第三章　论界

The first 6 degrees of Aries belong to Jupiter [text uncertain]: they are temperate, vigorous, of many seeds, beneficent. The 6 after them belong to Venus: cheerful, skilled in the arts, radiant, sound, clean, of good complexion. The following degrees belong to Mercury: ambivalent, changeable and of good natural gifts, immovable, windy, hail-bringing, thundery, hurling thunderbolts. The 5 of Mars are destructive, fiery, unstable, of men who are criminal, reckless, and [lacuna]. The next 5, of Saturn, are very cold, barren, envious, causing injury.

白羊的最初六度属木星〔原文疑有讹误〕：温和、强健、多种子、行善。其后六度属金星：愉快、精于技艺、光亮、健全、洁净、肤色好。接下来的度数属水星：两可、易变而天资好、不动、多风、带冰雹、多雷、掷霹雳。火星的五度有毁坏性、火热、不安定，属于作恶、鲁莽、〔此处原文有缺〕的人。接下来土星的五度极冷、不育、嫉妒、致伤损。

Of Taurus, the first 8 belong to Venus: of many seeds, prolific, moist, descending, more given to [text uncertain]. The next 6, of Mercury: intelligent, prudent, criminal, of little seed, ill-looking, death-dealing. The next 8, of Jupiter: high-minded, manly, lucky, fit to rule and beneficent, great-souled, temperate, lovers of modesty. The fourth, 5 of Saturn: wholly barren, without offspring, eunuch-like, mendicant, blameworthy, theatrical, cheerless, toilsome. The 3 last of all, of Mars: masculine, tyrannical, fiery, harsh, murderous, temple-robbing, utterly wicked, yet not obscure, except that they are destructive and not long-lived.

Of Gemini, the first 6 belong to Mercury: temperate, fair-weathered, intelligent, skilled in many arts, scientific, practical, celebrated in song, of many seeds. The next 6, of Jupiter: competitive, temperate, fair-weathered, of many seeds, well-nourished, beneficent. The third, 5 of Venus: blooming, musical, fond of performances, poetic, crowned, of the crowd, cheerful, of many seeds. The fourth, 7 of Mars: toilsome, without brothers, with few children, given to sojourning, well-off, destructive, savage, meddlesome. The next 6, last of all, of Saturn: temperate, administrative, acquisitive, intellectual, widely known, distinguished, outstanding in intelligence, accomplishers of great things, most glorious.

Of Cancer, the first 7 belong to Mars: hurling thunderbolts, moved by other impulses [text uncertain], uneven, contrary in their counsels, frenzied, of many seeds, causing want, destructive, bad at the end. The next 6, of Venus: of many seeds, blameworthy, very moist, changeable, skilled, of the crowd, and thoroughly mixed. The following 6, of Mercury: exact, rapacious, leaders in public affairs, tax-farming, popular, well-off, wealthy. The fourth, 7 of Jupiter: royal, imperial, glorious, given to many lawsuits, high-minded, temperate, fit to rule, and fine on the whole. The 4 last of all, of Saturn, in which the whole is water: very moist, causing want of one's own possessions, and bringing need toward the end.

Of Leo, the first 6 are Jupiter's: experienced, masculine, imperial, and in every way fit to lead, practical, eminent, having nothing base. The next 5, of Venus: more temperate, relaxed, very wise, given to enjoyment. The third, 7 of Saturn: very experienced, inspiring fear, natural philosophers, gifted, straitened, given to the mysteries, with many children, seekers after hidden things, yet barren and without seed. The next 6, of Mercury: fond of performances, of the crowd, heads of schools, narrators, versed in law, intelligent; these too are without seed, but belong to long-lived men. The last 6 of all, of Mars: most worthless, monstrous, destructive, causing injury, sluggish, blameworthy, and unfortunate.

