XXVII. On Active and Inactive Periods, and on Life from the Angles and Succedent Places [text uncertain].

第二十七章　论有作为与无作为的时期，以及由四角与续宫而来的生命〔原文疑有讹误〕。

The periods of good fortune or misfortune, of reversals and of success, are to be grasped from the rising time of each sign or from the cyclical period of the planet. For those inquiring into the periods of life must attend to the Ascendant and the Moon, or to the sign in which their lords are present; for action and glory, to the Lot of Fortune and the Daemon, to the Sun or the conjunction or the full moon, and to the exaltation and its lord. Those that are upon the Ascendant will begin to be lords of the first period in the first account, then those at the Midheaven, or in the setting place, or in the IC. If these places happen to be empty, those upon the succedent places; and if these too happen to be empty, those in the cadent places, which, even if they are not so strong, will nevertheless manage affairs. Those that have declined from the Ascendant or the Midheaven will allot first, and only then those in the remaining cadent places; not, however, the complete rising times or periods, but in proportion to how great a part of the sign they are able to occupy, so great a part also of the period and of the rising time. For those upon the angles or the succedent places that are configured in fitting positions and found oriental, and above all those that have a relation to the affairs of the nativity, whatever they may be, will, when they are masters of the places set out above, allot both the rising time of the sign and their own period, or the lords will allot the rising time and period of the signs in which they are present.

Likewise those inquiring into the remaining places and their masters must compare the periods, for example concerning livelihood, brothers, parents, children, and the rest, and the planets that do harm or bring benefit, and what each is able to bring about, so that we do not write about the same things many times over; for their natures have been set out, and we shall remind the reader again in what follows. First, then, one must allot the least period of the lord and that of the planet lying upon the place, and only then the rising time of the sign, or of the sign in which the lord is; and besides, as we said before, one must examine the rulers of the triplicity. For if both fall well, the periods will be glorious and beneficial; if partly, then partly likewise; but if they fall out of the favourable places, the nativity will be subject to reversals from beginning to end, or will be overturned by griefs and dangers, unless the Lot of Fortune or its lord, being configured in a fitting position, establishes the nativity in prosperity and glory according to its own substance. If two or more planets happen to be in one sign, the period of each, completed on its own, will be effective, but the effect will be shown by the blending of the two or three planets; likewise the rising time of the sign, completed on its own and again together with the period of the planet lying upon it or of its lord, will be effective. If somehow from the rising times and the periods such periods of benefic or malefic planets or signs coincide, both will come to pass at that time, the bad and the good.

XXVIII. On Foreign Travel, from the Writings of Hermippus.

The place of foreign travel, which is hard to grasp, neither Petosiris nor the well-known King set out in their treatises, or they said only this about this place: "In the periods, if any of the malefics has its phase, it will put the nativity amid foreign travel and troubles." This is true; but beyond these words they have nothing else on the place of foreign residence. The most admirable Abram, however, in his books has shown us [text uncertain] this place, having himself also discovered and tested other things of his own, especially in the nativities of travellers, which have the following theorems. The luminaries setting; Mars regarding the Lot of Fortune in the place cadent from the Midheaven; or the Moon or most of the planets in the subterranean hemisphere; or if the lord of Fortune is found in the Lot of Foreign Travel or its place, or is in opposition to them, or Fortune itself falls where the Lot of Foreign Travel is, and Mars either lies upon the lot or regards the place: these make nativities given to travel; likewise if Mars regards Fortune or the Daemon [text uncertain].

XXIX. On Foreign Travel.

The Lot of Foreign Travel is counted from Saturn to Mars and the equal amount from the Ascendant. These theorems make nativities given to movement; but at what seasons and in what periods such nativities will have their journeys abroad will be shown by the configurations stated by Abram. We shall also add what I myself have observed; and let none of my readers blame us if we do not appropriate the labours and observations of others, as some do, but bear witness to these men. Let us come to the matter at hand.

