BOOK III
PREFACE.
[1] Let the whole discourse of mathesis that concerns the delineation of effects now be set out in definite pronouncements, so that, once everything the divine ancients published has been laid open and displayed, the entire teaching of this wisdom may be imparted by us, as fully as possible, to men devoted to this art.
[2] First of all, then, Lollianus, our glory, we must know that God, the maker of man, with nature showing the way, completed the form and condition and whole substance of man after the image and likeness of the world. For he composed the body of man, like that of the world, from a mixture of the four elements, namely fire and water, air and earth, so that the tempered union of all of them might adorn a living being in the form of a divine imitation; and he so composed man by the craft of divine workmanship that, under nature's compulsion, he gathered into a small body the whole power and substance of the elements, in order to prepare for that divine spirit, which descends from the heavenly mind to sustain the mortal body, a lodging that is frail, but nonetheless like the world.
[3] For this reason the five planets, and the Sun too and the Moon, sustain man, as a kind of lesser world, by their fiery and everlasting motion, so that the living being made in imitation of the world may be governed by a like substance of divinity.
[4] Therefore those divine men, worthy of all admiration, Petosiris and Nechepso, whose wisdom reached the very secrets of the divine, also handed down to us the nativity of the world through the divine teaching of their knowledge, to show and demonstrate that man, formed after the nature and likeness of the world, is sustained forever by the kindling fuel of perpetuity through the same principles by which the world itself is ruled and held together.

PREFACE.
序言

| 世界的本命盘 | the nativity of the world | 宇宙诞生时的天象 |

I. The Chart of the World.
[1] Following Asclepius and Anubis, to whom the most mighty divinity of Mercury entrusted the secrets of this science, they held the nativity of the world to be as follows. They placed the Sun in the 15th degree of Leo, the Moon in the 15th degree of Cancer, Saturn in the 15th degree of Capricorn, Jupiter in the 15th degree of Sagittarius, Mars in the 15th degree of Scorpio, Venus in the 15th degree of Libra, Mercury in the 15th degree of Virgo, and the Ascendant in the 15th degree of Cancer.
[2] In accordance with this nativity, then, and with these conditions of the planets, and with the testimonies which they bear in this nativity, and in accordance with these principles, they hold that the fates of men too are arranged, as is contained in that book of Asclepius called the Myriogenesis, so that nothing in the individual nativities of men seems to be foreign to this nativity of the world. Let us see, then, which planet lent its testimony to the lights, to what extent, and by what manner of its aspect; the lights are the Sun and the Moon.
[3] Saturn first joins itself to the Moon, for it has followed the Moon's condition; and it follows the condition of the Moon because, placed in a feminine sign, it received by opposition the rays of the Moon, which is placed in a feminine sign. But when this same Saturn, in this nativity of course, has made its passage into the sign of Aquarius, it joins itself in turn to the Sun by a like aspect and is in turn aligned with the same condition as the Sun; for, placed in a masculine sign, it associates itself with an equal testimony of aspect, since it has aspected the Sun by opposition with the same aspect with which it aspected the Moon.
[4] On the same principle Jupiter too was placed in Sagittarius, so that, placed in a masculine sign and bearing testimony to the Sun by trine, it might join itself first to the condition of the Sun; for this reason, placed in a masculine sign and associated with the Sun, which is placed in a sign of the same gender, it follows first the Sun's power. But when it has made its passage into Pisces, it joins itself in turn to the Moon on equal terms of condition; for in a similar way, itself placed in a feminine sign, it has aspected by trine the Moon, placed in a sign of the same gender, on a matching principle of condition.
[5] In the same way the star of Mars, placed in Scorpio, bears testimony to the Moon by trine, because it is in a feminine sign; but when it has come to Aries, it passes over to testimony of the Sun; for, situated in a masculine sign, it joins itself to the Sun by a trine aspect.
[6] But in the case of Venus this principle is reversed; for, placed in Libra, although that sign is itself masculine, it nevertheless bears testimony to the Moon by square; but when it has made its passage into Taurus, placed in a feminine sign and aspecting the Sun with a square aspect, it in turn bears testimony to it.
[7] The star of Mercury they held to be common in this nativity, because it bears testimony to neither the Sun nor the Moon by square, by trine, or by opposition, nor does it join itself by aspect to the Sun or the Moon; rather, it takes its delight in the Sun by day, if it is a morning star, and in the Moon by night, if it is an evening star. All these things we have described they hold must be observed in the nativities of men as well, and they think they cannot discover a man's fate unless these aspects have been gathered by shrewd investigation.

[8] But lest anyone be deceived by fabulous fictions and think that this nativity was composed by these most wise men without reason, everything must be explained by us in detail, so that the most wise principle of this secret may be made known to all men through the most careful expositions.
[9] This was not the nativity of the world; for the world had no fixed day of its origin, nor was anyone present at the time when the world was formed by the plan of the divine mind and of provident divinity; nor could the striving of human frailty reach so far as to be able easily to conceive or explain the origin of the world, especially since the greater apocatastasis, that is, the restoration, customarily takes place every 300,000 years through pyrosis or through cataclysm; for it is by these two kinds that the apocatastasis, that is, the restoration, customarily comes about. Then the cataclysm, the flood, follows the burning, that is, the pyrosis; for things burnt up could be reborn by nothing else, nor be recalled by anything else to their former appearance and form, unless the dust of the ashes, compacted by an admixture of water, had conceived the gathered fertility of all the generative seeds.
[10] But so that there might be a model for astrologers to follow in the nativities of men, these divine men in their wisdom devised this as a kind of nativity of the world. I would like, then, to explain the devices of this divine composition, so that the principle of this admirable conjecture may be laid open through zeal for teaching.

