XXII. On Configurations of Several Planets.

Saturn, Jupiter, and the Sun are irregular and insecure with respect to acquisitions, friendships, and the other undertakings of affairs; for they bring about losses of what has been acquired and make natives fall into charges arising from envy; and after displaying benefits from unexpected sources or from the dead and increasing the native's glory, they bring about downfalls or charges, sudden dangers, and plots. They also bring about presidencies or guardianships of other people's affairs, tax-collecting or leases, on account of which natives undergo disturbances or lawsuits, and they make the substance of life uneven or fearful.

Saturn, Jupiter, and the Moon are in harmony, procuring glory and benefits, introductions to greater persons, and gifts; natives live in sojourns abroad, and in a foreign land or through foreigners they bring their undertakings to success, not only in their own affairs but also in those of others. They also receive benefits from women, and, coming into acquisitions, they become masters of foundations and lands; some, then, becoming shipowners, have increased their livelihood, or have managed their livelihood by handling things that are produced by means of water.

Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars bring about blendings of good things; some they make glorious, fit for high priesthood, fit to lead, fit for guardianships, presidents of crowds and of lands or of military affairs, giving commands and being obeyed, not so much adorned with display in their lives, but rolled about amid adversities, accusations, and violent affairs and living in fear. Others they make adorned with substance for their livelihood, masters of property and foundations, and benefited from the dead, but lesser in glory; hence matters will be judged according to the placements and the operations of the signs.

Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus are good and beneficial for business, acquisitive, bringing about introductions to men and women, friendships, advancements, and benefits from the dead; but they make natives blameworthy and envied in their intimacies and uneven in their unions, enduring coolings from time to time, and enmities or lawsuits. Yet they are fond of companionship and easy to live with, delighting in newer and many friendships; but as regards children and slaves they are not altogether settled, nor do they endure without grief.

Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury, when configured together, make natives active, stewards, trustworthy, presidents of crowds, giving commands and being obeyed, handlers of money and directors of accounts or calculations. Such natives, having a liberal and dissembling character, appear sometimes wicked and knavish, sometimes good and fine; they will be covetous of other people's goods and grasping, on account of which they will endure disturbances or lawsuits, debts, and notoriety among the crowd. But at times, carried along by success and trust in their business, they will receive benefits, and, deemed worthy of gifts and honors from greater persons and acquiring a generous bearing, they will benefit their own people and strangers; they will share in mysteries and in the affairs of others, and in other respects they will be curious and inventive, showing a simple manner.

Saturn, Mars, and the Sun signify violent, alien, and dangerous affairs; for they make natives bold and given to grand undertakings in their business, wicked, godless, betrayers, insubordinate, haters of their own kin, separated from their own land and living among foreigners, coming into abuse and dangers, suffering falls from a height or from four-footed beasts, or fears of fire, toil-worn in their undertakings, not keeping what they acquire, covetous of other people's goods, providing for themselves from evil sources, unless the configuration happens to be military or athletic; and so it is toilsome, yet not without activity.

Saturn, Mars, and the Moon make natives reckless in the undertakings of their business and noble, but unsuccessful in their affairs and turned about amid adversities and violent affairs. For they become violent, lovers of solitude, wicked, rapacious, with the manner of a brigand, falling into defences or lawsuits, and getting a taste of confinements and accusations, unless the nativity happens to be fond of the wrestling-ground or fond of arms, so that through this holding the configuration of confinement may be fulfilled; some, then, becoming injured or afflicted with disease, will meet a violent end.

Saturn, Mars, and Venus are suitable at first for business, friendships, or transactions, bringing about benefits, glory, and introductions; but later they become troubled and involved in lawsuits on account of certain rivalries and betrayals, on account of which they incur accusations, endure enmities toward men and women, are turned toward shameful reproaches or adulteries, and suffer notoriety and public exposure. Some, then, give themselves heedlessly to unlawful and indiscriminate intercourse, and, becoming accomplices in or plotters of wickedness or poisoning, they will endure no ordinary fear.

