VI. On Finding the Sign in the Ascendant and the Ascendant Degree.

The zodiacal Ascendant is grasped by day from the degrees of the Sun counted off from the solar sign, one degree to each sign; wherever the count ends, that sign is in the Ascendant for the Moon [text uncertain], as is the sign of like kind to it and the diurnal or nocturnal semicircle. If the single degree somehow falls into a nocturnal sign when the nativity is diurnal, the sign opposite to it or its square will be in the Ascendant; by night one must likewise count off the single degree of the Moon from the Moon herself.

Otherwise. One must cast out the dodecatemory of the Sun from the left trine; wherever it ends, that sign will be in the Ascendant, or the sign of like kind.

同类的星座sign of like kind同为阳性或阴性

Otherwise, for the compulsory method. As long as the Sun is present in the conjunctional sign while the Moon is passing through the sign that follows the conjunction, the Ascendant is in the conjunctional sign, or in the sextiles, trines, or opposition of the Moon, at least from her inclination, from which the test is found. When the Moon happens to be with the Sun and is angular, if the Sun has passed beyond the conjunctional sign of the Moon while she is still passing through the first circle, the Ascendant will be found in the squares of the Moon or in the unconnected sign. If someone knows beforehand whether it was night or day, but without the hour, one must judge two signs to be in the Ascendant.

VII. On Male and Female Nativity and on Monsters or Four-Footed Creatures.

In every nativity one must examine where the dodecatemory of the Moon has fallen; and if it is in a feminine sign and its lord in a feminine sign, one should say that the nativity is for the most part female. If it happens to be masculine, one should reckon an addition and subtraction of the hour, as much as allows the masculine dodecatemory to be in the Ascendant, calculating from the table of rising times. One must also examine the opposite dodecatemory; and if the dodecatemory, or the one opposite to it, or their lords, fall into a bestial sign, one should declare a monster or an irrational creature.

For example, let the Moon be in Pisces, degree 19; the dodecatemory is in Libra, a masculine sign of human form, and the nativity is male. Its lady, Venus, is in Sagittarius; the hour has neither addition nor subtraction, since it has fallen into a sign of human form. I take, then, the lords of Libra and of Aries, Venus and Mars; Mars was in Virgo and Venus in Sagittarius; and the Ascendant, calculated from the table of rising times according to the given Ascendant, was found in Leo, degree 15. I cast out dodecatemories from this as far as Mars and Venus, and the one nearest to the Ascendant degree, Leo 15, I take as lady of the single degree. As far as Mars in Virgo, then, from Leo degree 15, the interval comes to 55; into the 15 I count off two further dodecatemories as far as Scorpio; they come to 16 degrees; for Venus was found in Sagittarius, so that if we give Sagittarius too a part of the dodecatemory, they will be 12; these degrees are nearest to Leo 15. Since, then, the dodecatemory comes nearest, one must seek the single degree of Venus in Leo at about degrees 11, 12, and 13, and take that as the Ascendant.

Since, then, the dodecatemory comes nearest, one must seek the single degree of Venus in Leo at about degrees 11, 12, and 13, and take that as the Ascendant.

Otherwise. The Sun always shows the magnitude of the day and of the hour according to the sign in which he happens to be present. From the hour the Ascendant is constituted, from the Ascendant the degree, and from this the exact degree of the Ascendant, growing out of and guided by one another and making one another firm, especially in the case of those born by day. For those born by night one must take the remaining degrees of the Sun, and the degrees left over [text uncertain] will hold those assigned to the thirties. If some error regarding the Ascendant is supposed, one must enter the table of rising times according to the arrangement of the chart and examine the magnitude of the hour, how great an interval of the numbers it covers, and, adding to the clime-inclination and subtracting according to the supposed error, judge the degree found to be the Ascendant; for this degree, by a mere point, through the deviation of each nativity, shows the test. From here the account of the ripeness of the hour is revealed in mystic fashion; for not every nativity will hold the same eastern part or an equal interval, but sometimes one that revolves to a length, sometimes 2 or 3 signs, and sometimes none at all. If anyone wishes also to know beforehand the fraction of the Ascendant degree, it will be graspable from the degree itself that has been found, as we showed in the earlier book as well. And now let us remind you of it more clearly: having counted by degrees the interval from the conjunction to the Moon at the delivery, double the number; the first number, released upward from the conjunctional degree, shows the eastern part, and the second, downward from the conjunction, the western part. One must therefore take the interval from the eastern degree to the western and examine what fraction of the 360 the sum collected makes; and that fraction of the hour the nativity carries in addition to the completed hours. In the same way one must cast out the number of the months from the Ascendant degree, upward and downward, toward the eastern and the western hemisphere.

