第一部

The diseases the Planets signifie.

诸行星所主的疾病。

1. THe Sun causeth Pimples and Burles in the face, afflictions of the heart; Heartburning, Tremblings, Faintings, Timpanies, sore Eyes, and diseases of the mouth; Cramps, Convulsions, all diseases of the Heart and Brain, and their ascendents, viz. the Nerves and Arteries, Stinking-breath, Catharr's, rotten Feavers; thus Authors. And if any aske why I mention no more, tell them heres more then is true. Now to the purpose.

一、太阳引起脸上的丘疹与疖子、心脏的病患；烧心、颤抖、昏厥、鼓胀、眼痛、口部的病；抽筋、惊厥，心与脑的一切疾病，以及由它们发出的部分，即神经与动脉；口臭、伤风黏液下流、腐败热；以上是诸作者之说。若有人问我为什么不再多提，就告诉他们：这里列的已经比真的还多了。现在言归正传。

First, Of all Timpanies that are under the Moon, I have known the Sun give a fiery disease, but never a watry.

第一，一切鼓胀都属月亮；我见过太阳带来火性的病，却从没见过它带来水性的病。

2. Cramps and Convulsions are under the Moon; and so are all diseases that often return, as Agues do: you shall find the same in another Aphorism afterwards; and although my Auther contradict himselfe, I do not delight to imitate him in that sport.

二、抽筋与惊厥属月亮；一切反复发作的病，如疟热，也属月亮：后面另一条警句里你还会看到同样的说法；我的作者虽然自相矛盾，我却不喜欢学他玩这种把戏。

3. The Head, Brain, and Nerves, are not under the Sun, as you shall heare hereafter.

三、头、脑与神经不属太阳，你们后面就会听到。

4. Catharr's are under either Mercury or Jupiter, or both; take this for a Maxime of truth, and say I told you so. A Planet ruling a part of the body, if he be weak in the Genesis, that part of the body is naturally weak: I confesse I know not wherefore Art was made, unlesse to helpe nature. The eyes are under the Luminaries, and whosoever hath them weak in their Genesis, hath but weak fight. The Lungs are under Jupiter; Mercury is the opposite Planet to Jupiter:

四、伤风黏液下流属水星或木星，或二者共管；把这当作一条真理的格言，就说是我告诉你的。一颗主管身体某部位的行星，若在本命中虚弱，身体的那一部位天生就弱：说实话，我不知道这门学问是为什么而设的，除非是为了帮助自然。眼睛属两光，凡在本命中两光虚弱的人，视力就弱。肺属木星；水星是与木星相对的行星：

Now then, if Jupiter be weak, he is not able to strengthen the Lungs as he should do; if Mercury be the afflicting Planet, he weakens the Lungs by opposition: If you have but wit enough to know by a penny how a shilling's coyn'd,

那么，若木星虚弱，他就无力像应有的那样强健肺部；若水星是施害之星，他就以对立之势削弱肺部：只要你有本事从一便士看出一先令是怎么铸的——

Sensibus hecimis imis (res non & parva) repone.

“把这些话深藏在你的心底（此事可不小）。”

Afford these lines a place amid'st your sences, / And be not gull'd by specious pretences.

给这几行在你心里留个位置，别被冠冕堂皇的说辞蒙骗。

I have now leaped from the Sun to the Moon, and she (they say) causeth Apoplexies, Palsies, Cholick, Belly-ach, diseases in the Stones, Bladder, and instruments of Generation; stopping and overflowing of the Terms in Women, Dropsies, Fluxes, all cold and Rhumatick diseases, Gout, Sciatica, Wormes in the Belly, Rhumes, and hurts in the Eyes; Surfets, rotten Coughs, Convulsions, Falling-sicknesse, Kings-Evil, Aposthumes, small Pox, and Measles; all coagulated and crude humours in any part of the body, Lethargies, and all diseases of Flegme; thus my Author.