狮子的最初六度属木星：有经验、阳刚、帝王般、处处宜于领导、讲实干、出众、毫无卑下之处。接下来五度属金星：更温和、松弛、极有智慧、好享受。第三段，土星的七度：极有经验、令人畏惧、研究自然之学、天资好、局促、投身秘仪、多子女、探求隐秘之事，却不育、无种子。接下来六度属水星：爱好表演、属群众、学校的主持者、讲述者、通晓法律、聪慧；这些也无种子，却属于长寿的人。最后的六度属火星：最为卑劣、怪异、有毁坏性、致伤损、迟钝、该受指责、不幸。

Of Virgo, the first 7 degrees belong to Mercury: most exalted, administrative, very wise, equitable, setting men over great affairs, most intelligent, and noble and eminent in everything; only in matters of love they are not fortunate. This holds in general of the whole of Virgo, but above all of these degrees and of those of Venus; for these belong to men who are easily accused, and those of Venus to men who err. In everything they will above all betray what is eminent in education [text uncertain]. The next 10, of Venus: blameworthy, erring in marriage and falling into misfortune on that account, but fortunate in theatrical matters; in their passions most shameful, above all when Saturn testifies with them; with Mercury, adulteries; with Jupiter, a multitude of sins as though they were permitted, and condemnations besides; with the Sun, secret deeds; with the Moon, oppositions and political rivalries; and if the place is seen by the malefics, it makes them leaders. The third, 4 of Jupiter: of men fond of farming, equitable, retiring, not uneducated; they are also fit for guardianships, of many seeds, and successful. The fourth, 7 of Mars, are masculine and harsh, of popular demagogues and night-prowlers, [text uncertain], forgers, assailants; these degrees outrage men and lead them into chains, mutilations, tortures, and prisons. The remaining 2, of Saturn: monstrous, very cold, destructive, short-lived, of men who are mocked.

Of Libra, the first 6 belong to Saturn: royal, lofty, effective above all by day, but by night of men who [text uncertain]; they are barren, very moist, destructive. The next 5, of Mercury: of the marketplace, of workshops, mercantile, compilers of contractual documents and of accounts, in general just and intelligent. The third, 8 of Jupiter: wealth-making, but cheerless in the case of those who fare badly; of men who hoard, are inconspicuous, live squalidly, have no love of beauty, and find fault; nor are they blessed with children. The fourth, 7 of Venus: of lovers of beauty and lovers of art, or even artisans, such as modellers, painters, and engravers, and in general of men of rhythm, god-fearing, gentle, prospering slowly, advanced without effort, greatly fortunate in marriage, happy in everything. The remaining 4, of Mars: of commanders and taxiarchs fortunate in every art of Mars, and [text uncertain], steady, self-controlled, and high-minded, but not well-off in brothers nor having many brothers.

Of Scorpio, the first 7 degrees are Mars's: troubled, easily moved, unstable, irascible, free-tongued, high-minded, with few children and many brothers, uneven in fortune, fiery, well suited to nativities bound for military service and travel abroad. The next 4, of Venus: of men fortunate in marriage, god-fearing, loved by all, fond of their children, well-off, chosen out above all, living pleasantly. The third, 8 of Mercury: martial, competitive, of men who wear crowns and contend in bitter speeches, not to be despised; these too are of many seeds; in general of men malicious in mind, especially against those who try them or who do wicked things. The fourth, 6 of Jupiter: of men skilled in many arts, fortunate, high priests, glorified with gold, purple, and offices according to the particular greatness of the nativities, beneficent, in general humane and god-loving. The last 6 of all, of Saturn: of men given to punishing, with few children and few brothers, haters of their own kin, poisoners, melancholics, haters of women, having hidden injuries, in general most punitive and most querulous; they are hated by gods and by men; these men set themselves against those above them, and are despised by the lowly.