Saturn, Mars, and Mercury bring about wrongdoing and deceits, lawsuits and disturbances; turned about on account of writings or secret affairs, sureties or loans, natives endure no ordinary struggles and downfalls. Otherwise they make natives keen and intelligent in their business, passing through life in varied ways and ill spoken of by certain people on account of certain violent or unlawful deeds; sometimes, then, finding themselves amid toilsome or dangerous affairs and falling into want, they blame their own fortune and blaspheme against the gods, or become perjurers and godless. And if the planets fall unsuitably, they also cause accusations and confinements. But if they happen to be in productive places or in their own, natives who take up struggles on behalf of others will overcome most people, or, benefited by speech, calculation, or military service, they will increase their livelihood.

But if they happen to be in productive places or in their own, natives who take up struggles on behalf of others will overcome most people, or, benefited by speech, calculation, or military service, they will increase their livelihood.

Saturn, Venus, and the Sun signify great introductions, honors, and business, and are causes of glory, prominence, and presidency of the crowd; but they are not lasting with respect to possessions and other things, and they turn natives toward reversals, dissolve friendships, bring about diminutions of livelihood, and public exposures or penalties on account of women, and betrayals of secret affairs; and they make natives unsettled and indiscriminate in their intercourse and unions.

Saturn, Venus, and the Moon bring reversals and instability of life, and above all as regards the place of the wife, the mother, and children. For they bring malice and ingratitude, and further rivalries and factions, separations, reproaches, public exposures, unlawful intercourse; but in business they make natives not without resources, inventive, and coming into acquisitions, benefited from the dead, yet not keeping what they gain, plotted against by many, or themselves accomplices in wickedness or poisoning, and advisers of women.

Saturn, Venus, and Mercury make natives intelligent, thoughtful, and gifted and quick to succeed in the starting-points of business, but not persevering, letting their first undertakings grow cold and desiring others, of much learning, curious, versatile, skilled in medicine, delighting in novelty, change, and sojourning abroad. But if, while these are so placed, the configuration is afflicted, or Mars also regards it, natives fall into disturbances and lawsuits on account of poisonings, or women, or occasions arising from deaths; or, suffering injustice from women, they incur a diminution of livelihood and harmful charges. In general they will be insecure and grieved as regards the place of the wife, of children, and of slaves.

Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon make natives glorious, brilliant, widely known, presidents of public, civic, and royal affairs, fit to lead, fit for the command of armies, not subject to others, tyrants, but envied, ill spoken of, and betrayed by certain people, haters of their own kin, quick to repent, varied and unsettled in their judgments, haughty, thinking above themselves, and amid rises and falls, adorned with display in their lives, yet not persisting in their prosperity to the end, but tripping in certain matters, or even having a painful end.

Jupiter, Mars, and the Sun indicate natives troubled and exposed to danger, but rather hot and quick to succeed in the undertakings of their business and sharing in glory, military men fit to lead, presidents of public affairs, insecure because there follow envy from greater persons, threats, betrayals, plots of their own people, accusations. For some, raised up from a middling fortune by the advancement of greater persons, have been brought down in their livelihood.

Jupiter, Mars, and the Moon make natives quick to succeed, bold, public, with many friends, coming into advancements and exalted from a small fortune and deemed worthy of trust, soldiers, athletes, glorious, fit to lead, presidents of crowds and places, sharing in honors and salaries or in priesthood, but falling into adversities and accusations, betrayed by their own people or by women, suffering diminution of what they have acquired, and later acquiring again from secret or unexpected affairs.

Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury make natives active, hot, stirred up, sharing in salaries in public places or in military ranks, or conducting royal or civic business, but uneven in their lives and spenders of what they acquire, well-meaning and trustworthy stewards, readily correcting their mistakes and laying their own faults upon others, but ill spoken of and falling into adversities. Some, then, they make athletes, wearers of crowns, or even trainers of the body, of much learning, fond of travelling abroad, or providing for themselves in a foreign land, but missing the mark in their own affairs.