我已经从太阳跳到了月亮；据说她引起中风、瘫痪、腹绞痛、肚子疼、睾丸、膀胱与生殖器官的病；妇女月经的阻塞与过多、水肿、腹泻、一切寒性与黏液流注的病、痛风、坐骨神经痛、肚里生虫、黏液流注、眼伤；暴食伤、陈年咳嗽、惊厥、癫痫、瘰疬、脓肿、天花与麻疹；身体任何部位一切凝结与未经消化的体液、昏睡症，以及一切黏液之病；以上是我的作者所说。

Amongst these I except against,

在这些当中，我要反驳的有：

1. Apoplexies, and you shall find my reason within a quarter of an hour, unlesse you fall asleep with reading.

一、中风；我的理由你一刻钟之内就会看到，除非你读着读着睡着了。

2. Diseases in the Instruments of Generation, for they are caused by Venus and Mars; by the one by Sympathy, by the other by Antipathy.

二、生殖器官的病，因为它们由金星和火星引起：一个出于相感，另一个出于相斥。

3. The Gout is caused by Saturn. Who knows but that's the reason why he moves so slowly?

三、痛风由土星引起。谁知道这是不是他走得那么慢的原因呢？

Now must I leave the Moon, and mount up to Saturn, for I am like the World, never in a Station.

现在我得离开月亮，升到土星那里去，因为我和这世界一样，从来不会停在“留”上。

Under Saturn say Authors, are Apoplexies, Tooth-ach, Quartain Agues; all diseases which come of Melancholy, cold and drinesse. Leprosie, Rhumes, Consumptions, Black-Jaundise, Palsies, Trembling, vain-feares, formidable fancies of a Hobgobling, Dropsies, Gouts of all sorts; a Dog-like-hunger, Hemorrhoides, broken Bones, and Dislocations, Deafness, pain in the bones, Ruptures if he be in Leo or Scorpion, or in an ill aspect to Venus: Iliack passion, Chin-cough, Catharr's, pains in the Bladder; all long diseases, all madnesse that comes of Melancholy, fear or griefe.

诸作者说，属土星的有：中风、牙痛、四日热；一切由黑胆汁、寒与燥而来的病。麻风、黏液流注、痨病、黑黄疸、瘫痪、颤抖、无端的恐惧、怕妖怪的可怕幻想、水肿、各种痛风；狗一样的饥饿、痔疮、骨折与脱臼、耳聋、骨痛；若他在狮子或天蝎，或与金星成凶相位，则主疝气；回肠绞痛、百日咳、伤风黏液下流、膀胱疼痛；一切久病；一切由黑胆汁、恐惧或悲伤而来的疯狂。

If you will give me leave (after I have been first a little Critical) I will be (secondly,) a little instructive.

若你允许我（先稍加挑剔之后），我再（其次）稍作指点。

1. I except against Apoplexies; and if you would learn why; you shall so soon as you have learned a little Patience.

一、我反驳中风；你若想知道为什么，等你学会一点耐心就会知道。

2. I except against Dropsies, for they are under the Moon.

二、我反驳水肿，因为它属月亮。

3. I except against Catharr's, for they are under Jupiter or Mercury, or both.

三、我反驳伤风黏液下流，因为它属木星或水星，或二者共管。

4. I except against Dog-like hunger, for it's under Mars.

四、我反驳狗一样的饥饿，因为它属火星。

A few instructions would I very willingly give you, if I thought you would be so wise to heed them. I had as good give them you under Saturn, as under another Planet. I will not give them you under each Planet, because hee's a foolish Musician that harps alwayes on on one string.

有几条指点，我很乐意给你们，只要我认为你们够聪明，肯听进去。放在土星这里给，和放在别的行星那里给，都一样好。我不打算在每颗行星底下都讲一遍，因为老在一根弦上弹的乐师是个傻乐师。

A planet causeth diseases.

行星致病有两种方式：

1 By Sympathy.

一、出于相感。

2 By Antipathy.

二、出于相斥。

And as the cause is so must the cure be, unlesse you wic do as Scogging did, strike him that stands next you, because another another abuses you.