In the division of the active periods according to Abram, which are allotted from the Daemon (for this is what allots), wherever the Lot of the Daemon falls in the nativity, look at the lord of the sign in which the lot is found, how many years its minor cycle amounts to, and allot these among the 12 signs, beginning the allotment from the Daemon itself and following the order of the signs; then, when its cycle has been completed, take the lord of the sign next after the Daemon; again see how many years its cycle amounts to, and allot its cycle in the same way; and then the next again, if the nativity has years of life remaining. If, then, the sign in which its periods fall has a place indicative of foreign travel, or the Lot of Foreign Travel, or the sign opposite it or in square to it, or if the planets later than the foundation of the nativity, especially malefics, fall away from the angles into the signs that receive the sub-allotment from it, they bring residence abroad. If the lord of the sign of the sub-allotment is away from the angles or turned away from the sign, being a malefic, it brings about residence abroad; and if it is angular, it will do so. Again, if malefics hold the sub-allotments, falling into [text uncertain] or in square, they bring residence abroad. If a benefic receives the sub-allotment itself, but in the nativity is found in opposition, it brings the native journeys and movements. Again, when the lords of the signs that hold the periods or the sub-division are turned away from the signs, or opposed, or overcome, or away from the angles, the signs bring residence abroad. When malefics in opposition regard the luminaries, especially in the Moon's or the Sun's signs, it brings about journeys abroad. If the lord of the sign in which the periods are is away from the angles or opposed to it, it brings either movements or journeys, if the Lot of Foreign Travel falls in that sign, or in the sign opposite it, or in square. But if it is in its own place or found in the squares, it does not give journeys. Mercury and Venus, however, do not give long journeys, but rather quick returns. If the two lots, that of Fortune and the Daemon, fall in one sign, while the Lot of Foreign Travel is opposed or in square to that sign, and some malefic is upon the place, natives are amid journeys. Likewise if the lord of the Lot of Foreign Travel is opposed to the planet that holds the periods or stands upon the Lot of Fortune, and if the two places, that of Fortune and that of the Daemon, fall opposed, it is either a cause of movement or puts the nativity amid journeys, especially in the signs away from the angles. And even if the signs in which the sub-allotments are are angular, or again if they have the places of foreign residence and the lot opposed or in square, they put the nativity amid journeys. Likewise, if it is in the subterranean hemisphere, it makes natives fond of travel. Again, if the Lot of Foreign Travel falls in the Ascendant, or at the Midheaven, or in the place succedent to the Midheaven, when the nativity is not by nature given to travel and does not have the configurations mentioned before, it does not make nativities of much travel, but natives travel rarely, especially when they do not have malefics opposed. And if the signs above the earth hold the periods or the sub-division of the periods, apart from the twelfth or the ninth sign, they do not give journeys abroad, provided that the lot does not fall in the same sign and that no malefic opposes it or stands upon the sign without benefics.

The signs below the earth that hold the periods do give them, especially when the Lot of Foreign Travel also falls in the signs below the earth. And again, if the lots, that of Fortune and that of Foreign Travel, have malefics standing upon them or opposed to them, they bring frequent journeys. If the lord of the Lot of Foreign Residence happens to be opposed to the sign that holds the periods, it will put the nativity amid travel. If the lord of the Lot of Foreign Travel falls together with the Lot of Fortune in the subterranean angle, it makes natives of much travel, especially when regarded or held by malefics or by a luminary. If the three-month period falls in one of the signs allotted to have the sub-allotments of the periods, it brings movements, especially if it has a malefic planet opposed, or the luminaries standing there, and likewise if it is in the cadent places above the earth. If a lesser sub-allotment is opposed, the nativity will have a passing journey. Planets overcoming, especially those in watery signs below the earth that hold sub-allotments, make journeys, especially if the signs have the luminaries or malefics lying upon them.