[11] They chose to place the Moon so that it joined itself first to Saturn and handed over to it the rulership of the times, and not without reason; for because the first origin of the world was uncultivated and rough and wild in its rustic way of life, and because rude men, who had set out on the first paths of light, unknown to them, lacked the principle of refined humanity, they held this rustic and rough time to be Saturn's, so that mortal kind, placed at the beginnings of life in imitation of this star, might harden itself in a rustic way of life and in the inhuman harshness of savagery.
[12] After Saturn, Jupiter received power over the times (for the Moon joins itself to it second), so that, the horror of the former squalor abandoned and the savagery of rustic living set aside, a more cultivated life might be restored to men, with their manners purified. Third, the Moon, joining itself to Mars, handed over to it power over the times, so that mortal kind, having entered on the right road of life and now composed by a certain moderation of humanity, might conceive all the ornaments of the arts and crafts.
[13] After Mars, Venus received the time of dominion; and because the learning of men, growing by degrees, also conceived the ornaments of wisdom, they held this time, in which learned speech refined the manners of men and in which men were formed by natural knowledge of the several disciplines, to be Venus's, so that, advanced by the majesty of a joyful and salutary divinity, they might govern their wandering actions under the instruction of providence.
[14] The last time they thought should be given to Mercury, to which the Moon joins itself last of all. What could be found more subtle than this arrangement? Once rustic pursuits had been refined, the arts discovered, and the disciplines set in order, the striving of the human race sharpened itself through diverse activities; and because the restless mind in man cannot keep to one course of life, out of various institutions and confused customs the wickedness of malice grew, and in this time the race of men both invented and handed down, by criminal contrivances, the outrages of a life of crime. For this reason they thought the last time should be handed to Mercury, so that the race of men, bent on imitating this star, might conceive the full power of malice.
[15] From these things, then, which were done in order, and from all the things that brought about the change of the times for the men who followed, the nativity of the world was composed by a divine interpretation of conjecture; and thus far both the origin and the course of the human race are handed down to us, so that this might be the model we follow in the nativities of men. But lest anything seem to have been passed over by us, everything must be explained that proves man to have been formed in imitation and likeness of the world.

For this reason they thought the last time should be handed to Mercury, so that the race of men, bent on imitating this star, might conceive the full power of malice.
[15] From these things, then, which were done in order, and from all the things that brought about the change of the times for the men who followed, the nativity of the world was composed by a divine interpretation of conjecture; and thus far both the origin and the course of the human race are handed down to us, so that this might be the model we follow in the nativities of men. But lest anything seem to have been passed over by us, everything must be explained that proves man to have been formed in imitation and likeness of the world.

[16] That the apocatastasis takes place through pyrosis and through cataclysm we too have said, and it is confirmed by all. The substance of the human body, too, when the course of life is complete, is dissolved in a similar way; and whenever the body of man, by the natural burning of heat [lacuna] too much loosened, evaporates through floods of the humors, it is thus always either consumed by fiery burning or dissolved by excessive sweating. Nor do the most wise interpreters of the art of medicine declare that the substance of the human race is dissolved by a natural end in any other way than when either moisture has dissolved the fire, or, heat in turn prevailing, the blood has been extinguished to the marrow and dried up. Thus in every way nature, the craftsman, composed man in imitation of the world, so that whatever either dissolves or forms the substance of the world should also form and dissolve man.
[17] Why they wished the twelve signs to begin from Aries must also now be explained, since in the book of instruction this question could not be explained unless the nativity of the world had been shown, and that I ought not to have explained in the book of instruction, lest this exposition, with its obscure interpretation, should confuse the untrained minds of the learner.
[18] So, re-examining the nativity of the world which, as we said, was most wisely composed by the wisest of men, I found that the Midheaven of the nativity is placed in Aries. On this account, then, because the Midheaven frequently, or rather always, holds the chief rule in all nativities, and because this place lies above the first vertex, and because from this place we gather the foundations of the whole nativity, the beginning of all the signs was fittingly given from this sign, especially since the greater part of the planets, and indeed both lights, that is, the Sun and the Moon, have sent their rays into this sign. For all these reasons it is fitting that the beginning of the stars should start from this sign [text uncertain].
[19] Now, since these things have been said and shown, we must define what each planet decrees when placed in each of the places of the nativity. And although some think this discussion platic, it nevertheless sets the learner's mind in order through easy instruction, so that the astrologer is not, as if set in darkness, thrown into disorder by the stumbling confusion of error. But although some think these things are defined platically, many things will also be stated partilely in this book. For the planets will have their full efficacy only when they are placed partilely in each of their places.