病因是什么样，治法也必须是什么样；除非你要学斯科金的样子：别人欺负了你，你却去打站在你旁边的人。

These diseases Saturne causeth by Sympathy; Tooth-ach, broken bones; the reason is because he rules the bones. Deafnesse he cavseth because he rules the eares. Melancholy and all diseases of the spleen by the same argument.

土星出于相感而引起的病有：牙痛、骨折；理由是他主管骨骼。他引起耳聋，因为他主管耳朵。黑胆汁之病与一切脾脏之病，也是同样的道理。

2 Also he afflicts all the parts of the body that are under the Moon by antipathy; and likewise he playes the same tricks with those that are under the Sun; you shall know what they are by and by. The great wisedome of a Physician is to know whether Saturne cause the disease by Symapthy or Hntepathy, and then take nothing, that as the cause is so is the cure, Sympatheticall, or antipatheticall; and withall do not forget, that sympatheticall cures strenthennature; antipatheticall cures, in one degree or another weaken it:

二、他又出于相斥，侵害身体上一切属月亮的部位；对属太阳的部位也玩同样的把戏；那些部位是什么，你们一会儿就会知道。医生的大智慧，在于知道土星致病是出于相感还是出于相斥，然后要注意：病因如何，治法也如何，或相感，或相斥；同时别忘了，相感的治法能强健自然，相斥的治法则在某种程度上会削弱它：

And now your owne mother-wit (if you have any) wil teach you, that antipathetical Medicins are not to be used, unlesse to such patients whom Doctor Ignorance, or Doctor Carelesnesse hath had so long in hand, that sympatheticall will not serve the turne. To bring all this to the point in hand that so it may be usefull: If Saturne cause the disease by sympathy, cure it by the sympatheticall hearbs of Saturne.

现在，你自己的天生悟性（若你有的话）会告诉你：相斥的药不可用，除非是对那些被无知医生或粗心医生拖了太久、相感之药已经不管用的病人。把这一切落到眼前的事上，使它有用：若土星出于相感致病，就用土星相感的草药来治。

If he cause the disease by antipathy, note whether it be antipathy to Sun or Moone; or if it happen in the instruments of generation, be sure it is by antipathy to Venus. Make use of the sympatheticall hearbs of those Planets respectively for cure: you shall not live the age of a little fish, before I give you rationall instructions for them all, I now leave Saturne and come a little lower to —

若他出于相斥致病，要看是与太阳相斥还是与月亮相斥；若病出在生殖器官上，那肯定是与金星相斥。分别用那几颗行星相感的草药来治：用不了一条小鱼的寿命那么久，我就会把关于它们的合理指点全给你们。现在我离开土星，往下走一点，来到——

Jupiter. Jupiter they say causeth Apoplexies, all infirmities of the Liver and Veins, inflammations of the Lungs, Plurifies and other Aposthumes about the Breast and Ribs, all diseases proceeding of putrefaction of blood and wind, quinsies, feavers, and other diseases; which Authors either for want of witt, or super-abundance of ignorance are pleased to attribute to him.

木星。据说木星引起中风、肝脏与静脉的一切病弱、肺的炎症、胸膜炎以及胸部与肋间的其他脓肿、一切由血液腐败与风气而来的病、喉痈、热病，以及其他一些病——那是诸作者要么由于缺乏才智、要么由于过于无知，乐意归到他头上的。

Against these I except.

对这些，我要反驳：

1 Against Apoplexies; for it cannot come about that all the Planets should cause Apoplexies; if so, they would be more frequent then they are.

一、反驳中风；因为不可能所有的行星都引起中风；若是那样，中风会比现在常见得多。

2 Against corruption of blood: For Saturne corrupts the blood by melancholy, and Mars by choler.

二、反驳血液腐败：因为土星以黑胆汁使血液腐败，火星以黄胆汁使血液腐败。

Mars. Diseases under Mars are pestilences, burning feavers, tertian and quotidian agues, megrim, carbuncles and plague sores; burning, scalding, ring-wormes, blisters, phrensie, furie, hare-braines, sudden distempers in the head coming of heat: yellow-jaundise, bloody-flux, fistula's. All wounds whatsoever: Diseases in the instruments of generation: the stone in the reins and bladder: scars and pock-holes in the face: all hurts by iron and fire: the shingles, falling siknesse, calentures, St. Anthonies fire; all diseases coming of choler, anger or passion.

