XXV. Chapter: On Beginning to Launch a Ship into the Water.

To those who long to sail you may speak these truths.

[1] When no malefic, nor yet a benefic, testifies to the Moon, and she herself is carried above the earth, passing through the first degrees of Aries up to the tenth, so you may judge a fair voyage: that ship will go on its way and set out well and soundly.

[2] In Taurus there will be a great storm, and waves will meet the ship on the way; and let no malefic look at her, since a grievous end always attends the work for these: if the malefics regard the Moon while she is in Taurus, it signifies the ship's destruction in those waves.

[3] In Gemini, when someone puts to sea from the eighth degree, the homecoming will be long, but pleasant: the ship will bring what is in it to its goal and be profitable, but delay and slowness will enter into its return and homecoming.

[4] Cancer, again, will vex them with many calms, yet he will arrive unharmed wherever he wishes: no waves will strike the ship, it will come through safely, and its people will profit by it.

[5] If the Moon happens to be descending through grim Leo, there will be some danger on the sea for this man, and a destructive planet, testifying, will add pains upon pains: a calamity will befall the people in the ship, and if the Moon is afflicted, it will add calamity upon calamity for them.

[6] The grain-bearing Virgin, indeed, will bring the men no swift voyage, and the return will be neither easy nor quick.

[7] If the Moon is in Libra, from its beginning up to ten degrees, there is no good in travel by land or by sea, for it is bad; but if she has passed ten degrees of it, it is not bad for travel by sea or by land: the traveller will find no fault with the watery path, nor with anything else, even if he is going home.

[8] When the Moon is in Scorpio she will make their affairs on the sea safe, and they will come safely through the sea and its calamities; but she is wont to trouble the soul, and the ship's people will meet with such terror that it takes their breath away.

[9] Sagittarius drags storm and other fears in its train: misfortune and calamity will befall the ship from the waves.

[10] Capricorn gives fair sailing when the Moon has passed nine degrees of it, yet it too brings some disturbance to the heart: the people of the ship will meet with such terror that it takes their breath away.

[11] Aquarius is sluggish: trouble, slowness, and delay will enter into their return, but the end is not to be blamed.

[12] In Pisces it signifies dangers and calamity and misfortune, and illness besides, especially if Thouros (Mars) looks on with baleful testimony; guard the ship's mast.

[13] The Moon signifies all of this when neither the benefics nor the malefics regard her.

[14] I shall explain to you something besides this.

[15] Look: if the Moon is under the earth and the benefics or the malefics regard her, it is bad.

[16] If the Moon is under the earth with Saturn, Saturn being stationary and in one sign with the Moon, or the Moon is applying to the stationary Saturn or square to him, and the launching of the ship into the water is at that hour, it signifies that great pains and a great and severe calamity will enter upon them; terrible terror and violent waves will befall them, so that the water enters the ship, and those of the ship's people on whom death and destruction have been decreed perish in the sea, or in the water, in those waves.

[17] If the Moon is above the earth, and Saturn, stationary, regards the Moon from trine, it signifies that the people of the ship will throw much of the goods in it into the water in the hope of saving themselves, and even so they will barely escape, after severe toil and hardship.

[18] If the Moon is above the earth and Saturn, not being stationary, regards the Moon from trine, it signifies a terrible matter, as though they stood on the edge of a razor; yet even in that terror they are better off than when Saturn is stationary, and only a little harm reaches them.

[19] If Saturn in this condition is with Mercury, the terror increases in severity and dreadfulness, the more so if Mercury too is stationary; and if the benefics regard Saturn, that calamity will be lighter and easier, especially if the benefics regard Saturn from his right and from a strong place.

[20] Saturn in the Ascendant does the like of these, even apart from the round-eyed Moon: as I described the position of Saturn in these positions, so is his condition if Saturn is in the Ascendant, even though he does not regard the Moon.

[21] And if he is in the sign in which he was when the man fell from his mother, and that sign has become the Ascendant, or if he is in trine or in square to that sign, or right opposite it, then it would be most terrible and severe.

[22] If Mars has the same kind of position as I described for Phainon, Mars being under the earth while the Moon goes through the upper hemisphere, that is, going to the tenth from him, and Mars strikes her, it signifies evils above all; but the terror and the calamity are not from water and waves, as I described for the position of Saturn, but on account of clamour, quarrelling, and every trouble from which enmity arises among the people of that ship, and from enemies who are at sea: hatreds and factions in the ship itself, even to bloodshed.

[23] It also signifies that severe wounds will befall them, their joints will be broken, their blood will flow, and the like.

[24] This is made more severe and dreadful if Mercury is with Mars; but if the benefics regard, the evils are lessened.

[25] When Pyroeis and Phainon together, and Hermes as a third, regard the Moon while she is above the earth, one from one place and another from another, or all from the same place, then comes hateful and inescapable destruction: that calamity is terrible, and there is no turning it aside and no escape from it for them.