Jupiter, Mars, and Venus make natives with many friends and fond of companionship, deemed worthy of introductions to greater persons and of benefits, coming into advancement, advanced by women; some, then, fit for high priesthood, wearers of crowns, athletes, or presidents of temples, serving the pleasures of crowds and from time to time living unsettled and uneven lives, but blameworthy and indiscriminate in their unions, enduring public exposures and betrayals, grieved as regards the place of children and of slaves, delighting in newer liaisons, and enduring separations from wives.

Jupiter, Mercury, and the Sun make natives easily successful in the undertakings of their business and with many friends, deemed worthy of trusts, honors, and stewardships, of introductions to greater persons and of advancements, or raised up and adorned from a small fortune; but with respect to acquisitions not lasting and easily taken, or in want for certain periods, and doing many things secretly; yet not without a livelihood, but benefited from unexpected sources and by greater persons.

Jupiter, Mercury, and the Moon make natives good, acquisitive, and quick to succeed in business, collectors of gifts, sharing in trusts, secretive, intelligent, rational, guardians of property and deposits, raised up by speech and calculation, lenders, tax-collectors, lessees, with many friends, widely known, fit for guardianships, administrators of affairs, generous; some, then, athletes, wearers of crowns, deemed worthy of honors, images, and statues. And if they happen to be in productive places, they make natives finders of treasures, and superintendents of shrines and temples; they will rebuild and plant, and, having adorned places, they will win ever-memorable fame.

Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus are good, bringing about acquisition of livelihood and success in business; natives become intelligent, simple, generous, pleasant, fond of living with others, cheerful, sharing in education and music, clean, comely, deemed worthy of honor and glory, associating with greater persons and sharing in trusts and stewardships, adorned in their lives; being fond of rearing and fond of training, they become lords of slaves, rear some as their own children and do them good, and, being lovers of the gods, foreknow the future from the gods; but as regards the place of the wife and children they will be unsettled or grieved.

Jupiter, Venus, and the Sun will make natives splendid in display and glorious, but petty and uneven in their judgments, haughty, sometimes ready to provide and beneficent, yet quick to repent, sometimes elated by the glory and acquisitions of others and raised up from a small fortune. They also become high priests, wearers of crowns, fit for office, fit to lead, presidents of public affairs and leaders of crowds; they are deemed worthy of honors or gifts and are adorned in their lives, but in their unions they will be lawless or blameworthy. And if they happen to be oriental or in productive places, they will also have joy in wife and children.

Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon make natives active and glorious, fit for high priesthood, wearers of crowns, presidents of shrines and temples, bountiful, lovers of glory, serving the pleasures of crowds, of cities or of lands, taking on trusts, deemed worthy of honors, acclaimed, and envied by their own people and by friends, enduring enmities and rivalries, but as regards the place of the wife and of intimacy unsettled and contentious, living with jealousies, separations, and constraint, and in suspense; sometimes, then, they unite with kinswomen, and not even so do they keep their cohabitation free from disturbance; they come into partnerships; as for the substance of their livelihood, they will be splendid in display, filled not so much with truth as with illusion.

Venus, the Sun, and the Moon make natives glorious and active, amid display, but malicious and blameworthy, slandered by most people and envied by greater persons and by friends, coming into advancement and possession and exalted by fortune, but uneven as regards wife and children; otherwise fond of their friends, living in sojourns abroad and prospering in a foreign land.

Venus, Mars, and the Moon make natives neither without resources nor inactive, but varied and unsettled in their judgments, great-souled, spending without discernment and not bringing their affairs to an end, given to grand undertakings, contemptuous, wanderers, bold, public, soldiers, indiscriminate in their use of men and of women, ill spoken of and coming into abuse and lawsuits, turning friendships into enmities through the provocations of knaves, and tripping in their livelihood.