火星。属火星的病有：瘟疫、灼热的热病、间日热与每日热、偏头痛、痈与疫疮；烧伤、烫伤、癣、水疱、谵狂、狂怒、急躁冒失、头部因热而起的突发失调；黄黄疸、血痢、瘘管。一切创伤，无论哪种；生殖器官的病；肾与膀胱的结石；脸上的疤痕与痘坑；一切铁器与火造成的伤；带状疱疹、癫痫、热射病、圣安东尼之火；一切由黄胆汁、愤怒或激情而来的病。

Amongst all these I can justly except but against one; and that is the falling sicknesse, which is under the Moon. And your selfe will be of my opinion, if you please but to take notice that those hideous fits usually come at conjunction, opposition and quartile of the Moon to the Sun.

在这些当中，我能理直气壮反驳的只有一条，那就是癫痫，它属月亮。只要你留意，那些可怕的发作通常发生在月亮与太阳会合、对冲与四分之时，你自己也会同意我的看法。

Venus. Diseases under Venus are all diseases of the wombe whatsoever, as suffocation, precipitation, dislocation, &c. All diseases incident to the members of generation, the reins and navel, as the running of the reins, the French pox, &c. All diseases coming by inordinate love or lust, priapismus, impoteney in the act of generation, ruptures of all sorts: All diseases belonging to the urine, as disuria, iscuria and stranguria, iliack passion, diabetes, &c.

金星。属金星的病有：子宫的一切病，如窒息、下垂、移位等等。生殖器官、肾与脐所遭的一切病，如淋浊、法国痘等等。一切由放纵的爱欲而来的病、阳强不倒、交合时的无能、各种疝气；一切与小便相关的病，如排尿痛、尿闭、尿淋沥、回肠绞痛、消渴等等。

Against these I except;

对这些，我要反驳：

1 Impotencie in the act of generation, for thats under Saturne.

一、交合时的无能，因为那属土星。

2 Ruptures, for he hath a share in them also.

二、疝气，因为他在其中也有份。

3 Diseases of the urine, for they are under Mars.

三、小便之病，因为它们属火星。

4 The Iliack passion, which is under Mercury.

四、回肠绞痛，那属水星。

Mercury. Under Mercury are almost all the diseases of the braine, as vertigo's, madnesse, &c. all diseases of the lungs, as Asthma, Phthisicks, &c. All imperfections of the Tongue, as stammering, lisping, &c. Hoarsnesse, coughs, snuffling in the nose: all defects of the memory, gout, stopping of the head, dumbnesse, folly and simplicity (the Epidemicall diseases of the time) and whatsoever hurts the intellectuall faculty.

水星。属水星的，几乎是脑的一切病，如眩晕、疯狂等等；肺的一切病，如气喘、痨咳等等；舌的一切缺陷，如口吃、大舌头等等；声音嘶哑、咳嗽、鼻塞抽鼻；记忆的一切缺陷、痛风、头部壅塞、哑、愚蠢与头脑简单（这正是当世流行的病），以及凡损害智力的一切。

Against these I except.

对这些，我要反驳：

1 Against the defects of the memory, for Saturne hath a great share in that.

一、反驳记忆的缺陷，因为土星在其中占很大的份。

2 Against the Gout for Saturne wholly wholly rules that.

二、反驳痛风，因为痛风完全归土星管。

I have now done with this part, and if any youngsters aske, Why I have not given a Reason for all I have spoken: Tell them the Reason is cleare in the matter; and he that is not able to see it, is as unfit to give Physick. A blind man cannot see the Sun in a clear day when he is upon the Meridian.

这一部分我已讲完；若有毛头小子问：我为什么没有为所说的每一条都给出理由？就告诉他们：理由在事情本身里一清二楚；看不出理由的人，也就不配行医。瞎子在晴天也看不见正当中天的太阳。