The configurations set out below will be especially effective if the year brought down from the place has for the native a movement of travel, or if from the foundation, from the outset, they have nativities especially given to travel. Wherever the sub-allotment of the general periods or their sub-division falls, if the lord of that sign, whether away from the angles or angular, does not have one of the malefics opposed [lacuna] of the signs, or if it lies upon the luminaries, departures take place. When they have them either angular or cadent, they give departures for travel; and the malefics standing upon the cadent signs or upon those that hold the periods or the sub-divisions give journeys, especially when the year has a movement. When the planet that holds the periods is found standing upon the place or the Lot of Foreign Residence, or the lord of the place of foreign residence is, it brings journeys, especially if it is a malefic in square or in opposition to the luminary without light. Likewise, if the sign that has a sub-allotment of the periods is opposed to the Lot of Foreign Travel, they give departures, especially in the cadent places. Again, if the sub-allotments of the periods fall in the cadent places, while the signs have no sign opposing or overcoming, they do not bring journeys, but one will endure a postponement of travel and an intention not carried out. When a benefic falls opposed to the malefics that hold the periods or the sub-allotment, or overcomes them, or they are present together in the signs below the earth, and a year of travel comes round, they bring postponements or hindrances of departures. If Fortune falls in the place of foreign residence, or the lots fall opposed to one another while a malefic stands upon them or opposes, it makes natives given to travel, unless a benefic is entwined with them or stands upon one of them. If the lord of foreign residence happens to be opposed to it without benefics, while Mars again falls opposed to the Lot of Fortune or to that of Foreign Residence and stands upon one of them, it puts the native amid considerable journeys. Again, if Mars, being lord of both lots, falls turned away from the signs that bring journeys, or in watery signs, it makes nativities given to travel. Mars, falling turned away from the Lot or from the Lot of Foreign Residence and being lord of neither of them, does not bring journeys, but makes natives spend most of their time in their homeland or suffer postponements of travel. Likewise, if the lots have benefics standing upon them, they do not make natives fond of travel, but rare travellers.

Configurations are to be found in a nativity that do not readily bring travel, since most nativities come to be given to travel, some in continual and varied journeys, others rarely and seldom, because in some the configurations that produce travel abound and in others they do not; whence some become great travellers, while others travel moderately and not continually. Those who have few configurations of travel in the nativity, if the lots of Foreign Travel and of Fortune in the nativity or in the counter-nativity fall toward good planets, do not have departures, especially when the year has no movement of travel; but if it has configurations such as I described before, they bring about journeys. Again, the Lot of Foreign Travel, being unconnected with that of Fortune, especially when one of the lots has a benefic, will not make natives fond of travel, but they will spend most of their time in their homeland. Mars turned away from the Lot of Foreign Residence makes small movements. When the Lot of Fortune has benefic planets lying upon it, they do not give journeys, especially when they fall above the earth. The Lot of Fortune, falling at the Midheaven and turned away from the Lot of Foreign Travel, having no malefic or luminary opposed, does not make nativities given to travel, but natives who spend their time in their homeland. If the two lots fall together, without Mars, in the place cadent from the Midheaven, in another sign, having no malefic opposed or standing upon them, natives do not readily come to travel. But the two lots, having malefics lying upon them or opposed, make natives great travellers, especially when the signs in which the lots are are watery. The Lot of Fortune falling well, having no malefic or planet overcoming it, or the luminaries, or the Lot of Foreign Travel, especially of the two [lacuna] lots, with Mars turned away, they do not give journeys; but one who wishes to travel does not set out. For if Jupiter comes by transit upon these signs, he prevents the departure. One travels especially if the year happens to fall in a place cadent from the Ascendant in watery signs, especially when no benefic stands upon it by transit or in the nativity; and when the lord of the periods hands over the year to the lord of the Lot of Foreign Travel, especially while a malefic regards, or conversely the lord of the lot to the planet that holds the periods.