Mercury, the Sun, and the Moon make natives dignified, clean, good at dissembling, stewards, sharing in trusts or ranks, beneficent, partakers in mysteries, accomplishers of affairs, possessing a very great display of substance; they also become bodyguards, public informers, men set over money, writings, and accounts; and the speech of such natives will prevail for counsel or for teaching.

Mercury, the Sun, and Venus make natives of much learning, of much experience, good, leaders in arts and sciences and deemed worthy of trusts and ranks, quick to repent in what they undertake, suffering reversals from time to time, much on the move or delighting in innovations in their business, with many friends, widely known, coming into advancement through greater persons and adorned in livelihood and glory, but blameworthy.

Mercury, the Moon, and Venus make natives good, easy to live with, simple, generous, fond of laughter, civic-minded, sharing in education or in rhythms, inventive, of much experience, orderly, clean, gifted, privy to secret affairs, ready to serve, emulated and envied, but uneven in their lives and indiscriminate in their intercourse with women and men, yet well-off and given to collecting.

Mercury, Mars, and Venus, when configured together, bring about benefits, glory, and business, and make natives quick to succeed and good stewards in giving and receiving and in other undertakings, but knavish and of much experience, raised up through letters or through training; blameworthy, spending much, generous, rolled about amid sureties and loans and doing wrong, embezzlers of other people's money, advisers who lie charmingly, well-off yet envious, quick to repent in what they undertake.

Mars, the Sun, and the Moon make natives bold, manly, daring, active; for they become athletes and soldiers, fit for office and fit to lead, providing for themselves from violent and envied affairs and from toilsome arts or hard labor, but turned about amid adversities and dangerous affairs, and they come into the enmities of greater persons and into charges, unless benefics, configured with them, keep the substance of the nativity from being overthrown.

Mars, the Sun, and Venus make natives with many friends and widely known, deemed worthy of introductions and honors, well-off, fond of companionship, blameworthy, and much talked about, but not persevering in their friendships and unsettled in their business, desiring many things, spending much, injurers of women, easily abused, turned about amid adversities and enmities through certain failures of judgment in their reasoning.

Mars, the Sun, and Mercury make natives of much experience, inventive in the starting-points of business, but full of cares and unsuccessful in the desires of their reasonings, yet unexpectedly coming out on top; hence such natives become uneven in their judgments, daring, active, quick-tempered, rushing against their enemies, but they repent after bringing harmful charges or damages upon themselves; and sometimes, taking on a cowardly and contemptible character, they become self-controlled and dissembling and inferior to those to whom they ought not to be, and, living unevenly for most of their lives and coming under the hand of others, they will blame their own fortune.

Mars, the Moon, and Mercury make natives nimble, inventive, readily setting about their business and much on the move, wanting to act with speed, curious, initiates into hidden things and privy to secret affairs, injurers, violent, insubordinate, covetous of other people's goods, falling into charges and damages, lawsuits and dangerous affairs, enduring disturbances on account of writings and money matters, yet well-off and spending much, but missing the mark in their livelihood.

These things we have set out as single-form and general distinctions. But when other blendings are mixed in as well, whether by presence or by joint testimony, the power of the affairs too will be altered according to the nature of the planet and the judgment of its place. For I did not wish to write about the blendings at length and in many parts, since the ancients too have set out matters concerning them beforehand; the method, then, will be judged easy to survey, at least for those who have intelligence, from the natural operation of each planet and sign, which is set out in this treatise. Hence it will be necessary to compare the placement of the planet, how it is configured: whether it is angular, or lord of the oriental place, of the Lot, of the Ascendant, or of the triplicity; and likewise the signs in which they happen to be, whether their own or of their own sect, and by which planets they receive testimony; for in this way the effects are declared to be secure. But if they have fallen into inoperative places and alien signs and are contrary to the sect, both the native's business and his fortune will be less.