Of Sagittarius, the first 12 are Jupiter's, of practical men; they are moist as well as temperate, and altogether very varied in every art and action, of many seeds and with many children and many brothers, but causing want. The next 5 are Venus's: temperate, glorious, victorious, crowned, god-fearing, of men honored among crowds and before governors, blessed in children and in brothers, and accustomed to be with many women [lacuna]. The third, 4 degrees of Mercury: of men fond of learning, over-clever, men of affairs, philosophers who beget everlasting works, in general eminent in knowledge and understanding, lovers of history, when Mercury inclines toward them; but when Mars does, lovers of arms and tacticians. The next 5 fall to Saturn: making barren and causing injury, very cold, harmful, of base men who are unfortunate in everything. The next 4 are Mars's: hot, reckless, insolent, shameless, destructive, except that they have great mobility in everything. And all the degrees in Sagittarius are varied in all matters.

Of Capricorn, the first 7 are Mercury's: theatrical, satyric, mimetic, lying, whorish, procuring, covetous of other people's goods and disreputable, ungifted in everything yet agreeable and well-off, though not lofty. The next 7, of Jupiter: setting men amid rises and falls of glory and disrepute, of wealth and poverty, of donations and theatrical shows; barren, begetting females or monsters, mean-spirited, private. The next 8, of Venus: of men who are prodigal, lustful and sensual, undiscerning, blameworthy, changeable toward their ends, not dying easily, nor stable in marriage. The fourth, 4 of Saturn: austere, cheerless, changeable, unlucky in children and in brothers, savage, destructive, very cold, unsociable, envious, procrastinating, and treacherous. The last 4 of all, of Mars: lofty, authoritative, tyrannical, conferring leadership in everything, depriving men of their own kin and destroyers of men, travelling abroad, amorous, quarrelsome to the end.

The next six, of Venus: of men well loved, god-fearing, prospering without toil, suddenly fortunate, well-off, seafaring; these degrees are of many seeds, and it happens that one born in them has intercourse with old women or with the maimed or with eunuchs, and is advanced by the seedless or by the elderly. The next 7, of Jupiter: fortunate, petty, retiring, not fond of glory, inconspicuous, blessed in children, not fond of their brothers. The next 5, of Mars: causing injury, above all to the inner parts, busied with lawsuits; of wicked men, feeble and enfeebled, but quick to set their hand to evil. The remaining 5, of Saturn: barren, very moist, slow to beget, causing injury, above all to the membranes and the inner organs, and causing dropsies and convulsions; causing want, with few brothers and few children, envious, not fortunate at the end.

Of Pisces, the first 12 belong to Venus: cheerful, of many seeds, sensual, given to enjoyment and to pleasant living, joyful, charming, lovable, advancing men without effort, dear to the gods. The next 4, of Jupiter: of men fond of learning, scientific, conspicuous among crowds and surpassing all in speech; with many brothers, prolific, with many children, with superfluous limbs, with an excess of brothers. The next 3, of Mercury: of many seeds, fit to rule, of honored men, with many friends, gracious, fond of rearing, merciful, god-loving, temperate. The 9 of Mars are effective, sea-fighters, leaders, and stout-hearted, doers of unspeakable things, rapacious and again generous, varied, not dying a natural death. The 2 last of all, of Saturn: causing injury, very moist, convulsive, unfortunate in everything.

双鱼的最初十二度属金星：愉快、多种子、耽于肉欲、好享受、生活愉悦、欢喜、讨人喜爱、可爱、使人不费力而升迁、为神所爱。接下来四度属木星：属于爱好学问、有学识、在群众中出众、在言辞上胜过众人的人；兄弟多、多产、子女多、肢体多余、兄弟过多。接下来三度属水星：多种子、宜于统治、属于受尊重、朋友多、和蔼、爱养育、仁慈、爱神、温和的人。火星的九度讲实干，是海战者、领袖、心志坚强，做出不可言说之事，贪婪掠夺而又慷慨，多样，不得自然而死。最后的两度属土星：致伤损、极湿、多抽搐、事事不幸。

Having thus set out by way of instruction what each single degree brings about, let us add that when the ruler lies upon them it will bring about its own effect, whether bad or good [text uncertain]. Now I shall set out the matter of the Ascendant.
