XII. On the Names of the 12 Places and on the Twelve-Turning.

第十二章　论十二位的名称与十二转。

Let the beginning be from the Ascendant, which is life, the helm, the body, the breath; the 2nd: livelihood, the Gate of Hades, the shadowy place, giving, receiving, partnership, entanglement with a wife, contract, action, benefit from matters of the dead, the place of the will. The 3rd: brothers, residence abroad, royalty, authority, friends, kin, the heart region [text uncertain], slaves. The 4th: glory, children, one's own wife and older persons, action, the city, the house, possessions, stays, turnings, changes of place, dangers, death, confinement, secret matters. The 5th: the place of children, of friendship, of partnership, of slaves, of freedmen, of the accomplishment of some good or of a benefaction. The 6th: of slaves, injury, enmity, suffering, sickness [lacuna]. The 8th: of death, of benefit from the dead, the idle place, of lawsuits, of sickness. The 9th: of friendship, travel, benefit from foreigners, of the god, the king, the potentate, astronomy, oracles, the manifestation of the gods, divination, partnership in secret or hidden matters. The 10th: of action, glory, advancement, children, a wife, change, the renewal of affairs. The 11th: of friends, hopes, gifts, children, slaves, freedmen. The 12th: of foreign residence, enmity, slaves, injury, dangers, courts of law, suffering, death, sickness.

Each place, then, will bring about what it signifies specifically, but the nature of the opposite place will also cooperate. When, then, a transmission of the year is found, we examine in which place the planet that hands over is, and in which the one that receives, according to the twelve-turning set out above, and we declare the effect according to the affinity of the sign and of the place, the transmission of the planets having its own power of effects, which we shall set out at the end of the divisions. For example, if Saturn or Mars, being upon the Ascendant, makes a transmission or a reception, we shall say that in that year there is bodily trouble, or danger, or haemorrhage; if in the 7th from the Ascendant, a disturbance on account of a wife, or danger to a wife, or troubled ailments on account of marriage; if in the 9th from the Ascendant, a precarious residence abroad and harassment abroad, or betrayals by foreigners; if in the 12th, grief on account of slaves or uprisings of enemies; or whatever each place brings about, concerning that the planet will be effective. If benefics are upon the places, they signify something good, such as glories, benefits, purchases, residences abroad according to one's desire; the determinations too will be according to the planets that receive and testify to the places, but the kind of effect and the outcome of affairs will be judged from the planet that hands over, the one that receives, and the places. One must also look beforehand at the lord of the planet that hands over or receives, in what sign it is; for this too will be effective and will contribute to the kind and the effect. The second sign from the Ascendant and the 8th will be judged idle and deadly; when a transmission or reception takes place in these, natives benefit from occasions of death, and especially when benefics are upon them or testify, the benefits will be greater; but if malefics too, there will be lawsuits and disputes on account of the bequest, and the year will be dangerous and injurious or inactive. Sometimes, when malefics alone are upon them, or with the Sun, the Moon, or Mercury, natives also incur charges of murder and contrive something dangerous against themselves. If Venus too is upon them or testifies, they are troubled on account of poisoning or slandered as plotters. The places of Saturn, however, are indicative of death and bequest, bringing about inheritances and benefits from the dead in a transmission to Jupiter; if, then, this transmission also coincides with the first chronology, there will without fail be inheritances and great benefits according to the substance of the nativity. If, while the division is in the Gate of Hades, the same transmission from Saturn into a house of Jupiter happens to occur, there will be an inheritance. If the transmission comes on its own, there will also be benefit from matters of the dead; likewise if Saturn and Jupiter, being in the same sign, make a transmission or a reception. If a transmission takes place from the Good Daemon, or Good Fortune, or the Lot, while benefics are upon them, there will be inheritances, or a gift, or an occasion of some good. If somehow the places of death make the transmission to the cadent places, or the cadent places to the places of death, natives will hear of someone's death abroad or coming from abroad; for the 4 cadent places signify the place of foreigners and slaves. Likewise Gemini and Sagittarius in general, in every nativity, signify the place of slaves because of the cosmic nativity; for when Cancer is in the Ascendant, the place of slaves ends in these. If, then, someone has the place of slaves in another sign, while malefics are found in these signs, natives will endure troubles and wrongs from slaves, and further losses, deaths, and runaways, especially when Saturn comes into these places; but if benefics are upon them, natives will be well regarded and will receive benefits from such persons, and will themselves become benefactors toward them, or will bring some up in the place of children. Let the same be understood of the remaining cadent places too.

XIII. On the Transmission from Exaltation to Exaltation.

第十三章　论从旺位到旺位的交付。

A transmission taking place from exaltation to exaltation, while benefics are upon the places or testify, is glorious and beneficial, and especially if the lords are in their own place. Likewise, planets handing over from their own houses to exaltations, or from exaltations to houses, while their lords are upon them, show more effective and glorious effects; but those handing over from depressions to depressions become moderate and subject to reversals. Saturn or Mars, configured in fitting positions and handing over or receiving from their own houses, or exaltations, or productive places, bring about great benefactions and glories. Saturn provides inheritances, landed possessions, the produce of foundations, administration, and brings success in secret undertakings and old affairs; Mars makes natives fit to lead. When the benefics keep watch and the Sun and the Moon are configured in fitting positions toward them, they bring about great and beneficial distinctions. But when the benefics are absent and the luminaries are opposed and configured unfavourably, while Mercury is entwined with them, they bring accusations, adversities, great dangers, plots, uproars, and ruin. If somehow they make a transmission or reception in alien exaltations, or in their own but unfavourably, they hurl natives down from a height or from four-footed animals and overturn them with wounds, haemorrhages, or dangerous diseases, and with fires or shipwrecks; but if the nativity is helped and has a substance of periods, they bring natives down in livelihood or in glory. One must, then, observe whether the planets of the diurnal or nocturnal sect are configured with the rest; for they too are more effective for good than the remaining planets, and in their fitting transmissions or entries they become causes of great goods; but if otherwise, they hinder and cut short glory and benefit. In this respect they have been named malefics, since they take away life, while for other matters they are beneficent; for Jupiter and Venus too, when they are found setting in the transmissions or entries, or unfavourably placed, or fallen out of the favourable places, make the period troubled, hard to act in, and full of postponements, and become the takers-away of hoped-for expectations or benefits, and besides these things bring losses, torments of the soul, and failures in what is undertaken.