[26] Likewise baneful Ares mixed with Stilbon signifies the like.

[27] If Kronos and Ares regard, the one the Sun and the other the Moon, they foretell unseemly and grievous things for them too: a severe and terrible terror befalls them, and more terrible if their regard is from opposition.

[28] When the Sun and the Moon are not afflicted, and Zeus, from the square, sees the fair-horned Moon going above the earth, then the voyage will be good, and it is good for beginning to launch the ship into the water and the sea: business and the hopes they hold in their heart will follow them, their works will be successful, easy, and sound, and the good they hoped for and laboured at will not be cut off, but they will obtain it, by God's leave.

[29] And much more so when lovely Cytherea looks on together with the Aegis-bearer; and even if she regards the Moon from another sign, she will then bestow many things such as have been said, adding great good to the matter.

[30] Whichever planet Mercury is with, benefic or malefic, he increases its strength in the share of good or evil that God has decreed.

[31] If the Moon is above the earth and Venus alone regards her, Queen Cypris, even by herself, looking at the swift Moon, will give good things and some quick benefits, a calm voyage, and the dalliance of women: no waves and no calamity will befall them on that journey of theirs, and they will be granted profit and good in it; but it is not like the regard of Jupiter and Venus together, for Venus alone is weak: without Zeus she helps less, and with Zeus she helps more.

[32] If the Moon and Venus are both in one sign under the earth, and Venus is under the beams, it signifies that no waves will meet them on that journey and the ship will reach the destination they want without calamity; for Venus under the beams, under the earth with the Moon, gives fair weather and windlessness, though those who put to sea are delayed on the voyage.

[33] If Jupiter and Venus both regard the Sun and the Moon, and the Moon is with Mercury, it signifies that beginning at that hour to launch the ship into the water or the sea is the best of beginnings, and there is none better: when the governors of good things, together with Hermes, become witnesses to the two lights, the Sun and the Moon, there will be no better voyage than this.

[34] When planets of evil counsel are in the Ascendant and those that hem in well are with the swift Moon, or the other way round (that is, when the malefics are with the Moon and the benefics in the Ascendant), they make the sea unlucky: that ship will suffer a calamity from the sea, but its people will escape from that fear, by God's leave and decree.

[35] If the Moon, without the regard of the benefics and void of course, is in an angle and in one of the signs named at the beginning of this book, in which it is good for the Moon to be, and the Ascendant holds one of those signs with a benefic, it is good, by God's leave.

[36] If the Moon and the Ascendant are empty of the benefics and the malefics, none of them regarding them, and are void of course, let the beginning of launching the ship into the water and the sea be when the Ascendant and the Moon are in one of the signs that I have chosen and approved for beginning this matter, namely Taurus, Gemini, Pisces, Capricorn, Cancer, Virgo, and Sagittarius; then there is no harm for those who put to sea.

Above all, one must see that the Moon is not harmed in any of the ways set out in the chapter on the corruption of the Moon.

[37] If you want to set out on a ship and want to examine the beginning of that matter, the consideration of its beginning is when the ship is first loosed and pushed off into the water, that is, when the sailors draw the anchor out of the sand; and the beginning of each one who boards it is when the man first sets his foot in it.

[38] When the ship and its people reach the land to which they were bound, the consideration of the beginning of the arrival of the ship and of its people should be a single one.

[39] Look into the beginning of a journey by land or by sea: if a man wants to travel by land, and the Moon falls in the seventh, not in a dry sign, and the dry signs have the malefics in them or the malefics regard them; or if he wants to travel by sea, and the Moon is not in a watery sign or a sign of watery nature, and the malefics are in it or regard it, then the beginning of that journey by land or by sea is not good, and what is hateful and hardship will befall him.

[40] If the Moon is afflicted but the benefics are in the dry signs of the land, or regard those signs, it signifies that most likely no calamity will befall them on that journey, and if one befalls them, it will be less than I mentioned.

[41] If the people of that journey are among those on whom death has not been decreed and whose years have not run out, they will return to their homes; and if hardship befalls them, it will be less than I mentioned.

[42] Of the malefic planets the most harmful are Mars when the traveller travels by land, and Saturn on the sea and the water;

[43] and they are most harmful when Jupiter and Venus do not regard them. The worst is when the Moon is in the terms and the face of the malefics, a malefic regards the Moon from opposition or square, and neither Jupiter nor Venus, both or either, regards the Moon.

[42] Of the malefic planets the most harmful are Mars when the traveller travels by land, and Saturn on the sea and the water;

[42] 凶星之中最为害的:陆行时是火星,海上、水上是土星;

[43] and they are most harmful when Jupiter and Venus do not regard them. The worst is when the Moon is in the terms and the face of the malefics, a malefic regards the Moon from opposition or square, and neither Jupiter nor Venus, both or either, regards the Moon.

寿数已尽whose term has come命定当死之人
