explained from the individual minutes, without any addition of the planets. For, setting the Ascendant in each individual minute, he explains the whole order of life, all the activities and the forms alike, and the last day of life, and also the kinds of dangers, by the truest and clearest principles. For since there are 30 degrees in each sign and 1,800 minutes, he described the whole fates of men by setting the Ascendant in a single minute.

[37] But he, sprung from a divine race and conceived in the propagation of a divine race, and steeped in the teachings of a venerable divinity, left behind an illustrious discipline of this work. In us, since our substance is frail and perishable, we do not deserve to be instructed by such teachings. Let us, then, follow in the footsteps of the divine men, and whatever has been handed down by them let us carry over [lacuna] in interpretations.

[38] But I would not have the Myriogenesis sought in these books, Lollianus, our glory. For when our modest powers, with the favor of a propitious divinity, have completed this work, then I shall make known to you the secrets of that work in another twelve books. But now everything must be learned step by step; for otherwise we cannot come to the Myriogenesis unless our mind has come to know the secrets of the first instruction.