Otherwise. Each of the lots on its own shows the Ascendant degree; for example, if the Lot of Fortune has fallen broadly in some sign; but according to the reckoning by degree of the Moon one will count off the degrees, for instance from the Moon to the Sun, and give the resulting number from the lot in the upward direction; wherever it ends, that will be in the Ascendant. Likewise the Daemon too, in general, for both nocturnal and diurnal nativities, will operate by sign for the comparison, but by degree according to the Sun; then one must count thus: by day from the Sun to the Moon and the equal amount from the Daemon in the upward direction, by night from the Moon to the Sun and the equal amount from the Daemon in the downward direction, or from the Sun to the Moon and the equal amount from the Daemon in the upward direction; in both ways the result has its ending at the same place. This, then, will be judged the productive degree; and the comparison of what is sought according to the method set out will be grasped from the table of rising times and the deviation: one must reckon for how long a time the magnitude of the hour has been taken up, adding to the clime-inclination or subtracting, how great the interval of the degrees is; and, adding these again to the productive degree found before or subtracting them, take that as the Ascendant. Hence the positions of the inhabited regions, being measured differently at different times according to the deviation of the horizon, show no ordinary difference, and those born in Rome will not live the same periods as those in Babylon, nor others as others; but sometimes the difference will be found to be least, sometimes greatest, sometimes excessive. For if one hour, by rising beyond another, has ten thousand times the power, even of a day, how should not one clime have more than another, because of the shadows of the earth and the wanderings off the road and the stations of the Sun with respect to the horizons? But these things are hard to attain and nonsense to most people, while to the wise the effects that come about are the proof of what has been set out.

Otherwise. Adding together the degrees of the Sun and of the Moon, one should take them as the productive gnomon and the degree that holds things together, and as effective according to the judgment of the one who presides; then, beginning from degree 1 of the sign thought to be in the Ascendant, make the two lots, until the Sun and the Moon become equal in number. For of necessity two degrees must be in the Ascendant for each sign, or sometimes even 3, when the whole number of the Sun and the Moon ends at the beginning of the sign, in the middle, or at the end; for the addition and division made according to equinoctial time will show the agreement of the degrees. Likewise in the case of the Sun and the Moon; for the Moon passes through the sign in two and a half days. The gnomon, then, being cut in two, returns to the same agreement. For nature, sending to us the emanations from the immortal elements, brings about the cosmic fastening together and quietly fashions all things, without reward and without variation [text uncertain], and, not overstepping the bounds of the law laid down, governs the cosmos; and serving the cosmic powers, and roused out of sleep [text uncertain] and revolving into a long age, the generations of men and of animals and the kinds of plants and crops she in part destroys and consumes and brings to oblivion, and in part, begetting and nourishing, renews again; and there is nothing everlasting and prolonged in the abiding of things on earth, nor yet perishable and desolate, so that the earth too, being bereft, should take on the stamp of shapelessness; but, governed by the heavenly bodies and rejoicing in the goods about her and bearing splendour, and transformed by kinds of colours, she is made beautiful; for none of the elements in the cosmos is without shape. The sea too, exercised by the ebbs and the winds, they renew, and on account of its colour sailing is restored, and it is heaped up with streams from the land, and though always flooding it never ceases, nor yet floods beyond its nature, but, poured back into itself with countless billows, seems to stand still, though it is without fixed footing; and, nourishing in its gulfs and hollows a multitude of swimming fishes, it fashions some from sea-monsters [text uncertain], some for the use of men, and some as food for one another. Nor yet is the air, which seems to be seen as empty, idle and inactive; but, guided by the winds and quickly transformed, it is seen as varied, and unnoticed it produces for us the vital breath with good tempering, and the form of all kinds of winged creatures, dancing in it, provides a throng and delight for the beholding. And so, among the elements, according to the natural account, one coming to be from another and being reshaped, and possessing its own beauty and use, displays the cosmic structure; for nothing, remaining by itself, has the advantage of another, but is useless and harmful; but when blended with another it brings about good tempering and, being used throughout by all, is not used up; and, as we see, the earth seems to be arbiter over the rest, holding all things as their forebear.
